For the first time ever, I did deadlifts yesterday. Probably one of the best moves I have done so far. My forearms are dead, and I think it is just what I needed to start getting my grip strength up. I only did sets of 295X8 but by the last couple reps my forearms were failing on me. My back has never felt this good (if you know what I mean) The day after our Back/Biceps day. I have bruises on my shins today...I've read that with good form you should be as close to the bar with your shins...is this true? That was the one thing that we worried about is that if our form was 100%...
My stance was feet shoulder width apart, toes slightly pointed out, and my arms right off the outside of my legs and just pressed through my feet to stand up (like a squat) and lock it out at the top, bring it down, repeat.
I took one of the routines off this page and I think I am gonna stick with it.
Sounds like you've got the form down pretty good bro. Trust me I've had my fair share of blood loss from the shins. The king of exercises...welcome to the dungeon of the dead.

Lovin 'em now, wait till a few months from now when you will be seeing a much thicker back and added strength in all other lifts.
Starting first time on 295 x8, thats some 1st step...

Thanks a lot guys. These help widen your back as well Right? Is that what you meant by thicker back?
That's the main reason that I wanted to start throwing them in is to get my back better.

They'll hit the whole back, aswell as hams, glutes, quads, forearms and grip strength. But front to back thickness is there forte. Any powerlifter/Bodybuilder will always say they can spot a guy that doesnt deadlift, as they disappear when side on.

Thicken, widen, not to mention the lower body, traps, grip....

My whole crowd has always bled on deadlift day. I usually (and who knows why) end up in shorts or 3/4 length sweat or cargos on dead day and usually bleed a whole lot - my shins are scarred beyond belief (but they were like that from fighting before I ever got serious with the weights anyway). Big congrats on the choice to dead.
lol, my shins are scuffed tonight from deadlifting, blood on my bottoms, people look at you as if you are mad, one person commented that I shouldn`t drag the bar up my shins, No I replied thats exactly what I should be doing, some people eh?
Well done mate, Deadlifts are one of my fav exercises, extremely hard but very satisfying and your back will look totally diferent in 3 months time.

Gorillas have long arms.....Mine didn't get too bad, just bruised up a little bit, and the top of my knees got it good on the first one cause I bent my knees too early or somethin and get em under the bar.

thats a hell of a first deadlift :D
i love deads, they're one of my favorite lifts.
deads, dumbell presses, and squats are my three favs :D
I'm with you bro. Deadlifts are my favorite exercise. Like it's been noted, they hit a variety of muscles. When you get a little more experience, look up Tiny's thread in ask the pros. He has a deadlift/shrug routine that will kill you.

I will definitely look up the dead/shrug routine. I can't wait to do them again, haha. My friend liked them too, the other guy pussed out cause he said he didn't think he can get the form...he is too damn worried about people watching him I think. I am gonna get him in on them this week though.

Deads r the shyt.
When i first "discovered" it, i felt invincible. I look at my deadlift weight and think to myself, "no one in this gym can touch me or this weight" And you know what? everytime i do deads, and with the weight i do it at, ppl always look b/c they can't believe i do it!
I love it! and the feeling of seeing blood on my clothes and shins is motivating / hardcore for me. It's funny how you don't feel it when ur doing it, but u look at it afterwards, and just nod your head..job well done..

Deads are an AWESOME exercise. Separates the pretenders from the real deal lifters.

Deads are the SHIT! There's no muscle load before the rep like in other excercises. You go from nothing to everything in a split second. The true test of strength, the the one exercise that will make you grow like a weed on miracle gro.

Damn right. Deads are good stuff. I workout in a gym i Asia where people are a quarter my size. Don't think most have even seen someone doing deads. Well, when I load up that bar, I stand out like dogs balls, people are staring their eyes out.
Love the exercise.

2) Leave Your Ego At The Door
...We don't need to hear how you're better than everyone else in your gym, how you're more hardcore. There is always someone bigger and stronger than you... In here, we expect humility and respect... We expect an atmosphere of support and positive thinking. In here, the underdog will have his day. Cuz in the end, the only person that matters, the only one you need to impress, is the one looking back at you in the mirror.
I don't appreciate your comment, brother. What is that supposed to mean? What are you really trying to say? Do you truly believe yourself to be bigger and better than another race of people? Do you think there aren't any hardcore asian bodybuilders and powerlifters who MIGHT be bigger, stronger, and more dedicated than you are? Do you think that our brotherhood, our own Forvm, does not have any asians? I have even seen a jacked asian bodybuilder on his local television rockin an animal tshirt who probably barely spoke english. Did you think you were big n bad because you are the biggest in the small world that you call your gym? what does race have to do with anything? Shit like this strikes a big mothafuckin cord in me. be above the fray..

Edit: I realize that I myself might be breaking the Forvm rules. I don't think I am, but if so, I apologize for being a hypocrite. I tried to be as polite as I could.

Oh yeah I forgot to add I shrug at the end of every set of Deads too, Tiny put me on to this a while back, great way to add some thickness to your traps.

i don't think he was trying to belittle anyone although your frustration is understandable...back on topic-> deadlifts is what got me started in the weight world...i read a book about it(not sure if i can say which one) and something clicked into place...i started out with a 5x5...those were the days...

Race aside, deadlifts work. Agreed?
Agreed. Best exercise there is in my book.
question on deads form.
the way i do deads is i push with my heals.. using my quads until they are past my knees and then bring it the rest of the way up with my back. is this right?

If your shins are f'ed, then you are doing them correct! Make sure to always throw in 3 sets of 10-12 hyper extensions at the end of every back workout and pause each rep at the top. Lower back strength is true strength, I BELIEVE THAT without lower back strength a person cannot be considered "strong".

you said it brother!
as for the touch and go style of deads, i find that it compromises my form. I do my deads in a rest-pause fashion-1 rep, lower it, take a step back, clear my head(3-5sec pause), then another rep and so on
