DIARY OF A BLUE COLLAR BADASS

I got the email I have been waiting for from Jess, "Brent are you interested in doing a deadlift demo again at the Arnold this year"? Before I finished the sentence I hit reply and sent "YES YES YES! THANK YOU SO MUCH JESS, I WILL DEFINITELY BE THERE".

This is where the journey starts.......................where did it begin? Many moons ago in an old school high school gymnasium. Where I was 5'11 and 145 pounds trying to get on the powerlifting team. I never deadlifted before and thought I would try it. I used a thin leather belt and with no warmup, went to 335 and after a 30 second lockout got the lift, and a spot on the team, due to my HEART and WORK ETHIC. I couldn't bench press 100 pounds...yes pathetic, and could not squat 135. I knew I could deadlift and wanted to be the best ever. A few years passed and many weight classes, I joined the USMC and attained the rank of Sgt while stationed at the Pentagon, and was the ONLY member of the USMC Power Team. I won a few world titles in their as well. I tore my right pec and part of my right bicep benching in 2003, had surgery, wore a sling for 4 weeks, and two weeks later with NO TRAINING pulled 705 in Alabama. I knew 800 was mine soon. I put it into overdrive. In November of 2004, just after visiting my best friends grave site who was murdered exactly one year prior, I tore my LEFT pec.......after swearing and almost passing out, I proclaimed to the world 800 would still be mine and take me to the fucking ER. That takes us close to now....my trek for the Arnold Classic Cage yet again, and 800 pound in the deadlift. I switched to the hook grip so not to tear a bicep. I partially tore it benching (rare) and the hook is just plain safer, does it hurt? Hell yeah! But I use it quite often for protection, and I do admit, do it because most just dont have the balls to do it.

A typical day in my life:

I live in a very small town, and travel 30 minutes to do my heavy day at a Private Facility called Austins, owned by a 76 year old man that benches over 400...officially weighing only 225...THINK ABOUT THAT! I have it in Four wheel drive low due to the snow falling, its friday night, my friends are at the titty bar, im not. I have Black Sabbath Paranoid blaring on my sound system. I have my Animal beanie pulled over my eyes. This is what its all about for me...the anticipation....what am I going to do today.....even if I am all alone...im going to blow that place away. Im sipping on hot coffee, my pre workout CD blaring on my sound system...RAPPER TI...WHAT YOLU KNOW ABOUT THAT......so loud the bass is hitting my ribs. This is where it starts............stay tuned....do you want to come along for the ride?......shall I proceed? Reading this is going to give you a different perecption on life and training, and may make it hard for you to smile in the future....welcome to the Diary of a Blue Collar Bad Ass..................I am certain ALL of you can relate to some extent...or you wouldnt still be reading...this is OUR journey....buckle up tight......

Ok so Im going to jump around a bit....follow me, I guarantee some enjoyment here. So tonight I get to the gym..and its COLD...like 59 degrees inside, 6 degrees outside. I purposely do my rack deads with a smooth bar, to work on grip, and its fatter, making it much harder to hold onto. I place it so the weight is 3 inches from the deck, almost a full pull. I add the one hundreds, so 245x3 reps, hook grip, my belt is hanging on the monolift for when I need it. Im wearing my Animal sweatshirt, animal beanie...its cold. No music playing.....you can hear the weights clanging. Add a plate....335x3 reps, hook. Still havent tied my wrestling shoes, hood is on, very quiet in the gym, but my rage inside is starting to come out. Add another plate, 425x1 no belt, no chalk, shoes untied, now the hood comes off...hands feel good, hard to hook grip a fat bar, but it must be done. Add another plate, 515x1, hoooked it, no chalk, good rep, im ready now...why fuck around with warmups? Sweatshirts off, Gray Universal Sleevless shirt that so many of us Animals love to wear. I grab my belt that has USMC SEMPER FI embroidered accross it. I load two more wheels and a 2.5 for 700 even. The bar bends so much its damn near on the floor as it is. Tie my shoes, Ipod on....WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT....blaring....a little chalk, over under grip, drop the hips, head up.BANG.....STAND UP....holy shit that was easy. Im on fucking fire.....throw a 25 on each side...750 even.....no need to rest, a little more chalk...drop the hips, booom, stand up, little stumble, hold on... ..easy rep, came up like BUTTER. NOw the real work, I go get the 4 inch box to stand on...now load up a new bar for Stiff leg dl, no belt, hook grip off the 4 inch box, grinding reps out with 515, no joke, it was heavy. Now I dump two wheels off each side, leaving 335, bent row......10 reps, no problem. Im on the floor....im spent, sweating in 59 degree gym. Lat pulls, fuck the warmup, give me the stack, 7 reps, slow and easy, drop it to 150x10 behind the neck. Heaviest Db in here is 125, no straps, 20 reps shrugs, wt abs and calves. Im out the door......more to follow.....

