Yup, I fucked up for a few weeks back there, time was getting the better of me, as well as some laziness on my part. I think it happens to all of us at times. I'm back on track now and doing my best to kill it day in and day out. Gotta get the work done, no excuses.

Ofcourse, man. We are all human. There are weeks we feel strong and there are weeks we drag our ass to the gym. Or maybe not even. Its all good. Nobody has a perfect record. I for one wouldnt even want one. But at a certain time, you gotta pick it up again. That is not making excuses. That is just how you deal with life and the challenges.

Hey everybody. Sorry for the absence, been busy.

Trip to Virignia was awesome, had a great time as always. I even won a medal! Tenth place in my class for 50 yard musket, yeah buddy. Shot like shit with most of the team events though, definitely need to practice.

Last two weeks I took it easy. Getting back and adjusted to work was stressful, and there was some stuff I needed to catch up on and get done. Needless to say free time was limited, and I was catching up on sleep as well. Just felt like I needed more of it and glad I did so. While the gym can help with stress, sometimes it can add to it as well.

Anyway, I'm itching to get back on the grind tomorrow. Going for a high-rep light weight week, with quick and brutal workouts. Can't wait to get in there and do some damage...

While the gym can help with stress, sometimes it can add to it as well.

I like that some people can realize this, and you're 100% right. Trying to make time for the gym when you simply don't have enough in the day can definitely add to the stress level. You end up rushing to the gym, and then your mind wanders frantically between sets as you plan out what you have to do postWO, and shit tends to become a mess. Rest up, reset the system, and get back in there, P.

Indeed.
I found it out the hard time last year. Too much on my mind. Losing my job, trying to get prepared for a meet, trying to set up my own business. No wonder things went downhill in the gym. It was just too much. No focus, no drive, no appetite.
Making time for the gym is a good thing. But if you HAVE to MAKE time to get your workouts in, it can get tricky mentally. It can complicate matters greatly.
This matter is overlooked sometimes.

Cant wait to see what damage you did, big man!

Just a small question for you, Phil.
You are one of the brothers i look for when i need inspiration for shoulders.
Together with chest, those two are my most inconsequent and weaker points. Somehow i dont have a good 'feel' for the shoulders.
rcrott1 has given me the tip to try shoulderpresses with bands and that sounds like a golden tip to me. i will def start trying that.
Do you have any tip for me? I have a hard time with lack of feel with presses. I am sure i do most of that work with triceps and could add more shoulder in it if i knew how. Upright rows i feel VERY well. Just as front raises. Its the pressing (same with bench) that i am not feeling.
Any tips / ideas / suggestions / experience, buddy?

Just to hold you over until Phil can get some time, have you tried doing some rest pauses? I've encorporated those a lot lately (Seeing as how I'm running DC right now.) Also drop sets are a good one for a bigtime pump. And finally don't forget supersets...

Just a few thoughts to try and stimulate more thought. Not wanting to steal any thunder from Phil though... Just know he's a little busy right now.

I am sure Phil doesnt mind. And THANK YOU. That might just have been an eye-opener. In the beginning rest paused squats helped me a lot with regular squats too.
At least, i assume you are talking about restpaused mil presses here? Let the bar linger a second or two on the lowest point of the rep?
If you did mean that: THANKS a bunch. I will def try that; sounds like a good idea.
If you didnt mean that: THANKS anyway, cause it still lead to this idea =))) But in that case: what do you mean with rest pause?

Thanks Gavin! It was nuts.

Don't mind at all bro, this is what the Forvm is all about.

What's the good word in here, P? Shoulders, legs, and back, eh? What made you hit them all together?

Same old same old my man. Had to make up for missed sessions, hence the craziness.

Sure, buddy! Take your time, me and the iron aint going nowhere.

Nope, cool with me.

Things are looking mighty good in here!

Thanks Derek! Just doing my thing.

