Higa,
Wanted to say thanks again for the oppurtunity to train with you and your crew. You guys were great hosts and I had a blast trying strongman for the first time.

In case any of you would like to participate or check out a cool event, I am promoting my 3rd amateur Strongman contest here in Washington state.

"Washington's Strongest Apple"
June 12, 2010

The entry form is posted online here:
http://www.nastrongmaninc.com/pdf/entries/2010washing.pdf

The top 3 competitors in each weight class will qualify for the NAS Amateur National Championships that will be held in Reno, NV. (mid-November)
The overall winner of Nationals is guaranteed their Pro Card for USA Strongman.

Last year, I had a total of 38 competitors.
It included Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and British Columbia, Canada.

The event is held at the City of Des Moines Marina, with the majestic waters of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains in the background.
The marina's Farmers Market is also adjacent to our contest area.

I hope to see some of you Animals there!

Awesome event, Higa. I'm going to see if there is anything out here in NJ. I like to go to an event to check it out and then enter one after some strength training.

I was able to hit a Wed afternoon workout with some of the boys today.

Pre-workout drink: Shock Therapy grape

Warm-ups of Plyo box jumps:
5 pallets high- 3 sets of 5 jumps
6 pallets high- 3 sets of 5 jumps
7 pallets high- 3 jumps (1st one was running, to build confidence. Then, did 4 sets of 5 jumps. (Personal best!)
Then, I figured fuck it, and see if I could jump onto 8 pallets.

My first attempt at 8 pallets high (39 1/8" tall):

Take #2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RZn7_rpC-c

Take #3:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0h76itiaIg

694 lb TIRE FLIP:
6 flips
9 flips

Finally, we did some Prowler sprints:
180 lbs of plates on a 50 lb Prowler. Did a distance of 48 feet, and we tried to beat each other's time.
I did some Farmers Walk holds for time in b/w my set and Zack & Tyler's. Just so I could get some quick grip work in b/w sets.
I think we ended up doing 6-7 of these Prowler sprints.

Zack Nims: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD2eeevFwzY

Yours truly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMYYdWisbHU

Tyler Scott kicks our asses with his time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86DWpQe4Vzc

Post-workout drink: Torrent sour citrus rush

Final comments from today's workout:
Tyler and I were thinking that if I am going for a max Box Jump, I need to reduce the amount of warm-ups I do. Instead of doing set of 5, I'm gonna cut them down to triples or singles.
I feel better doing these box jumps every week. Plus, I have been weighing at 299 lbs bw since the Arnold. I was 307 lbs BW the day I flew out to the Arnold.

Tire flip: I was just going for speed on that light tire. Next week, i am going to bust out the "pig" 874 lb tire that we have. I have to flip a 900 lb tire for 6 flips at the Sequim contest.

Aloha!

Warm-ups:
BOX JUMPS
5 pallets- 3 sets of 3 standing jumps
6 pallets- 3 sets of 3 standing jumps
7 pallets- 4 sets of 3 standing jumps
8 pallets- 2 sets of running jumps for a single.

FARMERS WALKS w/1.5" handles:
184 lbs for 72 feet, turned and walked back for 72 feet. (144 ft total)
204 lbs for 72 feet, turn & go 72 feet, turn again for 72 feet. (216 feet total)
224 lbs for 72 feet, turn & go 72 feet, turn again for 72 feet. (216 feet total)

AXLE PRESS (2" thick):
99 lbs x 3 reps
143 lbs x 3 reps
209 lbs x 3 reps
229 lbs for a single x 4 sets
249 lbs for a single
269 lbs for a single.

14" LOG PRESS:
180 lbs x 3 reps
246 lbs for a single
290 lbs for a single
300 lbs for a single.

Then, Steve and I decided to come up with some weird, unorthodox exercise. Steve thinks his CORE is weak, and was fiddling around with a lighter keg.
So, I figured what the hell? Try it out!

180 lbs Keg overhead walk for 50 feet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM67cnQF00k

Then, I left something for Zack and Tyler. Lord knows our training group isn't competitive with each other, right?

200 lbs Keg overhead walk for 50 feet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqagojYWPAY

Post-workout drink: Torrent sour citrus
1 hour later: Proteon Bar peanut butter flavor

Final thoughts: Usually, I don't workout on Fridays. However, my daughter has Little League tomorrow early in the morning and thats why I went today.
I did feel like my legs weren't as fresh doing the Box Jumps, because of the 4 sets of 10 reps Front Squats I did yesterday.
This also made a difference in my Log Press today. When I cleaned it, my press wasn't as strong as usual due to not firing off my legs.

Have a great weekend!

Another solid workout Higa. I was curious as to what other excercises I could do at the gym to help out with strongman. On the boat all i've got is to 30lb dumbbells that I'm making do with.

Here is my routine with the dbs. I do a flat bench on a milk crate and pillow, rows, shrugs, bent lats, squats, curl, kickbacks, shoulder presses on my knees, ceiling is to low and side raises with 10lb dbs. I mix up the bi's and tri's. I go for 10-15 reps with no break in between. After one circuit I rest for 2mins and do a total of 3 circuits.

Thanks. Just trying to at least maintain what I have. I bring my intra-aid, torrent, and nitro with me. Usually I bring ST but am taking the month off to give my body a break. Eating is good. Lots of steak, chicken and fish. The cook we have on now is real good. Don't think he's made a bad meal in the 2 months he sailed with us. He makes some killer ribs. The meat just falls off the bone.

Chest flys? That will help for the next time you come to the warehouse and for grabbing Stones.
You can also do DB Finger Curls to help with your grip.

Amazing dedication to do what you are doing on the boat bro. Keep it up!

Are the DB's fixed Scotty? Or are they plate loaded?

If they are plate loaded, you could even do some pinch-grips with them. Not sure what your able to do, but fuckin proud of what you are doing while in the boat.

Ok.

Maybe, you can throw in some Lunges for extra leg work?
On your next trip, could you fit a 55 cm Resist a ball in your boat? This could add some more stuff to do and possibly take place of that milk crate your are using to bench off of.