Damn Rock, sick fuckin night huh? Impressive shit...

So do you typically use hook grip for warm ups, and then switch over for your heavier sets? And when you say hook, do you mean overhand hook, or do you use an over-under hook grip?

With the hook its a double overhand grip. I have pulled 740 off the floor with no problem with the hook, but I recently discovered that I can garner MUCH more explosion with the over under. Its not a question of grip strength for me, as I can hold onto anything, but its all about EXPLOSION for me right now. My bicep has healed up (thank God) enough where I dont fear any injury to it using the over under grip now. I do my warmups with the hook still to strengthen my grip and make sure the hook is ready when I need it.

Rock, you're the man. I don't care what anyone says, deadlift IS the king of all lifts, and I feel that at my gym I'm probably about one of the 4 people that do them. Not quite up to your level yet. Question: have you ever tried deadlifting with a thick bar for grip? I got this book Dinosaur Training by Brooks Kubik and he's huge on doing all your lifts with a 3 inch thick barbell. he claims to have done 400+bench with the 3 inch, and 700 lb deads off the floor. What are your thoughts on that bar? ARe they worth it for me to get my own and carry it into the gym like a freak?

oK....quick entry here. 2 weeks left til the Arnold...its all I can think about. I go to the tanning salon a couple days a week just so I dont look like Casper, im not trying to be a bodybuilder like my boy Wrath...just want to look good in front of the huge expo crowd. This year is more important than any other Arnold for me as I had a really bad year last year, personally and professionally, I NEED this performance to be top notch. I am making my CD for my semnar as we speak. I carefully choose each song to ensure I will be pumped as WELL AS YOU GUYS in the crowd. I want it to be an EXPERIENCE, something you can take home with you to motivate you. I have signed many many posters and autographs and feel blessed to have done so, it is the fans that keep my fire burning.. Tomorrow is upper body day, chest delts and arms. I will be brutal and when I enter the gym (commercial gym tomorrow) I have my ipod on before I even step in, that way no one will talk to me. I will be in and out in one hour. I take two scoops of universals whey protein, with 16 oz of milk, 5 grams each of creatine and glutamine with me, and drink it right after the workout. While I am in there its all biznass. People stare...comment, but I barely notice, its all about the workout, think about it...all you gotta do is give yourself ONE HOUR each workout, and the results are forever. Two weeks left...playtime has been over for a while, I will be in my best shape ever, mentally and physically when you see me in the Cage. I have overcome many obstacles, as you have. I have had two deaths in my family, and other personal issues that have effected me, but I chose to use my training to get out of my rut. If a woman leaves you...breaks up with you..whatever, you still have the iron. In my opinion, a woman that understands your life is the one you should spend your time with, its that simple. I train four days a week, that is non negotiable. I am a professional powerlifter, even before that, I was just as dedicated, four days a week, its just how I roll. Friday is the most important training day of this cycle, I will DL a huge number, and that will dictate what numbers I will pull in the cage. So the motto of todays entry is...ONE HOUR...FOUR DAYS A WEEK......non negotiable. I dont care about the beach, or the night clubs, or whatever, training first...play later. Am I a bit cocky....yup, but Im CONFIDENT. You gotta be...have faith in you and what you do, dont let anyone hold you back. If it were easy everyone would look like Arnold and everyone would deadlift 800. Set a goal, set a plan, stick to it. More to follow..........

So I drove to the pansy ass commercial gym to train today. I worked all night so dragged my ass out of bed, had a small meal and a protein shake. Stopped and got a coffee, its cold up here. Drove to the gym...knowing the pansy parade would be in full swing in the gym. Wearing my animal beanie pulled over my eyes and my ipod on full tilt as I walk in the gym. I look over at the only squat rack and some dude is doing 225lb half shrugs with straps in the squat rack...I thought it was a SQUAT rack? So I waited....and waited...and waited....and then got my shot. I have to wak out of the little support area because I squat DEEP AND CLOSE...ass to calves. So walking ten steps back, with no belt I did:

135x2
135x5
225x5
315x5

Now some dude is on the smith machine doing half squats, and is talking to his apparent GF that he is the super squatter or something, and does 5 half squats with 315. SOOOOO....I load on 405 and dunk it 5 times, no problem, last one I stopped in the bottom position, looked around........thought about it....blasted it up. The bar was real whippy, didnt want to do anymore squatting. I have NOTHING against anyone in the gym....but whatever you can find for motivation USE IT! I dont talk to ANYONE while I am there so I know I never insult anyone...ever. OK>>>>>....now onto 45 degree back raises with weight, 2x15 reps, wt abs heavy, 2x10, pull thrus 2x10, almost ready to puke....calves....5 sets heavy. Im out the door.........got it done...didnt bother anyone...came, conquered....left.....more to follow.

