Seems like alot of people in this section are all into MMA and stuff. Anyone still do sport karate? Not necessarily practical self defense, but can showcase some good skills. Being said, figured I'd throw a few drills out to build stronger legs for kicking, balance and technique.

SIDE KICKS: A big thing that helps is how far you pivot your standing foot. Turn that heel ALL the way towards your opponent, chamber your leg as high as you can. Point your butt at them and extend kick blasting with the heel. The full pivot gives you a bit more stability incase they rush in at you. Some good drills are to use a wall for balance, try blasting out 10-20 without putting your foot down at a real slow pace. Pause with the leg in the full extension. Alternate heights, go high, low, high, middle. Then take your hand off the wall and practice hopping down the hall throwing a kick on each hop.

Anybody else?

I got all the way up to blue belt in shodokhan(spelling?) karate. When I would side kick or round house I could literally pivot my foot at a 180 degree kicking through the bag or oppopnent. but then as i progressed into MMA i fell toward more mui thai and judo. The other drills I would do isnt really anything special. But I would alternate side kicks left to right fast one after the other for about 20-30 for each set so to speak. then would throw angle weights on and do side kicks as well.

not to put the style down or anything but a thai fighter will destroy anyone in karate. thai fighters have the strongest kicks in all styles and its all about the form of the kick itself. in most styles, as they kick and strike, they retract the leg. in muay thai, they are trained to kick "through", they use the shin and turn the hips in a snapping motion to fully get all the power of the body into it. and let me tell ya....if you dont train your legs (get kicked all the time) and your in a fight, your legs will give out.

totally agree. if the descipline was strickly mui thai and strickly karate. but just like Kit Copes' first fight i believe in UFC or WEC i cant remember. He was doing good in the first part with the stand up but he really didnt work on his ground game. and it ended up with the ref stopping it due to ground and pound cuz cope didnt know how to defend that. So if thai is going up another descipline with no other variable i think thai would dominate. but like i stated in my pervious post I personally kick through the oponent with using my hips and pivot foot as leverage. and yes if you dont condition ur legs for that ur gonna hurt. but karate isnt my only discipline. I also study kickboxing which does put a little more emphasis on the kicks then karate does. that was just a discpline i think all kids start off in when there parents dont know much about the arts.
