Been here several times, just seem to get lost in the mix?
I'm an x-cop and fubar was a regular saying back then......that was how my last comp felt! Looked great the day before and the day after, but sucked during the day of the show.....I'm kinda in limbo right now. Still dieting during the week, but splurging on the weekends. Starting to train a little heavier, it's good to strain again.......

Hey Joe,

Hey man I missed the NA's but seen you at the Master Nationals in Pittsburgh this year...you were a fucking beast....you didnt get the placings in your class..but you were by far a site to see you were HUGE as a bodybuilder....like Vinny was telling us that it was the first time he seen you look like more of a bodybuilder than a powerlifter....I just wanted to say that you are one big dude....a real down to earth dude too!!

How long did it take to adjust from Powerlifing to bodybuilding for your contest prep?

Also I been trying to check out the "Power Tour" from Animalpak.pl (it takes a whille to translate alot of the text but I can get the gist of it).and yes it gets frustrating at times haha...but anyhow it seems like a really cool Idea....how often is that done is there any plans for something like that in the States?

Thanks for your time!

In the CAGE there is no bodybuilder, no powerlifter, just a legion of men and women with a common thread to succeed, with 100 percent support from each other. I encourage EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT READS THIS TO COME SEE FOR YOURSELF! They didn't know what to think with me and Frank throwing tons of plates around every day???

what are your ten favorite exercises?

Heavy rack pulls from the knee's up are on top right now....my best is 1005 for 3 and it feels like every vessel in your body is going to explode!

Body masters has this machine called a squat thrust, you can load like 12 to 14 plates on each side and bang em out like sex!

I have these special dumbells that go up to 200lbs that I like using for doing 1 arm DB rows.

Seated cables with a 400lb stack! LUV IT!

Stiff leg deads off a platform with 5 wheels on each side for reps....what a stretch!

Box squats with reverse bands to do reps with heavy weight!

Almost any kinda hammer strength stuff, especially for chest!

Going up the rack of dumbells doing 10 x 10s till it feels like their going to explode!!!

Pulling a weighed sled after a leg workout!!! If your squats didn't make you puke this will!

The last one would have to be the squat, bench and deadlift.......LOL

Sounds like you need to learn how to squat properly. First movement is hips, not knee's....dip your hips back, force your knee's out and squat on the outside of your feet trying to keep your shins as upright as possible. Dip down just below parallel and explode up! You'll need to drop the bar down your back some too....once you learn this, your weights will go and your legs will grow!!!

Your body adapts to foods just as it does exercise, you need a variety to grow!

It makes the broncia in your lungs shrink so that you can take in more air, the more air you take in the tighter you are, the tighter you are the stronger you are........thats why we hold our breaths through the entire movement. When you exhale during a big lift you lose your tightness, hence losing your strength!

No I've never trained for them myself due to being vertcally challenged.....highland games and strongman events only work well for the tall athletes.

I've helped several train for them though and my best advice is to find out what events are going to be in the contest and start practicing.

I got your name from Vin as the man when it comes to powerlifting. I am experienced in training but as a bodybuilder. I would like to partake in some powerlifting to increase mass and strength. I know nothing about how to powerlift. Can you either give me some info on books to buy or possibly a simple basic routine?

Thanks.

The wider the grip the further you have to pull the bar. If you use close stance, you should grab with your hands just outside of your thighs so your keeping the bar tight against your legs. If your sumo(wide) grab close on the edge of the knurling to keep the bar in tight.

Hey Lad! My best squat session I managed 585 for four, but can only manage parallel when it gets that heavy. I am 5' 10" tall and weigh about 215, but look like 225. My genetics are a little awkward, short legs long torso, so it has been a long road getting the form tight. I use the Inzer IronwrapsZ when it gets heavy, but it seems like my form may be compromised if I go deeper. Where do you think my weak link is? I have a strong back so could it be my hams?

Hey Lad, very impressive in the cage mate.

I`d be interested in some of your stats and how long you`ve been training etc.