Since reading the article on stone lifting I have found myself a nice rock which we reckon is between 100kg-110kg. Ive been in the gym bodybuilding for 7 years but in the past 3 months of doing some rock lifting it has changed my view of strength. I love weights but man getting that rock up to your chest is maybe the best feeling ive ever had. We also walk 100 odd metres up a steep incline carrying smaller rocks. I was wondering if there are any other simple activities you could recommend not necessarily with rocks but this style of training?
PS I do have a chain but it weighs about 15kg. I don't think I can call it a chain anymore after seeing yours, where did you get it????

I bought my chain from a scrapyard here in Seattle. Each link weighs about 55 lbs. They just asked how much I needed, and torch cut through this huge anchor chain and got me what I needed.

You could pick up the small rocks for reps? Or, lift a small one overhead and hold the lockout?
Hell, even pressing a small rock and hurling it as far as you can, then go lift it again and repeat.

Sounds fun mate!

Usually, HW Pros will have to flip b/w 800-950 lbs tires in a major Pro show.
The heaviest tire I ever flipped in a contest was 1,100 lbs at the "Hawaii's Strongest Man", maybe 5 years ago?
I actually beat Phil Phister and Travis Ortmayer in that event! It was so low to the ground, so the tall guys had a hard time.

We gotta flip a 900 lbs tire tonight, at the "Sequim Strongman Showdown".

Higa - it was great meeting you at the bb.com expo. Thanks so much for your time and help on the board. I haven't touched farmer's handles in several months, but ran 135 lbs a hand for 50 ft pretty good today. Got silly and did 160 a hand with straps, my PR without straps is 150 a hand. Should do ok in that event on 5/22. Thanks again, and take care.

Yea girl! It was great to meet you in person too, and I apologize for not remembering you at the Mt Rainier's Strongest Man contest a few years back.

You will do great! Go in their with a positive attitude, and stay consistent! Let me know how it goes, ok?

Good luck!

I placed 4th overall, out of 6.
Made a huge mistake in the Yoke Walk, which costed me 3rd place overall. Will explain later.

David Ostlund (winner)
Karl Gillingham 2nd
Breck Gault 3rd
HIGA MONSTER 4th
Chris Lee 5th
Kevin Nee 6th

Beautiful day in Sequim, and all of the locals were jazzed up for the strongman contest during the Irrigation Festival.

PRESS MEDLEY:
Here is a video showing what we had to press: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN7UG1cm7g0

Me doing the medley. I wanted to do a tribute to my late friend, Jesse Marunde. He used to stand on one leg after every heavy overhead press. That 379 lb Log was HEAVY. Sarge just got through making that last week, and its one of the coolest logs I've ever seen. It was so heavy that as I was trying to row it onto my lap, it was pulling me forward on my toes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msBiPf9bqn4

Dave Ostlund was the only competitor to press all 4 implements. Dave was smart, and went for the 379 lb Log first.

810 lb YOKE WALK for 75 feet:
I was paired up against Kevin Nee. Got under the Yoke, and on the whistle KILLED the yoke cause it felt really light. I crossed over this painted line, and was stoked at how easy that was.
I heard my friend Robbie yell, "Grant, get to the finish line!" I thought he wanted me to go to the finish line and cheer Kevin Nee on. I started cheering for Kevin, but he kept going right by me. WTF? I knew something was wrong, and I saw my wife with this puzzled look.
I stopped 8 feet short of the actual finish line. WHAT A FUCKIN DUMBASS YOU ARE HIGA.
I end up getting 4th in that event, when I could have possibly won it, or gotten 2nd place. Cost me alot of points in the overall.

FARMERS WALK:
It was supposed to be 310 lbs in each hand for 150 feet. Sarge changed it to 340 lbs with 1.5" smooth handles. Plus, the pickup was super low.
That sucked. Only 2 guys were able to finish.

ARM OVER ARM of an Army Humvee:
The US Army had a big booth there, and we used one of their Humvees to pull it uphill on the dirt road. SUCKED ASS cause it was so heavy.
No one finished the entire 75 feet. Dave Ostlund won this event with a pull of about 51 feet.

ATLAS STONES onto a 56" platform:
256 lbs-392 lbs stones. It felt really great, cause I one-motioned the first 3 stones onto the box.
Went to the 392 lbs stone, and tried to pick it up off the ground. I got it almost to my lap but it started to slide down my forearms. Tried to pick it another 3 times, but no go.
Dave Ostlund won this event, and the overall title.
Here is a video that my daughter filmed for me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Frw0mVwlXGE

Finally, we got a whole bunch of kids from the crowd. Including my daughter and nephew...and we did a Tug of War challenge. The kids vs the 6 Styornmgna competitors and some of the helpers/loaders.

Thanks for all your support! Hope you enjoy it!

I had the pleasure of working the Animal Pak booth at the "Boise Fitness Expo" on Saturday.
Me, Rage and his wife were there giving out samples to the people of Boise at the Qwest Arena.

Then, I did a Strongman clinic/demonstration with Corey St Clair (Idaho) and Brian Shaw (Colorado).
Brian placed 3rd in last year's World's Strongest man contest, and is 6' 8" tall & 385 lbs of Colorado beef.

"Furious Pete" eating 15 Blimpie sandwichs in less than 5 minutes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8ElJGabV3k

Me squatting 303 lbs for 30 reps. I used an Apollon Axle that weighs only 33 lbs. The guy on the left thought I could only do 10 reps. The other guy on the right called for 17. SMASHED IT!

FYI, those squat racks were owned by my late friend, Reggie Barton. He passed away earlier this year from a tumour in his neck.

Brian Shaw "cuddling" a 259 lb Atlas Stone with relative ease:

Corey St Clair flipping a 1,000 lb tire. Corey is 6' 5" tall, and notice that the tire is almost as tall as him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwlmQSKVWfs

Brian Shaw doing the Car Deadlift for reps:

Then, Corey did it with NO STRAPS:

"Mr Puniverse" competitors posing down with Branch Warren & 2 other bodybuilders:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1QNrWFLI5w

Finally, Corey, me and Shaw went to an all you can eat Hawaiian Buffet at "Ono's Hawaiian Cafe".
Me and Shaw put a hurting on that buffet line, and I was so stuffed! Big thanks to Mike Mohica, the owner.
Shaw needed a ride back to his hotel, so Corey's friend offered him a ride in his Mazda Miata!

The event will help encourage local youths to prevent teen obesity among themselves and their friends/family.

