View Full Version : 8-Week Test/Stak Log with Lab Work

I got my bloodwork done a couple of months ago, and my test measured at 340. This is at the very low end of the spectrum for a 43-year-old (262-1593 is the range), enough that my doctor doesn't want to supplement it. So it's time to find the answer to the question: Does test/stak measurably increase test levels?

By the time I bought all the supps for the two months, plus the three saliva tests, I thought about calling this log "Braindrop Makes Universal Rep's Car Payment", but didn't. :) Here's how I'm breaking it down.

First, saliva tests at the start (today), after the first cans of Test & Stak (3 weeks), and at the end. This will provide some hard data.

My program:

Wake Up: Pak + Flex
Yoga
Breakfast: Test
45m pre-workout (or mid-morning): Stak
30m pre-workout (lifting days only): Pump
Immediately post-workout (lifting days only): Nitro
Bedtime: Omega

I just finished up a week on the road followed by a week at the beach on vacation, so I'm up 9 pounds from my low. I expect most of it to be gone by the end of the week -- insufficient hydration combined with alcohol consumption. Starting weight = 225.

I'm doing a 3-day a week split, with 30 mins of cardio following lifting. The non-lifting days will either have an hour of elliptical or a 5k run. I'll take one day/week off (probably Saturday).

I managed to trip over a lawn chair yesterday while taking out the trash. Fortunately, I realized when I hit it that I'd break my ankle if I didn't go with it, so ended up on my ass with a lawnchair on top of me holding my ankle for about 5 mins. It feels ok today, though it's swollen.

My back is thrashed from yesterday as well, good times!

My nutrition breakdown is ugly -- it was my monthly boy's night out at a local brewpub. 2 beers, a vodka tonic, and some Macallen for dessert.

re: diet

A typical day would be:

Breakfast: 2 Kashi Go-Lean Whole Wheat Waffles w/ 2T 100% maple syrup
Mid-Morning: 1.5 cups nonfat milk + 1.5 scoops ON whey
Lunch: 7 oz chicken breast or lean pork loin grilled, 1T A1 sauce
Mid-Afternoon: Can of pineapple or 1/2 oz of cashews or something similar snacky
Dinner: Varies wildly. Everything from chicken stir-fry, broiled fish, etc.
Pre-bed: 2 scoops casein in a shake, either with milk or water, depending on my totals for the day.

I try to maintain a 500-900 kcal/day deficit, and will supplement the above on heavy workout/cardio days, usually by adding another protein shake into the mix post-workout.

I do 1-2 cheat dinners a week, in terms of eating something whose macros are not perfect. Even when I do cheat meals, though, I keep the total caloric deficit going.

The difficult part of the whole diet thing is that I spend 1 week/month living out of a hotel in California. This is the only time I get to actually *see* my coworkers, and there's lots of going out involved... I'm for sure a work in progress. :)

Heading off to ABC soon, woot!

Worked out with Mrs. Brain today, it always makes me happier on chest day to have a spotter. After the shoulder pain from last week's incline bench, I decided to drop way down in weight and to use dumbbells, which seems to have worked out well.

My non-torn shoulder hurts like hell now, but I think it has been overcompensating for the left. Ice, ice, and then some more ice. It sucks that you're not supposed to do ibruprophen or aspirin while you're on Test. :(

I went light, with very slow, controlled motion both up and down. Every couple of sets, I went back to standing barbell press and did a set of 8 with just the bar. While they felt progressively better as the workout went along, they still had a couple of sticking points that hurt like hell. I think I'm going to stick with the bar for a few weeks. :(

Oakwood. It's more like an apartment complex than a hotel. They have a nice smith rack, and 260# of plates (one of each size from 45# down), plus a bunch of Cybex machines and cardio gear. I've been trying for a couple of years to convince them to get a set of the Bowflex 10#-90# adjustable dumbbells, but no luck so far.

Their gym is the main reason I stay here. I went through a half-dozen hotels in the first year I was doing this until I found one that was at least decent.

You have until 4:30 PM, October 28, 2008 to apply to vote by mail. Here's a good page on exactly what you have to do: http://www.democrats.org/page/community/post/MilleniumDelta/CCvp

I hope you give it serious consideration. I don't know your politics, so I'm not presuming you'll vote Dem -- but this election cycle is going to have long-term implications on the quality of life you'll lead and the quality of world in which you'll live.

That said, if you're planning on voting Republican, you should probably do a few more sets of deads and forget the whole voting idea. :)

Shoulder day, whee. The overhead presses felt better this week, especially dumbbells. Standing barb military hurts if I try to explode the bar upward, but if I do a controlled, steady push up and down, there isn't any pain to speak of after the first 3 sets of the bar...

