View Full Version : Chest advice
Been training for a few years now, and my chest has always been lacking to the rest of my body when it comes to strength, its not as if I neglect it or anything, I just don't know whats keeping it behind, I train it just as hard as everything else, but its always seems to lag in growth, my current routine is as follows: (based on a 5 day split chest/back/legs/shoulders and traps/arms)
Warm up - 135lb incline BB 10-20
70lb Incline DB press 10-12
80lb Incline DB press 8-10
85lb Incline DB press 4-8
80lb flat DB press 10-12
85lb flat DB press 6-8
50lb DB fly's 12
60lb DB fly's 8-10
60lb DB pullovers
70lb DB pullovers
DipsX2sets-failure
(switch it to a BB routine when spotters available)
keep in mind its been like this for a solid 3 months.. no growth.
any suggestions???

If you've been doing this exact same routine for 3 months my first suggestion would be to change it up. You can't do the same thing over and over... your body will eventually adapt and you'll hit a plateau, which is where you are now. Change exercises as well as rep ranges... switch it up more and I bet you'll start seeing some progress again.
your routine looks pretty solid. Don't know about your form, but when pressing, try to pinch your shoulder blades together as you're pressing. and try to keep your shoulders back at the same time. I was having some chest developement issues a while back and by doing that with my shoulders and shoulder blades, I started to see some progress. Good luck

Im not a pro or anything but it looks like you are doing to many pressing movements. I asked H~Bomb who is another animal brother he gave me a work out that helped break my plateau.
He said instead of doing a light as hell warm up. He said warm up heavy(i was nervous because I didnt want to get an injury). but I went as heavy as I could but could still get 8-12 reps. Which was i think 250ish. then after that 3 reg sets increasing as much weight as i could. then each week i upped my warming up weight about 5-10 lbs. after about a month of doing that i broke my plateau by 15lbs.
Here is what my chest work out looked like.
Flat BB benchpress
Incline DB flies
Hammer machine incline press
Cable flies.
I always went heavy and it worked for me. Its worth a shot if it will help u past your plateau.

mm, yeah, like the others have said, when the same routine is done enough, your body will adapt to it, and you will stop seeing gains. well, if you train your chest just as hard as the rest of your body, and it still lags, maybe its time to start training it harder? i counted you were only doing nine sets, i would suggest, doubling that. that would be a big shock to the pectoral muscles. heck, for my first chest exercise I will do at least nine sets. then, go on to do 4, 5 more different exercises, though mind you, i dont do 9 sets for every exercise just the first. play around with different exercises, throw in some dips, do different angle barbell presses (even if you dont have a spotter) and dumbell presses, hit different angles every week. do the big heavy compound exercises first, then work you way down to the smaller single joint stuff. i.e. barbell presses first, then to dumbell presses, then your flies, and etc.... like the guy said in dodgeball... keep your body guessing.
Sound advice brothers.
Thanks a ton.