Absolutely. Half assing it is more of a waste of time, then taking extra time off and coming back tomorrow with 110% effort. It's also an injury risk, because if your heart and mind are not in it, you're not going to be doing things the way they need to be done.

What a shitty day. Dealing with bullshit all day at work as usual.

Then I get the news that the Blackhawks traded my absolute favorite player in all of sports, Dustin Byfuglien, to that Atlanta Thrashers...who aren't even a real fucking hockey team (at least in my book)! I knew trades were coming, but this one hurt. I was seriously devastated.

About 6:00 the sky was green and we all got pulled off of the phones due to a tornado warning. That lasted about 30 minutes, then it was back to work for the rest of my shift. Thankfully the weather had passed by the time I drove home. Things were fucked up everywhere and the power was out all over town. So, no gym. Power was out at home so cardio was out of the question there as well.

Power didn't come back until late this morning, so I missed AM cardio as well.

I'm about to go hit shoulders, and then tomorrow will be back and legs.

Good decision. Your body lets you know, listen to it.

Just a small tip from me: once i start hitting higher weights on rackpulls, i have someone give me a good slap on my upper back. That gives a good tingle in the area and gives me good 'feel' for the muscles i am about to use. Works for deadlifting for me also.

What doesn't make sense about this is that my bullshit company says that they aren't recognizing/observing July 4th as a company holiday, since it falls on a weekend. Therefore, they don't have to pay people or give them comp days for the holiday. However, they are staffing like it is a holiday, even though apparently it isn't. Fucking assholes.

That's BS. You should be getting a day off or holiday pay for Sunday or Monday, one of the two.

Agreed.

If I normally had to work on Sundays, I could understand it. Or, if it were being treated as a company holiday, since sometimes you have to work on a holiday even though it's your normal day off. But the fact that it's being staffed like a holiday while not being treated like a holiday is complete and utter horseshit as far as I'm concerned.

I mean, I know I'm fortunate to have a job and all, but bullshit is bullshit. Corporate nonsense makes me sick.

Last few weeks have been hectic to say the least. Been trying like hell to find another job...in this economy I am thankful just to have a job, but work is getting to be intolerable and I can see the writing on the wall that things are only going to get worse...

I fucking love it how some of these places (mine included) are using the job market as an excuse to treat employees like dogshit and constantly fuck with them and make their lives as miserable as possible knowing full well that for the majority of the employees there is nowhere to go. I try to keep myself grounded and get others' perspectives, and most if not all of my co-workers agree. Furthermore, the people who have been there said that things used to be alot better, but that starting about two years ago they started to turn the screws...just about the same time the market collapsed, how very fucking convenient...

Anyway, my ultimate goal is still law enforcement, I have not given up on that. However, I have to find something else in the meantime or I am going to lose my mind...

So, I have been searching like hell and applying where/when I could. That, along with some other things has been taking up alot of my free time.

Training has been so-so, got in what I could when I could, definitely less than ideal. I realized that going after work just isn't cutting it, and that I'm not getting enough sleep, so starting tomorrow I am getting up earlier and going before work. This should make training better, and give me more flexibility time-wise especially on the weekends.

Let's do this.

Totally understood, brother!
If you are mentally not in a good place, either because of work or whatever, its hard. I am facing the same problems as you with the exception that i dont have a job.
I hope you find something better, buddy. Its not a lot of fun if you have to go to work that doesnt inspire you (anymore). Being treated like a disposable item certainly kills my motivation, and i am sure it does yours.

Good luck on the hunt! Nevermind the training; i know its hard to train in those circumstances. Reminds me of the trouble i had last year. You just dont have the focus and energy left to put in that extra oomph. It all feels so-so in the gym.
Hope your new schedule works out better.

And yes, be glad you DO have a job right now. Hold on if you can until you find something nes and keep accepting those paychecks =) It puts food on the table.