The superset kicked my ass.

looks good.. something i just picked up from my westside wo's is a tris set for delts, its side/front/rear- each 20 reps for a total of 60 a set.. i thought i would share that with you and see if youd like to try it after seeing some of that delt SS you did...

and what are bench tris?

rear delt fly, like the thing danny tought you at the ABC, where you bring the dbs together under your legs while your sitting bent over and then bring them out to a fly motion.

Just did a couple with 20#. The right is fine, the left is fine going up, but when I pause at the top and do a controlled lower, still some pain. I'll try some with 15# on shoulder day next week. I'm not sure I could superset those in with the other two, I was wiped out by the time I finished front delts.

i also toss em in on back night, you may try it if your shoulders are too fried with your normal routine.

or on shoulder night, i start with them and run the rack, as the weights get lighter i switch to side laterals and turn my pinkies up, palms back, to finish hitting rear and side delts. youd be amazed at how heavy 3lbs feels with this form.

Yes, reverse roman chair. I just hold the plates behind my neck with both hands exactly like I would for a situp. After nearly a year of yoga, I can rest my forehead on the metal base comfortably, which lets me get everything positioned before starting.

lol i feel old at my gym sometimes. i think skill comes with age, and treachery with youth.
eg: these kids in my gym, tossin up big numbers, but their range of motion is only 1/4 to 1/2 full range, but they have descent size and are fairly lean. Im just waiting for the day a knee snaps under pressure or a pec tears. i dont mean to wish bad on them, but their ego numbers are bound to bite them in the ass.

Try your barbell shoulder presses standing as well, you cant go as heavy, but ya get an ab/core workout at the same time. I've also done calves on the same night as standing military presses, and damn, your legs will shake from the knee down, lol.

try incline bench 225, 5x5 or 3x3, or whatever poundage you can handle, but is still heavy enough to just get the 5x5 or 3x3 whichever you choose. try in for 2 workouts then switch back to flat bench and see if it busted your 190.

its helped me increase my overall incline weight. ive gone from shittin myself at 185 for 5 to reppin 225 for 8. my flat bench has gone up as well, though im not sure how much i only flat bench 155 x20 for 2 sets for warm up.

It sounds like you and I have fundamentally different shoulder problems in terms of location, so I'm not surprised that different exercises affect us differently.

I've started doing standing military press 3x8 with just the bar on non-shoulder days. After about a week of this, there is definitely less pain in it. When I was in PT, it was getting worked 3-4 days/week with low weight, I'm going to try to continue that. I should start doing it incline with the bar too, just to see how it develops.

Speaking of, shoulder day today! I ate and drank way too much last night...

I figured out why it hurts when I do an explosive overhead move. When I get to the top of the lift, momentum keeps moving the bar higher, and my shoulder joint was getting stretched upward as I held onto it. Slow and controlled is the name of the game.

All said, it felt pretty good. It was hurting by the last set of 95#, but only about a 3/10 pain.

The second superset is the hardest thing I do every week, beating out deadlifts by a small margin.

my sets and reps start out at 5x5 (heavy) followed by 3x3 (heavier) for legs, chest and back
then i work my way down to moderate weights and high volume. most of my workouts are fairly voluptuous lol.

I can't do 5 days in a row, my body says FU.

Ms. B is still lifting twice a week (with me on Sundays, on her own Wednesdays), and she's doing cardio twice a week as well.

So my thought for the day is that the 3 women from _Namaste Yoga_ need to make a Braindrop sandwich...

hows the shoulder "pop"?

Braindrop
11-12-08, 11:49 am
Unfortunate. I've been heavy on ibruprophen, but broke down and popped a vicodin from my glassblower emergency burn stash so I could get through work yesterday. It's really, really ache-y, like I would expect from a weather change, except moreso. It's colder and wetter here in California than at home, so that's probably not helping.

I'm doing nothing but yoga this week, except maybe a light, light rehab-level shoulder workout this afternoon.

i find when i overdo mine, 2 weeks off from shoulder work helps with the pain management. i dont skip my heavy bench day, just shoulders for 2-3 weeks and it helps alot. then when i come back to a shoulder workout i normally do better and make gains for the next 3-4 shoulder days.

im no scientist, so this is strictly my train of thought.
The products obviously work, but somehow the second cans backfired your bodys T production. I would lay off of it for some times and let your body level off (i know its not a pro-hormone) then try another T-test to see where you are. You may have given your body too much "help". (wish i was a scientist)

besides the disapointing second cans, hows the workouts coming along?

Correct.

That is super screwed up bro. Are you getting a follow up physical? If the test is accurate you have cause for concern of something much more serious going on. Did the doctor give you any feed back on why this would have happened? There has to be a reason and hopefully it isn't anything too serious? Like BC said, maybe the test was skewed? Let's hope that is the case. I'm very curious if you are going to find out anything more?