What up Rock, nice log. I seem to be the curious one in this thread, but by back raises do you mean hypers? and what are pull throughs?
I thought you might like to hear that in the past week or so I've gotten addicted to training for strength really fast, pulled the most I've ever hit on DL's, and by the end of Project M I'm hopin to hit my goal of 420. Strapped, conventional, somewhat tall boots. Thanks for some inspiration

Sgt Rock
02-21-07, 11:29 pm
Good going brother! I do regular hypers sometimes, but the gym has a cool 45 degree back raise which I like better. AS for pull thrus, google it, and you will see how to do it. On the bottom part of a cable attachment, face away from the machine, walk way out....put a handle between your legs and do a squat.

I will write PAGES after the show...about the days before duing and after the show. ITs now tuesday, I have worked 13 hour shifts all weekend, and tried to force eat all night to keep my bodyweight up. I have one more workout tonight, just a light one, all the work has been done now. It is now time to enjoy the hard work. I have a CD I made for my Cage demo, and I play it every single time I drive anywhere, and I know exactly what weight and how many reps I will do during each song. Each song was carefully chosen to bring out the Animal in me and to help keep the crowd motivated as well. I feel REALLY good right now, bodyweight is up where it needs to be, bodyfat is very low for a pre contest powerlifter. I picture coming down the escalator to the very long lines at the expo with my boys Lad and Wrath, people stopping, staring, asking questions, its alot of fun to help out someone! Cutting the line and showing the "old guy" our ID to get in (the same old guy runs security every year...he is a TOTAL riot..remembers everyone). You can hear people in line say "Hey there are the Animals" "Hey is that Wrath" "Yeah its gotta be" Im getting ready fellas, its going to be a heck of a ride I can promise you that, the last rep will be at the end of my arms with me standing up.

Thanks bro, haven't hit it yet though, hit 405 last back day, there's work to be done. What I REALLY need to work on is my fuckin grip, without those straps I don't think I'd be able to hold on to much more than 350 or so, I've gotta get on that.

This is motivational stuff Rock, Thanks for lettin me join in. I had a question for ya as well. I always used a hex bar to deadlift in highschool and still do today. I put up around 500 when I was on point. Is there a huge difference between the hex and barbell deads? Just curious. If barbells are harder then maybe I will switch and start over again. Be Easy, Peace~ Nick

Sgt Rock

Drop the hex....stay with the reg bar brother. I will write some more here in the next few days. Have to go get rehab on this torn adductor.....no worries...12 weeks I will be on the platform, with a new world record DL in my hands, knees locked, body erect, 3 white lights and a smile on my face.

Ok so I went to rehab today. I hate rehab...for real. So I went in...after 30 minutes of paperwork finally got in the doors. Sat for another 15...she asked if I wanted to sit up on the bed thing..I said um...I tore my adductor, how about the chair? She did know her stuff, tested hamstring and quad strength etc, seems its DEF the adductor, but Im in much better shape now than a week ago. She gave me 15 minutes of EMS which was worth the trip, 15 minutes of ice, and two gals massaging me for another 15. Bottom line my right foot is swelled up like a fat guy as the "waste" from the injury follows gravity. I have severe edema, walk with a limp....but the good news is...IM BAAAAAAAAAAACK!

Upper body went very well today, upper back on friday, I will be pulling again in less than two weeks! Thanks for those that supported me....more come.

Ok...so if you followed my log, you know my doctor diagnosed me with a badly torn adductor, cirippled me for over a week, couldnt walk, he gave me crutches which I "forgot" in his office. I tore it on March 3, and squatted two days ago reaching paralllel, and did some SLDL today up to 405 raw no chalk at the pansy gym, so I am BACK! Why did I rush it? To prove a point to myself, to make myself work harder, and because I had the itch to get back to real workouts, and to prove the docs wrong too. They stated 4 weeks til I could think about squatting or DLing heavy.....wrong answer.

Ok...so after a KILLER workout at the pansy gym today, it was a HOT 60 degrees up here, snow melting everywhere, and I had my windows open, listening too....you guessed it ...WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT...by T I. Minding my own business, doing about 10 over the posted speed limit, and this pickup starts riding my ass....so close I cant even see his headlights, so I "check him' which is SLAMMING on the brakes, but he keeps doing it...for about 12 miles, so I wave him in this parking lot, and I jump out of my car, Im wearing a black animal tank top. I get out before he does (thats key) and he gets out and nearly shits himself. I told him...."YOu have a fetish for riding my ass I see" He said he didnt, was sorry and got back in his truck. Morale of the story...I dont condone road rage whatsoever, but you NEVER KNOW who is in front or behind you...I could have been shot I guess, but I was really pissed off......so DONT DO WHAT I DID...I am only sharing the story with you. On a better note...I am back to taking UNIVERSALS MEAL REPLACEMENT SHAKES, strawberry, absolutely GREAT tasting. I love this stuff, and the LAVA as well, two supps that dont get much press, but are AWESOME. MOre later....keep pullin, stay animal.

