View Full Version : Your favorite shoulder routine for strength!
I need to work on my shoulders a bit more. Compared to the rest they are lagging in strength a bit. I might have to do them differently or more or less, dont know yet. I tried searching, but did not find a specific thread. If there is one, please feel free to point it out to me.
I wanna hear your favorite shoulder routines, especially for strength increase. I need more variation i think.
Normally my shoulder routine is mainly stuff like this:
Military or behind the neck presses, standing or seated (whatever i feel like that day)
Side raises (also bent over)
Upright rows
Front raises
Lately i have also incorporated shoulder pressing at a calf raise machine. A bit like a jump press, to gain explosiveness too. Been too short to see if it helping so far, but it sure as hell is great fun and heavy as hell.
Lemme know how you bust your delts for strength!

if your shoulders can take it, i would suggest overhead pressing. i love it, all sorts: rainbow presses, split stance, high reps, heavy doubles, etc. plus, it has a great carry-over to your raw bench press.
after overhead pressing, i'll do some sort of shoulder complex consisting of DB/plate raises at various angles, usually at high reps. thats about all i do.
oh, and raw benching utilizes lots of front delts as well.

Strength huh- Try this:
Hang Cleans: 4 x 10-6
Standing Barbell Press: 4 x 10-6
Seated DB Press: 3 x 10-8
Seated Side Laterals: 3 x 10
Standing Front Raises: 3 x 10
Shrugs: 4 x 10

These seems like a bit much for strengthening your shoulders. Maybe good for growing them, but if you do the first exercise heavy enough there's no point in doing the next 5. Keep it to one really heavy press with a good warm up and low reps. then work other angles laterals, etc... Save rear delts for super heavy bent over rows on back day.
One pressing movement all out ....try it rest paused with heaviest weight possible--then add weight to it every single time, do a static hold at the end, a stretch and your delts should be fried.
Thanks so far, brothers. I have some good idea's on how to mix things up now.
And Windmill85, as if you could sense the problem. I strongly suspect my shoulders to be the weakest link in my benchpress. That is why i am gonna up my game on them. Nothing like changing routine or trying new exercises to get them fibres working.
Thanks for the suggestion, Roland, will certainly try. Nice to see you coming to my aid =)

Well Bro, I have always had the Greatest Results for Deltoids by Doing Smith Machine Shoulder Press, the very strict movement I can really Isolate with a Mind-Muscle Connection even with pressing weights in the 315 range. Other than that, if your just going for brute strength the Push Press is a Great Excersise, for overall shoulder power along with most any Standing Barbell Excersise even though I havnt had much progress with cleans, and I feel, there a wasted movement with way to much bodylanguage helping you increase poundages not muscle increase. Along with Heavy Tricep Training ofcourse, which is an Incredible Factor in your Pressing abilities most any of the Barbell Shoulder Press Variations will gain maximum results. Remember bro, keep it simple. 5-8 Sets Initial Heavy Compound, and two small Isolations after for 2-3 sets.

Thanks, brother! I have started push press recently and i love it. I can really get my focus going on that one. I will also give the Smith a try!

Oh, and if your wondering, I was never gifted with powerful delts. It took me an entire, well, almost a complete year to get them up to par with my other presses with primary focus derived on them. This was only possible after two re-accuring serious torn Rotator Cuffs in my left shoulder, from Powerlifting, that made me look into what was causing this. Once I got them up to game, with my other lifts, I havnt had any type of shoulder pain problems since. Remember, If your looking to Build them with best results, focus all your remaining Srength into Triceps, Meaning Heavy Weighted Dips and Closegrip Benchpress on your Deltoid Day. Glad I could Help. Stay Strong.