I'm 44 now and I've been training for 29 years.....mostly powerlifting competitions, but have been bodybuilding training also since I was 18yoa. Now that father time is taking his course and my body is breaking down from all the heavy training, I've been doing mostly bodybuilding for the last couple of years competing in the Masters nationals a couple of times and the North American once. It's really hard switching over because most everyone knows me as a powerlifter, so when I walk out on stage I already have this negative stigma placed on me by the judges regardless of how I look. But I do it for me and the fans, not the judges. I've never kissed anyones ass in either sport and not about to start now!

The Lad
03-27-08, 2:15 pm
Hey Joe! Thanks for the help and advice with the shirt this last weekend. I was lookin at my pics from the 07 arnold, and u were ALOT leaner this year. Anyways, its always good to see u. catch ya later.

Thanks Sam....you learned what dieting does to your heavy lifting.....be smart and don't do that again, you could wind up busted up like me?

I'm trying to kill this stigma I got with the national judges, so when I walk out on stage I don't have this big "P"(powerlifter) on my forehead. Last year, I tried to get as heavy as I could in the off season and managed 278lbs. But then I dropped down to 225 over the next 20 weeks and it still wasn't enough time for the midsection to shrink like I wanted. So this year I've stayed around 240 to 250 and much harder.....hopefully I will break the top 5 at this years masters.....

I've never kissed anyones ass in either sport and not about to start now!

i like what you said right here sir and i respect it
i have seen many pics of you on stage and let me tell you....

YOU ARE A HUGE MOFFO!

Sgt rock, you and big byrd are great guys to follow and have been inspiring me a lot

ive decided to pass on the show this year and focus on Louies IPA Pro in aug. its gonna be tough with summer comin up. one it sux being heavy in this humid southern summer, and 2, the ladies luv the abs! haha

ive gained back up to 220 already, but im not gonna get crazy with it. im just not gonna fight to keep the weight off if it wants to come like i have been doin the last 3 years. last year i hit a lean 234 (bout as lean as i am now) still tryin to keep weight off, so i may hit 240 by august. Im gonna start goin back down to NGBB to train with grove and paul key and them till the meet. its a coeffient total, so theres no weight classes so as long as my strength come up proportionately i should be ok i think.

Ya know, i hate the show part of BB, but i love bein in that kinda shape! Who do u have doin ur diet for the shows? u workin with Tazzy or her guy?

Sounds like you got one of the old style shirts? Cut the back and slip it on, or get a newer style/version.

I don't know if it's an old style, how could I tell, it's a standard blast shirt? And how far should I cut the back? Also I've heard about having to break a shirt in, how do you go about doing this?

Thanks for the help.

Hey Lad, just wanted to let you know that you have been a a great inspiration to me during my lifting career. You are a stand up guy who has been in the game for a long time and has seen great results. I just wanted to thank you for all the info that you have provided over the years, it has really been of help for a younger guy like me.

Got a question for ya tho, I have been benching raw for several years now and got my raw press over 400. I recently started to get into using a shirt. I was wondering if there was a good program or way to get used to using a shirt, because I know the first time I did it was really awkward. Any info you could give would be great.

Does it look like a tight polyester t-shirt, can you touch with light weight...you might want to get one that resembles a straight jacket! You break it in by using it and the only way to do that is to use heavy weight! If you can't touch you gotta load the bar till it does!

The only way to get use to it is to use with heavy weight....make sure you have good spotters and ones you can trust!

Good....I've been training around the injuried pec...kinda like doin one side at a time.....I think its helped speed up the recovery....the color is almost back to normal!

I'm not making any promises for competing this year....I'm taking a totally different approach.....tons of cardio, heavy dieting, light weights and tons of reps...like 50 to 100 reps per set! I'm gunna baby this pec injury and treat it like a blessing. I've seen soooo many end their careers due to injuries..............

Hey, Lad!

I noticed something with benchpressing lately. On the downward movement i was able to, well, flex my mid back muscles, just before the bar touches my chest. I even had the feeling i came up towards the barbell a bit.
Is this something very obvious and something i rather have been lacking in benching? Or is it something not at all relevant and just related to growth of my back muscles.
Just wondering, cause with that 'tension' i felt like i was able to put more explosive power to the upwards motion with medium weights. Havent been able to get that 'tension' with heavier weights yet.