Rage has helped me by donating 8 "ANIMAL" t-shirts to the first place team.

The competition will start at 12pm-3pm.
Please come by if you have some time, and cheer these local kids on!

That wasn't me with the sleeves on, that was Karl Gillingham.
A few guys like to use sleeves, but I don't. I'd rather deal with "stone rash" on my forearms.

I think its personal preference, cause guys like Karl Gillingham, Brian Shaw and Chad Coy use sleeves on stones.

Congratulations to all 7 high schools that participated this past Saturday, 5/22!

The winner was the Juanita High School Rebels. Each of the 8 kids on their team won $500 towards higher education. Thats a total of $4,000 given away to these kids!
2nd place: SW Youth & Family Services
3rd place: Eastside Catholic High

EVENTS:
Tug of War
Wheelbarrow relay with 190 lbs in the wheelbarrow
Plate pull (standing arm over arm of 90 lbs of plates for 30 yards)
Cone agility drill (run a figure 8 twice, then sprint 10 yards to next cone, do it 4 times)
300 yard backwards shuttle (this event was NO JOKE!)
Tire flip for 30 yards

Here are a couple of videos I took:

Pre-game interview with my friend Willie Austin. All proceeds went toward the "Austin Foundation". I used to volunteer at 2 local high schools with Willie. I started as a Front Desk Attendant at Willie's gym back in 1998. He is one of the reasons I got certified as a Personal Trainer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhRVNqYH5YQ

After the contest, the Polynesian kids from SW Youth & Family Center did a "haka" for the crowd:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7r_AlG2BM4

It was an honor to MC this contest. Hopefully, we can make an impact on our children and have them workout regularly and combat Teen Obesity. Instead of staying on the couch playing PSP and XBox for 15 hours a day.

Big thanks to "Rage" for donating 8 t-shirts to this contest. They were awarded to the 3rd place team of Eastside Catholic High.
What sucks is that I was going to take a picture with them, but they had to leave early for a baseball game and I was stuck MCing the rest of the contest. I had no idea they left.
Wish I could have took more pics, but it was tough with the microphone in hand.

Much aloha,

Obviously, I didn't make my coffee strong enough this morning...

The teams also had to do 2 more events:
SANDBAG CARRY RUN:
They had to hold a 28 lbs sandbag overhead and run 53 yards sideline to sideline. THEN, run backwards 53 yards with the sandbag overhead to the other sideline.
After that, they tagged the next person to go. All 6 kids had to do this.

SANDBAG TOSS FOR GREATEST DISTANCE:
All 6 kids had 3 attempts to throw a 28 lb sandbag. The team with the furthest distance won.

Hey bro,
I admire your enthusiasm, but make sure you train smart and don't get hurt doing it.

Sounds like your are limited to equipment at your home. Thats ok, you just gotta make the best of it.
Keep up the push-ups, but start doing some Overhead Presses with those dumbbells.
Also, if someone can teach you how to lunge properly, you can use those DB's to do either lunges or step-ups.

You can also do One-arm rows with those DB's to help build your back strength.
Or, do some Stiff-legged Deadlifts with them.

If you are able to properly squat in the school gym, you should start squatting and do some Deadlifting.

Keep your spirit up, cause thats gonna make you do big things in your life.

A gorgeous day in the Seattle area this past Saturday.
I had a total of 42 competitors, including 3 women.

We had the early weigh in at a local sushi bar I frequent, and all of the competitors goodie bags were the black "ANIMAL" ones.
Even though other local companies made some product donations, the competitors shirts and sample packets were in the "ANIMAL" bag. You gotta love that!
Big thanks to Rage for hooking me up with those bags, and the SHOCK THERAPY sample packets that he donated for all my competitors. He also donated 2 boxes of protein bars that I used to feed my loaders/spotters during the hot day.

I had a local photographer come and take over 2,000 photos.
They are all on his website, and he is a regular here taking photos for all the Bodybuilding, Fitness/Figure contests in Washington state.
I couldn't believe the sick shots he took with his camera! Here is the link to his gallery.

http://www.jimwallingford.com/Events/Strongmen-Contests/2010-Washingtons-Strongest/12531061_hZkZB#899411647_b6Twy

It was great to see all the local fitness athletes come by to support my show.
IFBB Pro, Tanji Johnson also made an appearance. She is looking great getting ready for the "Ms Fitness Olympia".
Jen Turnbull and Kristina Lum who are also fitness models from the area, stopped by to support me too.

Other than alot of hard work to promote a show, it was another success for me.
The city of Des Moines was very happy with our turnout, and they are moving us to the new Special Events area that is currently under construction for 2011.

Even though I was up with limited sleep from loading the truck at the Warehouse, to setting up the show and running it, after the competition was done I decided to man up.
My bro, Corey St Clair flew in from Idaho to help me with MC duties and to also do some exhibition lifting.
We decided to do the Keg Load and beat the winning HW amateurs time. I was fuckin beat, but WTF its strongman. The kegs weigh 220, 250, 270 and 290 lbs. All of them were 15 feet away. I was pissed cause my body was so fried out from the long day, that it cost me this event...
Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez346Je0tA8

Here is another video from a HW competitor that did an interview with me and posted it on his website: www.extremestrengthnow.com

Finally, I am proud to say that 7 of my training partners did great in this contest!
3 of them won their class, 2 second places, 1 third place, and 1 seventh out of 12 competitors (all his lifts were PR's though!)
Thats pretty badass and I am glad to have a workout crew like them to help push each other and me during training. We workout every Saturday morning from 7am-9am, all year long. Its only gonna make us more of an ANIMAL.

Looking forward to bigger and better things in next year's contest. Stay tuned.

I used Zack's bands for 240 lbs x 1 reps, then I tossed the bands & clean/pressed for 5 more. The focus was to strict press all the reps.
Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhe-7CpdGt8

Here is Zack doing 180 lb empty log with bands. Zack only weighs 235 lbs.
His 4th rep was UNREAL gut check. Especially with those bands trying to throw his form off cause he almost fell back off my platform.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTiVP15QZ84

Check out this cool Front Shoulder Raise exercise he thought of using my Power Blocks and a cheap moving company rubber band that cost $2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItTfCx5xM_M

600 feet total distance FARMERS WALKS:
This shit sucked, especially doing it on the hot asphalt. 160 lbs in each hand, but the handles are 1.5" diameter and smooth as silk. Hardest handles we train with, so the light weight is a bitch with these handles.
I thought I was walking through a mudbog on my last 300 feet. I felt like I weighed 500 lbs and had to also carry weight in my hands.

