hey guys. i was hoping i could get some help on setting up my chains. it takes me way too long to set them up. So does anyone have any help and advice on setting up chains, such as when I should adjust the leader chain as opposed to adjusting the main chain itself? Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Matt Dickerson and Powerfreak, if you are stopping by, thanks. Bonus points if you leave a reply. You guys know your stuff and I appreciate all your advice.

Peace!

I assume you have a smaller leader chain? I run this through the center point of my chains. I always use 3 chains per side which is 60 pounds per side or 20 pounds per chain. All I have for now. If you run the leader chain through the center link of the large chains you won't have the problem of the chains slipping in the middle of your set and all you will have to adjust is the length of the leader according to the movement.

When you set up chains make sure that a little bit of them are touching the ground when at full extension. You never want the chains swinging around.

I have APT's chain set which comes with the smaller leader chains. I set my chains up like this: 1. Chain collars around the bar with a small carabiner hanging 2. the end link of the leader chain clipped through the small carabiner 3. the leader chain then looped through the 2nd larger carabiner and another link of the leader chain clipped through the 1st carabiner at the top. 4. the 1st link of the main chain is clipped through the 2nd larger carabiner and the other end is then secured to the carabiner as well.

hopes that makes sense.

Now I'm 99% sure I have the actual set up right, but I have a hard time figuring out which links I should adjust to have the correct length of the whole chain set (adjusting the links of the leader chain vs. adjusting the links of the main chain) so that it hangs correctly off the bar and onto the floor (how long the leader chain should be, making the main chain just long enough so it rests at the bottom, etc. whatever).

Thanks!!

Just my 2 cents. Dont know if this is valuable information.

I just use a carabiner hook to clip the chains on quickly. Before adding on i check with shackle to hook through, so i have enough chain on the ground and enough coming up. After that its just putting through the carabiner hook and clipping them on.

Hell Everyone. I just bought some "Truckers" Chain from Harbor Freight, around $35 for Forty Pounds. (2 Chains, Each 3/8-14Ft) Took off one Hook, and Overlap 3 Times together, then Hooking them together with the single hook I left. Damn Cheaper, and easier then anything else your going to buy. Takes around 15 Seconds to Completely do and Hook them to the bar, Perfect Height for Flat Benchpressing, or Any pressing in general. I bought them a few Dollars on sale, but there still $19.99 per chain, which is Extremely Cheap.

Just Considering the Price I feel alot pay for Decent Chains, is Outrageous. (Especially Weight Lifting Specific Chain Sets.) Home Depot, Sold Chain Also, but it was Nearly $3 a Foot and there Truckers Chain (3/8-20) was $40(for a Single). Long Story Short, check out a few diffrent places before you end up buying large amounts of chain. Can save you alot of extra cash, maybe enough to build that two and three board setup you always wanted.

I've been looking around. I've found 1/4" and 5/16" chains. But those are only the lightest chains to use. I've looked at Home Depot, Lowes, and Tractor Supply company, but I cannot find 1/2" or 3/4" chains, which would be the heavy ones. I might have to drop the money on those if I cannot find those at a hardware store.

The price of raw steel is going thru the roof, heading in to un-charted waters...Take what you can get now, cause the shit is going to hit the fan..Very soon these "expensive" prices we see now are going to be a great deal...

I know it's expensive and all but compared to other sites it was the cheapest I could find, 10 ft of 1/2" for $66 ain't too bad imo.

The best pricing on chain: Home Depot or Lowe's. Yes, you have to purchase more chain because of the gauge, but you don't have to pay the shipping nor the surcharge for "heavy duty". Instead of getting just 6', get 12' and loop it together. As you progress, add chain to the sides to hang from your original length. Believe me, you save a ton of money.

Actually, Harbor Freight was much Cheaper. I went to Lowes and Home Depot, for spot pricing. They did have a bundle for $36 (3/8-20ft) but if you went the Single Way It was close to $2.50-$3.00 per foot for 3/8in. Chain. At harbor freight I could have bought the Bucket (3/8-20ft) for $16.99 but instead opted with my (3/8-14ft) for $19.99 because they were sold out of the "Buckets".