Did the doc say your test levels were abnormally low for your age/bodyweight/medical condition before you started the stack?

Let us know the scoop bro. I'm sure everyone will want to know.

Hope this turns around for you man.

if your gettin somenthin outa them, then nm, i've always found flys helped when i was tryin to shed weight, more of an endurance exercise. Mine worked in reverse, i got some size/strength then i was able to do flys. Now though i wont do em very often at all, maybe im not performing them right, but i get alotta pain in the shoulders from em, more than incline or flat presses.

It probably gets back to us being hurt in totally different shoulder spots -- the presses are what kill me -- the closer the incline to vertical, the more discomfort.

This is the second chest workout in a row that the shoulder hasn't hurt at all. There's still a noticeable strength loss on the left side, but it's better than last time, which is all I can ask for as a trend...

Once I know for sure I'm going to have a job for the next six months, I'll do a retest to find out which was the anomaly, high or low (the range was 70-120 for 'normal'). I wouldn't be surprised if job stress had really depressed my levels by the end (my company got bought, then the company that bought us got bought, so I went from being in a 40 person shop to a 6,000 person company in a 7-week span.)

Went through that same exact scenario last few years bro. The un-detected stresses from it definitely has a big impact on us. I'll bet tall dollars you nailed it here before ever even seeing the doc!

Your workouts and progress show that your health is still improving and you seem to be doing fine so my bet is your body is pretty happy with it's current state of hormone levels. Still though, if you can get help from the doc and get it on a prescription card than that is gravy brother ;) LOL!

Ain't a dang thing wrong with that!

First off, my apologies for just now seeing this log. I just read the entire thing and I have to say my hat's off to you bro. Keeping on track with travel, stress and injury....that is dedication right there boys and girls. I have to thank you for the computer once more. You're a good man and a good friend and I enjoy having ya at the ABC's. We need to get another one going and I'll show ya some things you can do to work on that shoulder. Also we can do chest, so I can observe your form....the discomfort is mostly from your injury but I'm guessing that your form is off a bit causing to aggravate your shoulders more than it should.

if RIFed means what i think it means, i found with myself in the past that the tension of not knowing was worse than the actual event.

I had about a 6 week period at a previous job feeling like everyday the hammer was gonna fall. I ended up with a strange knot in the left side of my neck, large marble sized lump, the day that i finally got RIFed the knot disappeared.

The rest of my week sucked from a workout standpoint, although it was helpful professionally. I've now got a couple of managers in a tug of war to see who gets me. Went out every night, drank too much, etc. The only saving grace was that it was sushi three of the nights.

I should have skipped cardio this morning.

Picked up a ton (literally) of composted turkey manure. Unloaded from truck.

Ran tiller for 90 minutes on a 30' bed for blackberries. Managed to get 4" down in my rock-strewn "soil". There will be a backhoe rental in my future.

Dug out front garden, moved and tilled in half the compost.

Planted 150 bulbs in said bed.

Covered bulbs with more soil.

Quietly wept when I tried to straighten up.

Brain, good work in here, hope you get to feeling better.

Just a quick comment, I think I read somewhere back in your log that you had Test levels well below 200...you need to find a doctor who will help you with this. Low test levels can be helped, but not by OTC supplements. If your body isnt producing test properly naturally, then a natural test booster wont help. Low Test levels can cause high blood pressure, high cholesterol, increased risk for Prostate problems, depression and many other bad things (just as having testosterone levels that are too high will). Get some medical help. If your doctor wont help you, find one who will. You pay for a service. If your doctor is not providing appropriate service, take your money elsewhere.

Granted, I have not been following your log daily, so I may have missed something here. But I hope that you get this checked out and fixed. Low Test levels are criminal and no man should have to live with low Test levels.

Good luck,
IRBS

Thanks! We've had rain twice in the last week, and it seems to have knocked the pollen down to the point that I feel human again.

I think we're talking about two different scales. The reference range for the saliva test I took is 70-120. I had a 110, 117, 74. I'm going to get another test kit next time I make a BB.com order, I think that the crazy stress I was under around the time of the last test. If it comes out in the 70s again, I'll talk to my doctor about it.

You need a blood test by the doc to really be able to gauge what your levels are. Just go in and tell them you want you Free and Total Testosterone levels checked. That way, you'll know for sure.

I've built a dozen 4'x4'x12" raised beds, moved almost 12 yards of dirt, 6 yards of mulch, dug two 30-foot trenches for blackberries, planted nearly 500 bulbs, dug holes for a dozen new trees, and generally been hitting the yardio hard.