Countdown to 3 hours left until the start of the evening show here in Portland, Oregon.

Rage and I set up the Animal Pak booth this morning at 8am and stayed for the pre-judging. We got lots of shirts to sell and some Animal Pump & Animal Cuts samples to hand out.
I got the Log set up right in FRONT of our booth.
When I press that bitch, you are going to see the huge backdrop of Machine and the "Shut up and train" motto in the back of me.

LET'S GET THIS MUTHAFUCKA STARTED!
Will post pics and maybe a video later.

I am doing it during the intermission of the evening show.

I had a great time!

We had a 15 minute intermission, and I had to slam in some good presses to keep the crowd entertained while they were in the vendor's area.

I basically ended up doing 260, 290, 300 and 310 lb Log Presses in 10 minutes!

300 lb Log Press:

310 lb Log Press:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8rp_O_eNnQ

A big thanks to Rage for helping me set up the log, and it was great to work the booth with him too.
As you can see in the videos, he is lean and mean. I can't wait for him to get on the stage in Cleveland.

Something to think about...
Rage and I were talking to this lady named Pam. She said her husband James was competing in his first bodybuilding show tonight. He used to drive cross country in a semi truck, and weighed 306 lbs at 31% bodyfat.
He did a Hydro test yesterday at came in at 4.3% bodyfat and I believe lost 96 lbs.
They also lost their son last year. He did 6 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as an Airmen who refueled planes in the sky, but ended up dying in a motorcycle accident while speeding when he came home to the USA.
Pam said, "he came outta the womb running and gunning, and he went out that way too"

After all of this, James made a decision to change his lifestyle. I am not sure of his placing, but this man is a fuckin inspiration and is living a healthier lifestyle! He pretty much bought all the Animal shirts we had for sale at the table!

I tip my hat off to James!

I've never done a race, nor do I want to do a 5K or anything like that.
But this thing would intrigue me because we get do to the obstacle courses during the 3.1 miles.

I'm thinking of wearing some ANIMAL shirts...Team Animal Pak has a nice ring to it! How about it? Is the HIGA MONSTER a "WARRIOR"?

Whats going to suck is that its the weekend after I compete in a 3 day contest in Gatineau, Quebec. Can you say, trashed?

Posted this on my "journey" too...

Had a great workout today with all of my normal training partners, along with Excessive, Mr Dead and SailinScotty.

SHOCK THERAPY pre-workout
Foam rolled and dynamic stretches for 30 mins.

YOKE WALKS:
400 lbs for 80 feet
580 lbs for 50 feet x 2 sets
760 lbs for 80 feet x 2 sets

CONAN'S WHEEL:
We got stupid on our last set: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE8jZ8UEjXc
That was 3 plates on each side, then Max who weighs 265 lbs and Kristyn weighs 145 lbs.

205 lbs STONE LOAD LADDER (load/unload onto 50", 56", 60", 64", 68", 72" tall platforms):
Me and Zack had a challenge. See who could do this shit faster...
Zack's 1st turn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fddXAZapx1c

Inspirational story...
I met Ali McWeeney last year when I was the MC for the "Central Washington University's strongest man/woman" contest. She won the women's class, and you knew she was special. She was so gifted, and I thought that with practice she would be a great strongwoman.
July 4, 2009 she lost her leg in a boating accident. I found out when I returned from a Mexico vacation. One of my clients sent me a link cause she was pretty sure I knew this girl in the story.

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/50627812.html

I visited her in the hospital and despite being drugged up she told me, "Grant, I am going to compete in your show next year."
Last March, she competed in a USAPL meet and did the Bench Press only.

TODAY, was her first day of using a new prosthesis and she came to the ABC to workout. She did some Clean & Presses, light Farmers Walks, and also walked with an empty Yoke on her back. So frickin awesome! She was thrilled to lift strongman equipment again, and I am so happy for her!

Here is Ali doing some light Farmers Walks. She buckled near the end of the video, but let me tell you that she ended up finishing the course after I stopped recording! She just had a hard time learning how to walk with the prosthesis today, but her spirit was uplifting.

I hope others can draw from Ali's spirit and never give up despite great circumstances.

Hey Higamonster!

GREAT thread!

I am not the strongest nor the most talented lifter ever. I will never be either and i accept that. But i LOVE lifting in all its forms and shapes. I started out lifting PL style, loving it. I added some strongman training into it lately. Car and tractor pulling, logpresses (you may remember my custom painted log in another thread).
Lately i have been doing farmers walks for fun in the gym. Just db's, pick them up, walk. On advice of BrickbyBrick (Kellee) i started out pretty light. Last time i tried them i picked up 90lbs db's (our biggest and most awfull; thin and long handle) and walked them for 100 yards without much trouble.

So, my question: my brother is pretty good with metal and is offering to make me some farmers handles. I have seen some vids and comps and there appears to be no real set of rules for them. I have seen torpedo's, blocks...
Personally i think i need to make them a bit long, so they are awkward in turning. That is a big part of the walk, right? And i think a good starting weight would be 40-50kg? I will make them in such a way that weight can be added.
Any tips on form / shape / weight?

Thanks for following my thread and the postive comments bro. I appreciate it!

Yea, make your Farmers Handles a bit long. Say, 4 feet or so?
What you can do to make it better is put some fat handles on there and make sure they are smooth. Its typical here in the USA to have 1.5" diameter handles. This will help alot.

I got 2 sets of handles. One weighs 75 lbs and the other weighs 94 lbs.
The 75 lb handle is the hardest one though cause the grip on it is so slick and smooth.

DON'T PAINT THE HANDLES! Keep it as bare metal.

Thanks, Higa!

