View Full Version : Illusions - Tips and Tricks to Posing
In another thread someone asked why bodybuilders tuck their thumbs in when they make a fist and the consensus was that it's part of an illusion to make the biceps look bigger.
My question is what other kinds of "illusions" do bodybuilders take advantage of while posing?

use the lighting to your advantage
Lighting, your coloring, the angles of your poses...it all factors into presentation. You can have all the muscle in the world, but when you stand on that stage, posing can make or break you. Its an art form in itself.
Arnold used to use one of the most dramatic illusions in posing, the lost art of executing the awe inspiring stomach vacuum.
The wider your shoulders, the smaller your waist appears.
Keeping your feet together keep the illusion of the V-taper on Abs and most muscular poses.

Another tip for making your biceps look larger when posing is to hold them a little higher than your shoulders in a double bi shot.

Rise up on your calves EVER SO SLIGHTLY. Move your body towards the judges EVER SO SLIGHTLY during quarter turns and lean back a little during lat spreads to give the illusion of more thickness.
Pressing your hidden leg against the inside of your quad for side chest poses. Gives you a little more quad width.
