I dont know if anyone has seen the trailer for this upcoming film called 300. It reminds me of our way of life. 300 soldiers, Animals, born to be soldiers since child birth, disciplined, strong, and live only for honor. They were Spartans, probably the greatest soldiers that ever lived. I believe in a way our lives are just as similiar to that of Spartan Warriors.

Do we not wake up every morning knowing today we go to war. We think about it every minute, we breath it, it is in our skin, our souls, and we prepare for it daily. Its the iron way of life which we only live with honor. The only way a Spartan wants to be remembered is that he died in battle gloriously for his country. I too want to be remembered as the man who fought so gloriously in life to improve himself and the well being of his family.

I live as Animal and I only wish to die as Animal. Yet, they were the only ones willing to go up against the persian army right away with few numbers. We are the same, we dont give a shit what people think about us, our bodies, our stretch marks, the way we eat. That is why we Animals are the only ones who are different like many but are some of the only ones who stand up for who we are, our standards, and our way of life.

Funny how history repeats itself...

We are so few but its like what that dude in the trailer said "today everyone will remember that few stood against so many". One day we will impact the lives of many, and they too will join us. Just wanted to share that with everyone. Today i just took to much shit from ppl trying to putting me down. Every where i go the shit just doesnt stop, and its fuckin pissin me off already.

I saw the trailer when it first leaked on the internet months and months ago and months ago, I've been waiting ever since. I've read the graphic novel it's based on and now I'm also reading book about the battle called "Gates of Fire". There's a great passage in the book that I saved on my computer:

"Mankind as it is constituted is a boil and a canker. Observe the specimens in any nation other than Lakemadeon. Man is weak, greedy, craven, lustful, prey to every species of vice and depravity. He will lie, steal, cheat, murder, melt down the very statues of the gods and coin their gold as money for whores. This is man. This is his nature, as all poets attest.
Fortunately God in his mercy has provided a counterpoise to our species' innate depravity. That gift, my young friend, is war.
War, not peace, produces virtue. War, not peace, purges vice. War, and preparation for war, call forth all that is noble and honorable in a man. It unites him with his brothers and binds them in selfless love, eradicating in the crucible of necessity all which is base and ignoble. There in the holy mill of murder the meanest of men may seek and find that part of himself, concealed beneath the corrupt, which shines forth brilliant and virtuous, worthy of honor before the gods. Do not despise war, my young friend, nor delude yourself that mercy and compassion are virtues superior to andreia, to manly valor."

Just read the quote and replace "war" with "iron".

I always felt i was born in the wrong time of history. Movies like 300, Troy, Gladitor, Braveheart, The Patriot, etc. have always sent chills down my spine. I always thought i would fit in better in those times. Men lived by a code. Honor. When your name was called, you stood to fight. Thats why i loved playing junior hockey. When push came to shove, you could stand across from your competition and just battle. Face to face shot for shot. It gave me a chance to be a gladiator of some sorts. I felt like Maximus when someone would run my goalie and id get to be the player to avenge the action. The best was when things really escalated and it was team on team. Talk about fighting for pride. Fighting next to my teamates was an honor and some of the proudest times of my life. I felt like William Wallace sprinting across the ice to settle a score. These movies are not just a 2 hour escape for me. They light a fire under my ass like nothing else. Movies like these and expierences on the ice are some of my absolute favorite motivation for a big lift. I will be standing in line with a meal in hand pretending im number 301. Keep battling brothers

niladmirari88

I would suggest you all to read a book called "Gates of Fire." It's about the same battle in 300. It's basically about how the Spartans were the toughest sons of bitches to ever live. I couldn't put it down.

personally id like to see a more realistic battle then one with ogres and such in it. Still looks decent though

What do you expect, it's based on a comic book as you said. Gerald Butler even stated that they changed the tactics and formations used by real spartans to make them look cooler.

I don't know much history on Sparta, aside from the war background and they ran over Athens when the greek cities challenged each other. But my guessing is that these Spartans could also have been "Brilliant Olympians" with their athletism on the battlefield.

