Random thought for the day...
Had a great weekend of training but banged up my lower back... Damn. This shit happens at least once a year. A strictly muscular lumbar tweak that has me walking around, hobbled over with my ass sticking out like J-Lo with osteoperosis. Spent yesterday on the couch watching football, immobile, eating pizza. The bitch of the bunch is that when I lay down or sit for a prolonged period it gets tight, but it won't heal up if I'm moving too much.
Shit... I can hear the voice in my head, "Walk it off pretty boy and get back in the game."
Peace, G

Exactly... Even though my squad's season was over before the season started. So who will the silver and black take with the first pick? Brady Quinn or JaMarcus Russell? As long as they take a quarterback, I'll be happy. Peace, G

Damn G, hate when that happens... I think you were a witness to the last time I managed to f up my lower back. These next couple of weeks when training be sure to keep your lower back warm during the workouts. Get blood into that area and that'll really speed up the healing time.

Hey G,
Hope your back feels better. Without a doubt the Raiders should pick JaMarcus Russell. He picked apart the ND defense in the second half. He's proved it's time for him to move to the next level. As the number one pick would be a great place to start.

No doubt bro... Training through injuries is all part of the game. Woke up this morning feeling much better. The only thing that makes it tight is sitting for prolonged periods. With any luck, I'll get all of my training in this week. Peace, G

I find a lot of brilliant philosophy in hip-hop, but just like everything else you have to be able to clear away the bullshit and read between the lines. This lyric is from underground MC Aesop Rock and it is a great take on people's outlook on life...
"Life's not a bitch, she's a beautiful woman. You only call her a bitch, cuz you couldn't get that pussy."
Peace, G
I have had that same issue with my back for months..I am actually getting an MRI next week. I still train but was not able to do heavy squats or deads for a while.
The doc would try and prescribe all this crap for pain but I never took it..I still trained regardless of the pain that would shoot up and down my leg.
Now...3 months later..I am almost better..still getting the MRI 'cause I can feel the pain lingering in the background, just waiting for an opportunity to present itself full blast again. I am afraid to sneeze without bracing myself first.
Rest is best, but I am a stubborn ass...I am a firm believer of working through it..but that sure wears you down at the end of the day....wears and tears of bodybuilding. Stay strong...you can get through anything!

G Diesel;
Sorry to hear about your back. How did you injure it, what exercise? It is the body's way of telling you to rest a bit...In Physical therapy we would treat you the following...Ice and Advil for pain and inflammation relief...immediately/soon as you notice(d) the pain. START YOUR DAY WITH HEAT...Heat it up with either Mineral Ice or a damp towel tossed in the microwave for a minute, wrap another towel around the warmed towel to prevent burning...Got to stretch it out, try the treadmill in a few days, just walk..kind of like it tractions your back out. While (if you can) lying on the floor, do the "both hands wrapped around knees and pull to chest stretch" work up to a 30 second hold. And do some very easy-limited range of motion ab crunches on a physio ball..will also strengthen and improve blood flow in that area. Yes you are 100% right when dormant it will tighten up, so heat first thing, move around slowly, work up to the treadmill, stretches and ab work. I KNOW YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR THIS, BUT WHEN IT DOES FEEL BETTER, TRY SOME MACHINE- LIGHT WEIGHT TRAINING...Avoid any pressing over head and squats for a few weeks, we need to keep the compression
off the disks.
You will be back to brand new again in a very short time.
Let me know if you need any more help!
And pizza, as long as you throw down a protein shake with it, it's all good!

Some thought provoking quotes for the day...
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
"Ten thousand fools proclaim themselves into obscurity, while one wise man forgets himself into immortality."
"I submit to you that if a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live."
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

Ya know G, I hope we pick up a quarterback too. In my opinion, I don't think Brady Quinn is gonna get it done in the NFL. I am hoping for Troy Smith or that Brian Brohm from Louisville changes his mind and goes pro. That kid was phenomenal this year. Do you think it is time we got rid of Randy Moss? The euphoria of having him around has worn off I think.

I think Randy could be the man agin if he had someone to throw to him, like say, JaMarcus Russell of LSU. Personally I felt much better about Quinn before the LSU Game and I have doubts about Troy Smith in the NFL. Peace, G

Quinn definitely didnt step up to the challenge that LSU gave them. But then again, how the #11 team plays the #4 is beyond me. Im an Irish fan since birth, i bleed blue and gold, but they were thrown to the dogs with kibbles and bits hung around their neck with that game, i think. Ill be the first to admit that. Other teams deserved that bowl game ahead of the Irish. But, i think Quinn will do well in the NFL, he's been running a pro set offense for the past two years. he'll be fine as will JaMarcus Russell, its hard to stop someone that big. Troy Smith tho, he's too small, he'll end up like a Cordell Stewart when he was at Pitt, he'll be a "slash".. .maybe they'll make a cornerback or receiver outta him.

