According to Scooby (Link below quote):

In the muscle magazines you always hear about 'bulking' up then 'cutting' down before a contest, should you do this too? NO! Do you have to eat a lot to gain muscle? NO! Putting your body thru this ordeal is fine if you are a competitive bodybuilder using steroids but it has no place whatsoever in natural bodybuilding. The reason the pros 'bulk' is that because of the steroids they are not only retaining water but their appetite is increased significantly so they eat like pigs. At the end of their cycle they have gained lots of muscle mass but lots of fat too so they then have to go on a very strict diet to lose that 30lbs of fat for the contest. Wild weight swings like this can't be good for your body. There is no reason at all that you cant gain muscle as you lose body fat with good nutrition, weightlifting and cardio. It is much easier (and healthier) to keep your body fat stable and low than it is to pig out for a few months and then have to diet for 3 months to get all the fat back off. Why not be ripped all the time rather than just one month a year????? It's easier, better for your body and it looks better.

I'm not quite getting what he is aiming at here. I know I can gain weight while "minimizing" not shedding, bodyfat, yet I will need to gain some fat for optimal growth. As a beginner myself it kind of scares me to see things out on the web like this. If I did not know any better I would read this then consume a low cal diet and wonder why my gains are not coming. But I understand that to a point he is correct, however I feel he could have worded it somewhat better. Especially with the pros steroids portion.

How do you feel about the above statement?

I agree that not everyone should put on a ton of fat while bulking. The less fat you put on during a bulk the better, but the like you said your going to put on some fat while eating an excess of calories.

If "Scooby" has some special diet where you can shed fat while building muscle I'd love to hear it, but to be honest I don't trust anyone named Scooby anyway.

have no medical training or personal training credentials, my experience is practical:

25 years lifting experience.
Through good form I have never had an injury in the weight room, a real rarity in the bodybuilding.
Bodybuilding has allowed me to remain active and competitive in sports.
My B.S. in Engineering, makes me question everything.
Lots of experience recovering from sports related injuries (snowboarding, volleyball, water polo, etc).
With stretching, proper posture, and bodybuilding have keep my chronic back pain in check.

this is from his about me on the site

i dont think he has any good credentials or reason to why anyone should believe what this guy has got to say.

nothing against engineers, but thats what this guy is

so definitely do live by or go by what he says if your questioning anything imo
cause i sure aint

How this "Scooby" character would balance that out, on the contest stage one day or even on a platform with that type of thinking.

hm, i have a feeling he was probably fat in the past, or an endo. I'm just guessing though. I'm one of those guys who gain fat very fast and gain muscle slowly. So I'm kind of reluctant to pig out. I mean, pigging out can work for ectos who have no issues whatever with fat. But for some people who've been called names and made fun of, for those who used to be big and might be insulin resistant, the bulking phase really is a sensitive issue. Personally I can gain maybe 10 lbs in a week without really trying, and I find that I don't really get stronger even when I pig out on those weeks. Any input on this thread would really help.

im not exact on his thinking, but "dirty" bulking in my opinion is not going to be good for you in the long run, i think clean bulking, over the long haul, is going to keep you healthier (though maybe not quite as huge in the end) than dirty bulking like crazy until your over 15% BF then cutting off all that weight

personally, after i finish this cut, im going to never go over 10% BF, once i hit 10 on a bulk, ill cut till it goes back down.

ROOBY ROOBY ROOOO!!!! I agree...don't trust nobody who is named scooby and hangs with a bunch of stoners...

Eat BIG = Get BIG! Period...

Yeah, you don't want to put on a lot of fat while bulking, but you have to have fat to build muscle...thats how I got bigger...burnt off most of my fat to create muscle...Oh well. This is just IMO