This movie gives me chills by watching the trailer, cannot wait for it to come out in theatres.

Most films loaded with special effects are a fuckin mockery... But 300, like Sin City, looks amazing--and you really couldn't pick better subject matter. I think the imposing shadow cast by Frank Miller is keeping the CGI nerds in check and causing them to think twice about the craft of filmmaking in order to do Miller's graphic novels justice. Peace, G

8) Off Topics & Off Limits...
We all come from different backgrounds. From all walks of life… Race, creed, color, nationality, economic background. What brings us together is our love of the lifestyle and the fact that we all have committed our lives, in varying degrees, to the call of iron. This is a place to unify, to come together, to learn and to grow as a community. There are divisive issues in this world, no doubt about that, and many of us have very strong opinions. But those opinions have no place here and very little relevance. We here at Animalpak.com believe that it is good to feel strongly about these type of issues... However, matters of religion, politics, discussions about sex or lifestyles, and talk of drugs are officially off limits.

i read in a men's health their routine. from what i can remember...

"the 300 workout" - the name in honor of the movie
they did circut training, a bunch of different lifts without putting the bar down, all and all totalling 300 reps. stuff like rows, curls, shoulder presses, upright rows, floor presses, turkish getups, front squats.

then some of them also did some strong man type things, where they would flip a huge tire, jump in and out, run around it, and flip it again.

We can't wait to see the movie either! Definitely hitting it up tomorrow night. I've read quite a bit of the history before, they even make reference to the Battle of Thermopylae at the War College in the military. The Spartans great training background and sacrifice made this battle pivotal in the history of the Greco-Persian war. It ultimately led to victories in the subsequent battles that followed and Greece stayed Greece. These soldiers were up against an army of approximately 60,000 or more. They had honor too. King Leonidas only took men who had sons at home old enough to take care of their families. They knew this was a one way ticket.

I have a feeling we're going to walk away from the movie theater itching to train instead of going home to sleep. LOL!!!!

For those concerned about the historical accuracy of the film, stop worrying. It is startlingly close to historical accounts from Plutarch and Herodotus. For more info, check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae .

The movie is Animal, down to the bone. If you have not seen it. GO!. But a word of warning: you will not be able to sleep without going to the gym first.

yo, fellas. The movie is based on Frank Miller's graphic novel. So of course it's gonna be overdone and not exactly historically accurate. I mean, the Spartans didn't just wear a cape and loincloth into battle. But that is also why I cannot wait to see this movie. They emphasize the brutal combat, honor, pride, sacrifice, and everything we Animals stand for.

No, Spartans fought with armor on. The reason they don't have any in "300" is because the artist couldn't/didn't want to draw armor. Here's a typical spartan soldier:

I dunno about the bare chested fighting.... the spartans were hoplite troops and armed as such...a spear, shield, helm, breastplate and a short sword. Prolly just hollywood on that one, but who knows what really went down and who cares...wether the fought fully armored or ass naked the message they sent was still the same...they were some bad mothers and they weren't afraid to die

ok, so first off, lemme say that you fucking bastards are all the luckiest mother fuckers out there. i am stuck in Iraq for another 70 days hoping that the 300 is still in the theaters when i get home so i can see it on the big screen.

secondly, not to harsh on anyone on here. but to the cats that were trying to compare the life of an Animal to that of a Spartan, What the FUCK? how can you sit there and compare lifting and eating and lifting to living and dieing by the sword. to literally be hacked to death with a fucking sword, or to be impaled by a spear.

i wasn't lucky enough to be able to join the military due to 2 bad knees by the time i was 18, but after a year out here (I'm a firefighter/paramedic on a base in Iraq) in the desert protecting soldiers, airmen, seaman, and Marines, living thru some of what they live thru out here, i can say that shit isn't anywhere close. those Spartans, and these guys & girls out here are the one who share a bond. More so the Marines than the other branches in my opinion (due to their lifestyle, training methods, and attitude towards combat), but not us. not us back home.