Sgt Rock
03-29-07, 1:15 am
So I am back at it, one hundred percent. Being injured reminds me....DONT TAKE YOUR HEALTH FOR GRANTED, always remember that. If you can go 100 percent and are in good health, dont be a wussy....dont drag yourself in the gym, go there with a smile, be thankful you can go full throttle. I always try and find the good in everything, including being injured. It gave me a good rest and gave me time to really ponder my next 20 week cycle, ending with an 804 deadlift at 242. I had time to think about it....visualize, and now I want it more than ever. I couldnt walk, was bruised all down my leg, but I kept the faith, and became even more hungry for the 800 barrier, now I am unstoppable, GOD willing. If I can get to Vegas in one piece, in good health, I know I will be fully prepared to meet my goal, I have already done it in my head. Whatever your goal is, prepare....visualize.....and then do it.....and enjoy....then start over. More later.

More later.

I am so happy to hear your back Rock and the rest did your body good, AWESOME! I am looking foward to your posts and your amazing lifts. You Rock SGT Rock!

You know what, anyone who bumps TI is okay in MY book!

And Sgt. Rock, I got that 315x5, you told me to let you know - and I'm lettin' you know!

Here's a video of it if you're bored and want to take a peek. My lower back rolled up, I'm going to have to work a lot harder on my form but I'm getting to 405 once I get this form down! If you got any pointers I'd love to hear 'em.

Today I want to talk about motivation. It doesnt really where you get it, as long as you can harness it as a positive. The best motivation comes from inside. Today I want to talk about MUSIC and motivation. Music can bring out the RAGE inside, so often people get cliche and put in Pantera ( I like them...dont get me wrong) or some other really heavy song, I challenge you to find some REAL INNER MOTIVATION. I am listening to FIRE LAKE by BOB SEGAR.....are you laughing yet? Its ok.....go download it.....and give it a quick listen (this is the experiment to show you about motivation), listen about a third of the way through when it says " WHO WANTS TO BREAK THE NEWS ABOUT UNCLE JOE..YOU REMEMBER UNCLE JOE.....HE WAS THE ONE AFRAID TO CUT THE CAKE"

Think about that....."THE ONE AFRAID TO CUT THE CAKE"......He doesnt really mean that.....its someone afraid to do something he has never done, to do something that EVERYONE is going to see.....LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS ON STAGE....POSING ON STAGE......APPROACHING THAT GIRL YOU ARE AFRAID TO APPROACH........DONT BE AFRAID TO CUT THE CAKE...........now put that song on your ipod and tell me you found some INNER MOTIVATION....and that you know MORE about your MOTIVATION now....now head out to Fire Lake (the gym) and kick some ass......more later

Sgt. Rock, I'm having some deadlift trouble and though maybe you could lend some expirenced thoughts upon it. First and foremost don't laugh, i know my deadlift blows. I can do 500x2 raw with a belt and a little chalk. The thing is, when I get my suit on I can barely pull 485? I don't understand, I think it mostly that on my way up I tend to drift out away from my legs and don't pull up straight. I just don't know. Also I seem to be stuck at the 500 level and really want to kick it up, any ideas how to start blastin my way to a 600+ deadlift? Thank you for any information you could pass along.

I have a GMC Canyon, jet black, all leather, 4 door, chrome step ups, big stereo, its my pride and joy. I have a fetish for sunglasses, I have this great pair of Chanel shades I just bought. I was driving through the mountains to get to the gym. I was thnking about how much fucking pain it was to tear my pec the first time....I dont know why I was thinking about it, well I do....because I wanted to try some flat benching again. I tore it IN HALF...no not just a piece of it...I tore it IN HALF, it blew so bad it sounded like a paper bag popping, and it took out a good piece of my BICEP....yeah I tore my bicep benching. Then one year later, so I would match and keep perfect symmetry, I went ahead and tore the left one as well. AC DC....ITS A LONG WAY TO THE TOP IF YOU WANNA ROCK AND ROLL.....its my pre lift song, its blaring, the shades are tight, my beanie is over my eyes, I get to the final turn to the gym and these teenagers are chillin on the corner, they look at me. I am wearing a tank top, its about 45 degrees, they say "HEY ARE YOU THAT GUY........." yeah guys im that guy..come to the gym sometime and I will help you. I love the local kids in that town. I get to the gym.....empty. I flip the lights on, and put in my CD that I leave there, not many gyms you can do that with. First song....DMX..."YOU THINK ITS A GAME..YOU THINK ITS A FUCKING GAME....WHATS MY NAME?!" Fuck it..im getting on the bench, they said I never could, or would. I have done some close grips and boards but never dared to take any sort of weight full range. I take the bar....25 reps, no probs so far, just mental. So I take 135, sloooooooooow on the way down, almost touched and went up, next rep, I touched! I did about 20 more just like it! I did another 5x10 to get used to it. So whats my point? Any of you can do 135 5x10, but for me its a huge milestone, a step to get up to say.....315 5x10. Everyone has unique goals, what sets us apart is if we are willing to sacrafice to break the barriers, and are willing to help others reach their goals as well. Me personally.....I do both. Much more to come...are you still with me.....I cant hear you?

