I'm a damn proud American, but something that I'm pissed over is is how we are now the number 1 unhealthiest nation on earth. Everywhere I go it seems, there are always people in terrible shape who look like total slobs and have never tried to better themselves and instead spend their time stuffin their faces with Micky D's and Taco Bell. What has to be done to change this crap? I can't stand seeing this every day.
I figure that we as bodybuilders are the first line of defense against this problem, but there aren't enough of us to truely influence change around here. What can be done to make people wake up to see what they're doin to themselves and make a commitment to be part of the solution, and not the problem.

Nothing is gonna help with the obesity...
its now a "disease."
thats the excuse you get.. "oh, i'm fat cuz its a disease" or "my genetics cause me to be fat." bla bla bla... #### that...
the only thing GENETIC is your metabolism... just like guns don't kill people.. your metabolism doesn't make you fat... you either have to pull the trigger, or stuff your fat face with food...
hell, everything is solved by some kind of pill or shot these days...
they'll come up w/ some kind of med to make people thin...

Sorry but human nature trumps the human will in most cases- thats what makes us as bodybuilders so rare and what gives our physiques such prestige. Human nature is to eat as much as possible so to accumulate energy reserves (ie fat tissue) so we could survive famines. Theres no famines going on in western societies so people just keep getting fatter. We as bodybuilders overcome this through our will, others just dont have it in them. Human nature is to be lazy, so as to save energy for important things like chasing down food sources. No one these days hunts for food in the west. As bodybuilders we sure aint lazy. human nature is to avoid pain at all costs. Training comes with its fair share of agony, most of it good pain. The reality is people aint evolved and the world around us has. I remember a good quote i read when i first started "bodybuilding is the evolution of one man at a time", we should be bloody proud of this. And as G Diesel pointed out in 'entry 95' we cant carry people thru life, we can show them the road but they need the will to walk it.

I think the only way to fix this is to start with the schools. Get rid of GYM class, and make it a physical education class. Make taking part in a sport, ANY sport, a requirement to pass to the next grade. We all remember gym class when we were in school.. half the class actually got involved in what was going on. The other half hid in the back of the gym, hid in the locker locker room, etc.
I know certain people aren't going to like certain sports, thats fine. By the time kids are out of elementary school they should have an idea of what sports they like and what they don't. Put them in a class that is geared toward there types of sports. Put the runners together, the lifters together, etc... Get everyone involved, doing something. Add this to the required sport participation, and maybe we'll start to see this idea of keeping in shape and training continue into adult life.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but just maybe we can make sure the young pups can learn from our mistakes. (or at least the mistake of the fat body buying his two dozen jelly filled every morning.)
BS products that are supposedly miracles for fitness are also a huge part of the problem, I rambled on about it in one of the other posts
I think the media has begun a small change here. Such as Pros Vs Joe's and Biggest Loser. B.L. is really taking a foot hold, showing people they can do it. So many people watch "reality" tv so it's getting out to the larger population. I hear it getting yacked about around town often. I'd like to see more bodybuilding and fitness commercials with normal Joe's even keeping it real. Or reality shows with guys like us or even a show with the pros BBr's but with some story line and real world drama that'll suck the couch potatoes in. I think the media could build alot of awareness into what we do. It's a slow start but it's happening we just gotta' show our support and watch those shows and spread the word as much as possible. Real estate and the stock market are good examples, someone hears something and tells a buddy and on lookers hear it too, pretty soon just on word of mouth alone real estate sales slow while % are still the same and the stock market has seen dips and rises based on "gossip"! So it works both ways, talk about working, new fitness shows and the drama their, or about your new found success with what you're doing and it's catchy. I jaw jack all the time about this stuff and it works!

I think alot of the problem has to do with the fact that people don't realize that sometimes small changes can make big differences. I mean, not everyone can be an animal, nor does everyone want to be, which is fine. But, that's not to say that everyone can't be healthy and/or in shape, which pretty much everyone can be (barring legitimate medical reasons to the contrary). In most cases, all it would take for most people to do this would be some small, but significant changes. In the grand scheme of things, eating healthier and getting some exercise are small changes. Yes, it will be hard at times. Yes, it will take some sacrifice and dedication. However, if one sets realistic goals, looks at progress incrementally (as opposed to focusing on the final result) and is determined, they can succeed. I truly believe this. But, I think for alot of people, they think that it's going to be impossible for them to get thin or get in shape or whatever. They set unrealistic goals, get discouraged when they don't lose five pounds in one week, and give in to temptation without much hesitation. Discouraged, they give up and stop trying, which is a damn shame.