you guys talk about battles, and fighting, that shit is all in your head. yah its tough. the animal lifestyle sucks ass sometimes. but the only real mortal danger is what? crushing yourself under a bar? lets be real here. come over here and dodge mortars and rockets. come over here and wash blood and body parts out of a HMMWV. the Spartans had a motto, a creed that they all lived by. When the men would go off to battle the women, and the elder men would hand them their shields and say "Return with it [the shield], or upon it" meaning that a Spartan soldier was expected to return from battle either victorious (with his shield) or dead (carried on his shield).

that's my piece, i'm sure there are plenty of you who will disagree, so whatever.

well, while we unfortunately can't walk around with swords and spears and shit and hack people up anymore, we certainly do our 'battles' as hard and with as much attitude as anyone. noone is slighting what is going on over in Iraq, and i am sure that the horrors of war are something that will stain your memory forever, but for most of us our battlefield is the weight room, and the war continues on everyday. everyone is where they are by choice these days, and noone has the right to belittle another mans choices. we may disagree, but it doesn't make it wrong.

forget historical context and enjoy it for what it is, not what its not. my all time absolute fav, tombstone, had it been historically correct it would have been extremely boring.

thats another movie that kills me. Hell they even forgot an Earp brother. I am not saying the movie wont be good, but as a historian it is difficult to sink my teeth into these movies knowing what is missing

ok, so first off, lemme say that you fucking bastards are all the luckiest mother fuckers out there. i am stuck in Iraq for another 70 days hoping that the 300 is still in the theaters when i get home so i can see it on the big screen.

secondly, not to harsh on anyone on here. but to the cats that were trying to compare the life of an Animal to that of a Spartan, What the FUCK? how can you sit there and compare lifting and eating and lifting to living and dieing by the sword. to literally be hacked to death with a fucking sword, or to be impaled by a spear.

i wasn't lucky enough to be able to join the military due to 2 bad knees by the time i was 18, but after a year out here (I'm a firefighter/paramedic on a base in Iraq) in the desert protecting soldiers, airmen, seaman, and Marines, living thru some of what they live thru out here, i can say that shit isn't anywhere close. those Spartans, and these guys & girls out here are the one who share a bond.

I dont think anyone here disputes the horrors in this war, however as was already said, we all have our battles. For most here it is in the weight room. I will acknowledge that it is not in the same world as war, but lets not try to demean anyone else. Also, lets not discuss the war in great detail, the political discussion will not end well in my opinion

Persian Envoy: "Our arrows will blot out the sky"
Stelios: "Then we will fight in the shade"

This line is straight from the words of Dienekes as told by Herodotus.

The funny part comes when they are crouched under their shields, sky-blackening volley of arrows rebounding harmlessly away, and one soldier looks at Stelios and says something like " You had to say we'd fight in the shade!". They both start laughing.

"Spartan!"
"Yes, m'lady"
"Come home with your sheild or on it"

The arcadian captain meets Leonidas, and is shocked by the small size of his force "You only brought 300 men?" he asks incredulously.
Leonidas looks at the Archadians in turn, points to one and says:"You, what is your profession?"
The guy responds: " I am a potter"
Leonidas points to another one:"YOU! What is YOUR profession?"
This man responds "I am a blacksmith"
Leonidas says "SPARTANS, WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?"
300 spartans return something like: "We are soldiers!" or a battlecry

Leonidas: "This is where we fight. This is where they die."

Persian Officer: "Spartans, lay down your weapons."
Spartan King Leonidas: "Come and get them!"
ΜOΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ (Come and get them!) is actually the motto of the Greek First Army Corps.

There are more...

I dont think anyone was saying the consequences of being a weightlifter is the same as being a spartan. What we're saying is that if you can take the spartan creed of honor and discipline with you to your training you will train exactly the way you need to be an animal. Spartans fought beyond pain, they didn't run from anything, they either won or they died. Animals train beyond pain, they don't run away from the burden of iron, if there is a muscle fiber left in us to put up the weight we will put it up no matter how much it hurts.