4 feet/1.20 meters is exactly what me and my brother were thinking =) We went to a scrapyard yesterday and saw a lot of old h-shaped beams there, so the project will be rather easy. I will post pics as we start making them =) Not sure yet how heavy they will be unloaded, as we will make it from unused scrap metal. But i am looking for something around 70-90lbs. So the range i was looking for is also good.
The handles will stay smooth. My brother wanted to knurl them a bit, but i told them that part of the fun of farmers walks is trying to hold that bloody handle =)
I will test a few pipes to see what would be a good diameter for my hands for the handles. I am nearly 6 feet tall, but i got the hands of an infant girl. They are really small.
My brother has a few pipes that are 1.2 inch diameter and when i grip those, i am already not able to fully close my hand around them.

Thanks, Higa and i will keep you updated!

Dont like wasting much time, so i spent another hour on the scrapyard. With great success.
Found a nice H-beam that they are gonna cut up for me in two pieces of 4 feet.
I also found a solid axle of 3.3cm / 1.3 inch. That will be the handle itself.
Project farmers handles will start next week wednesday (my brother works in shifts, so we really have to plan days to make stuff).

Yea, you don't want to knurl the handles. When it gets heavy its more likely to tear your hands. Plus, you want to improve your grip with the smooth handles.

The axle i bought is a bit rusted right now, but once all the welding is done i will sand the whole thing and custom paint it again. The handles will be sanded and buffed. Maybe not fully to a spit-shine, but pretty smooth =)

Rotating handles... i could make those easily myself. Interesting idea. Not sure if that is a good thing for farmers tho. i can imagine that making things easier, as you dont have to struggle so much against the movements of the weight...

Hey bro,
I would work on doing your bench press twice a week. One heavy day, the other should be a conditioning day with high reps.

Space them apart so that you don't overtrain your bench press.
I also like to work more Incline Bench, cause it improves my Flat Bench alot when I do that.

Close-grips work well too, but don't forget about those Lats! Lats help stabilize the weight as you lower the bar to your chest.

Keep it up bro, cause you are a hungry youngster that has alot of potential!

I think the rotating handles would help in a event such as Hercules Hold.
I don't personally know if they would help my Farmers.

However, I think they would be great if you did light Farners Walks. I mean you don't work up to a 300 lb Farmers with them, just light sets for speed.

Who knows? Might help, but I've never tried them.

Another great way to train for the Hercules Hold, is to place an olympic bar on top of a power rack.
Place it in the middle, then hang on it for time.
The rolling of the bar on top of the power rack is similar to holding a Herc Hold, IMO.

Place it in the middle, then hang on it for time.
The rolling of the bar on top of the power rack is similar to holding a Herc Hold, IMO.

Did them today and i will admit that it was a lot harder then i expected it to be. My grip is normally pretty good even tho i have baby hands. But this was TOUGH! Great fun tho =)

What a GREAT suggestion. The idea is SO simple i would have never thought of it myself!
I bet its a killer, tho.
I will def give that a whirl.

Awesome.
You can do it with an Apollon Axle too. The rolling of the bar on top of the power rack is a bitch!

hey higa, what is usually the height for the atlas stones? is there a specified one for competition, or is it usually a contest run choice? i know it runs taller for the smaller stones, and the lowest is reserved for the heaviest, but I was wondering on what a good height to build a basic stone platform. it is a lighter stone that only goes about 260 (maybe 280).

thanks for the suggestions.

Hey Matt,
At World's Strongest Man, the platforms are as follows: 72", 68", 64", 60" and 56" tall.

You don't see too many tall platforms nowadays, only at World's.
I would just build a platform that is about 50"-56" tall. Nowadays, they load stones onto boxes that high, or they do a stone over a bar for reps.

My boxes are like World's cause I'm only 5'8" tall and I built them like that so that I could train high boxes.

You may have seen this video before on another thread, but here are my boxes. I've had them since 2003:

I haven't seen Ben in 2 years since he competed at the "Central Washington University's Strongest Man" that I MC'd last summer. Frickin awesome to see him join our team.

Airman Sosa who was doing this CRAZY exercise! I have never seen this before. Only towel chin-ups are the closest I have seen to this.

G Diesel, this boy is from your hood cause he was born in Philly!

I hooked the boys up with some shirts and sample supplements that Corporate had sent over. I still have some leftover shirts and will hand the out to the crown today at the Strongman contest. May give shirts to the competitors too, but I don't know how many of them are competing yet.

It was a HOT day in Japan for the contest. The high was 91 degrees, but with the humidity at 70% it made the heat index 99 degrees. IMO the hottest I have ever experienced out here for this contest.

We had 10 competitors (8 japanese and 2 USA). One of the USA guys was Shukin! I had convinced him to compete since he had traveled all the way from Hokkaido and that this was a once in a lifetime experience that he may want to do it again.

Corey St Clair was not taking the humidity too well. Its not this humid in the Pacific Northwest, so it was a challenge for him.
I wasn't affected by it at first, but it got to me mid-contest.

Here are some videos:

We got a chance to meet AKEBONO before the contest. He was making an appearance at the "Son's of Hawaii" food booth. This was a fuckin awesome experience for me cause he is a Hawaiian guy that was the first non-Japanese person to reach "Yokozuna" status in sumo. When he stood up, he dwarfed Corey St Clair and Muto-san!
A big mahalo to Uncle Darren that let us cut to the front of the line so that we could see him first.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV93jmFdS48

Corey and I being introduced to the crowd:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op7Kfbn--m0

HIGA doing a Farmers Walk demo. These handles sucked! Someone made them, but they were too fuckin short. You couldn't fit 45 lb plates on there cause then you couldn't fit in b/w. The handle was great cause it was almost 2" diameter but the length SUCKED.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvpCINqI7Vk

Corey St Clair doing a Log clean & press demo:

Shukin doing the Trap-bar deadlift for reps. He tore all of his callouses on this, and so did a couple of other guys.

Corey St Clair doing the bus pull with 46 people inside of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gO6VyMVwaM

We saw this small car at dinner that was LOADED with so much speakers in it, I don't know how the driver fit in his car.
Come to find out, the guy's name is Oscar and he worked at the Chili's on base and competed in the "Central Japan Bodybuilding Championship" before. He was proud to show it off to us. What a frickin crazy nut this guy is!
Look at all the amps he has on his roof...and he only uses 2 batteries to power this whole system! I got 2 different videos of this car.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJxNIFijFNk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3sN1QBMATk

Other than the heat, it was a great contest again. This is the only strongman contest that happens in Japan. 3 guys took a 5 hour train ride from Osaka to compete, so you can see that they are willing to do it.