So I leave the house today in a sleeveless shirt, on the way to the gym around 4pm. Its freaking cold.....it seems to never end. I crank the heat up...and the stereo. I have a Poland Spring (from Maine) bottled water with me, open it up....crank up my newest mixed CD. The Sopranos theme is on there...im a big fan of that show. "MOM ALWAYS SAID I WAS THE CHOSEN ONE" Think about that....your mom always believed in you..or your dad.....whoever your authority figure was...maybe a coach or teacher....someone believed in you UNQUESTIONABLY.....so why doubt yourself? I thought about that on the way to the gym. I had many other things to do...but its gym day, i just wont miss it. No excuses. If you dont believe in yourself, no one else will....just tell me I CANT do something....try me. I was in a rage by the time I got there, I was thinking about all the people that doubted me in my life. On every rep at the end, I was shouting 'WHY" I was thinking WHY would anyone doubt me...WHY! I HAMMERED myself during this workout, maybe a bit too heavy on the volume but you only live one time, and Im real careful how often I go into gladiator mode. So todays Blue Collar Bad Ass Lesson...is DONT DOUBT YOURSELF...EVER! THE ONLY BARRIERS YOU HAVE ARE THE ONES YOU CHOOSE TO CREATE...I CHOOSE TO HAVE NONE.

a few days ago...that same guy comes up and says: "you know when you said 2 years ago when i saw you...you said 'getting buff'?...i never believed you until now"

When I was in Vegas, at the Nationals (a win....I will take it), I hung out with my boy from the USMC, hes about 5'9 330, lots of tats. We would go places and people would take pics, security guards would come up and say...if you guys want to steal anything go ahead, we wont stop you, people thought we were with the UFC, it was a fun time! I must admit I was a bit amused. When I go to the beach I hear lots of whispers, I find that a bit annoying...my point? I use BOTH as motivation in the gym, the haters cant walk in and hook grip 6 plates with no warmup, and the peeps taking the pics...thats a priviledge for the hard work, ITS OK TO GET A SWELLED HEAD.....FOR 15 SECONDS THAT IS...THEN ITS BACK TO BLUE COLLAR WORK. So I popped in the VHS tape, and watched it. I still recall all the dates and events of those 12 weeks, names and all. I remember how fearless we all were, how some arent with us anymore, but for those fucking 12 weeks we were unstoppable, we were brothers in every sense of the word, preparing for war. Everyday they told us that upon graduation we were going over to the Gulf War, we were ready, we welcomed it, good bad or otherwise. It was not an easy time, but together we made it, all of us. That is the motivation I am taking with me into the Cage in 2008, it all starts now....are you still with me? Whats your motivation?

SEMPER FIDELIS LEATHERNECKS...damn I have been slack, let me write a couple quick lines here...

I had dinner, buffet at the PALMS to be exact with my boy REV8ball, CSCS and close friend. We discussed alot of shit, but let me speak here on CNS, the new term for I DONT WANT TO DEADLIFT BECAUSE ITS TOO HARD FOR ME. Here are portions of our conversation

Back in the day, before designer drugs, bands, chains, circa max and supersuits were available, nearly every powerlifter pulled EVERY SINGLE WEEK......lets see...ANELLO, JOYCE, KUC, KENADY and on and on, many of the best pulled HEAVY, EVERY SINGLE WEEK....and lets do a quick check...THERE ARE FEWER GOOD PULLERS NOW....THEN THERE WERE THEN.......food for thought?

I read BEGINNERS in their logs talking about their CNS BEING FRIED SO I ONLY PULL ONCE EVERY 4 WEEKS...HORSESHIT!

What if I said my bench was so taxed that I would bench once a month? So why the deadlift? Because its HARD and equipment helps much less...thats why!

Granted....I dont pull as heavy as I did ten years ago, but I get some very heavy pulling in at least 3 times per month so long as I am healthy. Eddy Coan...ditto..

