View Full Version : 'Clean'....defined
I'm curious, can someone define what 'eating CLEAN' actually means? Is there some way to put it into words that I/we/you can keep in your mind next time you are stacking the grub on your plate?
I've tried the search, and yet, I'm still not sure I understand.
Thanks

Clean in my opinion are foods that have good nutritional value, lean proteins, good carbs and fruits and veggies.
Foods that will help to fuel the body for growth, energy and repair.
I look at food and say "Will this benefit me or hurt me if I eat it?"
If it benefits me, it is clean.

The only thing I can really add to that is home cooking, or a good sit down restraunt, I would never consider fast food as clean, even subway and such.....

i define it as from the earth. eat foods as close to their natural state as possible and your eating pretty clean.

Yeah i was thinkin the same thing... something thats not too processed. Also something thats not too high in sodium. Natural foods are also free of trans fat and generally low in saturated fat. Also low in sugar (unless its naturally occurring in the food)

x2. This is a pretty good definition of what "eating clean" entails. The less food processing done, the better.
thanks for the definition. its going to be...interesting applying this to my diet. its really hard knowing whats in my food as i dont prepare it, and i wonder if military food is any better for you than a big mac....
thanks again brothers...

Hey man, I ate in the chow hall for years, and you can find good choices in most of them. For breakfast, stick with oatmeal if you can stomach theirs, or the healthy cereals and skim milk. For the other meals, just pick the best choice they offer. You will no doubt have to sacrifice taste in most cases, but feel free to have a cheeseburger or chicken sandwich every once in a while to keep yourself sane. Most chow halls have salad bars too...definitely hit that up at least once a day. Of course, I can only speak for AF chow halls, so if you're in another branch, I really don't know FOR SURE. What branch are you in by the way? There's a lot of military Animals around here, look to any of us for help, we're all willing.

actually man, i got out of the navy about a year ago. im a contractor now, working for the army in baghdad.
i always heard AF chow was fairly tasty, but navy chow haunts me to this day! the chow we have in baghdad isnt so bad, im just curious how clean the people preparing the food are. it is KBR responsible for feeding us.

Sodexho is the company that does most of the Marine Corps's food. atleast, at all the training facilities (Parris Island, Quantico). and i really can't stand their food cuz its sooo high in carbs. I gain weight no matter how much PT or IT they throw at me. Their food is healthy, just gotta watch all those carbs. Cottage cheese, oatmeal, fruit fruit fruit. bagel, peanut butter. That's what I tried to stick to for breakfast. the other meals, it was usually, get what can be eaten with one hand and very fast.
Omerta is a great song btw.

Clean is anything I planned to eat. Of course veggies or lean proteins thrown in at will, still fall under the clean catagory. Basically to me, If it tastes good, Its not clean haha.

That's not how it really is. You can have really good tasting food that is good for you too, you just have to know how to look for/ prepare those types of foods.
bro, that as a joke.....you were meant to laugh

no to cold cereals
no to anything fast food, subway, deli, etc.
no sauces in restaurant, only steamed or broiled or baked in restaurant
nothing refined like white bread, white pasta, white rice

oh u kno it. but u kno what. since ive been eating like this for years, i think i have gotten tastebuds FOR the healthy food, so it even tastes to me really good. i enjoy eating it. unhealthy food ofcourse creates an orgy in my mouth haha, but i almost forgot what it all tastes like. ooo one question tho...to stay super lean, can i still intake decent amounts of complex carbs throughout the day. like yams and brown rice in evening and afternoon. or is that detrimental to striations and being super lean???

I agree. If it comes in a box, I won't eat it. I try to keep things simple.
Eggs, oatmeal, steak, salmon, yams, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and water.
thanks for all the help fellas. this is really clearing things up for me. a lot of these 'definitions' im applying to my choices at the chow hall. i wish i could go with twistedsteel's ideas, but alas, i just dont have the resources out here. doesnt matter, just trying to keep it as clean as possible.

hey man thx for the props. do what you can, and anything that u dont need if u can eliminate it, do it. but otherwise, do what u can. i just have great accessability to stuff and very little temptations cuz all people around me including my lady both love to eat clean. but keep it going my friend!!!!
