I'm dealing with elbow tendonitis and chins have been curtailed.

Did a search and came up 0 on dead hangs. Other than working the grip, if I do asstd. wide grip hangs for x amt. of time WILL they still be beneficial for the lats? Able to keep the feet off the ground 5-6 inches which alleviates crossiing the legs. Any advantage in adding the dip belt to for extra weight?

Mainly asking are DH's a useful exercise in themselves? Thanks!

They are a great way in stretching the fascia of the lats and yes, will help in growth. I would use straps, and add weight. Hang as long as possible, at least 1 minute. Do at the end of your workout.

To put it in perspective, a study was done with birds in which one did repitition like training, while the other had a weight hung from its wing, with out reps. At the end, the one with the weight hung from its wing had accumulated well over 300% of the muscle mass the reps bird had.

I do them every back workout. AFter I work out my back, I strap 2 45's around my waistthen use wrist straps to hold on and hang for 1 min.

As a DC trainee, Dead Hangs are done as soon as you drop the bar from your back workout for a full minute. Stretches the fascia and increases microtrauma to the muscles. I'd like to think they are very effective. If it gets too easy with BW, throw some plates on the dip belt and hang.

Thanks guys for the sharp detailed answers. At least I won't have to feel I look like a pullup noob.

Will try some different wide grips with the dip belt next time. Actually felt good to just hang around in the gym.

I'd put this in 'ask the pros' but didn't really care which pro might answer. But, I can see why it got moved.

Did 'em yesterday and today-pullup bar on the OLD Universal Gym setup; high enough so feet are off the ground. Used the widest grip (on the rubber handles) with straps & a bit inward. Did 25 on the dip belt; just to see; will bump up to a 45 next time & do this as you say at the end of a session.

Sounds weird, but the hangs feel good.
