Alright, starting to eat smart now. Eating clean, going with plain oats in the morning, eggs, fish, chicken, veggies and fruit throughout the rest of the day w/out getting too detailed. I snack on peanut butter (chunky/3g sugar per serving, 7g protein) just 1 large scoop now and then.
I have a shake in the morning, after workout and before bed. I also down a small bowl of cottage cheese before bed.
I'm hungry all the time, but I'm trying to get away from just eating b/c I want to. Bodyfat is about 13% i would say, and I'm shooting for 7 or 8.
Aside from the peanut butter, I have organic yellow corn chips that I really like. Can I have salsa? And the big one, can I have Salsa con queso? (prolly not cuz of the cheese, but I didn't see anything terrible in the nutrition label.)
What do you guys (and girls) snack on when u gotta eat?

I've been carb cycling for almost 12 weeks, with 3 low carb days, 2 med carb days, and 2 high carb days. On the low carb days, if I'm too hungry to wait to eat again (I eat every 2-3 hours), I just have more clean protein - whey shake, lean meats, etc. One scoop of whey for what I'm using now is about 23 grams of protein mixed with 8 oz of water. Works pretty good.
And, more cold water on top of the shake to fend off hunger.

snack? what's that? you should only have meals when cutting. snacking only leads to missed meals and cheating.
and no salsa of either kind. ditch the chips as well. round out your meals. if you're still hungry then split up your meals into smaller ones and space em accordingly. if you're still hungry then drink water and deal with it. you want to get cut? gotta learn to be hungry.

you can make your own salsa that's much better for you and quite healthy. i the stuff i make on alot of things. but i've never been able to go with out carbs i've tried twice, and passed out both times from low blood sugar even though i was constantly eating.

Doesn't work for everyone, that's why no one diet is the same. I've done keto twice and just never found it worked well for me. I just keep my carbs around a 100g on w/o days, doubled on off days. It keeps me happy (and everyone around me) and I can still peel 2 a week without too great of an effort.
blues right, to lose weight all i have to do is eat clean carbs and meat and i just shed the pounds, i've just never followed a good diet for a length of time. i have two very obese parents who aren't interested in losing weight. no excuses though.

In my opinion a bodybuilder should never be hungry for food. If it gets to that stage, your losing muscle mass i reckon. The only problems with dieting i think should be craving foods. Therres a difference between being hungry for food and being hungry for nice sweet tasty food.
Hunger is a bad thing. Its a sign of over dieting and your body will rip away the muscle to stop you feeling hungry for more nutrients to feed your huge body and make it easier for itself. Body fat will be a second choice for fuel, coming after the highly metabolically active muscle!
almonds, peanuts, cottage cheese, fruit, protien shakes, tuna, cheese stick, beef jerky, dried fruit, peanut butter on some wheat crackers, celery and peanut butter, egg sanwhiches...

Thanks everyone! I guess I'll just buy a few more pouches of tuna and a few more cans of chicken in water. I can deal with that, and am getting used to the diet pretty quickly. Water, PB, and cottage cheese are usually what I hit if I'm hungry in between meals now, or I just dip into my big container of cooked chicken and cut a piece in half. Thanks again!

Hey sammy! Good job on going clean. I would say eat when hungry and until satisfied and make it a whole meal, consisting of fat, carbs, and protein. You said that you have oatmeal in the morning...I'm not sure if you have more than that, but I would definitely say add some healthy fats and some more protein to that. Try adding a few tbsp's of peanut butter and a scoop or two of chocolate whey. Eat that with milk and you have a decent meal.
Now to answer the salsa question, salsa is fine, and so are corn chips. With the salsa shoot for a brand with minimal amounts of ingredients, and stay away from ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup. But if it has it in there, its not a problem either. Eat all the chips and salsa you want, but try and accompany it with some protein as well (a beef taco would suit my fancy in that case).
As for good bulking snacks:
cheese sticks
beef jerky
pb sandwiches
milk
fruit
etc.

First off, make sure that you are drinking. If you get hungry, drink 10-15oz of water and wait for 15 minutes. If the hunger goes away, you then know that you were just actually thirsty.
Most people's thirst mechanism is interpreted as hunger. I'm not sure why that is, but it's a fascinating phenomena. Try it, you may be surprised.

i would have to disagree with this. the OP is currently going for size. almost anything he eats is turns to muscle, so i would not suggest by any means to 'wait-out' hunger. god gave us the feeling of hunger, whether it be for food, thirst, or a combination of the two for a reason: to get calories to our bodys when we need them.