Wow, in the wake of all the crappy flicks that have come out lately, what an epic classic-in-the-making--one of those movies that you watch for the 50th time and it's just as good. Seeing this at about 2 o'clock, this movie served as a wicked potent pre-workout energizer. I was like an animal in a cage at the end, running to the gym. Every time I felt like one more squat wasn't possible, I saw the interlocked sheild wall pulse and throw the enemy back. The weights didn't stand a chance.

It wasnt meant to be taken in literal sense where we think were walkin around with fuckin spears and shields bro. What the comparison was stated for was to show that the Animal way of life takes a lot of discipline, and like the Spartans we should not give up, and we should not retreat. The point of the comparison was to say that if we are to live this life style we should not be ashamed of it, but to rather stand out and show people what we are and why we do this.

What we face here aint shit compared to what soldiers face in Iraq or any other war that ever happened. It is much harder mentally, physically, and perhaps spiritually. My uncles were all in the army and I heard enough stories of what they went through to make me realize that this is heaven for us.

None the fuckin less it is still a challenge maybe not as great as what soldiers face, but a challenge is a challenge. Some have it harder then others but once again the comparison was made to show the people of the forum that we should have a mind set like the spartans. No disrespect to you bro but I think you misunderstood what people were tryin to say. And good luck to all the soldiers out there in Iraq.

Also what I really wanted to say was I saw the movie last night. It was a good film and the action was great. Two thins I was disapointed about was:

1. I wish that they would of gone deeper into the spartan way of life, I will probably get some book and learn about them.

2. I wish they would of added a frickin 20 minutes to the end of the money. For all those that saw it probably would know why? I dont want to ruin it for anyone else.

Overall I am going to go the IMAX theater and watch it again.

For my part: if the battle were as clear-cut as the battle of Thermopolyae, I would gladly die the most terrible death between those cliffs. Death comes to everyone, and I would face it that day, on my own terms, for clear and noble reasons, knowing that I led an honorable and useful life.

I feel that drawing an analogy between our troops' situation and the Spartans is not a far stretch; however, I am not unworthy of similar comparison. Merely because I am a civilian, you dismiss me as un-Spartan?. What do you know of me? I am a warrior. My blood sings for strength and simplicity, for a sword and an enemy to put it to the test. That is in my heart and the center of my being. I am a warrior in a world that cannot comprehend them, and has no place for me. It is this dichotomy of this existence that drives me to this sport; for the sake of my sanity.

Why do I not fight then?

The battle fought now is not clear. It is not the same, and I need not side with any part of the complex iraq debate to prove my point. There was never a debate as to whether the spartans SHOULD fight the Persians, but rather, if they COULD, given the time of year and the unsupportive portents of the oracle. Furthermore, the 300 spartans that fought in this battle chose to fight, and they chose to die. It was FREE WILL. The military would not allow me a choice to fight or not to fight, nor should it.

The appeal of the Animal life is that it hearkens to the discipline, strength, and sacrifice of the Spartans. Our life, though, is infinitely more complex than theirs, with considerations Sparta knew little about. For me to die on a battlefield, of my own volition, against clear enemies, for an obvious and worthy purpose is almost impossible in the current geopolitical reality.

If it were, I would regret that I could only die once.

So please don't disrespect us so gratutiously. Some of us are merely spartans born too late for such a beautiful and simple death.

karmazon

Ok, went to see it with my dad this weekend, if u havent seen it, concentrate on the dialogue and the characters names. One thing i found kinda funny, if u look real close, u can see that the "abs" that all the Spartans have are airbrushed on......wonder if my friend Jan Tana did them. Also............ none of em had legs, but they all had upper bodies. If youre wondering who the Spartans are, they are people who lived in SPARTA (duh) which is like a COUNTY or area of which alot of towns are incorporated into.

