Why do bodybuilders get so singled out? We pose and look at ourselves in front of the mirror, and if we do that we get looks, judgements upon us, stereotyped, isolated. Well, look at a musician, might he not listen to his own music, perhaps even singing along or tapping his foot to the beat? Sure. Maybe he plays it over multiple times, adjusting the beat or the words here and there to make sure it sounds the best it can before it is presented to others; he polishes off the finishing touches. Maybe he listens to it long after, just to hear what he has accomplished to feel some pride in his work. Or how about an artist? Might HE not look over or critique his work? Would he maybe frame some of his work and hang it up all around his room or house, or display it on a shelf in plain view? Of course. Also, like mentioned with the musician, he may either judge his work to change things up in different places where he sees it can be improved, or he might just display something and look over it from time to time for some glory that he feels he deserves for his hard work. Does the musician, or the artist get looks or bashed on for this? No, it is perfectly acceptable. So why bodybuilders? Why the bad rep? Do we not also have the right to stand proud of our hard work? or critique our progress thus far so as to judge what we need to improve?

Here's my take on it, there is an underlying difference in correlation: it "hits closer to home" so to speak.
Someone may witness this artist looking over a piece of work, and say "Wow, I wish I had talent like that, that's great." or even say that they are jealous, and it's even quite possible that they actually are. But there is an underlying argument where they tell themselves "Well I have nothing to do with art" and/or "I'm not even good at it, and I've never thought about going anywhere with artistic ability" such as making a profession out of it, or just showcase some work. So they tell themselves that art doesn't relate to them, they have something different they are good at, so they show respect and say "that person has a passion and is good at what they love to do, good for them." It doesn't matter if they themselves aren't good at art, because they can replace it with something else they love to do, they can forget art and move on with what they care about.
Moving to the flip side of things, they see someone looking at themselves in the mirror. Now in this case, does the witness have something to do with physical development? Of course they do, they have a body of their own as well. They can't say to themselves that physical attributes have nothing to do with them, because it in fact does. Everyone has a body, so they can't forget about this and move on, they can not simply "replace" that passion (building a better looking body) with something else, because that body of theirs is still there, and always will be whether it looks as good or not.

Stand proud to look good, stand proud to defy the mainstream and being good at the one thing that NO ONE can turn away from, that EVERYONE must relate to. Stand proud to be Animal.

i sometimes used to be nervous or something trying to look at myself in the mirrors in the gym, felt like every one was thinking like what is that guy doing, does he think hees big or something? people my age arent even intersested. some guys i kno wactually walk into the gym and do nothing but take up space. then one day i see the biggest guy at my gym, about 6'4 maybe 250-260 all muscle. and he does a set or two gets a drink and just constantly looking and what hees doing to himself, lats spread bicep pose always looking at how his back looks. so i though that guy is smart who gives a shit what they think whether it be jelousy, discussed, a big caveman, a monster. all he needs to know is that.. yep my back is a bit bigger. so now you can find me in between sets, checking out what im working, how i look . becasue thats a huge part of the game, how we look.

great analogy with an artist or musician by the way. puts it into prospective for anybody.

i think maybe the biggest arguement here is while a musician or artist may be displaying a talent, a bodybuilder is displaying himself, which to most correlates to vanity; something we've been taught is bad. to us its not vanity, its a quality check, but of course nobody seems to understand us.
