Good workout... I hit some big PR's on DB curls and CGBP... I've never done 3 plates for more than 3 reps before... I suprised myself by knocking out 6. Machine concentration curls and OH DB Ext's went well... I lifted at 24 hr fitness so the heaviest DB I could use was the 120. Did some high rep dips/chins to finish the workout off... legs next.

Great workout. Went to a different gym today and trained with Jeff aka 'bigmac366'... it was nice having a workout partner for that extra motivation. I didn't focus on squats today since I don't feel like my lower back is 100% yet, but hitting a warmup set of 315x10 without any problems made me feel a little better about it. I was also able to go heavy on leg presses without any issues. This gym was alot more hardcore/old school than 24 hr fitness or even the Gold's I'm used to lifting at... there was a crapload of awesome equipment and all the weights are real iron instead of the plastic coated stuff. Alot of the equipment I'd never seen before... one example of this is 'The Destroyer' which I named for its ability to destroy your ability to walk without even loading any weight on it. Here's what it looks like... http://www.gymgurufitness.com/catalog/FW-8800.jpg I was messing around with it when we first got there and barely got 8 reps with 1 plate on each side, lol... I had my feet positioned at the same spot as the guy in the picture., and it feels really smooth and lets you get a full ROM, nailing both quads and hammies. 3 sets of 20 on those supersetted with walking lunges had my teardrops burning like crazy. Calf raises, leg curls, and leg extensions finished me off.

Haha, it was. It was kinda funny going from 26 plates on the leg press to just using the sled... maybe I should've named it 'The Humbler'...

I hurt my lower back about two weeks ago doing deadlifts... I thought it was pretty serious at first, but after getting x-rays it ended up just being a pulled muscle. I took a few days off to recover right when it happened, and its progressively felt better every day since. How did you hurt your back?

Awesome I would have loved to work for the fire department for a little while before starting nursing school, but I didn't quite have my ducks in a row at the time.

So the KC ABC is getting personal training sessions for free! I still use that "isolateral bent-arm D-handle lat pulldown" quite often...it's a great movement.

Haha, nobody works for the fire department for a little while... thats what makes it so hard to get hired. The only way people leave is if they retire after +20 yrs or die. The last interview process I went through over 400 people applied... the department only hired 2. Its very competitive.

Cool man... glad you like them. They've really improved my lats.

Outstanding workout boss. Seems you really killed your back and I am glad your lower back is feeling better. The way I hurt mine was I did 15 reps of 135 for squat. It is real easy and just doing a warm up. The next set I put on 225 and I was planning on doing it for like 12. I got it off the hooks and took one step back and then pow my lower right back went berserk. So I put it back up and that was it for me. It hurt like hell. My lower back wasn't right for about 2 weeks. Now it is pretty much back to normal. I haven't done squats in over a month and I am a littler nervous to do it. I really don't want to go through that again. Anyways, any suggestions would be cool or any ideas. Keep up the damn good work.

I ask this question often to athletes that I guess most inspire me and Im sure you have been asked this a lot, being legs for many people are so hard to develop and get to grow..as I am one that struggles with this and its a bit frustrating, especially at this stage of the game for me.

Im my opinion, you have one of the best sets of quads I ever seen on a guy..seriously. Where legs one of those muscle groups for you that just seemed to grow fast? Like with me, its def upper body and I dont know why cause I didnt plan on getting into the shape Im in now..it just kinda happened. If im not careful how I train my upper, it will continue to grow. I train my legs just as hard...even harder now and I have tried just about any wo you can think of, goin as heavy as I can go or that which my back allows me to go, (as I do have a pre-existing back issue that creeps on me out of the blue, but so far so good). I guess Im just confused as to why my legs are so damn stubborn? I mean just now Im finally seeing changes taking place and maybe cause Im old and muscle maturity is kicking in, its playing a part in why I see a difference. Its frustrating as hell for me cause I see so many athletes on stage with incredible legs and I know Im doin the same shit they are doin..so why are mine so friggin difficult?

Im into a basic PL'ing routine now for legs which I incorporate into my BB'ing training. This is the only way of training I have not tried...so Im giving it a go now. I really dont know what else to do and I want to be back on stage, but not till my legs are where they need to be in comparison to my upper body.

thoughts??

Well, heres a question. What happened to your shoulder, and how do you go around it?

I hurt it the way everyone hurts their shoulders... by maxing out on flat bb bench press. I work around it by avoiding exercises that aggrevate it. This means that you won't see flat bb/db presses, bb/db shoulder presses, and a few others included in my workouts. Interestingly enough, I can still do weighted dips, bb CGBP, and incline presses without any problems.

