So it begins...the next journey. Tomorrow, February 23rd will be my first 30 minutes of cardio at 5:15 am to kick off the beginning of my show prep. The contest is the Oregon State Bodybuilding on July 12th. Thanks in advance to all who choose to join me on this 20 week journey that will lead me to my first show.

Missed my hydrostatic test due to a flight delay coming back from the Arnold. House is predicting me to come in somewhere around 10-12%. God I hope he's right. I'll be happy with anything under 15. I'll post the new time when I get it.

Normally arm day is on Monday but hey, can't argue with life. Tuesday will do just fine. Had a great day today anyways.

I always hit tri's first with standing extensions, then close grip bench and finish off with incline tricep extensions. Then on to bi's with hammers first, seated incline dumbell curls and finish off with lying curls.

I think the Classic throws the entire damn airline industry into a tail spin.... my trip to and back from Columbus were both about 13 hours total. lol, so I feel you pain!

On a better note, it was awesome catchin' up with ya man. Had an awesome time chillin with you and J-Dawg... and The Lad is always a trip to have around lol. But it was really cool just shootin' the breeze. Good luck in the future weeks bra, I'm behind ya... see you in a few weeks!

Hey bra, since your just starting into your cutting phase... have you started to de-load any or still still killing with as much as you can stack on every set? I'm kinda up in the air with what I wanna do, it's hard to cut the weight back.... but I've read it's alot less injury prone when gettin' ready to show stop on stage. What you think?

I go as heavy as I can but still maintain 12 - 15 reps + on most lifts. To answer your question..yes..The initial cut on carbs from averaging 550 grams per day to 275 grams will take me a couple weeks to fully adjust to. After that I'll start getting into the zone and the carb drops will follow in increments as my appearance dictates. Your going to kill it up there bro..let me know when and where.

Tomorrow is 18 weeks out already...been doing 30 minutes of cardio 6 days a week and will increase to 45 minutes March 12th. Been hangin around 275 grams carbs and 400 grams of protein per day for now. My trainer will give me some recommended adjustments after the hydro test Monday. First cheat meal this Saturday between 6:30 and 7 pm. I'm already thinking maybe kfc mashed potatoe bowl or something along those lines...

Ok, so forget waiting till after the test on Monday to make adjustments..trainer wants me on 2 1/2 lbs of chicken/fish and a couple protein shakes for protein sources. And carbs are now 50 grams for the first three meals only. First meal has 1 cup of oatmeal and 16 oz total of yams for the next two. 150 grams in all. Now I feel like I'm dieting for a show...reality check for sure.

Official weigh in today at 244 lbs. Height at 5' 10 1/2 ". Jackson-Pollock 3 pinch came in at 11.6%. Hydrostatic bodyfat came in at 17.4%. My tech said that the numbers shouldn't have been that far off and that it was because my shorts were too big and that I wasn't blowing out enough air. The average comes to 14.5% between the two but she said my appearance favors the 11.6%. House guessed me between 10 and 12% and obviously he was right on the money with that estimate.

So my goal now is to weigh in at 235 lbs with 8% on May 5th which will keep me on pace for about 227 lbs at 5% on July 7th. Then I only need to drop some water and come in just under 222 lbs for the show.

Only time will tell how this will play out...but so far I'm on target.

First bump in cardio took place this morning. 45 minutes. Slow and steady. The mind and the training are feeling the impact of the carb depletion but slowly starting to adjust. carbs at 50 grams for the first three meals and protein set at 440 for the day as of right now.

So far so good. Weighed in at 240 lbs this week. Noticing some lines coming in here and there. Waist is starting to shrink up a bit. Concentration is starting to improve since I've been feeling like I'm in a fog. Been hitting the cardio 45 minutes first thing in the morning still and my appetite took a pretty good jump over the weekend so my trainer bumped my protein 4 oz beef and 4 oz chicken. So the eating routine looks like this as of right now

6 am

12 oz top and 1 cup oatmeal

8 am

80 gram protein shake (Ultra Iso Whey)

10 am

16 oz chicken and 8 oz yam

1 pm

12 oz orange roughy and 8 oz yam

4 pm

80 gram protein shake

7 pm

16 oz chicken and salad

Cooking up and prepping everything in the morning, packing it in my cooler and it never leaves my side all day. This has been key so far.