A good matrix for an advanced powerlifter could be:

week 1 heavy pulls off the deck for a triple, or a few triples, single every once in a while

week 2. pulls agains bands for 7x2 reps

week 3. racks pin 1 or 2 max triple or single

week 4. gms at most, no pulls

week 5. break week 1 record

week 6. up weight 5 percent from week 2, pull FAST

week 7 break record from 3 AND SO ON AND SO ON

My good friend TONY CAPRARI pulls EVERY 4TH DAY! Max sets of six one day and then max triples with all gear the next, YEAR ROUND! He pulled 683 at 165 AS A TEENAGER...DRUG TESTED..AND WON IPF, AND WABDL WORLDS! Tom Eiseman pulls MASSIVELY HEAVY 8 REP SETS weekly!!! 640x8!!! at 181 to boot!!

Now please dont use this as the gospel, NO SINGLE ROUTINE WORKS FOR EVERYONE...BUT OPEN YOUR EYES AND BE WILLING TO TRY NEW THINGS! There is a difference from being legitimately overtrained and just being lazy....THE SQUAT ALONE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR DEADLIFT!!

SEE YOU AT THE ARNOLD!

So I found my new song of the month....ALBATROSS BY CORROSION OF CONFORMITY

I posted a portion of this session in my log...here it is again, in slightly different words

I go to the GOLDS GYM, there are 4 and one on the way in this area, this is my first real session here, at this one, it is known as the POWERLIFTING Golds, there is also a kick ass MMA ring here, its a cool gym. I stride over to the power area, all the powerlifting shit is locked up...yeah, as in with chains. I eyeball a super nice DL bar, but locked up..so im a bit miffed....I find a crappy short bar, its thick...but its all I got. Oh..its DEADLIFT DAY...

I havent pulled heavy in a while, and conventional its been a very long while

So raw, hook, conventional..it DOES NOT GET MORE OLD SCHOOL

I put on ALBATROSS..AND HIT REPEAT ON MY IPOD

135X5 HOOK FEELS GOOD, ACTUALLY I FEEL NOTHING

225X3

315X1

405X1

ADD A BELT and TWO WHEELS

585X1 IT IS REALLY TOO EASY....Some of the MMA guys wander over now (SUPER COOl dudes I may add...we talked after)....I pay no mind, not til after, some other dudes mumbling...looking over, laughing....I grab another wheel, put it on...they dont laugh anymore....time to chalk the hands.....CRACK my hands together, ask GOD to give me strength and to not get hurt...its GAMETIME

675 OR 7 PLATES...HOOK, RAW

TOO EASY, IM GOING FOR A FUCKING TRIPLE, SHIT......I CATCH A GLANCE AT THE LEFT SIDE AND THE PLATE ALMOST SLIDES OFF...Im not going to put it on and resume..im NOT greedy, 675 hooked on a thick bar...be satisfied Rock..dont be GREEDY......I stop

No ones laughing

I go on to Romanians with 505x6 reps, with the hook...its BRUTAL to hold on that long....but it must be done, I MUST put on a better show in the Cage, and I am paying my dues, YOU....THE GUYS READING THIS...DEMAND THAT..AND DESERVE NOTHING LESS..

I finish with 45 degree back raises with 45 behind my head, and heavy abs, heavy db shrugs,...Im on schedule, and will be ready...........Sgt Rock.......in the Cage......its on, stay tuned for more........

I never realized how strong dead lifts actually make you. They are useful in everyday life and really give you functional strength. In my gym only four or five people including me do deads. I am glad you support them with much zeal. Great thread and I really like the title. Good luck on your endeavors.

Working seven days a week, nights, 9- 12 hours a shot, it sucks....but you have to train. You have to be creative, you have to...if you want to be a champion, you must TRAIN TO WIN. I have a very lucrative job in a nightclub in what is known as the top hotel in North America, thats right I am lucky. You can imagine the employee dining area serves TOP food. I go in before shift, and have a full meal, work all night, and hammer down a full breakfast in the dining area before driving home and going to bed, this isnt counting the protein shake I consume on the way to the club. I already have 150 grams or so of protein right there, over half what I really need. As for training, I will eventually have 3 full days off per week, each day will be a training day. On the fourth day (thursday)I will train as I dont have to go in until the evening....there is my four training days, of course sometimes I switch them up but you can see with some creativity and thought you can always fit your training in, as well as your meals. Make it work, you must take control, and make it happen.

On my soundtrack in the Cage this year, one song will be One in a Million by G and R, the song in itself is NOT intended to offend anyone, just a song about life on the West Coast in Axl Roses eyes. Half of our staff is battling it. After whacking myself with an assortment of cold medicines, I promptly passed our for 10 hours or so. I DRAGGED myself into the gym. On the way in I was thinking "What am I doing?" the answer came in loud and clear. There were two dudes having a conversation in the parking lot. They were leaving the gym. I read your post on the hook grip and just want to make sure I understand what it is. Its pretty much the opposite of the over under grip?? both hands are over? I just want to make sure so I can try it because I have a bad arm. I hit you up on myspace a while back because I tore my bicep too a while back. I loved deadlifting and worked up to 500lbs for one rep max. Weird I tore my bicep curling a 20lb dumbell. Makes no sense. Anyhow, want to get back into deads and my arm feels great. Only thing is when I put 135 on the bar and start doing a few reps I feel it pull a little on my arm. Its probably nothing and I got the ok from the doc just wondered how you got back up in weight so fast. Maybe its just in my head I'm not sure. All I know is I miss heavy deadlifting and I don't want my arm to fall apart again. Let me know about the hook and any info I can soak up. Thanks rock and hope you can shake the flu bug soon!!