I'm a german citizen, and proud of it. I also believe that America is the greatest country in the world. The problem is that too many people take their life and freedom for granted. There is no one I have more respect for than a soldier that puts their life on the line for me. I have been to poor countries where children are starving in the streets. Stuff like that always keeps my ass working hard at what I do, because I know that I could have been born in a different place, or family.

It would be great if the "new years resolution" crowd at the gym would actually commit to their goals and stick with it instead of giving themselves a false sense of hope for the first 2-3 weeks of the year. It would be great to get kids into more fitness/sports and instilling them with the knowledge of clean eating early on, also with a warning of the consequences of not following that.
The fast food epidemic runs rapid in our society. Worst part is, all the execs at Micky D's and BK don't care about feeding and energizing the public, its all about the dough. BK cant stand Micky D's Big Macs, so they come out with those shitty new "stackers" with 4 beef patties and loads of cheese, bacon and mayo, which they know people just can't resist. It's us that are able to look at that without so much as a second glance (except maybe on cheat days). Doughnuts, cake, pie, chips, and other crap hasn't looked the least bit appealing to me in years. It's becuase I have risen above that temptation and have the mindset passing them in the store getting my egg whites and chicken that they look better rotting on the shelves than on my abs. Somethings gotta be done to wake other people up to those sad but true facts that we know about, but actually apply them to their daily lives as we do.

gym class is a joke these days, first they got rid of the mile run, and replaced it with "step test". me and my friend both seniors(the only serious lifters at school) are interns for 10th grade PE 4th period, and the teacher is in his 50's and is old school, he must follow the district fitness and health programs, but when they fuck up when they have a sub, he lets us have control. we work them the way PE was 30 years ago, yelling, cursing, pushups, running, crunches, jumping jacks, hard stuff they never knew exsisted, of course they hate us, we love it though. best class all day.

I too am worried about my nation, but on the other hand,.... I'll rather my daugther be fat, then not being able to walk the streets without being killed are assaulted cause she doesn't have her face covered or she's not walking six steps behind a man. I'll take the less of the two evils.

I've always wanted to start up some sort of healthy fast food place. I don't know why but they just don't exist. I'd love to hit a drive through for a quick protien shake with oats in it rather than order a chicken sandwich with no cheese or mayo because it's the only thing I can get that's sorta healthy.
The gym has a juice bar but they want $5 for a 2 scoop shake with ice. I know for a fact it costs them .50 for the protein as I buy the same stuff off the internet.
As a whole people say the US is fat but everyone around me is in decent shape. Maybe I work in one of those little heathy bubbles or something.
Sadly,
I dont think it is ever going to change, like was said before, obesity is now the #1 disease in America. It also happens to be one of the fastest growing markets, throw out a bottle of bleach with claims of ridding 5 pounds in 1 bottle, and some asshole will drink it, in fact thousands of them probably would!
it is simply the culture of people who are A. comfortable with their situation and laziness sets in or B. people overstressing and spending all their time working, this country has lost the sense of leisure time, or taking time for yourself.
it is simple, everyone in here takes time out of their day to eat right, to train right and its hard! The only real accomplishment is looking in the mirror and saying that you are proud of yourself, some people want o work 27hours a day to make money to buy a nice looking bride and tons of cosmetic surgery, it all comes down to priorities, and the animals in attendance here are the ones who will win, because when we are all older, we will know that we took the time to sculpt ourselves, and enjoyed it, we didnt spend too much time stressing in a cubicle.
Just take that into consideration, leisure time and what you do with it. The fast-paced culture wont change until societies priorities do. Sorry to add my long-winded two cents but thats just my opinion....
Late,
x
there are 3 things in this country that will never change as long as we are a democracy.
1. Drugs
2. Obesity
3. Self-segregation
these three things will continue to be the major contributing factors to the crippling our great nation. people are unwilling to help themselves. its just how it is. the only problem is, we allow our citizens to constantly play the victim and not be held responsible for their actions. anyone in our country who continue to do nothing but complain about their problems will never succeed. unfortunately that is what our country has been raised to do. but the strong need the weak to feed on and the weak need the strong for protection. my friends, we have forced evolution and positive progress to a screeching halt. and THAT is the only downside of democracy. if you let the average individual think for themselves they will eventually become the reason for their own demise.
There is definitely a trickle down effect here..... It starts with the parents. Nowadays no one will cook, it's always the quickest way out which is fast food. Millions of people are emotional eaters which honestly is a physiological problem and not a will power problem. Many eat to get the satisfaction for temporary relief. This is taught by what people are experiencing. yes this wasn't true many years ago, but people are dealing with more now. The unending convience of fast food and fat is addicting and it has physical effects on your body, mood, etc.. if you quit eating these things cold turkey.
It would be great if the "new years resolution" crowd at the gym would actually commit to their goals and stick with it instead of giving themselves a false sense of hope for the first 2-3 weeks of the year.
I agree and disagree. I love seeing people go in and lift, but when they start to strip my bars and do some bullshit rotation exercizes, then I get pissed and wish them to leave. Maybe I'm ignorant, but if your going to be in a weight room, then lift by God.