SHIT man ! You have summed up a lot about I think every harcore Animal's life out there..
If only I had this shit to say to someone in my head ready to give someone an earful when they ask why I do this to myself day in and day out. Recently I have been getting poked and harassed by coaches and peers to play lacrosse my senior year, yet I have found a passion I care too much about, this animal way of life. Althouh I did like lacrosse in the past, I was never particularly good at it and I wondered why I was playing a sport I never really had a passion for. The only reason I'm thinking of playing is because its senior year and last time to play on a organized sport.. The past year I have found my passion I intend to take hold of every possible minute of it, everyone tells me "bro you have your whole life to lift!!! just play lacrosse.. blah blah blah." They don't see what I see though, fleeting moments of opportunity to get what I want out of life. People look at my lifting and see improvements but they are not so great to strike awe and inspiration in the hearts of my friends. They don't see my struggle and the glory I see in what I do.
All I want to do is what I wanna do, and do what I have a passion for.. lifting. So my question for you G is, am I in the right? Although I think I already know the answer to my question, I need to hear it from someone articulate as yourself
Once again, hit the nail on the head G. None of my friends are awake to see the sun rise. I have already eaten, trained, and ate again before they are awake. When I don't go to the bar at night, and go home and pass out at 10:30, they used to give me shit. Now, I think it has been understood that the reason they stopped the ridiculing is because they don't have the nutsack to undertake the challenges and abuse I put myself through every day. They stay out till 3 am every night, drinking, chasing ass, and fucking around...now, I'm not saying I don't have each and every one of their backs, and I know they have mine, but its amazing how some people can let days slip into nights and back into days, without having done anything truly beneficial to their body or being in any way. This shit is carved into my very being, etched to my soul...
"What We Do In Life, Echoes in Eternity."
That's the quote engraved on my best friend's headstone at his grave...he was killed in Iraq at 19 years old. That mother fucker was one of the only dudes to really feel the same way. Now I carry his hopes, dreams, and goals on my shoulders, and if even if I don't want to get up at 5 am, I can't stay in bed, because he would have beaten me to the gym if he was still alive.

read through some of my animalpak manual. a practical bible for hardcore lifters. i looked at the "from the trench" articles. and that picture of machine is exactly what i imagine. alone, shredded, paper thin skin, every body part pumped up and looking as if it could explode, every vein thick as rope, shit i know many people don't want it ( and hell they wont be able to get it ) but they aint on this site.
im putting my ass on the line until i reach that level then im going to kick my ass to get even better, the journey will take years BRING IT.

Peace, G
I had that shit before..
Was doing 185 on the standing calf machine.
On my 3rd set while doing the 9th reps, something snap and its my lower back, I thought it was nothing until the next morning.
I was paralyze for a few days and yes, the bitch of the bunch is that whenever I want to move or change my sitting position after a prolonged period, I felt like I was 1,867 years old. My back hurts like FUCK.

Sometimes, to keep progressing, you have to go out of your way to humble yourself.
you cant get any more real than that...and any truer. we have a new lady in my office....i was moving some cabinets today and she started commenting on how strong i was and defined.. the instant response to that statement was, "thanks, but im not that big....not yet"
you have to remain humble...if you let your ego write checks your ass cant cash..you will definitely run in to trouble and sign yourself on for something that you cant handle.
always remain humble in this life brothers
strength and honor.

When I was about 10 i had a dream, a vision of a guy who had to be about 220 and jacked out of his mind. He went around helping anyone who needed it and saving lives. A modern day Hero Hulk, if you will. When I woke up I realized I had been dreaming about what I wanted to be. I became a firefighter, now I'm working on the second part.. That was my influence in my life I think, spiderman or superman never did it for me.

#97 is another great one. People tend to overlook the fact that bodybuilders feel things, like they're some aliens from another planet. We DO attach meaning to things. Hey G, I made a thread about this but I want to make sure and get a good answer before it fades into the void. I'll just paste my post.
I heard lately that Alpha Lipoic Acid helps creatine work better since it is an insulin-mimicker. I ask this in particular because it was suggested as an alternative to using dextrose with creatine if you don't want the extra sugar. Is this true?