Let me know how it works out brotha. Please remember this as well, there is no documented case studies (that I have ever even heard of) of someone re tearing a bicep that was fixed properly by surgery, in other words it is even BETTER than what nature produced. There have also been ZERO documented cases of bicep tears with an OVERHAND grip, its ALWAYS the underhand on the DL that tears. With that being said, the hook grip is JUST what the doctor ordered. Call your ortho and tell him about the hook grip, he will be STOKED.

I still am starting back into it very slowly, but this is definately the way to go. Thank you for all the info. Especially about the case study on bicep tears... that really boosted my confidence. I needed to hear that from someone who had a similar injury and who also is a deadlift addict too. lol. It means alot and I feel I can bump up my training now with the hook grip. By the way I work in the hospital and see my ortho from time to time so I will definately tell him about it. He is a lifter, but has more of a runners build. Very nice guy and good doctor. Thanks again and looking forward to seeing you pull at the arnold!!

Good job brother! Find the most eperienced ortho surgeon in there, and see if he can find ANY CASE of the overhand arm tearing the bicep in the dl, there simply arent any. I think I'm gonna try and fly in on Thurs this year to get settled in and actually spend the whole day Friday. Havn't got to do that yet, I usually fly in Friday morning and miss half of the day. But yeah man, it will be good to see everyone again and hopefully everyone is bigger and better this year!

Quick question 'bout the hook Rock, when you decided to pull this way for good... did you totally restart training. I mean, going back down to maybe 225 to pull for form and teach your body this is the only way for pulling... mechanics wise?

Sgt Rock
01-24-08, 2:47 pm
That is a GOOD question. Believe it or not...to some extent the hook is like riding a bike. At this moment I am using it sumo style, conventional I am not, but its always there. With that being said, when I first started using it, I tried with 135 and 225 and was like SCREW THIS. Next workout I really decided to just DO IT. I went to 605 and then stayed with it, and just sucked up the pain. I reccomend starting light but taking big jumps to get up to your big weights. Try doing reps of 5 to really get used to it, and hold the last one at the top. Also try the hook on your SLDL and shrugs.

Good deal. Yeah, I just started pulling with hooks cause I my shoulder strains in a weird way all the suddon... plus my elbow constantly hurt. So I tried it one day and I loved the way I could feel it in my back, where I'm Supposed to! So I've started out warming up really good trying to train myself mechanics wise then I go for real in my working sets. Yep, doing sets of 5 on week... then up to 8-12 on heavy squat day the next. Just started doing it for shrungs as well, I do 4 sets of 10 reps with hook grip, over/under one way and then switch for the last. Prob just gonna go with hook though. Thanks bra!

Ok so I was reading my boy Vinnys log, and he gave a "day in the life" scenario many, many times....Some think we lead real exciting lives, but remember, we are all Blue Collar Bad Asses and actually have jobs, so most would find us fairly normal. Here is a typical work day in my life...yesterday for instance:

Woke up 11am, now the reason I wake up so late is I work long nights, so I sleep in when I can, it may be earlier or later, I have no set time on this one

1130am

3 eggs
2 whole wheat toast with butter
2 large glasses of OJ
1 Coffee
2 scoops whey protein with anything in it, pb etc

130pm

Same shake

2pm
Met for lunch, just had the Fruit cup, and 1 coffee

3pm Large serving of Spicy Chicken from Teryiaki Madness with 2 scoops rice, one diet soda, sometimes regular soda

4pm train

515pm

Same Chicken meal

630pm

Same shake

715 Pm

Free meal in the top hotel in the country (employee dining area is OFF THE CHAIN)

I was already stuffed, but managed one small steak, and a bowl of soft serve ice cream
2 glasses of milk and 4 glasses of Powerade

worked til 6am in Night Club

Employee dining:

6am
large cheese omlette
2 toasts with butter
fruit cup
2 glasses of juice
1 glass milk

Bed at 7am

That is typical. I was hesitant to post this as I dont ADVOCATE eating like this for EVERYONE. I am trying to gain weight, and it is super hard for me. I am adding in Tuna Sandwich meals and almonds as we speak. I get my carbs, protein, and not as much fat as you may believe, and its not as difficult as you may have thought before I hope.