Ouch... I feel your pain. It sounds like you just didn't warm up enough though... spend a few minutes stretching it beforehand and I bet it would make a big difference. If you're still not feeling ready for squats you can get a decent leg workout in by using machines like leg press, hack squats, etc and doing a crapload of high rep sets.

I really dont know what else to do and I want to be back on stage, but not till my legs are where they need to be in comparison to my upper body.

thoughts??

Honestly I wouldn't have recommended a PL'ing routine but since you've tried everything else, it may be just what you need. Thats what makes the iron game so interesting to me... different things work differently for different people. I'll drop into your journey and check out your leg workouts... maybe I'll be able to suggest something you haven't thought of.

Glad to see you got this journey going. I'm definately going to be checkin in on this one.

I did some quick browsing... have you ever done legs more than once a week? I've found that mine respond best when I hit them every 4-5 days.

I have a while back, where I had split up hams and quads though. I even went so far as doin a 4 week split of just legs...I would go quads, rest, hams, rest, quads, rest and so on. Of course my rest days I trained upper body. LOL..glutton for pain here in case you hadnt noticed yet. LOL

Hitting them every 4 days I try to emphasize either quads or hams, so there's nothing wrong with that IMO... although every other day would be pretty intense!

Off day today...

I've gotten a few messages about my nutrition, so I figured I would post it up here for everyone to see.

My diet principles are fairly simple... my first 3-4 meals of each day are high carb/high protien, and my last 2-3 meals are moderate fat/high protein. A normal days worth of food usually looks like this...

Meal #1 - 1 serving Real Gains + 12 oz milk + 2 scoops natty pb
Meal #2 (pre-WO) - Natty PBJ sandwich + 12 oz milk
Meal #3 (PWO) - 1 serving Torrent
Meal #4 - 12 oz milk + Chicken/Rice or Steak/Potatoes... something along those lines. This is the only meal I ever change from day to day.
Meal #5 - 1/2lb turkey sausage or 4 eggs + 12 oz milk
Meal #6 - 1 scoop Milk/Egg protein + 12 oz milk + 2 scoops natty PB
Meal #7 - 1 scoop Mlik/Egg protein + 12 oz milk + 2 scoops natty PB

Depending on the timing of my meals throughout the day, sometimes I only eat 6 times... when I eat 7 I just repeat meal #6.

I've always eaten like this, and Mlik and natty PB are my two favorite foods... I've actually thought of trying a diet of nothing but those two, lol... plus maybe a scoop of protein powder here and there.

Turkey sausage is good stuff... very lean and its got a great flavor. Here's the natty PB I eat... www.naturallymore.com I go through 3-4 jars of it a week... check out the stats...

Good workout... hit legs with Maharg, Excessive Endorphins, and Gehlbach... we were all walking funny by the end. My lower back is starting to feel alot better. Its always sore when I wake up but as long as I stretch alot it doesn't bother me. 4 plates on squats felt fine, but I didn't want to push it once it started to get hard... same thing on the 3 plate set. The powertec squat machine was fun... also did some light SLDLs and high rep leg ext's/curls. We finished off the workout by taking a bar outside and doing parking lot lunges... the owner thought we were crazy. No calf work because the standing calf raise machine was busted.

your one strong mother Hola, setting awe inspiring numbers for many people including myself to hit one of these days. Great job

Thanks for the kind words.

HAHA!.... Hell yeah buddy! I can't do BB lunges at the gym due to space so I'm ready.... I was thinking we could always just push one of the vehicles about 50 feet or so.... That'll finish up the ole' legs nice and proper!

And seriously.... your dipping is ridiculous.... I'm just sayin. ;)

lol... vehicle pushes huh? That would be pretty hardcore... we just might have to try it!

I just wanna play with a plate loaded dip machine, such a cool toy lol. I would rather push a car, than do BB lunges, so I game for that J. And Hola, you are a straight up Freak. -T.

P.S. I wanna be like Hola when I grow up lol.

You'll get a week pass to Golds on friday, so you can lift there next week as well if you want to... your dip machine dreams can become a reality!

Congrats on the PRs and diz-amn 315 for CGBP is amazing work brother... Great work on the legs as well...

We gotta get a lifting session together soon when your on the east coast next time!

*Every since I read about you and the PB I was like thats it I'm getting me a tub... got some and have been hooked again since... haha it took me forever to kick it last time now I'm sold... and with the milk... its over!

For sure man... I'll definately let you know if I'm out that way... and the same goes for you if you're ever in the midwest!

lol yeah... that PB is good stuff!