I am sorry but I am going to have to disagree with you...
First of all food isn't turned into muscle...
Second if he is under hydrated... it can be passed off of a symptom of hunger... average person can live approximately 1.5 weeks without Food... You can barely live past 3 days without water...
If he is adhering to his diet and things are portioned out properly both in food/caloric amount and time... I would definitely say he is not drinking enough...

I disagree with you.
Food IS turned into muscle. Else where would the protein go? When a person gains 50 lbs because he overeats, where does he get that 50 lbs but from food? This is called the conservation of mass. The reason we eat food is because as our bodies dispose of waste daily, we need something to rebuild with.

he's right. thirst is OFTEN misinterpreted as hunger, especially when you aren't hydrating as often as you should.

What's wrong with salsa?...it has almost no calories at all. It's great to put on top of eggs for breakfast as well. Snack on a steak if you are hungy.

The problem with some salsas are that they have been over-processed. If you can find yourself an all natural salsa that is loaded with vitamin A and vitamin C go ahead and hit that shit up!

Food is turned into muscle, but EXCESS is turned into fat. If a person gains 50 lbs, it usually isn't 100% muscle, so where does the fat come from? ...the food! Now, with that said, inadequate nutritional intake will result in inadequate muscle gain. If you're body feels deprived, you should feed it (unless you are competing/seriously cutting). Not all food intake goes to muscle, but if your muscles need it, that's where it will go initially.
I disagree with you.

Well then you obviously understand that muscle growth is the result of stretching or tearing of myofibrils in the muscle fibers... In doing so it is these tears that receive mainly BCAAs that repair those tears... Over its a small portion of the protein you ingest is used to "grow", the other 95% of the food you eat goes into just sustaining your bodily process...
What's wrong with salsa?...it has almost no calories at all. It's great to put on top of eggs for breakfast as well. Snack on a steak if you are hungy.
Home made salsa is the way to go... I use it all the time... put it on just about anything...

well sorry to have started this debate, but i personally know the OP and he drinks at least a gallon of water per day [almost a gallon in his workouts alone]. so lets get this straight, he is not dehydrated or anywhere near, he is well hydrated. any signal he gets from his body should be for him to eat. he is BULKING, he needs excess calories. food should be eaten at all costs. he had minimal fat gains when eating a complete dirty diet, he will gain next to no fat bulking clean, so my advice is just eat whenever you have the urge.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, lets me know you really care. *tear*
I do drink at least a gallon of water a day. I carry my gallon with me almost everywhere I go. I saw a local BBer last night and asked him about chips and salsa. He shot it down b/c of the sodium content. 105mg/serving in the container I had grabbed, I looked it over, it had few ingredients and looked legit. He said go with straight/plain popcorn. I was miffed cuz plain popcorn sucks. And my chips were organic yellow corn, pretty sure I said that already but what the hell.
So to create another mass debate, how much sodium is too much? The reason behind it being the salt will retain water and make me look soft, correct?

haha those are delicious, I gotta get some these days
well, to give my 2 cents on the topic, snacking is kinda like a cheat meal... when I'm bulking I never worry about the snacking, and I do it, though I don't really crave anything, but on a cut I try to avoid it
while peanut butter is a good food, remember that too much of anything (with the possible exception of protein) will get stored as fat so don't think you can have as much as you like of it if it doesn't fit your macros... even if dietary fat doesn't get stored as fat, remember your body is burning it instead of your body fat, so anyone who thinks he can get away with eating half a jar of peanut butter every other day should think twice imo

yes, the sodium content in some of them can be off the charts. if you really want to have chips and salsa, just buy some canned crushed tomatoes, add in some spices, and cook up some onions and janipinos [sp?] and then add them in when they are cooked. it tastes just about the same, and you can control what is in it.
yes, you are right about sodium making you retain water. it will give you a bloated look if you eat too much of it, but its just water you're seeing, not fat. there is no set in stone limit per day on how much sodium you should eat, just try to make all you food come from uprocessed stuff, and you'll be fine. also, it might sound contra-productive, but drinking more water will make you less bloated too ;)
who was the local BBer btw?

wow if you believe that excess protein won't be stored as fat, then you have been reading a bunch of shit. what to remember excess CALORIES make you fat, not an excess of protein, carbs, or fat. to put it into perspective:
if your body burns 3,000 calories per day, if you ate 2,995 calories worth of fat, you would not gain a pound of fat. if your body burns 3,000 calories per day and you eat 5,000 calories of protein, it will be stored as fat. its all about CALORIES IN VS. CALORIES OUT

those were just my two cents bro... it's very unlikely that protein gets stored as fat due to its chemical structure and the fact that it actually boosts your metabolism making you burn more but I don't wanna get into detail

well you should get into detail or provide links, because you my friend are dead wrong. eating over your maintaince calories, regardless of if it is protein, fat, or carb, will produce SOME fat. although on a bulk you have to eat more than maintaince, and a little fat gain is expected.

