Whats up guys? Lately I've been packing oats into my shakes after seeing how much protein/carbs/cals are in a cup of oats, they make my shakes pretty damn thick but it still tastes alright. Anyways whats everyones opinions on oats? Good for bulking? Not good? Discuss.

Awesome for bulking. They are very calorie dense. I just wish they tasted better.

Never ground them down and added them to shakes, but I have considered it. Definitely a good idea assuming it is remotely palatable. Peace, G

Staple for any strength athlete, whether bulking or cutting.

I forgot to mention they are dirt cheap too. I can get a 7kg bag of oats for $2.40 Canadian. You can't go wrong with that.

I have added it to shakes if you dont mind the texture than go for it bro.

If you have time to eat some regular old oats you may wantto get your self some steel cut oats. they taste better and have more carbs per 1/2 cup

Bowl of oatmeal or a peanut butter sandwich on wheat is always my preworkout meal. Peace, G

I ahve always loved oats. Dont eat them much anymore. Great as a stand alone meal or mixed with a shake.

Like a few of the boys said, oats are a staple in my diet.. I cram down 3 cups in the morning mixed with a bit of sugar free apple sauce or a couple tablespoons of natural peanut butter... No better carbs than good ol fashioned oats!

If I may, I have to reccomend getting a magic bullet. I use it at least 3 times a day. If I am going to make and omlet, I put my egg whites and all my other ingredients in it, blend in 5 seconds, and wah-la. Same goes for coffee beans, leftover chicken breasts (for chicken salad), and to stay on topic, oats. If I am using a regular protein shake that is lacking in the carbs dept., I just add milk, 2 scoops powder, and 1/2 cup oats, and I have a great post-workout or morning shake. Try it out, you wont be dissapointed fellas. FreakShow

Oats=quality food whether bulkin' up or cuttin' down. Hell, I STILL eat them around my workouts and I'm cutting carbs hard at the moment.

The Magic Bullet rocks, LOL. Seriously, my wife and I have had one for well over a year, and it gets used HEAVILY. (Like in 4-6 times a day between shakes and food). I actually just picked up a second one on sale at a local store just to have on hand in case we burn ours out, LOL.

Seriously - it's a great little blender for just about anything!

Do you guys ground them down, or just mix them whole into the shake? Sounds like that could work, as they taste like crap

Ryan

I just put the oats in my blender and run it on high for awhile. If you don't grind it up enough the shake will taste like crap.

my opinion of oats....

hmm, i just finished my before bed shake 1.5 scoops of optimum mass gainer, and 1/2 cup ground oats.

love em man. I actually think they make the mass gainer shakes better. give them some texture.

EAT UP!

I just found this recipe. It's similar to something my dad used to make. If it wasn't so late here i'd find a bit healthier one. There must be one with less margarine. Also I doubt you need the cereal, just add on more oats.

1/4 cup honey
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) margarine OR butter
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 (6-ounce) package diced dried mixed fruit (about 1 1/3 cups)
1 1/2 cups crispy rice cereal
1 cup Quaker® Oats (quick OR old fashioned, uncooked)

1. In medium saucepan, heat honey, margarine, sugar and cinnamon over medium-low heat until margarine is melted, stirring frequently. Bring to a boil; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in dried fruit, rice cereal and oats until evenly coated.
2. Press mixture evenly onto bottom of ungreased 8-inch square baking pan. Cool completely. Cut into bars. Store tightly covered in refrigerator.

Makes 24 bars.

Mods, could we possibly get a recipe section under diet also?

Thanks!

I love oats. I have a 50# bag of them in my basement right now. I eat 3 cups a day, 1.5 cups/shake. Just add water, protein, glutamine, and blend away. So tasty. I'll back off them just alittle when I start to diet.

I've tried griding them and putting them into a shake but can't get it down. On a bulk I'll eat oats with a little honey or maybe some raisins on a cut with splenda.

Oats are as good as it gets for a carb source, packed full of fiber, complex carbs, and has a pretty good amount of protein. When bulking, I make it w/ 1c skim milk, and when cutting, I mix it w/ water. Sometimes, I will cook it w/ water, add skim milk, artificial sweetner, and 2 scoops whey protein powder when it is done and mix it up real good and it tatse awsome! I eat a good 3-4 bowls of this shit/day! When mixing into shakes, which I do quite frequently, cook in the microwave first and then mixing into your shakes w/ a handheld submersion blender, this keeps it from forming a nasty ass powder at the bottom of the shaker. It works great for me and I definately it is worth a try! Hope it helps ya out some!

My fav way to eat oatmeal.

1 cup oatmeal (dependent on your carb intake)
4 - 6 egg whites (1 yolk) (dependent on your protein intake)
tbs of extract (vanilla, rum, any extract of ur choosing)
Ground cinnamon (shake in the mixture)
6 packets of splenda

Mix all ingredients..........put in a frying pan (coat frying pan with Pam)

Flip when ready

Use sugar free syrup

Try it....its the bomb!!

I just tried oats in a shake for the first time this am. It was interesting, however I dont think I ground them down enough. I had a clump down at the bottom, however, using ON's whey they tasted ok.

Oats are as basic as whey protein. you should get them in every day; I prefer them in a shake.

All you have to do is make sure you grind them alone. Any blender will really do. Just get it going at the highest speed possible. Use a spoon to tamp them down so there are no big chunks. Then add your protein. I use a funnel and put 3/4 cup with two scoops protein powder into old water bottles.

That gives you a dry mix, a perfect meal replacement shake that keeps for days. Just add water and shake it up.

Haha wow I didn't think this would spark such a big discussion. What else do you guys put in your shakes? Heres what mine look like:

2 cups oats
1L 2% Milk
Some whey protein
Banana
A few frozen strawberries

It tastes pretty good and it's packed with calories too.

Oats are awesome for both bulking and cutting, being a slow release carb

From personal experience Oats helped me pack on a good amount of size and helped with my strength, I added 60grams to my whey protein shake in milk (all in the blender) and it was a more healthy weight gainer and tasted brilliant.

Would be good for anyone to give a shot at it!

When I,m shredding I don't need a big amount of oat for a big fullfiment meal...I stoled from my wife the 1/4 measuring cup that I keep in the oat bag. Heres the receipe:

1/4 cup oat in a big bowl;
1 cup of water;
2 cup of milk;
ground cinnamon; 4 min in microwave stir and another 1 min in micro et Voila !!!

If you want it thick let it sit for 10 to 20 min, while you read the morning news...

2 versions:

2 cups of oats (Quaker)
4 cups of water
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cinnamon
2 scoops protein powder
Cook while stirring on high heat about 6-8 mins

2 cups of oats (Quaker)
4 cups of water
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cinnamon
2 scoops protein powder
1 can baked apple slices (cut up if needed)
Cook while stirring on high heat about 6-8 mins

Works well for carbs and protein, helps to start the day off right.

I don't eat them for breakfast or anything like that. Too plain and boring. Plus if I'm getting 2 cups of oats in a shake and I'm averaging two shakes a day I figure 4 cups of oats is more than enough.

Oats are definitely a staple to my diet. I eat steel cut oats normally. They taste better and are higher in carbs. Although I always through a half scopp of regular oats in my PWO.

I buy the old fashioned oats at Raley's/Bel-Air/Nob Hill [Raley's brand].

Same exact thing as Quaker Oats, just a different conatiner and 1/2 the price.