Good workout... not a ton of sets but my back was tore up afterwards, and sore all weekend, so I must've done something right. My strength was good on the rows and pulldowns, and I kept the reps high on shrugs to take some of the stress off my lower back.

4. Parking Lot Minivan Pushes

Kickass workout... I decided to try 2 plates for as many reps as I could get on squats. I originally thought I'd try for 75 but 50 was pretty intense... I had to lay down for a few minutes afterwards. The squat machine and light sldl combo went well, and I finished off my legs with a circuit of lying leg curls, leg extensions, and super high rep calf raises. Man were those killer... its been 2 days and my calves are by far the most sore muscle on my body! Pushing the minivan in the parking lot afterwards might've had something to do with it though...

Hola,
Got a question or your opinion really. Today I was going to do deadlifts, but my lower back has been stiff all day long. So I decided to skip them and just beat the hell out of my back with cable rows. I feel I have cheated myself on not doing deadlifts, but I don't want to take the chance of hurting my back again. Just wondering if I made the right choice. Anyways, your workouts are looking sick as always. Keep up the good!

I definately think you made the right decision... I wish I would've done the same and listened to my body a few weeks ago... it would've saved me alot of pain.

Got one more question. How in the hell did you last a year in the desert. I have been here for 6 months and it is getting on my nervers. Thank god I am in the Air Force and only get deployed for 6 months. Well I am not like the regular AF that only goes for 4 months, but how did you get through all of the bs here?

I actually liked it over there... I did convoy security, so I saw my fair share of IED's, sniper attacks, etc. plus the usual rocket attacks on base. My room actually got hit by a rocket about 30 seconds after I walked outside. Regardless of the close calls, I have alot of great memories of that place. I actually started my bb'ing career (if you can call it that, lol) halfway through my tour. As far as the BS is concerned, I don't think I had to deal with most of the stuff you do... when I was there weren't alot of rules... we didn't have to wear full battle gear inside the bases. Even when we did we didn't use the shoulder, neck, or crotch peices. I've heard they're mandatory now. What other BS do you have to deal with? Our mission rules were pretty simple too... do what you have to in order to get the job done... anything went out on the road. I rammed/side swiped more iraqi vehicles than I can count... never got in trouble for it. We used to throw old D batteries through the windshields of cars that got too close to our convoys... thats probably not allowed anymore, either, lol... I was there during some of the bloodiest months of our occupation but it was probably the most fun time to be there too.

Good workout... went up to 5 plates and a 25 on chest supported t-bars, and damn was it heavy... it was hard to breathe. Everything else went pretty well... I kept the reps high, partly because I like high reps, and partly because I was using either the whole stack or the heaviest DBs, lol... Off day tomorrow, then chest/shoulders on saturday.

Damn dude...I haven't done chest-supported T-bar rows for a while, those are a bitch (but hell they work) and yeah you really have to go a little lighter than you normally would on barbell T-bars. That's some good reps and weight too.

Lovin the DB shrugs ....very jealous that you have anything over 120s too b/c we don't. I would die to have 150s! A nice recovery day too on Friday to get you ready for the weekend. Keep us posted.

I hadn't done them in a long time either... just decided to one day for the hell of it instead of normal t-bar rows, and they absolutely destroyed my back... it was awesome. The only drawbacks are that you can't use as much weight, and it becomes difficult to breathe with heavy weight, but it makes you keep better form, which in turn hits the back better IMO... thats a trade-off I'll take.

It is nice to have them, although I don't use the 150's for much anymore since I stopped DB pressing. I can't wait for the weekend... I'm going to enjoy my day off tomorrow too!

Amazing workout Hola! Nice volume and some huge ass numbers.

As for the BS here. Well where I am at we don't have to wear our gear inside the base unless of course we get hit. There are just decisions that are made and you wonder why it was made in that way or what was the reasoning behind it. Im glad to see that you made it out of doing convoy security. That is some serious stuff right there. I have some good friends of mine that do it and it gets hectic at times. Anyways, awesome workout Hola!

Great workout... strength and endurance were both way up. My shoulder joints felt fine, except for the heaviest sets of HS and Smith Inclines... whenever I struggle on the last rep it tends to hurt a little bit. Nothing major, but they might be a tad bit sore tomorrow, along with the rest of my upper body, lol... should make my leg workout even more fun than usual!