Shukin was amazing! I was honored to meet this guy cause he is a cool dude and we got to hang out alot with him and share stories/training styles.
He was unsure if he should compete, but I told him to try it. He manned up and was hooked!
If any of you Animals are in Hokkaido, please look him up. He owns a Pizza Parlor there and is a real genuine guy. Two of his friends came all the way from Tokyo to cheer him on!

I got ALOT of pictures. I will upload them when I get back to stateside. We leave for the airport in 6 hours.

Thanks to my boy Christian Coronato for sending a great care package of swag for the ABC. Everyone loved the shirts and I hooked Shukin up with alot of those sample products. I even threw out 2 shirts to the audience in b/w events during the Strongman contest.

Are you walking too fast with it?
Send me a video of you doing it if you can.

Most times, guys will try to run too fast while doing Farmers Walks or Frame Walks and end up losing their "CORE" while walking.
This will make you stumble all over the place and lose it.
Try to hold your abs in tight while walking and take smaller controlled steps at the start, then pick up speed as you feel you got control of it.

Keep me posted and good luck with your training!

Thanks for watching my videos man. I appreciate that you like them!

I have horrible flexibility in my shoulders and wrists, but I still need to do those lifts for Strongman.
What I would suggest is to not sacrifice heavy weight for your form. Work with a lighter weight until you get used to proper pulling and using those traps of yours.

Hang Cleans force you to have good form, cause you can't just rip it off the floor and correct yourself in mid-pull.
Thats why they are good to do. Do less weight on the Hang Cleans than what you would pull off the floor.

What kind of weight are you using now for Hangs?

well the most ive ever done was 240 in highschool and im easing back into them now, im havign a hard time with 225... i can literally upright ro 135x10 times no problem so a 225 hangclean should be easy, i thinnk the flexibility issue is deff part of my problem, because that transition is where im getting stuck, also where on the bar do u grip it? i tried pinky on the pinky rings and also thumb out from the smooth part of the bar...thanks for your help in advance!

For a power clean, I grab it slightly wider than shoulder width.
That way when I rack it, its ready to be pushed up like a military press.

In strongman, the handles of a Log usually aren't wider than shoulder width. No sense pressing any wider than that.

Send me a video of a Power Clean attempt....that way we can dissect it more.

Well, I am off to Ottawa late tonight on a red-eye flight. I will make sure to update as best I can.
Its a 3 day contest and our first day of competition is Saturday at 1pm EST.
6 Canadians and 6 Americans.

USA athletes are HIGA MONSTER (Washington), Chad Coy (Indiana), Karl Gillingham (Minnesotta), Corey St Clair (Idaho), Josh Thigpen (Texas) and Brad Dunn (Florida).
Canadians include Jessen Paulin, Christian Savoie, Jean-Francois Caron and Scott Cummines.

This is the 23rd year of the "Hot Air Balloon Festival.
The strongman contest is promoted by legendary Canadian strongman, Hugo Girard. 7000 people filled the grandstands last year...truly fuckin unreal to compete with that many fans.

I was supposed to land at 9am this morning in Ottawa, but I took a volunteer bump and stayed the night in a hotel at Seattle.
Instead of leaving at 11:10pm on Thursday night, I took off at 6am today.

So for a 6 hour layover and free hotel/meal, I scored a $400 voucher from the airline. SCORE a point for Higa cause I can use that for an upcoming Strongman competition and use it to future airfare.

Anyways, we just got back from eating at the buffet.
We start at 1:30pm EST tomorrow. Will post updates when I get back from the contest tomorrow.

Raining like a muthafucka here...remants of the outer bands of Hurricane Earl apparently. Lots of lighting too.

Well, day one is in the books. It was very cloudy, windy and cold today. However we were lucky and the rain held off and didn't downpour like last night.

TRUCK PULL (100 ft): Pulled a box van loaded with two 955 lb tires in the back of it. They also flattened the front tires. I pulled it 32 seconds. There were 4-5 of us within a 10th of second of each other, so I ended up with 6th place in this event out of 12 guys.

MAXIMUM YOKE WALK (30 ft): Starting weight was 850 lbs. I had no problem with it. Then I did 950 lbs. Next weight was 1,050 lbs and I did it with no drops! After that, Hugo Girard said that we are going to do 1,150 lbs for maximum distance. I took the 1,150 lbs for only 17 feet. Thats the heaviest Yoke I have ever done. As sick as this sounds, I got 7th place in this event for walking with 1,150 lbs on my back. The winner took it for 44 feet. Alot of guys got hurt in this event (Karl Gillingham heard something "pop" in his posterior shoulder, a Canadian guy hurt his knee and Josh Thigpen really hurt his lower right back. I had to help carry Josh's gym bag to his room and I don't think he will be able to compete tomorrow which sucks.

HERCULES HOLD (hold two Pontiac cars on ramps): I am not good at this event, so I was just trying to do what I could. I actually held it for 13.23 seconds. Thats a personal best for me. The cars weigh 4,000 lbs each but I felt like it was pulling my right elbow real bad and I didn't want to risk injury.

So, I am tied for 9th place out of 12 guys after the first day. I had a good day with the first 2 events, but with the logjam of guys that were so close in the Truck Pull and Yoke Walk, it hurt the overall points score.

Keep you posted! I'm off to eat supper (as the Candians call it).

Aloha,
HIGA MONSTER

HIGA MONSTER
09-05-10, 5:58 pm
Had an AWFUL second day of competition. I need to pull my head out of my ass and come back strong on day 3 tomorrow.

1. WHEELBARROW FOR MAX WEIGHT (20 ft distance):
Starting weight was 1,550 lbs and I completed it for the 20 feet distance. The next weight was 1,850 lbs and I could only carry it for 17 feet. I was very dissapointed in myself cause I was confident that I could finish after the first attempt, but I think the 300 lb jump was not what I expected. The winning weight finished was 2,150 lbs for 20 feet.