Better than expected leg day Tuesday, Wednesday off and hammered chest and shoulders today. Lower body is holding strong but chest and back are a little weaker. It's the carb level.

My trainer adjusted both shakes to 60 grams each instead of 80.

Weight holding at about 239.5

Good bro...just finished moving into my new house. That was fun trying to drum up enough energy to move a bunch of shit. Had some friends there to help so it was all good.

Training and diet all going good. Dropped a little weight moving to my new house, but I pretty much expected it. Weighed in this morning at 234 lbs. Conditioning is starting to come in pretty good. Strength is still doing really well. Still following the same meal plan...4 lbs meat and 150 carbs per day.

Training and diet all going good. Dropped a little weight moving to my new house, but I pretty much expected it. Weighed in this morning at 234 lbs. Conditioning is starting to come in pretty good. Strength is still doing really well. Still following the same meal plan...4 lbs meat and 150 carbs per day.

I'm jealous! I'm only allowed 100 carbs/day... But, I got a bit of a pudge during the "offseason" and recovering from surgery. Congrats on the new house, btw!

So the next adjustment came right before the weekend. Weight started droppin a little too fast again so trainer added 4 oz chicken and 8 oz yam. Always good to add carbs. Don't expect that to last long. Weights now holding at 233.5.

I neglected to share something about my last trip up to Seattle that definitely belongs in this journey.

The level of comittment required for these shows, you all know is incredible. So I fly in to Seattle on Friday morning and I had already mapquested the Whole Foods close by. I call it the chicken hunt. I go over and pick up my almost three pounds of chicken breasts needed for the day and my one pound of yams to finish off my carbs for the day. Immediately go over to the Emerald Cup and set up. Doors open and I'm ready to rock. Afternoon break and I hit the hotel, check in and hit the bike. First 45 minutes of cardio. Shower, eat and back for the evening portion of the show. Show ends at 10:30. Back to the hotel, change, hit the bike at 10:50 pm for my second session of 45 minutes on the bike.

Saturday morning, wake up, hit the bike for 45 minutes. Head over to Whole Foods to pick up my food for the day. Doors open at the show 9 am. Ready to rock. ABC get together at a local gym, eat, back to the show. Show ends and I'm out of there at about 11:30 pm. Back to the hotel...that's right 45 minutes of cardio starts at 11:55 pm.

This belongs in this journey for obvious reasons. When you make a decision to step on stage, it's serious business. You have to be ready...the guy standing next to me will be...

Things are still going really well. Weight holding at about 227.5. Been going through a bit of a body comp change where my weight is staying about the same but leaning out and putting on a small amount of lean muscle. I'm not going to argue. Trainer has me on a progressive carb spike because I have been completely draggin ass. Carbs have been at 150 grams for the last 9 weeks and just went to 200 yesterday, I'll hit 250 today and 300 tomorrow. Then back down to 150 on Thursday. This will amp up my metabolism and get it ready for the last half of the journey. After all, this Saturday will be the half way point already. Tomorrow, Wednesday, will be another bump in cardio to 1 hour and 45 minutes. Week from tomorrow will be another bump to 2 hours per day. And carbs start getting cut right after that. Here we go.........

Had a good back, traps and rear delts day today. First day back after the 'Push' with the progressive carb spike. Back down to 150 grams. The hour and 45 minutes of cardio I split into two 53 minute sessions. Wednesday the 7th I bump to a straight 2 hours probably for most of the rest of the way depending on how my body responds. The 'push' caused my body weight to hit 230 lbs and I feel a bit more energy going into the last half of this up hill battle.