yeah i agree definantly...i think the biggest problem is that most people dont know how to become healthy and most dont have what it takes to go through with it...
so yeah i dont see anything changing until something drastic starts happening and then its too late...

true, unfortunately. there are way too many diet books/plans out there that can really screw with peoples minds on which is or which isn't the right way to get back into shape. confused, the people ponder it over a pile of cheeseburgers and the cycle continues. as for those who don't think they have what it takes, i think that they outta remember that everyone had to start somewhere. you see people with their before/after pics, you think that would be inspiration enough to say "hey, i think i can acutally do this!". hopefully more people will develop that mindset.

yopu cant help those who dont want to be helped. Im 6 feet tall, 195 lbs at 12% bodyfat. I believe in healthy living. I believe if your not healthy on the inside you cant be healthy on the outside. my brother on the other hand is 5 feet 11 inches at 350 something lbs. All he does is eat junk and drink., and never works out. He has the famous excuse," life isnt long so enjoy it while you can". But what he doesnt realize is that unhealthy fat people dont just die, they suffer for years before they die.

I just want to make sure this gets heard...
OBESITY is NOT A DISEASE!!!
As far as i'm concerned, you can't catch fatness from someone... you can pick up their eating habits though ;)
If we label it a disease.. it will get treated like a disease... and thats definitely not the best option all the time.
I do agree that so many of us here are way out of shape...but I also think the media has a field day with certin subjects. Its human nature to blow staying in shape off...and when you look at the average american...yep...heavy...no time to cook...working 60 hour week..fast fooding it....its a nasty cycle. I had a 23 year lay off from training...not all unhealthy...lots due to family and job...but its easy to fall into the trap....but when we emerge and get back to the gym...we find ourselves...and I found myself...and doing better than ever. Yea...its something to see how this all happens...even my girlfriend somtimes wants to blow off the gym....and go shopping....or go out to eat....and just tonight she said...Im not going to work out tonight...comon honey...lets go to the mall...well...my first responce was.....baby....I train arms.....Ill super and giant set...and get out in 30 mins....neat thing here is when I was done...got a super friggen pump...and when we were walking arm in arm at the mall...she looked at me and said.....baby...your body feels so strong...I love what you have done in the gym...and all I can say is....its hard work...and I cant live without it at this point.....so....its all good...

i am sick and tired of the "obese" people trying to claim it as a medical disorder, get off your ass and fucking do something about it. these assholes demand Handicapped stickers for their cars so they dont have to walk as far as everyone else....fuck that shit, they should have to park in the BACK of the lot to get the extra exercise. i see this shit on a daily basis, we are the offices that determine wether or not you are to get the assistance...and a lot of people are now being denied because of their weight...and im not talking about the fat ppl. they are getting the food assistance faster than the REALLY skinny people, or even the average size people.
it is really ridiculous.

fuck the physical education programs that are in schools now. they need to incorporate bodybuilding techniques into their programs (especially the football workouts...pussies). if people trained like everyone else in this forum, like animals, obesity would disapear among high school students. fuck all the drivers ed teachers that think they are coaches, get lee priest in there. hed eat those kids.

