View Full Version : Cardio - 15mins high intensity vs 30 mins low intensity
So I'm bulking and I do cardio basically whenever I feel like it, or when I feel I need to. I was wondering if 15 mins of running fast or 30 mins of walking on an incline (in the morning or post-workout) would be more effective for maintaining muscle and burning fat.

I can tell you this right now. Whether you walk a mile or jog a mile, it burns the same amount of calories. Just when you jog, it burns the calories faster. So it's about distance, not speed.
I've heard conflicting reports of WHAT you burn while you do cardio. I think somebody told me that you are burning proteins when your heart rate is going high speed and fat/carbs when you are doing low HR cardio. This doesn't make much sense to me, wouldn't you first use gylcogen as your fuel regardless of however fast you are burning it; then you will start burning either protein or fat for reserve fuel? Can anyone clear this up?

runnin or hit cardio is glycogen demanding, so it will not only empty your stores but will probably use your lean mass for energy

dont run that will tap into the good stuff that your trying to build. Walk at a moderate pace at an incline. stick to about 30-40 minutes and thats it for maybe 3-4 times per week. if your doing it PWO the cardio, after the weights take some Nitro or some sort of amino acid supp, then do your cardio and hit up your PWO shake after the cardio. Keep the heartrate around 120-135 bpm

many will agree that high intensity cardio has a good chance of burning up muscle

I can finally give advice haha, this one of the topics I actually know well.
Do HIIT or Medium Intensity Cardio BUT make sure you're taking in 0 carbs before, and 15-20g protein(literally 15-30 mins before). Not too much protein to make you feel "full", but enough to preserve your muscle. Post cardio take in a normal meal but a little higher in carbs(like say 35g protein, 40g carbs). If you go into a cardio session and your last carb meal was say 2.5 hours ago, and your last meal was 20 mins ago and just whey protein it'll preserve the muscle and generally the glycogen levels are low.
Ok I have done both to death and if short hign intensity cardio is done correctly it is great, look at sprinters physiques compared to marathon runners but as its fat you are after burning I agree, a fast walk for 40+ minutes will burn fat and conserve muscle in my experiance.