Even my trainer told me he might pull me back on cardio as we get a little closer since that fat is dropping quick. He told me today he felt like a proud papa...when he's happy, I know I'm on track. Bam doesn't fuck around when it comes to his competitors.

Training still going strong. Actually holding strength still even at only 100 grams of carbs a day. That makes my carb cutoff 10 am...none the rest of the day. So far so good...nothings fallen off yet...

Last Wednesday the 14th Bam had me do another clean carb spike. In addition to my normal protein I had a total of 4 cups of oatmeal and 1 pound of yams by 1:30. Had a mild case of gorilla gut but loved shoving those carbs in. It was just what my metabolism needed to head into the next round.

Today I weighed in at 225.5 lbs. Leaning out real nice. Won't get another bf check until July 7th which is the Monday before the show. It's all me and the mirror until then. grabbed that shot after 120 reps on extensions, 150 reps on press and after my first set of 20 on squats......lots of blood leaves no cuts. I'll put another pic up when they are rested. The difference in cuts is unreal....

Alright so here's the deal. Been dragging ass the last few days, little difficulty sleeping, blah blah. I'm training yesterday and I'm noticing that I'm just completely burnt out, not into it, but I push through and finish. My trainer calls and asks how things are going. So I tell him how much life sucks but I promise to suck it up. He asks me when was the last time I had a day off.....I think for a minute....and realize it's been about 87 days since my last day off!!! So...he gives me the day off today. Didn't matter what I had scheduled for training, cardio, nothin....Also added 150 grams of carbs bringing me to 250 for the day...life is good today. I'm really going to take it all in and enjoy every minute of it....because there will not be another one until after the show.

I had submitted some mandatory poses to my trainer so that he could review some progress I've made recently. I'll get those up sometime or another. He said I looked like I was right around 6% and he's very pleased with my conditioning. My point is that I earned this day today. I have two more bf tests coming up....one June 12th and the last July 7th. We'll see just how lean this body can get....

When Vinny G was training me for my third show in NY, he knew what a workhorse I was already and knew it would take pulling teeth to ever get me to rest. Being I was here in the UK and he was there in NY, it was hard for him to keep an eye on me too. He would see right away in my pics that my body was overly stressed and he would tell me, in what I assumed his "mean boss" voice sounded like, LOL.."Toni...you are going to rest this whole wkd, your body looks stressed...take these days off and get away from your body."

I was always one of those types that felt guilty taking days off the gym, especially during show prep..so this was super hard for me to soak in and understand...as far as what he meant and the benefits to resting in the long run.

Well, I sucked it up for like the first time ever, and took the wkd off training...been years since I ever took 3 days off straight in a row!

Low and behold Rage, I came back better than ever...all those days of just barely pulling through an intense wo during show prep were over. I suddenly realized how important rest is and how it benefits your training and the big picture overall.

So...I hope your rested up now and ready to get back to where you really left off...anyway, by the looks of YOU....you have nothing to worry about and can surely afford some more rest days. You got the right stuff man! ;)

I can totally relate to you on that now...on my off season training I always had the weekends off, but you of all people know what it's like when your prepping for a show. The accountability is there and you know that each training session counts even more...thanks for sharing your story.

you eat yams or sweet pot's? they are a bit different taste and texture-wise you know; both low on the GI scale. I love them both...anyway,

I wanted to ask you a question about BF. I see you get your BF done for show prep. I never ever knew what my BF was for shows or even now..I just never bothered with it. Is this something that you always go by for show prep? I always was under the impression, that judges didnt care wht BF you were cause its not like they ask, but its safe to assume that your pretty darn low for a show anyway. Maybe this is my amatuer way of thinking or because I havent done any real high end type shows other than the Arnold, (hmmm, maybe I should have taken my BF for that one, LOL)...I just never thought it was necessary..till now, as I read here that you check yours often.

Im just picking your brain as to why you go by BF. I hope this isnt the most retarded question you were ever asked, but Im really curious about this.