I also think parents who let there kids become obese should be able to be charged with child abuse.
Fact is, things won't change unless you force people to. Until it benefits people in the pocketbooks or in social standing, they will not change. Look at SUVs, when gas got jacked up and gas-guzler taxes were implimented, people started buying fuel efficient cars because it benfited them in the pocketbook. Right now, it is much more expensive to eat our kind of diet weekly than buying crap food. Since crap food tastes better and is cheaper, of course people will eat it. Until the tabels turn to where healthy food is much cheaper than bad food, people will continue to consume it. Also, look at smoking for another example. There are several reasons why smoking is on the way out. First, of course, the extensive studies and medical research to prove how bad it is for you, but trust me, that is not enough by itself because that already exists for bad foods. The studies for healthy food and exercise are also contantly barraged by unhealthy "lose weight" diets that are impossible to live with or magic "get it now without any work" pills or schemes. Second, the death warning put on the package of cigs is a "in your face" reminder that this crap kills you. This needs to be done because way too often people want to forget how bad something is for them if it brings them pleasure, but if you put a huge reminder in their face, they can't ignore it. If you start putting health warning messeges on crap food saying "this stuff kills you", people might think twice and put it down. Lastly, smoking has now become a topic where it is socially acceptable to heckle people about. This constant barrage from people everywhere incuding family, friends, and random people can really motivate people to change their ways. Basically, it is another way of giving them an in your face message of "you are killing yourself". This is a way also of saying that you basically think less of the person and it effecively lowers their social standing or reputation. Anymore, it is socially acceptable to be fat just because everyone else is. If you call someone fat, they can say, "well at least I am not as fat as that guy over there". People don't want to own up for the bad choices they make and only want to make excuses.
Another way which will be difficult to impliment will be laws regulating how bad food can be for you, but I don't think they will get passed. We are seeing the no trans-fats laws start up, but I don't think unhealty foods will ever be completely regulated by laws.
These are the basic steps that I could see possibly working when combnied. Of course, there are many more possible ways that "could" work or "would" work, but these are the most viable in my mind.
1. Make unhealthy food extremely expensive and finacially unwise
2. Put warning messages on all bad foods like cigs and constantly remind people how bad the crap is for them in adds and TV
3. Make it socially unacceptable to be overweight or obese

about phys ed..... I hate phys ed. I am in the 1% in high school, that is a bodybuilder, They try to make me run 3 miles, becuase everyone around me is fat and out of shape, I explained to them that im bulking, so i will not run 3 miles.... They also tried to ban eating at recess....Once again i explained that i had to eat during recess, and fat people shouldnt eat.... This country digusts me now.... I feel somewhat aboce the average american...I dont consider these obese cows to be my fellow countrymen..... those are the ppl that needs to be body builders 500 pounds wide shoulders big boneded, those are the genetics needed to be olympia thats what i think
I saw somthin on tv the other day that blew me away. It was a special on 4 "super morbidly obese" people weighing in as much as 800 lbs. While they sat there and moaned about how fat they were, at the same time they were shoving food in their mouths. It was calculated that they ate about 14000 calories and 700 grams of fat a day. One guy spent $14000 a year on fuckin chocolate bars - ill say that again for those who didn't get it the first time - thats $14,000 dollars a year on CHOCOLATE BARS ALONE. It showed his family cookin and bringin him all that shitty food and laughin about how much he puts away in a single day while doing nothin to stop it - they outta be arrested. At least 1 of the 4 people was from England, one less embarassment to the US.
Shit, we should be like china, you know where they have mandatory exercises (like push-ups and jumping jacks) DURING work....i mean shit thats a START right?