Curious if you have any ideas on this. Or if you even understand what i am trying to explain...
Much respect and good luck with the recovery!

I totally understand and agree with what your saying.....and YES it has everything to do with your explosion off your chest with any weight!!!

Ah, I KNEW it =) Thanks, brother! I think i found one of the main faults in my benchpress now. I NEVER was able to do this 'back thing' before. I totally lack explosiveness with my bench. But NOW i am onto something here. Oh, this is gonna be sweet.
Thanks for taking the time to think about my question!

I already did tonight. Training mate of mine in the gym has been on a plateau for some time now. Showed him what i learned. He was instantly able to implement the ' back thing' and increase his sets by two reps.
I also noticed i got my sets a bit easier then normal.
So stoked to have found this ' missing part'!

What about now? Is your recovery still progressing well? A good friend of mine is experiencing something similar and it doesn't look pretty.

Kinda strange....the discoloration went away a few weeks ago....I've been really taking it easy, by doing tons of cardio and a circuit style of training and going super light but doing extremely high reps on everything. The only chest exercise I've been doing is a plate loaded hammer strength machine and a vertical chest press, again light weight and tons of reps and pushing mostly with the good side....
last Thursday I noticed bleeding in my bicep like I had torn it but no pain....
The doctor says thats normal after an injury like I had to bleed out in other areas close to the injury once you start back training because your breaking up scar tissue...
But to answer your question, it feels very weak in the injuried area of my chest, but I'm not sure if thats me being overly cautious by not trying to push it or if its a true weakness...only time will tell??? It has only been 5 weeks............

Five weeks can feel like an eternity when things aren't running smoothly. as the injury greatly affected your back and leg training? I can imagine that doing the negative portion of some back exercises is now out of the question.

P.s. Sorry if this is prying, it's just that as a personal trainer and aspiring athlete I'd like to get a better idea of how a pro deals with injuries. I'm also concerned for you as most of us here are. It is terrible when 2 of the pros I try to keep tabs on (both you and Sgt Rock) are injured.

Any time I have ever been injuried, I treat it as a pitstop......time for the body to rest........whether it be surgery to repair something or a slight pull, I always train around the injury because it's a proven fact that exercise speeds up recovery.... Everything is almost back to normal now....all training is normal except for chest, which is still extremely light and tons of reps just out of precaution.

By the way: i don't like this kind of 'sel-promo' one bit, but i have some pics and vids up from my first beginners meet. Would be much appreciated if you could find the time to gimme some technical feedback on what you see there. I am one of the very few in the Netherlands doing this PL-life, so i can use every bit of feedback.

hey Lad I was wondering what does your weekly training routine look like for both powerlifting and bodybuilding?

The Lad
07-19-08, 7:25 am
Although I haven't competed in powerlifting in 3 years, I have been using it as a tool in the off season to gain size and still feel the heavy weights. SO during the winter months, I usually train bench and heavy chest, tri's and shoulders on Monday nights. On wednesday, we'd deadlift, do heavy back work and biceps. On Friday, we'd squat and do heavy leg work. This would allow us to train heavy, gain size and get the proper rest we need.
I've really enjoyed full time Bodybuilding training over the last 3 years. I've mentioned this before that I train instinctivelly during in season. Meaning that I have no set schedule, everything is a constant change, which I see very good results for myself and my clients. After last night, I'm really having a hard time contimplating my future in this sport of bodybuilding though?

Try doing a very close stance, squat very fast without locking out or pausing at the top only rest in the very rock bottom. It doesn't take heavy weight to feel this, just a ton of reps...start with 20......
You could superset these with leg extensions for the maximum effect....

Lad,
i went in to squat today after not squating for about a month. [i rested a week and i was doing a smolov jr for deads]
after my second set.. i felt this shooting pain in between my hams and my groin. It wasnt debillitating or anything, i finished my workout without it acting up too much.
Have you ever heard of this?
