View Full Version : First lift?
Sometimes while doing things like DB shoulder presses, DB bench, etc, I have a spotter give me the first rep and bang out the 2nd through whatever like nothing. Is this beneficial at all? I find that on DB shoulder presses I will struggle like crazy to get the first rep up, and only get about 3 or 4, but with an assisted first lift I can get 8-10.
Basically what I am asking if the assisted first rep is totally cheating you out of the set?
And how many of you guys get this assisted first rep?

no, if it works for you, do it. Even though you are not totally getting that first rep, what it all comes down to is: are you stimulating the muscle? And since you are with the rest of your set, it's not a problem.
i face the same thing too if someone helps me with the first rep i go all out , i think its a mental thing
Don't let it bug you. Db presses of any kind are difficult, as they start out at the bottom, and its hard to get weight out of the bottom from the first. I normally get a spot to help myself with getting the first one, and then carry on. You are doing all the rest of them by yourself, so that will wake up the fibers.
I don't see a problem with assisting the first rep. So long as you're not sloppy the rest of the set...ala you're just lifting too much weight; but if you can bang out a few good form reps, no prob there.
On heavy presses I have my partner help it up on the first one but I don't count that as a rep. I see no problem in it.

I always have a spotter help me on the 1st lift of all presses..flat bench , incline, military, DB shoulder etc..it helps me a lot..my last set is always 2 or 3 or 4 reps and its not possible for me to 1st lift on my own..then that same weight would become my 1 rep max..lol