Some, I cant speak for all, but some just dont have the dedication or will power to do what we do. They feel inferior and intimedated. My brother is 9 years older than me, and at least 40 lbs on me, but has less than half the strength. So for x-mas I got him a membership to my gym, figured he could go with me and get him in some kind of shape. He quit after 2 months of going steady and making gains. He was always "too tired" or some other bs. Either way, everytime we went he always was so damn busy comparing himself to the other lifters that he never felt comfortable, even though no one gave a shit about him, they just did there own thing.
Either way the point im trying to make is that they feel like they dont have a chance. I know they have a chance, but they have convinced themselves there is no hope, that no matter how hard they try they will never look like us. They dont understand that we had to start somewhere as well, that these bodies wernt just handed to us. They see us, and want to be us in onework out, and when that doesnt happen they just say fuck it.

I am bumping this thread because of a TV show that I saw tonight....Shaq took 6 middle school kids and is trying to help them change their lives and become thin..these kids are very heavy, one almost clocks in as much as me...not cool...they are getting the same help that Shaq is getting, his trainer, his nuteroinist...I feel that he really cares for these kids and wants them to suceed...The challenges that he is encountering is mind blowing, some from the parents, tons from the kids, but the schools...No PE? what the fuck...we have turned the future of the nation in to dollar signs and they are falling through the cracks...
It truly blows my mind that these kids were allowed to get so big...a 300# 14 year old? We, as a nation need to fallow Shaq's example and try to figure out what can be done to save the kids...cause soon they will be fat adults, having fat kids and the cycle will spin out of control....

Now call me a left wing softie, but I dont like the way this topic is heading. I'd say that we are probably within the top 5% of fittest people on planet earth. We have drive, determination, passion and work ethic that the other 95% of the world could not even fathom.
They are never, ever going to be anywhere near as fit/big/strong/lean as us and as far as im concerned, thats OK. Who cares if someone is fat, or obese, or scrawny, or doesn't train with much intensity in the gym? who cares? leave them to it. Each to their own. Dont let it bother you. Take pride in the fact that you train hard and look after your body and forget about everyone else.
Im sure there are as many self made millionaries as bbs in the world. Im certainly not a millionaire. Would it be right for a millionaires forum to go on about how much they hate 'lazy poor people' who cant be bothered busting their ass and making themselves a fortune? Should poor people be sent to boot camps to learn business skills and money making techniques? Of course not.
We'll never make millions because we haven't got the right MENTALITY do get rich.Very few people have. just like very few people have mentalty to become bodybuilders.

I think the concern isn't over whether or not people are trying to be bodybuilders, or powerlifters, or whatever, bur rather just being healthy. It's true that not everyone has the mental strength or the mentality that it takes to be a bodybuilder, however, EVERYONE can be fit. I mean, honestly, barring some type of genetic problem or disease, EVERYONE can be in decent shape. All it takes is a little bit of work and determination, basically a decent diet and regular activity/exercise. I mean, I'm not talking about being an athlete or anything like that, but just being at a healthy bodyfat percentage and having your heart/lungs/etc in good shape. I think that that is what Soldier was getting at when he started this thread, that it's a huge problem now where people just let themselves go to complete shit without even caring. And like with what brandona saw, it's especially troubling when you have obese kids who are that way for no good reason. And yes, it will be cyclical. Anyway, we're not saying that people should strive to be bodybuilders, obviously it's not for everyone. On the other hand, barring legitimate medical reasons, I think that EVERYONE should at least try to stay healthy and in decent shape. And, as it was said, it is up to us to set the example and lead healthy lives.
I'm a damn proud American, but something that I'm pissed over is is how we are now the number 1 unhealthiest nation on earth. our mentalities. i am thankful my parents are rich so i traveled the world. i went to england, france, india, pakistan, pihilippines, canada, switzerland, chile, czech republics, and berlin. the one thing i notice about the US citizens is we expect everything easy. nothing has to be earned. people want respect out of the gates, no, you gotta earn it. people wanna have an 8 pack, gotta earn it, no pll is gonna do shit. people want fancy shit, gotta earn the money for it. people want money, gotta work for it. but we want an 8 pack the easiest way possible always lookin for that 1 pill or 1 product, we go around treating people like shit but all want to be hailed as kings and queens, we all want fancy cars so our entire paycheck goes to the car payment, and cant afford the neccesities. we steal money so we dont gotta work for it, i mean we even steal and hustle or own family for money rather than earning it.