2. TRAIN WHEEL LOAD (310, 330, 355, 370 and 410 lbs wheels. 60', 48', 36', 24', 12' away):
Hugo made us run for it this year. Running with a 310 lb wheel for 60 ft seemed so far away! I loaded the first 4 wheels and got to the big 410 lb wheel. Couldn't get that huge thing into my lap and ran out of time. Only 2 guys loaded all 5 wheels and Jessen loaded them all after it started raining! (Jessen Paulin & Jean-Francois Caron).

3. ATLAS STONES (284, 308, 338, 355 and 385 lbs to a 56" pillar):
It started to rain, so that kind of sucked, but thats Strongman for you. I loaded the first two stones with no problem and got the 338 lb stone up thinking I was high enough and MISSED the pillar ring by an inch. I was mad at myself cause I should have shouldered it to guarantee a loaded stone. After I dropped it, I could not get a grip on it again cause it was so dirty and gravelly. Chad Coy could only load 1 stone, and Karl Gillingham loaded 3 stones. No one loaded all 5 stones. The winner did only 4 stones.

OVERALL POINTS
Christian Savoie 63
Jean-Francois Caron 52
Jessen Paulin 48
Jacki Ouellet 45
Scott Cummins 42 tied
Karl Gillingham 42 tied
Corey St Clair 38
Grant Conners 35
Josh Thigpen 29
Brad Dunn 27
Chad Coy 23
Grant Higa 21

Five Canadians are in the top 5, so they are really whooping butt. Our goal is to get Karl into the top 3 so that he get can get into the top prize money.

I dropped from tied for 9th place, to last place so I need to come back strong on the last day.

Events for tomorrow are :
955 lb Tire Flip for 80 feet
270 lb Log clean & press for reps
Medley (310 lb Farmers Walk for 50 ft, duckwalk a 470 lb Anvil for 50 ft, then drag a 600 lb chain for 80 feet).

Thanks bro. I know, I'm just upset at having a decent 1st day, then sucked balls today.
The tire and Log are good events for me to do well tomorrow, so I need to make up some points there.

Hang in there Higa, What the Hell are they feeding those Canucks?

I hear you. Christian Savoie is the 2-time Canada's Strongest Man and he leaves for the "World's Strongest Man" in South Africa this Friday.

I've said this before...Quebec fans are the greatest Strongman fans in the world. They will stay out in the grandstands even if its pouring rain.

I would never see that in the USA. Not even our families would stay out there that long to watch a strongman contest. You gotta love the people of Quebec, cause they love the sport of Strongman!
Wish I could upload some videos for you, but the wi-fi here in the hotel prevents me from uploading any pictures or videos. I even tried the front lobby's computer...

The final day of competition was just completed. Unfortunately, RAIN was our nemesis today. This made conditions tough for us all, but thats Strongman for you.

1. 955 lb TIRE FLIP (75 feet):
I was paired up with the "Wolverine" Brad Dunn in this event. In true strongman fashion, we had no warm-ups with the tire and it was raining pretty good. I did about 4 sets of plyo jumps onto the tire to warm-up and some bodyweight squats. Brad started out slightly ahead of me but at the 6th flip, I saw him lose his grip on the tire. I knew I had to pounce on this opportunity and get my next flip. Got the tire up and pushed it forward with all my might. Referee said "5 seconds left" so I felt like I beat Brad. Then I look and Brad got another flip in before the time expired. I SCREAMED AT MYSELF cause I thought Brad snuck by me...however, Hugo said I beat him by 3 inches! Whew! I ended up with a distance of 64' 11" out of 75 feet.

2. 270 lb Log clean and press for reps (60 secs):
Still pouring rain and in true strongman fashion, we had no warm-ups and went straight to the Log. I paired up against "The Myth" Jessen Paulin and I got 7 reps to his 5 reps. Ended up tying for 4th place with Karl Gillingham & Christian Savoie (we all got 7 reps). Brad Dunn & Scott Cummins tie for the win with 9 reps each.

3. MEDLEY (310 lb Farmers Walk for 50 ft, duckwalk a 420 lb Anvil for 50 ft, drag a 600 lb chain 80 ft):
Still raining, but the show must go on. No warm-ups and I was paired up against Brad Dunn again. I picked up the Farmers and took them 50 ft with no drops. Grabbed the anvil and I lost my grip on it 10 ft before the line, but picked it right up and finished it. However, the chain was slick from all the rain and pulling on it SUCKED. Made it really tough to pull and the slick asphalt didn't help either. I didn't finish the chain drag and in fact no competitors finished the entire chain drag because of the rain.

Final overall placings:
Christian Savoie 94
Jean-Francois Caron 85
Scott Cummins 72.5
Jessen Paulin 67
Karl Gillingham 64
Jacki Ouellet 61
Corey St Clair 54
Grant Conners 51
Brad Dunn 50.5
Grant Higa 37
Chad Coy 31
Josh Thigpen 29

Overall, it was another great time in Gatineau. Hundreds of fans brought their rain gear and STAYED the entire time for the contest. I love that! True strongman fans!

I feel like my back is alot stronger and my grip, but I still need to work on some other areas. Stones especially and more drags. I had PR's in my Yoke and I was one flip away from finishing the 955 lb Tire. I should have done the Train Wheels with no belt cause I picked up the 370 lb wheel easily and walked 24' with it, so my CORE is stronger.

Hugo Girard promoted another great contest and truly takes care of us everytime we come here. Beautiful hotel, free meals, and transports us everywhere.

"Merci" to the city of Gatineau and to all the fans that supported us this weekend. I have tons of pictures and videos, but can't upload them here at the hotel because the Wi-fi restricts me from doing it for some reason. I will load them up when I get back home to Washington tomorrow night!

Thanks everyone. I had a good 1st and 3rd day, but so many things were inches away from other guys that seperated probably 4-5 places. The Tire Flip was so close for everyone.
The Truck Pull I got 32 seconds and the winner got 29 seconds and I still got 6th place.

I could got one more rep in the Log Press, but took too long to clean my 6th rep. What if I did that faster so that I could get 8 reps and tie for 2nd place?

Strongman is funny cause you have to good in ALL areas. Winning one event doesn't mean anything.
Big props to my boy Karl Gillingham who is 45 years old and was the highest placing American with his 5th place finish overall. Thats frickin badass!

I'm off to the airport in 1.5 hours.

What an experience...this was the HARDEST PHYSICAL THING I have done in my life.