(im 1/2 greek 1/2 spanish, guess that accounts for my genes)

so im just checking...

we all know that '300' was baised off of the graphic novel '300' by frank miller, who was inspired by the origional movie 'the 300 spartans'....right?

it just pisses me off when people say it should have been more historically acurate, when it never was intended to be.

but aside from that, easily my most favorite movie of this year. i saw it 3 times, twice in a regular theater, and once on an IMAX. gotta love it when you lifting partner works at a movie theater. oh and by the way, we hit the gym each time after seeing it in the regular theater. the IMAX got out after midnight, and our gym was closed.

I honestly think this quote from the movie speaks for all of us:

Xerxes: Imagine what horrible fate awaits my enemies when I would gladly kill any of my own men for victory.
Leonidas: And I would die for any one of mine.

I'll be picking up 300 this evening. It's an entertaining film (pure visual coffee, actually), but it still wasn't worth all the pre-movie hype. I had read Miller's graphic novel prior to seeing the film, so I knew it wasn't going to be a straight telling of the Battle of Thermopylae, but I was still bothered by how the movie took the fantasy elements even further (I REALLY could have done without the Immortals being friggin' orcs, for example).

But it's still fun.

300 wasn't that good, I dont know why people are so amazed by it. I also hate the way every other post on here is about how alike bodybuilding is to it. Its not even close...we move heavy stuff, thats it. They train to kill or be killed in every literal sense of the term. I dont know about you but theres no one threatening me with a spear to finish my set of squats.

went out and bought it last night, have been waiting for a while. the wife and kids were gone, 2 hrs were mine....it is awesome. very intense, very well done. i am sure it has been 'hollywoodized' but nevertheless it was great. i echo some of the sentiments on how it doesn't parralel the lifting life though; lifting is lifting, this was survival at its rawest, and a battle for freedom. yes, they were hardcore, dedicated men, but that is as far as i would draw the lines as far as the animal life is concerned. again though, a fantastic watch and one i'll be repeating soon.

amen I don't understand what all the hype is about this movie, I saw it, it was ok....does it pump me up to workout-no, did I learn anything from watchin it-no, hes indeed there in good shape, but when your getting PAID to be in good shape makes life a whole lot easier. My Opinion-Save your money a few pounds of beef, eggs, fish, PB, AP, something that will bring you one step closer. not just occupy your time

Hmmm

If were looking for a direct correlation between fighting and bodybuilding, there isnt too much on the surface.

IF ON THE OTHER HAND, we're talking about the warrior mentality and mental toughness needed by bodybuilder and warrior alike, that is where the parallel is undeniable.

In that sense, the movie is phenomenal... Leonidas is most definitely an animal.

08-02-07, 5:17 pm
Well, its the best story of underdogs so to speak.

They DID have the best military forces, BUT they had 300 fucking guys versus THOUSANDS.

That is similar to our lives.

One body versus so many pounds/plates/people on top of us.

We're the underdogs.

We're not supposed to win.

We're doubted.

Yet, we still come through.

Only on the most basic level.

300 isn't based so much off the actual Battle of Thermopylae as it is off of Frank Miller's graphic novel, so there's those annoying "artistic liberties", like giant elephants & rhinos, the Immortals as orcs, King Xerxes looking like RuPaul, etc.

Beowulf

A lot of the movie was not historically accurate but the main story was and alot of the things about Spartan culture was true as well. after seeing it I dont think it was intended to be historically accurate rather it was suppose dto be a movie to sedn the message to never back down and always stand up for what you believe in even if all odds are against you, if you prepare for something you will achieve your goal in one way or another or die trying. the movie was about sending a message, not meant to be a historical account.

It was disgustingly inaccurate. But the movie was based off a comic book.

I didnt like the movie at all, but I am a history buff..

The movie would have been 10 times better if they actually made a historical account of the battle of thermopylae. There was/is no need to spice it up.. the actual battle and what went on before that is epic enough.

I just saw the movie this weekend and it was really cool but I was a little disappointed. I think I was expecting a longer movie like Gladiator and 300 just sort of ends and I left a little cheated, but the battle scenes were the best I've ever seen and the idea of spartan culture was great. To top it all of the queen was crazy hot.
