I have respect for Derek Poundstone but is he really the STRONGEST man in america? I mean there are stronger guys, such as ronnie coleman who can deadlift 800x2 when derek can do only 1 rep...etc

Strongman is a whole nother realm. There's so much that can be debated about who the strongest man is. Pudzianowski is 5 time champion in Strongman, but one would like to see what he would do in a Powerlifting meet.

Brian Siders competed this past Strongman comp, and he is one of the top powerlifters in the country, but he had a very poor showing. All because the training is a lot different than that of powerlifting.

Two different animals in terms of strength sports.

Just watched a WSM meet in Denver, on tv. Poundstone lifted a cage of barells, increasing through 7 straight reps to 800lb. Not too shabby when also taking into account the truck pull, fingers relay and barrell/sandbag events he'd done the same day.

Strongman is a different game, taking endurance & strength to another level.

I would gladly wager that Poundstone is the best American strongman right now. I was impressed by Brian Shaw in the 08 WSM, though. And my man Kevin Nee is the future, IMHO.

Yes, I would say Poundstone is the best in America right now. Remember, he is still young and has time on his side for getting stronger. Oh, and he has deadlifted more than 800 pounds. But dont forget about Phil Pfister and Travis Ortmier...and there are a few others that could win on any day. Lots of strong guys out there to say one of them is hands down at the top...

Ronnie Coleman would not last 10 min in an elite level strongman competition, if that. Look at how Brian Siders did this year to see how well crossover athletes who dont train for it do.

I agree. I thought Shaw did fantastic, and I am now a fan of that guy. Always like watching Nee. I think he just had a really tough qualifying group to get through. Plus the Bicep tear earlier this year...he'll be there next year.

Yea travis ortmier is the texas strongman and he is a fuckin beast! You need to see his youtube videos. Yea true..derek poundstone is still young, I failed to reconsider.

Also is phil pfister the same guy who overhead pressed 185 lbs with one arm when he was younger or was that someone else?

What about this guy. Why canrt he be worlds strongest man lol

u see most strongman struggling with overhead pressing 400 lbs even with a leg drive.

This guy does easy 6 reps seated with 400 lbs. All shoulder power..

Derek poundstone has deadlifted over 900 for the record. He also had ran a rack starting at 585 and built up to 800 in just a matter of a few seconds. No rest, just had to keep picking it up.

And by the way, seated overhead press is a totally different animal then standing overhead press. Seated overhead i can rep out 245. Give me the same weight standing and i cant get it once.

Idk about this decision. I have nothing but huge respect for J-Rock, but most strongman guys are over 6 foot atleast. J-Rock might have problems with some of the tall man events like fingal fingers. I know he has done strongman though cuz he has pics of it on myspace. but i thought he just did regional shows.

Strongman is a different game, taking endurance & strength to another level.

Bingo.

Currently, there are three "official" ways to get the title "World's Stongest Man:"
1. Post the highest total of the two lifts in a sanctioned weightlifting event.
2. Post the highest total of the three lifts in a sanctioned powerlifting event.
3. Win a WSM event.

Do any one (or more!) of those, and you get a nice little certificate....

Yea, the shorter guys (even 6ft can be deemed small in the field) have a harder time with the fingals, keg toss, atlas stones on the higher platforms. But then they can take advantage on the dead/squat variations. The axl press is a fucker for anyone with small hands, as the bar has the girth of a drinks can, bastard getting it off the floor after x amount of reps.

Oh i know the dead/squat events in strongman are a blessing for shorter guys. No where near as far to go as someone who is 6'8 to lock out.

Poundstone and Nee are the future of American strongmen. Poundstone is from my neck of the woods and is a cop in my fiance's hometown. One of the major bodybuilding publications had a feature on him last month.
Saw Nee and Pudzianowski at a WSM qualifier about a year ago. Nee impressed me and made me want to train that much harder.

Seeing Nee easily deadlifting 900 lbs just blew me away...and hes only 21

by the times hes 30 he'll probably be pulling 1400 lbs

I wasn't but I was there the day he did the 1100 yoke and I'm in the background again on the 950 frame carry. Thanks for the props bro, I personally think I look pretty skinny considering I'm wearing a size too small n sweatshirt there and I'm the only sub-250 pounder in the crew. Where's your log man? One of my old faves.

Idk, ill see about starting one up again before long. My life is a bunch of random events at the moment. Work never gives me the same schedule so i cant plan a steady program.

this post is makeing me fucking mad
a.poundstone is by far not the best deadlifter in strong man.
b.coleman is on steriods.
c.most men who have trained for as long as coleman can probably dl 800lb
d.coleman could not last 2 events in a strong man comp.
the list goes on and on.cheak this before being inspired by a body builder.i could post a thosand vids to show coleman is nothing in the field.

That is some serious back strength and stomach strength being able to rest the bar there, and then move it up to your shoulders.

I thought I was cleaning and pressing with a thick bar, mine is only as thick as a sqaut bar.

Would he have cleaned it better had he not used the staggered grip?

No, that bar on top of being 2.5-3 inches thick has no knurling on it whatsoever so it's impossible to hold anything appreciably heavy with the double overhead grip, let alone try to move something heavy explosively.

found this one for you alought not 405lb or a press still managed the normal grip,
i suppose it would make his movement and arm strenght better training with a thick bar.

Notice how much easier the mixed grip clean is for him than the double overhand. He's only working the double overhand grip for extra grip work. These days very few, except for maybe a very select few who have top 5 in the world hand strength, all axle clean with a mixed grip.