You might be surprised. A pro bb'er on this forum recommends a cutting diet where you get waaayyyyy more protein then you would need, like over 2g per pound of bodyweight. And he actually recommends to have an overall calorie surplus, but because so many of the calories are from protein, and it takes so much energy to break the excess protein down, your metabolism is raised to such an extent that your body ends up burning fat, but you can still continue to put on muscle.
I think this is probably what simpleguy is referring to, and I'll try to find the link where Tiny explains this diet.

I know that he is bulking, but the point of this was that he wants to bulk cleanly. If he has set his portions correctly, and yet is still hungry, he will most likely gain fat from overeating.
A clean bulk is to gain muscle without too much fat. You can't do that if you are just eating and eating until you aren't hungry. There are a lot of factors that come into play here and overeating is just going to be detrimental to his progress.
Being underhydrated is going to be extremely detrimental to gains as the individual cells do not have the hydration necessary to work optimally. If you didn't know this, muscle is about 70% water anyways so you have to have lots of water/hydration to have muscle fulness.
The muscle building process is quite slow actually, unless there is exogenous hormone manipulation.

I cannot begin to tell you how OVERSIMPLIFIED this is. I won't even begin to make a discussion on it so as to not have an endless debate but you must realize that it is not simply calories in vs calories out. It is a myriad of complicated processes in the body and calorie in vs calorie out type of equations don't even begin to address these.

Thanks again to all of you for your responses. And thank you krazyassmexican for trying to keep the peace. While I do want to get bigger, at this point in time my main goal is to get my BF% down to about 7 or 8 %. I want to get there and maintain it. (approx 13%now)
I'm definately more ectomorphic than anything, but I'm not all that toned. Anyway, I initially posted this thread because before this I was on the *see-food* diet. I can eat whatever I want and look decent, but not cut. I'm asking about healthy snacking because I'm not used to eating controlled portion meals. My body is used to eating large quantities all the time (5 to 6 times a day). I didn't eat that clean either. Now i'm watching what I eat, still trying to get bigger, but cut the BF% down.
I looked at the quaker rice cakes, but wasn't sure if those were un-neccessary carbs. I thought my salsa and organic corn chips were healthy, but that got shot down. My body is adjusting to the diet, and I'm making sure I get my water in (which was never a problem). SO, this is what i eat, and yes I do get hungry for snacks which is why I posted this.
M1: 1scoop protein powder in water w/ half cup oats
M2: 1 chicken breast, steamed veggies, 1/2 sweet potatoe
PWO: 1.5 scoop protein powder in water w/ 1/2 cup oats-
M4(usually 1 hour after PWO): 1 small can chicken in water and 1 pouch (3oz.)tuna
M5: chicken w/ veggies, 1 or 2 spoonfuls of chunky peanut butter.
M6: 2 spoons peanut butter, small bowl of cottage cheese.
SO, any snacking suggestions w/ that? or should i just suck it up and quit bitchin?

few pieces of lean roast beef(has cla in it)
air popped popcorn
good qulity beef jerkey
raw nuts
good quality tortilla chips(not like tostitos) and good quality salsa
hard boiled eggs
beng youre not competing in mr olympia, which none of us are, i see nothing wrong w/ some small snacks every now and then, ie 3-5 chips, not whole bag!
i would aim for 6-8oz of meat per meal, thats like 40-50g of protein
on your diet id add a piece of fruit after your workout to have w/ your protein instead of the oats,
for breakfast have some egg whites and a yolk or 2 with your oats,
and id try to have lean steak or some nice salmon a few times a week for a meal instead of another chicken meal
if u add a few more good fats to your diet u wont be as hungry and it will be good for your recovery, ie olive oil and some vinegar as a dressing on ya veggies

SO, any snacking suggestions w/ that? or should i just suck it up and quit bitchin?
hey sam, i'm not trying to be an ass, but damn kid, you need WAY more food than that. i eat more than that on a regular basis, and i can assure you, you will loose some hard earned mass if thats all you eat. i would up the portions up a little bit more.
