View Full Version : What the hell am I doing wrong?

Gentlemen,
I have definition all over my body except my core. I follow a rigorous exercise routine and diet, and I only break my diet once a week (I like to go to bars on Friday). Even while drinking I only have vodka sodas... Basically, what the fuck am I doing wrong? I'm on enough supps to kill a horse... I run marathons for fun...
See this for my diet http://forum.animalpak.com/showthread.php?t=19602
I dont wanna bitch because I have gone down from 250 to around 190 in under 2 years, while maintaining mass/strength... but I want those cuts in my core... you know that vein across the abs... Anyone got a diet/routine that effectively targets that area? Any help is much appreciated.
Your buddy,
NJC

yup... besides, even if (in a twisted world) you wouldn't care about the cals in alcohol, it has loads of side effects and it's detrimental to any bodybuilding purpose...
save it for occasions, RARE occasions

If you want to be as cut as you say you want to, then your friday night ritual is going to have to go. No more soda "especially". When you reach a certain level, every little thing becomes a factor in the goals you're trying to achieve. Stick to your diet plan and routine, don't cheat.

i checked out your diet and training,
what i would do is to cut out the running and instead do a cardio session after lifting on the bike, elliptical, etc, because running tends to also burn muscle, although it is really good for your cardiovascular system. so i assume you do like to run so maybe 2-3 days a week you can do that.
as far as the vodka on friday nights only i really dont think thats going to really hurt you. i mean unless your trying to become a proffesional bodybuilder you can get away with it, dont be afraid to live a little.

That's true and I don't want to take a carb blocker... I can't imagine that being good for your body at all... and I absolutely refuse (and find morally unacceptable) any kind of steroid... This is something I believe everyone here can embrace.

also keep in mind that the stomach region is the last place the body will go to as far as burning fat. so everything else right now is already lost its fat, give it a little more time and you should start seeing the belly fat come off. when i did a cut thats how it worked for me, i was getting cut everywhere except my stomach, but eventually i started to lose the belly fat and now i have very visable cuts and striations

I'm not convinced that a lot of cardio is always the answer.
I think someone on here already said to much cardio can burn muscle.
Many (but not all) of the long distance runners, bikers or swimmers i know (people who do mostly cardio) have layer a of fat.
I also think your body can be trained to store fat too, since that is your main fuel for long term cardio.
Also, don't forget, some people just have fat in areas that's almost impossible to get rid of. These people "may" want to think about a little lipo surgery.

I've read a bunch of articles on steroids, mostly because I'm a big baseball fan and ever since 3-4 years ago roids have been a hot button... It seems the cons outweigh the pros... But I'll watch that DVD, its about roids in sports right?

i respect your opinion on the steroids and alcohol. but unless either of these two are ABUSED... they technically are not that bad for you. im not saying steroids are ok to take, but they have been exploited by the media and have a bad rep- because they focus on the people that abused them. if used properly, well the health risks are not horrible as the media says so. same goes with alcohol- hell if i drank a six pack everyday then yea thats bad and i would lose muscle, gain fat, etc. but if you drink it in moderation- say one night a week, its really not goin to kill you! haha, and yes i understand that alcohol is detrimental, but those who bash on us who drink on a friday night, its not like were abusing it

Interesting, but do they do those numbers by totals or do they do it by percentage of use? Meaning, more people probably drink than take roids, thus there would be more death/injury from it in total number, but what about percentage or users vs. death.

no, and I risk a ban talking about this, but you gotta understand that many steroids are actually medicines given to sick people (though in a smaller dosage)... I think they meant the side-effects are very often over-appreciated... no wonder a dude with no knowledge about bodybuilding sees a clip of greg valentino and the next thing he says to everyone is that steroids will cause your arms to explode
nobody here is telling anybody to use them, because after all, as G Diesel says, who gives a fuck whether your training partner is natural or not? just that it's good to be properly informed...

Noone is advising you to take any illegal substance, it could not be further from the truth. You should stay away from all drug use. But you cant be so nieve to believe that that Steroids do not play a major role in Sports, always have, always will.........it has to do with being the best at what you do, and some will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals.

Agree with KAM here again. There is plenty of research out there for you to find on your own, and going into that here would lead us down a road that could violate some of the rules at The Forvm.

with keto your body knows it depends on ketones for well being, once your body utilizes your dietary fat, it has body fat to create ketones as long as you walk for cardio you will be burning fat even laying on the couch
with other diets
your body still depends on glycogen
and once glycogen is done, your body may utilize bf for energy or muscle mass
depends on what you do

Why is it that higher intensity cardio burns so much muscle when you're in ketosis? I'm curious because I'm in the military and I HAVE to run 3x a week. I like running, but I don't particularly like losing muscle.

High intensity cardio feeds itself from glycogen, since there's no glycogen in your body it will break down muscle for energy

Why does your body not continue to use the fat for energy though? Can it not break it down fast enough or something?
Also, even though you're breaking down muscle, you're still using fat TOO right? I'm not saying it's worth it but since I don't have a choice with running, I hope I'm atleast still burning fat.

if the intensity is very high you won't really burn much fat... aminos/carbs most likely
but the good news is HI cardio boosts your metabolism big time so after the session you burn more fat then usual
make sure you have your weekly cheat meal since you'll need the carbs in it (and even consider having 2 cheat meals a week)...

Also, even though you're breaking down muscle, you're still using fat TOO right? I'm not saying it's worth it but since I don't have a choice with running, I hope I'm atleast still burning fat.
not in my opinion, have you ever heard about the term skinny fat?
ok JARED?
he's fit and an example to the society but imo he's fat

I try to take it easy, I'm a natural runner so I guess that helps. Technically, it's probably not considered low intensity but I can usually keep my HR between 150-160 while running. LIke I said, to me that feels pretty low as far as intensity goes. I guess that's why 130HR feels so useless.

Well that sucks. I don't really have any other options for cardio.
I'm on week 7 and just judging by the mirror, I don't appear to have lost (much) muscle. I've definitely lost most of my fat except for what's left on my stomach and a little bit on my chest. Hopefully I'll be able to hit my goal in the next few weeks with minimal muscle loss.
So the ideal cardio for keto is 45-60 mins at a heart rate less than 130 (walking)?

Interesting. So I should really never run, but walk at like 4.5mph at a slight incline

So for fat burning.
Is interval cardio out of the question?
Like 30 minute sessions, in the morning, before eating.
Running hard for 2 minutes, and walk for 1 minute.
I too hate slow, long, low intensity cardio.

what ever time fits in to your daily schedule the best. unless this question is for a school project of some sort, it really is subjective.
I personally prefer pre-work out.

me, I would never really run on an empty stomach... even for the pwo option, I'd still make sure to have at least some aminos after lifting before cardio