My cholesterol is tested at least twice yearly, and my abs are always visible. I do ZERO cardio. PLease don't use this as an excuse if this doesnt fit your metabolism, but its how I PERSONALLY eat. I eat pies frequently, but dont eat super amounts of desserts. Cookies and whoopie pies (its an east coast thing) are my favs....I live life and enjoy things in moderation. Keep in mind, I have a fanatic pace in the gym after my main lift of the day.
Supps are 1-2 animal paks per day, glutamine, different types of Universal proteins for my shakes, Jointment, sometimes creatine.

Improvise...adapt...overcome. You can write the perfect workout on paper but it may not be reality, you have to go with what you need at that MOMENT. I had some business to take care of today, so I lost my only chance to get some fellow powerlifters to help me out with my gear today. This is my last chance at pulling with gear before my next show, heavy at least. So rather than whine, I went to the nearby Golds, which has Hexagon PLATES by the way. I brought my own DL bar with me. I put my Ipod on, pulled my animal beanie over my eyes and walked in. Due to some tremendous trama to my knees I am having to pull sumo, after the whole cycle was conventional, shit happens. One plate, two plates, three plates, four plates, five plates, six plates...now the people talking smack were all gathered around. Seven plates...no freaking problems, it was too easy. Its hard to pull reps with those plates as it rarely gets put back straight. Oh...it was hook grip. 675 with a slippery floor, hook grip, and belt only, so I won this battle. Then hammered out 405 for two hard sets off a 45 plate, no belt, with the hook and did some assistance, grabbed my bar.....and left, with my ipod on..and my animal beanie over my eyes, my body covered in chalk.......intensity. Bodyweight 230 and lean.

So I have had the usual issues pre contest that most seasoned plers have, injuries, work, gear issues...you name it. Its how you adapt that makes you a champion.

Last week I ZAPPED 675 sumo with a belt, after pulling the entire cycle conventional. My knees just cant take that beating conventional so I switched it up.

Thursday I warmed up to 605 raw sumo, easy, then I loaded well over 700 with my suit, and YARDED IT up so fast I feel backwards, bashed my head, forget to let go of the hook grip, both hands bleeding and the weight glanced off my legs on the way down, gashing my shin open. SO I lay flat on my back....huge audience, feeling pretty crappy. Got some help getting up, told them to straighten the bar.....stepped back, and ZAPPED IT conventional....all without taking my belt off or taking my suit off...do I reccomend this? Heck no! Am I ready for the Expo and the Cage...heck yea!

Best lifter in the open division, first in the 242 open as well. I broke the submaster national record with 729. I opened with 628 hook grip, jumped to 705 then did the record leaving something in the tank for the Arnold. I was happy with my performance.

What do I do to get ready for the show? Many have asked. I went 3 for 3 at the fit expo on sunday so my soreness isnt as bad as if I missed a rep. I took off through tuesday. Wednesday was upper body. Thursday is squats light with medium good mornings. Friday is upper back heavy, but mostly machines. Saturday is delts and arms, sunday rest. Monday light squats, tuesday upper back machines, wednesday chest delts and arms light. Abs trained 3-4 times in there heavy as well.

To rip up some fucking heavy weights. Everyone has a different flavor, or we would merely have a universal one size fits all song to lift to. Listen CLOSELY to the lyrics to this one:

http://www.cfpweb.com/oneband.asp?target=4

Bottom song......Jay Z vs Toto Change Africa

Now I admit, we have two of the top rated DJs in the country in the club I work at, and they BOTH tell me this remix absolutely RIPS....I have to agree. When they play it at the club they launch the snow from the celings and the Cristal Champagne comes out.....then it rains shortly thereafter....believe it. ITs easy to just say PANTERA GETS ME GOING....Im a bit more cerebral in my motivation, a song like this with these types of lyrics gets me going. The bounce is back.....the champ is back!

Tell me what you think............Hurry boy its waiting there for you......

So it is TWO DAYS before I take the long journey to the Superbowl, the Mecca, in Columbus Ohio. The thoughts of the events consume me. I can picture it, I can smell it, I hear it, and I can feel it. I wish everyone could experience what it is like to come down the escalator in full Animal gear to enter the expo, to see the thousands of fans waiting in line stop and turn around, and run up and say "Hey...there are the Animal guys!" It is a feeling like no other. We animals in uniform are a reflection of YOU the fans, the legion, blue collar work, and what is RIGHT about training and competing, and all that is honorable in our not so mainstream lives. See you in the CAGE.

So what the heck do we do the night before? Two guys asked me....as you all know, Im a blue collar guy, so nothing too frilly. I went into the HEART of the ghetto here, somewhere that I actually enjoy going, its a different vibe. I went to the Stacy Adams outlet and bought some fresh new threads. I spent my morning running errands. I ate some good meals, had a nap....now onto the gym later this evening, finish packing. Trying to keep my mind off the mayhem that starts soon......trying.