I like ALA a lot because of its antioxidant properties. I know it is added to many creatine formulas as an insulin potentiator. In the absence of simple carbs, I think ALA is certainly better than nothing at all for boosting insulin but probably not as potent as sugars. Peace, G

Hey G,
You definitely have a way with words. A gift given to you that you have chosen to share with all of us. You give me that swift kick in the ass I need to get through a few road blocks hindering my progress. I gotta thank you for that. It's awesome to see how one persons way of thinking can greatly affect those who listen or read of those ways. For me as well as many others you have allowed us to see how you live and think, to a degree, and there are times we can definitely relate. That's what keeps me coming back to this forvm. We can all relate to one another and we're here to help each other out. Your last post in Diary of a Madman hit home for me and as I just mentioned I can totally relate. Thanks for your incites, it makes me want to be a better person. Always self improving!

Exactly... Even though my squad's season was over before the season started. So who will the silver and black take with the first pick? Brady Quinn or JaMarcus Russell? As long as they take a quarterback, I'll be happy. Peace, G
I would go with Russell! The guy is an ANIMAL!!!! Not this type of animal but you know what I'm saying. The man will help you win right away, Quinn is a bit on the "still growning" side.
today was a awesome " come back day" for me...been sick past few days and my ma decided until im better i cant hit the commercial gym "my real home" so tuesday rolls around and im finally feeling better. had played some really good squash at school and i had perhaps cleared my sinuses etc...
i asked straight up if i could go, ill take my animal pak as well! i said...yes! i was allowed...awesome.
1 hour :20+ minutes later im enthusiastic, full of energy and back to my old self.
shit loved today.
worked from Arms to back to legs.
preacher curls barbell.
preacher machine ( different grip/effect/feeling if you will )
triceps pushdowns
close grip bench
standing dumbbell curls superset with seated overhead triceps presses
rear delts machine
lat pulldowns
overhead back machine ( 3 different grips )
inner back machine
barbell shrugs for traps
smith squats
leg extensions
calves machines...
really awesome day felt great even if i trained over conventional limits i needed it.

Peace, G
Good post bro.
You're right in saying that it's not only about building muscle. It's also about forging the will and character. I can relate to that, and applying a lot of bodybuilding concepts to the grind that we call life has helped me a lot since I've endorsed the real bodybuilding lifestyle. True, I may be a loose cannon and joke about in class, but inside it's got real strong, and right now i'm applying forced reps to be able to finish my final year dissertation and finish the premed exams.
Thanks for the inspiring words. We never expect any less from you.

Hey G, I think you're a fan of hip-hop for workout music if I'm not mistaken. I was wondering what tunes/groups have the G-Diesel stamp of approval on them? I've been a rocker for a long time but worked out with a friend the other day, who put on some beats, and I realized they have a very driving and motivational rhythm for gettin' out those extra reps.

My favorite stuff is from the early to late 90s... Early music from Wu Tang Clan, Nas, Jay-Z, Outkast, B.I.G., Mobb Deep. The best of their work came when they were young and hungry. Some classic shit back in the day. Very melodic and agressive and heavy handed. Awesome training music in my opinion. Peace, G

Hey G, great entry. Too often do I see people neglect to work the most powerful muscle in the body: The human brain. Its what makes us the dominant species on earth. Proper mental attitude and focus is quite possibly more critical to sucess than the right routine, or the right diet, and its so often overlooked. The brain gives you your potential to reach enourmous strength. Ever hear this story?
An old man going for a walk one day, walking by a construction site notices a young boy playing, when a giant metal tube rolls on top of him. The old man rushes to help, and lifts this pipe off the boy. Later, it was discovered that pipe weighed over 1000lbs! This man didn't think for one second, I don't know if I can lift this, it might be too heavy, I might hurt myself. It was just, help the kid. How is that physically possible? He tapped into the greatest natural resource: brain power combined with internal energy. Sometimes recognising a story like this, and striving to reach that mental state each and every workout can yield much more positive gains than just following the next routine of the pros.

G, i was reading back over your diary and i was thinking back to entry #102. My sister in law and her husband are both marines and have both fought in Iraq. they're home safe now, but everytime i think of them i think of the word sacrifice. brothas, sacrifice is the core of what we do. more important than that though, every morning when i wake my ass up at 4:30 am, i'm thankful that i can hit the iron. it is a blessing.

just read #108....hit the heart big time my friend. When a human takes time to share these kinds of feelings and thoughts...its so very special. With what we do in the gym...and living this kind of life...always wanting to strive...reach and maintain...its so good to be able to stop for a moment and read your words..and embrace the "why we are here and doing what we are doing". We are the same age, grew up in the same time, different coasts, but shit the music has always been bi-coastal. 2-Pac, Biggie Smalls, Run-DMC, NWA, Fuck even the Sugar Hill Gang. Young, hungry, shit to prove with every rhyme....This morning I was on my way to get Danny to help with some yard work and the station I usually listen to and the back up station were playing talk radio shit..The only station spinning disks was the local hip-hop station, playing the weekly top 40...What the fuck was that shit? When did hip-hop sell out to pop? Damn, I tore the truck apart trying to find a cd..no cd's what? Where the hell did my damn PUBLIC EMEMEY cd go?, fuck If could have taken my brain out and scrub that bad music out then I would....

