View Full Version : head pain while lifting
2 days ago I was doing straight bb curls and on probably like 6th or 7th rep on 105lbs i think the back of my head started to hurt so I had to stop that set and it kept throbbing after i was resting so I didn't do anymore on that exercise, but after i waited about 10 minutes the pain basically went away and i finished my workout without it hurting for the rest of the time.
Today I was on incline bb bench and after warming up on 135 I went up to 185 and on about my 6th or 7th rep again my head started to hurt really bad this time. I had to stop lifting and go home and my head still hurt for over 30 minutes after but the pain slowly went away. I thought it could've been how I am breathing and not getting enough oxygen into my brain but this hasn't ever happened before. The first time it happened I only had coffee before I lifted and today I had pump and shock therapy, I was thinking it could maybe me caffeine but I've always had caffeine before I lifted. Does anyone know what it could be I don't think i need to go to the doctor because I only have this problem when I'm lifting.
I`ll bet this is down to you holding your breath whilst lifting, focus on making sure you are breathing while doing the exercise.
Alright thats what I was thinking it would be I've been going so hard after like 5 reps on heavy weight that I probably don't even breath, but I was just reading it could be a neck problem also which I would need to see a chiropractor for I'm still not sure what it is though I might just have to go to the doctor it's been like an hour and a 1/2 since I've been home from the gym and it still hurts a little.
Ok, heres what I`d do,first go see your doctor to be sure there isn`t a problem, second concentrate on perfect form on every exercise with full breathing on EVERY REP,if you still have problems then it must be down to your lifting techique or form IMO.
All the best to you mate, hope it gets sorted.

Been there had that.Breath alot more.Maybe take another few seconds in between sets
Would it be breathing though if my head still hurt hours after it got a lot better but still hurt over 2 hours later. should i be fine to lift tomorrow

i have had the exact same thing your describing. It only ever happens to me when im tired. Its like a tiredness headache that is brought on by intense exercise. I took a few days off training and caught up on sleep and it went. The few times it has happened has been after not much sleep, lifting pretty heavy, not breathing perfectly and straining my neck. By starining my neck i mean tensing it and pushing it into the bench when doing presses for example. If your pretty stressed too and your blood pressure is slightly higher than normal heavy lifting can set it off easily.
Give it a go having plenty of sleep and concentrating on form more than normal and lighten up. if still persists see the doc!
i benched today and it was fine i went pretty heavy, up to 255 on singles but when i did a drop set with high reps on lower weight it hurt a little bit, i guess im just going to stick to low reps for a while. And also it doesnt hurt on non-compound exercises even if I'm going high reps.

ive had my head hurt before while liftin, but it went away
Head to the doctor.
see what the doc says.. no need to push it... it could be your neck... or a ruptured blood vessel
i've had a history of migraines. that being said, i've found i cannot take animal nitro preworkout because it gives me intense headaches that force me to quit. the pump and shock therapy may be giving you similar effects. i dont know. the back of my head still hurts from time to time though, mostly from a combination of not breathing right and i think i maybe from tensing my neck muscles so much during a lift.

I don't think any of us in here are doctors, so your best bet would be to go see one if it persists.
My opinion is that it's a combination of your breathing and possibly your neck. I wouldn't go to a chyropractor though, one almost paralyzed my father. I know that muscle tension in your neck can cause a nasty headache. I would try stretching your neck and see what that does.