Phil, believe me, I know EXACTLY what you mean about jobs. I've been so dicked over by mine the last two years that I've only narrowly avoided "going postal". Last spring I spent three months being told NOT to work on a project only to get a phone call from upper management in April asking why it wasn't done. I LITERALLY beat my head against the wall that day. I haven't had a raise since 3.25% in April 2008, am making less money than I was making in 1995, had two promotions taken from me and given to people of other ancestry more like that of senior management, and am ready to go ballistic almost every day.

At 56, though, my chance of finding other work is, well, slim. No one wants us "old folks". So, I'll be striking out on my own when I move to Kentucky. At least the cost of living is lower there.

Get the iron work done once the rest of your life is in line. In the meantime, let the gym be your refuge. It's certainly been mine.

I'm not going to lie. I need to get fucking serious. Gym-wise, the past several months have been more or less of a wash. Plain and simple, my head has not been in the game.

Skipping workouts, eating shitty at times, half-assing it, going through the motions, making excuses...I've done it all.

Really, there is nobody to blame but myself. I should know better.

Essentially what happened was that I let things going on in my life get to me too much. The gym became a burden, as opposed to a refuge. Instead of being a place where I could blow off steam, I came to view it as another source of said steam.

I've had enough of it. The past few weeks I've done some real soul-searching, and I've forced myself to confront the truths that I've outlined above. From this, I find myself with a new sense of purpose and renewed motivation.

Nobody is going to make things happen for me. I have to make them happen for myself. I can continue to go through life, day after day, being fucking miserable, hating and feeling sorry for myself...or, I can make myself the leanest, meanest, motherfucker out there. This is something that I CAN and WILL control. I CAN and I WILL make things happen. And, as the icing on the cake, I am going to view this as a great big FUCK YOU to the powers that be...they may try to beat me down, but I am going to keep on coming back swinging.

No excuses. Let's do this.

And, as the icing on the cake, I am going to view this as a great big FUCK YOU to the powers that be...they may try to beat me down, but I am going to keep on coming back swinging.

No excuses. Let's do this.

I hope i can give you comfort in the fact that i know where your coming from. I have felt exactly the same last year when things started dwindling down at work, personal level, health. Everything became a burden, everything turned against me.
At least, that is how perceived it for a while. The health issues were real, but even those i could have handled better.
How i came back to my senses is not even important.
The fact that i came back is.
I see the same here.
Your journey is still there. Your path is clear. You just got caught in a small detour covered in mist and hurdles. You did the wise thing. Backtracking, remembering. Going back to why it started.
Thats all that matters.

Now, you go DO what you were born and sworn to do, brother.
I am alongside all the way.

Haven't been in the gym since Tuesday morning, but for with good reason...

I have a great uncle who has a live-in caretaker. Tuesday night, his caretaker had to go to the hospital (he's ok), so since then I've been helping my dad out. Because of this I haven't been able to work out, as this has taken up most of my free time. Thursday we had to take my great uncle to the hospital (he's ok too), so that took all of the late afternoon/evening...I got home and only got about 4-5 hours of sleep prior to work yesterday. On top of all this I've developed a cold, and the lack of sleep is definitely not helping that, lol. I have a wedding to go to this evening right after work, so no catching up on sleep for me just yet...

Needless to say that I was not able to complete "reset week" as planned, so next week will still be my "reset" week.

I'm sorry for not catching up on people's journeys, I will do so when I have some time...I just wanted to pop in and give people a heads up.

Hey there sportsfans. I'm still here, just popping in to let you all know that.

Been busy, tired, pissed off, stressed out, and an assortment of other things, hence my relative absence.

It's all good in the hood though, last few weeks have been really solid.

Anyway, I'll have a full update sometime this week. I've got some big news...as a teaser, let's just say I'm taking the reins and giving "the man" the finger. Same journey, just taking a different road to get there. And I'm not talking about lifting or working out.

Hello everybody. Sorry for the lack of updates.

I got really shitty and sloppy back in the summer and fall...I put on shitty weight and training was spotty at best. To be honest, I was embarrassed to be on here.