There was so many hills we had to run and I feel like I have pulled a semi-truck 10 times in a strongman contest.
I saw a girl roll her ankle so bad, that her boyfriend ended up piggy-backing her. It was unreal.

The cargo net obstacle was hard as fuck! We had 2 cargo net obstacles, but the one where I had to go on top of a cargo net that was flat and about 20 yards was the worse. It was like doing bearcrawls, but hard to not slip through and crush your nuts on the cargo net.

After going through the waist deep water, then crawl over 3 logs, my clothes felt like they weighed 100 lbs. That made it worse to run the rest of the course.
My red Animal "Iconic" shirt felt like a weighted vest and I wanted to strip it off, but I needed to show the rest of the crowd that I was an ANIMAL and would perservere.

When I jumped over the fire pits, I almost hit a guy into the fire cause he almost stepped into the 2nd fire after I bumped him.

I finished with a time of 40 mins 47.65 seconds.
The winning male did it in 17 minutes! WTF?

I will post up my videos on the "Vids" section.
Thank you corporate for sending me some shirts for my team! It was pretty rad to do, but I think its WAY harder than the Big Climb.

Thats a cool gym and I wish I could visit it one day. Walt Gogola still workout there? My friend Adam Keep also used to workout there when he was stationed in Delaware for the Air Force.

Amazing stuff, Grant! That's a helluva race!
Still sore bro!

Awesome Higa san!
Thanks for the link, that looks like great fun..... think I might have to move back to the states, seems like there is so much cool stuff going on there.

Higa,
Do you have any technical suggestions to shouldering a stone to rack it? I can shoulder the lighter stones once i have lapped then so i can adjust my grip. i have been working on 1 timing the stones and wondered if you had any suggestions to shouldering the stones?

i hope that makes sense to you. i saw this video that you posted Stone Ladder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sX-jl0SCl9Q) and notice that you are taking it right from the floor to your shoulder in one move. thanks again for the advice.

IMO, if you are going to shoulder the stone, you need to try and do it in one motion.
Balancing it on the shoulder is the hardest part, compared to ripping it off the floor.

Don't waste time with the lap, cause you more likely to have a secure hold on the stone if you rip it off the floor.

As promised some time ago =) Copied from my journey.

------------------------
Overdue post. Almost forgot about it, because progress is slow.
Project Farmers handles.
Sorry to say some images on my phone appear to be corrupted. I have lost the beginning of the project so to speak. Me on the scrapyard with the raw materials and while they were being cut to size. Ah well. No matter.

Here we go.

The parts after being cut to size:
An H-beam, an L-beam, two different sized axles and the welding apparatus =)

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn208/shrogran/Project%20farmers%20handles/parts.jpg

This is what it will look like once the welding is done. Estimated raw weight around 90lbs.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn208/shrogran/Project%20farmers%20handles/example.jpg

Welding should be done soon. My brother works in shifts, so planning is difficult, he also is still building up parts of his house.
After the welding everything will be sanded down. I will custom paint them, except the handle, that will stay smooth.

Looks good bro, but just be careful of those edges of the beam. When you do a heavy Farmers it might scrape the outside of your legs as you either pick it up, or drop it suddenly.

Those will be grinded smooth, ofcourse. This was just the rough mock-up. After welding, everything will be sanded down, edges smoothed and custom painted (thinking about deep black with volcano red flake accents). Handles will stay smooth.
It is around 4 feet long, 90lbs, should work like a treat =)

What I am trying to figure out is that Zydrunas and Shaw were tied after the Atlas Stones.
Shaw won the Stones, and Z got 3rd.

Z apparrently won on countback, but I cant figure it out yet.

Zydrunas won Log, Whisky barrel carry, and tied with Brian Shaw for Deadlift for reps win.

Brian Shaw won the Keg Toss and Stones and tied with Zydrunsas for Deadlift for reps win.

From what I am reading, they went on a countback on 2nd places.
Zydrunas got 2nd place in the Keg Toss, and Shaw got 3rd place in the Loading Medley.

Thats apparently how Z won overall. On that countback.
Man, Shaw was so close to winning WSM!

Hello i bought an atlas stone mold from slater stones. I can deadlift over 400lbs, so i bought a 240lb mold thinking it was about the right size. I had never done it before. I have yet to be able to lift the stone. It is frustrating. I'm trying to avoid buying another mold right now....Do you have any suggestions for weight excersizes that i should do to increase my ability to lift my stone?

Thank you.

Dont get frustrated.
Deadlift strength has nothing to do with Stone lifting. You need alot of "hugging or crushing" power with your chest muscles and forearms.

If you don't squeeze the stone properly, you won't lift it.
240 lbs is the lightest stone that a guy can use in a contest, so you don't want to go lighter than that.

Chest Flyes help alot, but its gonna come down to how hard you squeeze the stone that will improve this lift.

Just another question that popped to mind.
I know there is a farm nearby that sells huge rocks. I guess from anything as small as 100lbs to several dozens of tons.
In the ice-ages all these stones were deposited here and farmers keep finding them when plowing their land.

What would be a good starting weight for a regular stone to do some lifting with it? And would i look for a stone that is 'bigger but easier to handle' or a stone that is 'lighter but a bitch to get a hold off'?
What i am looking for is more odd object lifting i guess, for overall power.

Maybe 300 lbs? A 250 lb field stone is way easier to pickup than a 250 lb Atlas stone.
The field stone has corners or edges that you can get a "handle" on, where the Atlas stone requires more hugging strength.
I think you would have no problem picking up a 275-300 lb field stone. Then as you get stronger, got get a heavier one.

300lbs? Alright, i will use that as a guideline when i visit that place soon. They have a large area outside where all the stones are gathered, so i could ask for a 'weightclass' and give it a go.
I wanna start out with a riverstone, just to get used to the movement and picking up odd objects. Maybe even walk around with it like a husefelt stone.
Atlas; maybe in the future. Some more spinach required =)

Mistake was made by the person who shot the vid, brother! He already said in the link he was not sure about the weight.
Even so: my answer stays the same: pretty solid lift.

Pick up a river rock and see if you can lift it. Then weigh it. That way you can judge if its too heavy to train with or not.

Thats why Tyler loved the "Civic Stone" when he found it. It looks almost like a Husafeldt Stone!