Commerce happened, capitalism, mainstream consciousness happened... When Coke bought Vitamin Water a few weeks back, 50 Cent made $400 million in stock options, that is what happened. Eazy Duz It... I'll tell ya what, the guy that gets no respect but was a pioneer of the West Coast movement was The D.O.C. He was Dr. Dre's first protege. Before Snoop and Eminem. Got in a major car crash that wrecked his larynx. A shame. But he had a classic album and wrote most of the lyrics on The Chronic.

So true about Ice Cube. I love to listen to "The Predator" when lifting. There's so much energy and righteous anger on that disc. It really gets me fired up and in the zone. There was alot of truth in what Cube was saying, I mean, he really had a message. Of course, all the PMRC types heard was the profanity, completely misssing what he was talking about. And now he's doing shit like "Are We There Yet?" It seems like there's no soul in the music today, well, the stuff that's popular anyway. It's all just about money and women. Kinda the same thing with some aspects of bodybuilding, and what you were saying about the "old school." There are all these dudes out there who are more concerned about if their UnderArmor shirt matches their shorts then if they're lifting and eating properly. All flash and image, no substance or soul.
I hear you all talk about rap and hip hop and all i can think is life is so much different in the midwest than on the east or west coast. Me i grew up listening to rock from the classics like Ac/Dc and Van Halen and Ozzy and just grew up to make the transition to heavy metal and hard rock. Guess i kinda missed something in music selection since now i just have no taste for rap music.

Guess i kinda missed something in music selection since now i just have no taste for rap music.
I don't think that it is a coast thing, it is a generation thing. Now I am not talking crap..Now a days I listen to the likes of Marvin Gaye, Berry White, Earth Wind and Fire, WAR, the shit my parents jammed to back in the day. Rap for my generations was brand new, eye opening. These were guys who were going to say what they had on their minds and the did not give a shit if you listened or not. It was not about the money or the fame, they were artist, painting a picture of their lives with their words...They were painting a picture of our lives, to a point...Your generation has not had a musical revolution, hopefully some day....

Speaking of that world... It is hilarious to see Ice Cube in Disney movies. He was the epitome of young, pissed off and anti-establishment. His lyrics were blistering with rage and now he is super mainstream. Amazing. Peace, G
Haha....Ice Cube DID a total 180...but in terms of being consistent I think he fits the bill...his last album 'laugh now cry later' was awesome, and he's dropping another album soon which should be off the hook too
hip hop is a wonderful art if you be careful not to fall into the bling hype bullshit...like you G i find a lot of inspiration and motivation from some artists...people need to learn to actually listen to the lyrics instead of listenin to wutever has the hottest beats....i was doin front squats on sunday mornin and i was the only cat in da gym and as my legs were twitchin some lyrics popped into my head and i wanted to sdhare them wit you..."Cause sometimes you just feel tired. You feel weak. And when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up. But you gotta search within you, try ta find that inner strength and just pull that shit out of you, and get that motivation to not give up, and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse." straight from my man Eminem

Hey G,
Been a while since I've been on the site, I got sucked in and sidetracked by many things. But now I'm back. Back to working hard and claiming what's mine.
Something you've talked about many times in articles and entries has happened to me for another time in only the past couple years. The death of a peer, This kid was even a year younger than me,17 years old, and I might of had even drank with him a couple times on weekends. He was a good kid, with aspirations in football, it was his passion. He had went down the shore for the fourth and on his way back an accident on the parkway occurred. Now he's gone.
So many things you've said have never rung truer than now. To say a fire has been lit inside of me would be a huge understatement. The fire that burns inside of me now, to take all that could and should be mine, is insurmountable. In the blink of an eye so many things can be taken away from everyone of us, by just one event. I don't think the people in our town have even let it set in yet, everyone is still in shock. but the reality is he is gone and will not be going back to high school in the fall. Too young man, too young.
As you've said before, I do not fear death, I fear not accomplishing everything I have aspired to obtain and become.
p.s. Sorry if this is not well written but there are too many words to say, I think you can all understand though
