not sure if this goes here, but help me out. so im in college and i like to drink...big surprise. well, i have been wondering how detrimental (other than the hangover) gin is to the daily grind, including diet and all that jazz. this may sound stupid to some of you, but im really curious about this. i mis gin with sodium free club soda, i dont drink to the point that im dragging ass the next day, and it only happens about one or two days a week. is this really really bad or what?

Yes it really is bad, and this thread will get shut down. There are numerous threads started here about alcohol, and the verdict it always the same...it will do NOTHING but HURT your progress and we are only about helping you here brother. Just give it up, except maybe special occassions a few times a year, and in moderation. It will do nothing but slow your progress.

before this thread gets shut down, i urge you all to look at this link....http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/14049.html.

i did a search specifically for gin and nothing came up, so, whats so bad about it, seriously? sure, its got no nutritional value, and 73 calories, but really, which one of us doesnt burn those calories in 15 minutes of bike riding (with heart rate at 160 and rpms at 140....yes, ive done my homework).

this is not a stupid post, i urge you all to look at it and at least explain why this is so negative.

mehancd, seriously, be realistic bro.
if you have any dedication and want to make any serious progress in the gym, you already know the answer to this question.
but, just for the sake of conversation:
http://www.ironmagazine.com/article273.html
http://www.thefactsaboutfitness.com/research/alcohol.htm
http://www.teenbodybuilding.com/bigalcohol.htm

that should about sum it up.
also, if you wanted a real answer to this question, it would've taken you about 2 mins and Google would've given you the answer.

great articles joe....

seriously mehancd, your question here is more of you wanting us to justify your drinking. Its just not going to happen on this site. If your serious about making solid gains and getting the most from your lifting, give up the alcohol. If your just in it for the chicks or some other reason, than do what you do. I'm not here to pass judgement on you bro, but its your decision not ours. Peace!

some people want to be a pro body builder and have every portion of the lifestyle required in perfect order.

some people are in it as more of a recreational thing. u can drink, but things like waking up the next day with less energy due to alcohol consumption or risking muscle growth are things you have to take in to consideration. its also obviously excess calories.

u need to figure out where you sit in.

A mate of mine just won the local World Natural Body Building comp and he drinks every once in a while.

take a look at footy players. alcohol and footy players goes hand in hand and some of them are in good shape but they will never be fantastically cut or built.

im not a scientist i dont know but what i can see is what others around me do and how it affects them.

This was in one of the above mentioned websites

"This year I refuse to make the same mistake. As bodybuilders we are always learning. One thing I've learned is that alcohol does effect your gains, and in a negative way. This year I will stay sober. I still plan on drinking, but I'll limit myself to a beer an hour, and no more than 3 or 4 a night. I suggest those of you in college who are serious about improving your physiques do the same. Maybe once a month I'll allow myself to get trashed."

"If you must drink alcohol, wine is an acceptable addition to levels beyond the Induction diet. If wine does not suit your taste, straight liquor such as scotch, rye, vodka, and gin would be appropriate, as long as the mixer is sugarless; this means no juice, tonic water; or non-diet soda. Seltzer and diet soda are appropriate."

remember that besides the obvious effects alcohol has upon our hormones and stuff, it is also pretty dense in calories, almost as fat is

1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories

Do what you want dude. keep it in moderation but enjoy life. I don"t think drinking is for me personally, but I see nothing wrong with a couple drinks every now and then. And if you want to drink, you shouldn't have to explain it to people on the internet. Whatever choice you make, do it for yourself.

I myself don't have a problem with wanting to drink alcohol, because i have and i found out its not all that it seems. However i am in high school and there are quite a few parties. A lot of my friends drink and do drugs and they want me to do the same. Yeah, it is fun to go out and get smashed and chase girls- if you're a normal person. If you want to be a bodybuilder and be serious about it, you have to eliminate all the shit that brings you down. Now i know no one is 100% perfect on their diet, but drinking alcohol will do nothing but bring down your progress. It starts out as a couple of drinks and then all weekend and then before you know it, you're drinking on week days and not even training. I think that if you wanna be a bodybuilder than you have to make sacrifices.

Might be worthwhile mentioning that alcohol (ethanol anyway) is .79 of the density of water so keep that in mind when calculating the number of calories!
