just wanted to know anyone elses routine for a big powerlift. My dead ritual is as follows...

- put on my belt one less notch then I do for squats.
- crank my wrist wraps on
- chalk up my hands
-slam the bar in place I hate when the bar moves on me
- get some chalk on the bar
- step back, get in an air squat then jump up
- approach the bar
- get in my position, take the tension out of the bar, then let it rip!!!!

I think this is a good topic. It allows us to get into the head of other Animals out there. Hopefully it does not get halted. Here I go with my routine before a big lift, especially if it is a number I have not hit before.

-Make sure a good song is on that gets me going
-Wrist straps tight
-Belt good to go
-Chalked up hands
-I then take about 3 good deep breaths and zone out only to think of the lift
-My hands hit the bar, I must flush everything out at this time
-2 more big breaths
-Get a good grip
-Suck in my chest
NOW I LIFT!!!

Honestly for me I try not to think about the weight, I mean I know that this is gonna be a big lift but I try to keep my mind focused like its just another lift and nothing that I cant handle. Sometimes I lean on the bar and close my eyes (sorta meditate). And then without doing those little yelling things and all that, I just mount up and prepare the normal way. It Seems to work well for me, cuz if i do all the shit to get hyped it feels like im draining energy and lose focus.

I just psyche myself up...put the belt on and lift. Thats it.

haha, mine is quite simple... I just pace back and forth before the lift and then get right to it. No special routine here :(

hardcore we have a similar warm up style. I put my wrist wraps on last after all the other stuff because if I keep them on too long I can't feel my hands!

Spartan thats a good point that you don't do too much psyching up because it drains you of necessary energy.

great thread! For me goin for a max or something. Heres the ritual.

-Wrap the Inzer wrist supports OR put belt on for squats/deads.

-put on either Heretic Anthem by Slipknot or Dig by Mudvayne to get amped up.

-psyche up a bit, powerful flex or something

-have my training partner slap me in the face ( seriously, lol)

-get that shit done!!

Hell Ya! All these are great. You know what can be even better is getting a huge lift and being so totally focused that you dont have to say or do much of anything. Once the lift is done just knowing that you accomplished with complete silent mental focus is a damn good feeling. It is just one of those things where you end up screaming in your head "fuck yea, I did it!" Here is to all the Animals out there lifting big no matter how it gets done, just that the weight gets up......go get some!

I usually warm-up and stretch. Take three deep breaths and rip the fuck out of it.

Make sure my head's straight, wrench in that belt, think of Machine and PowerFreak watching over this lift and nail that mother!

And when you hit that big lift, that's a serious shot of adrenaline and motivation.

Think of what the human body is capable of..women pulling cars off of their kids and what not.

If they can do that with no working out, I can sure bench a couple hundred pounds.

I pull my hat down a little lower, Reach inside my shirt pull out my cross, say a few words, Kiss it, Let out a little war cry, deep breath and tear it up.

I use a lot of visualization and I see myself do the set before I perform it. I don't have a physical ritual. If it's squats or deads I may pace back in forth staring at the bar until I am ready.

Stare myself in the mirror....ask myself if i think i got what its gonna take from me....close my eyes, shake the bar, look up & lift....then put it down & be feelin the adrenaline rush through me & the fear of going heavier next time......haha..........good post...

- No Music- just concentration
- Mind set on the movement (form is crucial when you lift heavy espc. with the "Big 3")
- No People watching- just weights watching
- A look at the weight and think how much you've accomplished already
- No back and forth- just one step to the bar
- Take a deep breath and Lift/ Press
- Again a look at the weight and see you've accomplished even more now.

Excellent post! I've never analyzed what it is that I do on a big lift. Big is relative, of course, as my max lifts are nowhere near impressive. As a 20something I did a round-backed 365 deadlift at a bodyweight of 170 or so. Just gripped the bar and pulled like hell.

I do deads in my current workout program, but only 225 for 3 sets of 6 - 10 reps. Had been doing 3 x 5 reps with 295, but pulled something and couldn't walk right for a bit. At age 45 I'm still striving to improve my lifts, but it's [i]make haste slowly/i] for me right now.

Again, great idea for a thread. I'll be paying attention when I do deads in the next workout.

I am really habitual when going for a heavy weight, especially with squats...

-Take a drink
-Put the headphones in and up the volume
-Adjust my clothes (sleeves, shorts, etc.), just outta habit
-Shake out each leg 3 times to be sure I'm loose
-Grab the bar, hang back off the bar and take 2 HUGE breaths
-Pull myself up to the bar
-Go in and out from under the bar 3 times, set myself on the third and final time under the bar, take a final deep breath and...CRANK OUT THE SET

Seems like I got a thing for doing stuff three times...haha

I know this ties directly into the what song do you listen to before a heavy life, but that may just be for me.

I've got my music on the whole time i workout...i skip forward to a Lamb of God track, walk to my log book, stare at the number, i know how many need to be done. Take a sip of water. walk back over to where my set is going down. I twist my wrist straps, making sure they are tight, say "lightweight" and gett'r done.

Load a tremendous amount of weight onto the bench press bar, 500 to 600 pounds. Make a big production HAHA!

Really I like to visualize W/ my I-POD blasting some hardcore shit...

i usually try to shut up..
i dont speak to any one..only myself..and look at the weight angrily..

you know because our tendency is to take a prolonged rest interval for the final big lift..
another thing tht works for me is to do 10-12 reps with very light weight
(with some weight that you can do 30 reps )
only 15 seconds before the lift..

try it..really works for me..

sit there for a few minutes drinking way too much water out of habit. some chalk then throw on the belt last since it makes me breathe heavier when its over my stomach since i have a huge inzer belt. then more chalk because some of it got rubbed off on the belt. lift

I dont really do any psyching up.....I respect the weight and know that its going to be heavy.....Deeper breath then usual and a little tighter grip.....