Things are different now. I'm back in the swing of things and feeling good, ramping up the training week by week. I haven't been keeping a logbook, but that will change soon. For now, I've been focusing on the workouts themselves and not the numbers.

I will be catching up with everyone on their journeys here soon. I might not always be posting in there every day, but rest assured that I am reading/following. I feel bad for losing touch with people on here, and I have definitely missed this place.

Following will be a post regarding my big announcement from back in November...

Phil800101
02-03-11, 2:11 am
I quit my shitty job on New Year's Eve. As my earlier post indicated I planned to do so in early November. For those of you who didn't know, I was a customer service representative (licensed insurance agent) for a large insurance company. I had started there in sales back in October of 2008, and transferred to service just about a year ago.

There are several reasons that I decided to do this. First and foremost, the job/schedule/pay totally sucked. I was miserable, and things were not getting better. I put my best foot forward day in and day out, and truly did the best job I could. Regardless, it didn't matter. Without going into too many details, I'll just say that the company did not give a flying fuck about service or customer satisfaction. Furthermore, I was going nowhere. Two years stuck in an entry-level position, with no prospects for advancement or even a lateral transfer. I was well-liked by both my peers and managers, and they felt I did a good job...of course, this did not matter to the higher-ups in the company. To add insult to injury, as of 01/01/11 my schedule was going to change and I would be losing my 10% shift differential, so in essence my pay was getting cut. Needless to say it was not good If you want further details, please PM me and I will be glad to discuss them, I just don't think that this is the place for me to bitch about my former job.

As many of you know, it is my goal to become a law enforcement officer. I was on the waiting list for the Sheriff's Department in my county, as a certified applicant (having gone through the whole battery of tests and interviews minus the final physical test and medical exam). That list expired...after two years. I have kept my eyes peeled for openings anywhere in the Midwest, but things have not looked good. I know I could move out West or down South and have better luck, but I do not want to leave the Midwest. So, at present job prospects in LE look pretty damn slim. I have also looked for other work as well, but the market is terrible to say the least.

So, facing these options, I decided to act. I will be enrolling in grad school in the fall to obtain my master's degree and certification in special education. I have my BS in psychology, so right now I am taking a prerequisite course and looking to take the GRE and basic skills test sometime this spring. My dad has been teaching high school special ed for over 20 years, so I am familiar with the field and the working environment/conditions, and I think it is something that I will enjoy. Plus, the pay/benefits aren't bad, and there is a pension. Hiring does suck at the moment, but special ed is still doing ok, and I wouldn't be done until 2013 at the earliest.

Ultimately, I still plan on being a cop. However, with the economy and what not it is really anyone's guess as to when hiring will start again. Being a teacher, I'll have a solid job that will also be rewarding and meaningful. Furthermore, I need to have a solid back-up plan in case things don't work out or something else happens. As it stands, the psych degree in and of itself isn't much for me to fall back on sad to say. The last thing I want to happen is to be stuck in some dead-end job 5-10 years from now wishing and hoping.

So, there you have it. I'm pretty fucking excited. I really feel like I'm grabbing life by the balls and taking charge of my own destiny. Before, I felt like I was spinning around in circles, with no control whatsoever over my future. Yes, I had a job, which in and of itself is something to be thankful for in this economy when so many would kill for just about any kind of work. However, at the same time I felt like that in that job I was just digging myself deeper and deeper into a hole that would be harder and harder to get out of as time passed. Now, I feel completely different. I looked at my options and realized that this is something that I can afford at the moment, both financially and mentally, and that the time to act is now. Is it a risk? Of course it is. But life is risky and nothing is certain. As is the motto of the British Special Air Service (SAS): "Who dares wins."

Excellent news, brother, and the best of luck. Sometimes taking a risk, and bucking the current circumstances is the best possible thing to do. I have no doubts you did the best you could with the previous job, but some things cant be changed through normal means. Glad to know you are getting life on track to where you will be happy, and Im sure we will all be wishing you the best in life and lifting.
