I started a new training cycle shooting for an RPS meet in May - The Jersey Rumble

This training cycle will be based on 5/3/1 with adjustments. I've had very good success with 5/3/1 & The Cube style training but I also add in things I've picked up from other methods like Westside.

1/1/16 New year's day (just like a resolutioner) - Benchapalooza at Powerhouse Gym Staten Island

Bench:

195 x 5 reps

225 x 5 reps

255 x 5 reps

In between sets I did Spider bench supported rows 5 sets x 8 reps

Hammer strength tricep extensions:

4 sets x 8-12 reps

Lying dumbell rollovers:

4 x sets x 8-10 reps

Cable tricep extensions:

4 x 10-15 reps

Rotator cuff work

1/2/16 Squats - Powerhouse Gym Staten Island

Squats:

275 x 5

320 x 5

355 x 4

SSB bar pause squats:

245 x 3 pause reps x 3 sets

Standing leg curls:

4 sets x 8 reps

Ab/Adductor machine:

3 x 15 reps for each

My training schedule will look like this:

Sunday - Squats
Monday - delts/bi's (bodybuilding day)
Tuesday - conditioning (martial arts)
Wednesday - Deads
Thursday - conditioning (martial arts)
Friday - Benchapalooza
Saturday - conditioning

I'll work in upper back probably with bench but I may give it it's own day possibly Thursdays

A big goal I have by the end of this cycle is to hit 500 squat with no wraps.

I am undecided right now if I'll use wraps at the next meet but I am leaning towards not.

last week - 285 x 3 on top set followed by 3 breakdown sets of -15lb on each one

Squat - 2 more weeks of doubles
last week - 495 x 2 on top set followed by 3 breakdown sets of -20lb on each one

I'm on the same page. I have a goal to hit in just sleeves, obviously being a lighter number than if I wrapped. I'd rather not deal with the stress of wrapping, just sleeve up and squat. But damn I want more weight on the bar and k need wraps for it. I should just have my wife hide my wraps so the option isn't even there.

My last squat day will be this Saturday (1 week out). I'll go up to 515 x 2 and end it there. Then a full week of recovery (plus some light foam rolling and possibly a very light bench day).

I may need a wrap on Saturday but not 100% sure! Will you be there during the PM session on Sat?


How much time between sets?

I'd say about 5-10 min when I get to the heavier sets. I've been trying to wait a bit longer since there's 10-15 min in between attempts at a meet.

You have to grip the crap out of it to hold onto the bar; therefore, you REALLY activate all of your back muscles when Pulling. Soreness definitely follows =)

Gotta step up our posting game in here NG.

We're both currently a little less than 6 weeks out from the RPS Jersey Rumble in Newark NJ (May 21/22).

Currently at 3 reps in my training cycle and stepping the weight up each week. This plan calls for weight to increase for 12 weeks while volume slowly decreases the closer you get to the meet.

Currently at these numbers on the main lifts.
Squats:
485 x 3

Bench:
285 x 2 (missed 3rd rep last week so it'll be 285 x 3 this week again)

Deadlifts:
535 x 3

One of the keys is finding ways to better recover in between lifts so I do a lot more foam rolling, stretching, and am now cutting out any extra heavy sessions for other body parts. My goal is to maximize my lifts for the meet and I'm trying to be as smart as possible about it. Learning a lot this time around!

At the moment, I've been going pretty light. I got hit with the flu last week and I'm just getting over it.

It has been a busy last 2-3 weeks with baseball and soccer playoffs but I'm enjoying the mental break from the gym.

Yeah, and that is what you're suppose to do; train hard/heavy for a meet. Focus top notch, compete, crush it, then relax. I never understood the guys who went through a meet prep, competed, and then were in the gym the next day, lifting heavy again. Good work on the meet. Enjoy the break and have a good time.

Yo buddy. Good to see you at Atilis. I have to remember to save 'fluff and buff' workouts for ABCs. Doing my deadlift workout at a random gym, at a random time, with randoms .. it just doesn't bode well. I'll join in on the G Diesel, C.Coronato, N. Lepore arm workout program next time.

A very interesting idea! Right now, we're still waiting for some of the raw materials to arrive so that we can push it through production. But then you have QC testing - micro and full panel - to ensure everything is good to go!

It's been way too long since I've posted here.

Bench - my rotator cuff is still messed up so I am starting to incorporate more shoulder/rotator cuff rehab stuff into my program. I may have to take some time off and let if finally heal. I plan to focus more on bamboo bar benching.
I can't even bench 135 without feeling pain in my right shoulder. I've been sticking with 225 for reps but I think that is making the issue worse.

Deadlift - these are feeling good (other than my shoulder issue - which affects the lift b/c you need healthy shoulders to consistently hold and pull the weight)
Hit 495 x 5 recently so it's decent weight for meet prep (not that I'll be competing yet).

Squats - just added knee sleeves back into the mix and they are starting to feel really good.
Sets of 385 x 6 were no problem.

Dusty - it's coming along slowly so I really need to prioritize exercises that will help my rotator cuff get stronger. My bench is already pretty bad so this isn't helping, lol! And thanks for the support as always - working to get stronger for 2017!
