View Full Version : Off Season'ers Only
This may be the dumbest question of all...but sometimes the dumbest questions are what lingers in all our minds...so I am gonna suck it up here and ask...any of you thinking this and not asking it...I am doing this for you!
Off season/Bulking mode...do you eat carbs late at night? If you do...are you selective in what carbs you choose to eat or do you just eat whatever the hell you feel like, no matter what time of day it is? If you choose not to eat carbs at night, even in your off season, what time of the day do you decide to stop?
during my off season, i eat 9 squares a day...midnight, 3,6,9,noon,3,6,9
repeat
during the middle of the night it is either a shake or oats n eggs....just depends on what i am in the mood for.
if you are really looking to pack on the size off-season, do it up.

It is definetly not a dumb question, IMO the answer would be different for everyone and would mostly be dependent on your body type and how fat you are willing to get in the offseason, ectos probably can get away with eating carbs and should eat carbs whener they want and endos should probably either avoid carbs at night all together or only get carbs from fibrous veges.
The same goes for the timing of the cut off as well, ecto would be later where an endo would be earlier.
Carbs keep you full during the night. I eat a bowl of oatmeal and egg's just before bed. It is "clean" food so it's not bad to eat this at night.

Well there are two ways at looking at that, there is clean bulking, and dirty bulking. You can eat clean carbs at night like good rice and oats and all that shit. Or ice cream and cake...both will gain wieght, but do you want quality, or just weight.
I always eat low glycemic around bed time. My best bed time meal for bulking is:
1 cup cottage cheese
1 cup oatmeal (plain)
an apple or pear
1 tbsp of flax oil
the carbs i choose to have at night are sometimes cottage cheese on oatcakes, sometimes a pure protein shake w/ my fish oil and some oats....but tonite I trained legs hard so ill just have my Real Gains cuz my body needs as many carbs as poss to grow!
I was not expecting so many replies...thank you, thank you...and thank you! Good info here!
thats what we are all here for.

it all depends on your body type, some people gain fat easily, and some people dont know what fat is or what it means to be fat. any kind of carb that does not spike your insulin around bed time would be good for several reasons
1. it will be more likley stored as fat because something that is fast digesting will most likley not be used during sleep, unless of course you have long, hard sex right after you eat it
2. spiking your blood sugar would do something to your leptin and before you go to bed its not good because that will cause a reduction in your growth hormone when youre sleeping, and that is the time its most active
oats would be your best bet, because theyre full of fiber, slow digesting, so you wont be as hungry, you prolly will be hungry still
or anything thats brown

Thank you, this was also really good info...you had to go to the sex thing though huh...well, no worries there...wish that was one of my cardio options...:( lol!
Good info....thanks again...hey, anything that is brown? like whole grain bread or cereal?...I know your not talking about chocolate. I would be in my glory then. haha!
When bulking i use to have chicken breast or steak with beans for my last solid meal before bed, at about 10.30 pm. It works good for me, i feel satisfied during the night but the "problem" is in the morning, i really dont fell hungry for a big breakfast.

lol, yes you can have choclate if you want, im not stopping you, it probably wouldnt be in your best interest because youre bulking and youre most likley getting too many calories to look good, why would u wanna look even worse and eat choclate.
to my understading even whole grain/wheat bread has a little bit of flour in it which is potentially life threatining, not really, but i thought i would make it sound interesting.
but anything that is considered a clean carb can and should be consumed during a bulk during night, such as choclate, and i would reccomend about a pound before sleeping, in fact, i would get up every hour and eat some choclate, maybe a coke to go with it to get the carb count up, and throw in a lean protein shake. so you got your fat, carbs and protein in, look how easy it was!! lol

IT IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT THAT YOU GET FAT FROM EATING CARBS AT NIGHT, EVEN BEFORE BED.
FOR EVERY SHOW I DO, I EAT BEFORE BED...

Every time i have a meal i will have carbs with it no matter what, but i have to agree with Vinny. I may not be the smartest one here about dieting but how do u get fat from eating carbs at night and what makes it so different from eating carbs during the day? If anyone has an answer pm me, I am always open to new information. Thank you very much

remember that carbs give you strength on the NEXT DAYS workout--so if you want to workout hardcore the next day and you cut your carbs the night before--will your strength suffer? probably
eat high quality carbs whenever possible-oats, oats, sweet potatoes, oats, and more oats out the ass

Thanks for this info...even when dieting for a show..I never ate carbs past 6pm...only greens if I had to. I have been the last couple nights, drinking a protein drink w/oats before bed and I wake up looking and feeling really good...so thanks...this was an eye opener for me.
damn...quite a few replies. Well......I believe in taking in lots of carbs while bulking. You get most of your calories doing this and its necessary for energy and mass gain. If your metabolism allows it...........I'd take in all the carbs you can. I eat a little sloppy for the sake of calories (Wendys, quiznos, corn dog or 2 two ;)....... but still get my "clean" calories in too. I'm a mesomorph so i don't really have to worry about too much body fat.......but an ecto might have to reconsider a more balanced diet......might have to take it easy on the carbs. An ectomorph may stop taking in carbs after 8:00 PM or earlier. But to be completely honest.......I would go ahead and eat carbs till i go to bed...........calories make you fat.....not those midnight snacks or eating before bedtime (unless your extremely carb sensitive.....which isn't common).
