I dont like to workout with shoes on is that weird? people have asked me about it before I just dont feel comfortable. I always wear socks tough. A guy asked me about it today. He said he hasnt seen anybody do calf raises without shoes especially at 400 pounds. Benching and dumbells isnt to bad but i cant stand them for leg press squat or deads. I just wondered what others thought.

i didn't wear shoes for awhile, then i started to get shooting pains in my feet and doc's said it was cause i did that, no support for the arches.

Believe it or not some people are big advocates of doing certain lifts like deadlifts or squats with no shoes or something such as slippers to get a good flat surface feel on the floor. Also Arnold trained barefoot, if you look at his old bodybuilding photos back in his prime, he was almost always barefoot. Me personally I wear good ol chucks! Except for when I'm doing oly lifts then I like to wear my weight lifting shoes.

ive been wearing nike frees (the ones that kinda look like watershoes). hey are great for lifting but sometimes il keep on on for cardio afterwards and my arches hurt for days after. Try those or some wrestling shoes if you want some options.

imo put some shoes on for upper body stuff. it would suck to drop a dumbell on ur foot w/ no shoes on

If I forget to wear my chucks, I do DLs in my socks. I've done squats in socks before.

most of the time i lift in my garage, wich is like dirt and mud and concrete, so no.....but sometimes i get barefoot when working out my calves. Otherwise im too twitchy and cautious to the idea of dropping or stubbing my toe.

Once some huge weight falls on your feet you are going to regret not wearing shoes.

Though I know others do it/have done it, I can't picture why people would lift without shoes. Never mind dropping something on your foot, I'm sure a 45 lb plate will still hurt regardless, but gotta wonder how clean some gyms are.

Bingo, why risk getting an infection in your foot that could possibly spread througout your body. Wear the shoes to stay healthy by avoiding the shit that lingers in the gym floor, adapt to wearing them/training with them.

gotta agree with the last 2 posts, hygeine is a massive issue in gyms, its bad enough that some people are too fuckin lazy to wipe sweat off their benches, there is no telling what nasty shit is on the gym floor...

even if i have to shower at the gym, i still wear a pair of flip flops...

Good idea, chucks are the way to go. Or those Nike "free" shoes that were mentioned by Gjn. I was trying to work out barefoot before, but was always worried about stepping on something and getting injured from something stupid. at least this is a little preventive.

I suggest shopping around though, if you look you can get them for real cheap, $20 sometimes.

I like to train legs and back barefoot. Better contact with floor when doing heavy weight.

I train with no shoes mostly because I'm at home training...The gym i was at before didn't allow people to lift w/o closed toe shoes...

After having a 100lb plate fall over onto my toe today (I wear cross-trainers), I'm actually considering wearing steel-toed boots when i lift.

It probably wouldn't hurt since I'm so clumsy anyway.

have you tried wrestling shoes? theyre really confortable and are almost as good as not wearing shoes, yet offer some support and a little protection from a falling plate

No, I hadn't thought much about my options yet. I'll definitely look into that, though. Thanks man.

Is there a particular brand of wrestling shoe that you like better than others?

Until now I didn't even know there were special shoes for wrestling.

My buddy does his heaviest sets of deads in his socks, and he swears by this for more power.