Occasionally I'll do a machine shoulder press, or standing BTN bb shoulder press, but I keep them both light and use high reps. I think most people forget that delts get hit anytime you do a press or row. All the heavy compound pressing movements utilitize your front/side delts to one degree or another. Rear delts get hit during any row/pulldown exercise. I've found that a couple sets of side laterals at the end of my chest workout and a couple sets of rear delt raises at the end of my back workout have been more than enough to keep my shoulders from lagging behind the rest of my physique. In fact, I think my delts are one of my better bodyparts.

Thanks man.

If you have shoulder problems I see no problem with skipping presses... I would leave out the upright rows as well though... those are very hard on your shoulder joints IMO. If you don't have prior shoulder issues I wouldn't drop the shoulder presses, but you could still combine chest/shoulders into one workout, and alternate each time which press you focus on. For example, first workout you focus on chest, so start with heavy db incline, and hit some high rep bb shoulder press towards the end. Next workout hit heavy db shoulder press, and hit some high rep bb incline towards the end after weighted dips. You get the best of both worlds that way, and thats actually the way I originally designed my 12 day rotation to work. I only changed it to make both chest/shoulder days the same because of my shoulder problems.

Haha... I know, I know... I'll get on a stage sooner or later!

I'm right there with you! I LOVE that cybex leg press... if it wasn't so damn expensive I'd buy one for my basement, lol... Like you said, its very easy on the knees, and its a very natural feeling ROM... you can't beat it.

Great workout... heres the scenario: My wife and I just bought a house, so I spent 12 hrs there working outside in the sun doing everything from mowing the lawn, weed-eating, pruning trees, caulking cracks, fixing the fence, putting together our new grill, etc... the list goes on. I got alot done, but I also got a sunburn from hell, and my diet was pretty crappy... I had 3 weight gainer shakes, 3 pieces of pizza, 2 McChickens and a Fruit/Yogurt Parfait (mmmm!) plus 3 bananas, a few glasses of Apple Juice, about 1.5 gallons of water (I was thirsty!) a couple scoops of protein powder and my usual 3/4 gallon of milk. I was supposed to workout around noon, but that didn't happen... 9pm rolls around and I'm thinking "shit... I have no energy and this workout is gonna suck..." I go home and take my preWO supps, substituting a sample pack of Labrada Super Charge instead of my usual stuff for the extra energy benefits and made it to the gym by 10pm. My lower back isn't feeling 100% after all the crap I did so I decide to try a high rep 'pump & burn' type workout. I didn't think it would be that hard, but boy was I wrong. I took my normal rest times on my squat warmups, ~1-2 minutes, and after that it was balls to the wall, as fast as possible. Doing leg press right after the squat machine was pretty tough, so I gave myself a few extra seconds there by changing plates and taking a quick water break... maybe 60 seconds tops. All the other sets were done with almost no rest between them... only as much time as it took me to walk to the next machine and get set up. It was alot of fun though... and the next time someone asks me why I don't do cardio I'm going to link them to this workout... I was out of breath and drenched in sweat the entire time. Good stuff... tomorrow is Arms/Abs.

Nice! That squat machine looks pretty cool. It sounds like your training is going well, keep it up man.

Yeah bro 150 is a load.....slow and steady is good....even if you hit it a couple months down the road I know u got it. .....I think I'm loving E-Z bar curls moreso than barbell curls now, a little easier on the forearms. Keep doin what you're doin Hola.

I'm the same way... I've never liked straight bar curls. EZ bars feel alot more comfortable. I've only been focusing on them for a few months, but I think they've made a big difference in my biceps already.

I buy it at wal-mart... not 100% of the fat/protein content, but I get the 93/7 which is pretty lean. If its too bland, try putting different seasonings in it... thats what I do.

Great workout... it started off like shit though. This past weekend, during my 12 hr yardwork-a-thon, I somehow managed to cover myself in Poison Ivy, which has steadily gotten worse this past week. I was finally talked into going into the ER at the local VA hospital yesterday (free healthcare rules BTW) and getting a steroidal anti-inflammatory shot. It was right before I was planning on hitting the gym, and of course there was no way I was skipping a workout, trip to the ER or not. There were two things that kinda sucked though... first off, this shot makes you extremely drowsy, so the first half of the workout I was trying not to fall asleep. They almost made me stay at the hospital until I could get someone to come pick me up, since I drove myself there. Second, I felt like I'd been kicked by a horse in my side delt... it hurt like hell almost the entire workout... it finally started to feel better towards the end. Regardless of all that, I still managed to get a pretty good workout in... it was very fast-paced and I stuck with high reps for the most part, but all-in-all I was happy with it. It was the first time I'd tried 1 arm db laterals... they seemed to hit my rear delts more than I thought they would, but I liked them. I think I'll keep them around.