I dont think that the president has anything to do with how our country is... if it was someone else people would complain... People complain because they can.
Blaming everyone else for our mistakes is the problem... McDonalds made me fat... NO McDonald's wants to make a profit off food... you made your self fat.. they didnt force you to drive up and order and they didnt force you to eat. We need to stop blaming others for what we do and what we should have avoided. We fight for freedom and our rights, but we also fight others because of lack of effort... I LOVE AMERICA!!! but we need to understand that we are responsible for our actions, NOT the government, NOT the press, NOT our neighbor, NOT your spouse... YOU!!! Suck it up
"my genetics cause me to be fat." bla bla bla... #### that...
the only thing GENETIC is your metabolism... just like guns don't kill people.. your metabolism doesn't make you fat... you either have to pull the trigger, or stuff your fat face with food...
hell, everything is solved by some kind of pill or shot these days...
they'll come up w/ some kind of med to make people thin...
easy man, there mite not be an 'obesity' disease, but there are diseases can make you obese. my cousin has this disease, im not sure the name but i will find out if you want, and he kinda acts like a angelina jolie, like he DOESNT EAT ANYTHING yet hes clocking over 300 at the age of 13 i believe. now one time during the holidays, i visited him and his family and i literally hung out with him all day. i couldnt believe the shit he was eating, he ate oatmeal for breakfast, couple pieces of turkey without the skin, and a salad for dinner with NO DRESSING yet the next morning he gained 9lbs! so ease up on those who are obese, of course there are the one who made themselves obese, but there are also those who dont like my cuz.
- Stop cutting 'gym class' becuase funds are too low in the school system
- Get the kids off their ass away from the boob tube and the play stations
- Literally MAKE dinner, FAST FOOD = FAST FAT
- Lead be example, parents are the first line of defense

I think Crypto hit the nail on the head. It's all about the mentality. It's a "fast food" world out there, people want it right friggin' now. 6 months of working out and eating right? No way! I can take these pills and lose 10 pounds this week! And some, who do start out trying to do it right, don't see instant results and give up. It's the same as people who tell me they don't want to lift weights because they don't want to "get all big." If only......

Here is the problems with Society nowadays:
People want things to happen NOW, they want food FAST, Loose weight FAST
Everything is now a rush-rush society
Most foods now are heavily processed, homogenized, gentically treated, it now results that most of the food we take in is not as nurtitionally full as it was lets say 100yrs. ago
Foods that actually contain nutrients naturally will cost 2x easy, 'cause the mark organic is on it
Anyone wanting to get away from being heavyset, fat or obese will now cost them MORE money to try to burn it off and get away from the growing norm of society (Specialzed meals, trainers, ...)
People eager to go to the short route of shedding weight (Or remove appearance) cost intense amounts of money and can be more harmful than for better (Fat dissolver injections, Liposuction, Stomach Bands, ...)
The constant health problems from these obese people forces hospitals to work overdrive to try and save someone who is growing a "Death sheath" across their body - it affects healthier people to suffer from rising cost of visits, operations, and time to set appointments
A remark I kept implying - MONEY - It is all greed of these people taking money away from EVERYONE
We are not the only country going through this crisis, the rest of the world is feeling it, but we were the first - and we got hit hard
We are the few that go the extra plate to keep our selves in place and in shape
We help one another, but we cannot help anyone outside this realm
We have patience, take in proper supplements, wait to make good food, and we don't just "work a sweat" - we work out to make the gym floor stick with sweat.
They just won't listen to us
They see athletes, the athletes speak an overview of what they do, but people bitch that they cannot look like them, or become them (But they were just told by the athletes on what is to be done to become them)
I have told stories of my body reformation over and over again, but no one has stepped up to take on the challenge - it frutstrates me a lot - especially seeing the upcoming generations are far worse off than my generation
If I ever get chance to be President - This would be a BIG issue I'd assault, along with the "RUSH-RUSH" mentality
