View Full Version : Attempting to rig more weights to DB's

Ok, my school gym refuses to buy DB's over 100lb.
What do you guys think of this. The rubber on the DB's are the hexagonal style, and so are the plates. If i took huge industrial zip ties (the kind you can release with your finger nail) and put them around each part of the hexagon, I should technically be able to attach 10 pounds to each end of the DB, right?
Anyone else Macgyver more weight onto DB's... I NEED TO FIGURE THIS OUT!
Duct tape is out of the question... haha

I'm thinking if I had two "+" shaped things of thick velcro fabric with a hole in the middle, I could make a really good device to lock more plates onto the end of the DB's securely... this might be the solution to 100 lb dumbbell blues...

try this......get some rope or twine and run two seperate pieces from the center. have one part go under the db and another go above the db, tie the rope/twine to the db handle. but if that doesnt work, i know you said no duct tape but.......

just zip tie two dumbells together at the handles one on each end and pull from the top one i wouldnt recomend this with pressing movements such as a DB Press or DB military but for shrugs and rows have at it ive done it before for shrugs kinda shaky at first but u will get used to it

Also, wouldn't that help with grip because it's thicker/harder to grab?

buy olympic sized dumbbell handles and put the plates on at the gym.
you can use bands or chains. Ive been wondering this lately, im trying to perfect a way to just use the end of a barbell somehow, hell then id even have a thicker bar to grab onto. If you can figure this out please share the results

good idea....the rest just dont sound 2 safe for my liking...

Ran into this problem when we needed heavier dumbbells in our crappy school fitness center. We did ducktape for a bit, bad idea. The only thing we could really get to work at least on pressing movements was to get in position with the larger dumbells and then have someone place a smaller dumbell on top of he other in a cross-shaped fashing( small dumbbell handle would slide in between your middle and ring finger). Not the safest or most comfortable approach but it worked. Be great if you could get magnetic plates or rings to stick on the ends.

I don't have any ideas, just wanted to say congratulations on getting stronger than your gym's DBs can handle. that's a great day when that happens

yeah, my toes are pretty fucked up as it is, my toe next to my big toe on BOTH feet got broken and healed the other way, or they swapped places and angles while sleeping...
i think im gonna buy those things man, those look solid... load them up 4 25's and slap on 10's... oh yeah mother fucker
