I came in at 193. You're right I will have to revamp my diet come next contest.
Yea, thats way too low bro.

You want to be on the top end, but focus more on your conditioning so that you don't gas out in a contest. I know I'm a heavy guy that will weigh at 303 lbs but I am proud of my conditioning and thats very important to me.

Winning one event in a contest doesn't mean shit if I gas out in the next 4 events. Know what I mean?

Entered my first contest on July 9th. I wondered if you had any tips for an axle clean and press event. We have to clean it once, and then rep it out. Will that be similar to a clean with a standard bar? I just wondered if the fatter bar changed anything in your cleaning technique?

Thanks for the help.

Grip will be a factor with cleaning the Axle. If you got a real strong grip, you will be fine and that will save you time so that you can get more reps instead of wasting time trying to get the Axle to your chest.

If not, you need to do a Continental Clean. That takes time, but if you can master doing it quickly, you can get more reps in.

Do you have an Axle to train with?

I may get to train once or twice with a fatbar, but no axle. I think that my grip strength is fair. I will look into the continental clean. Thanks.

Its not bad to do...just more of a technique and cardio issue.

I'm going to be straight up with you. Right now I don't feel like I'm ready to compete because I don't think I'm strong enough. I'll give some numbers to give you an idea of where I stand in terms of core lifts. There is one gym in town that I know has atlas stones but i don't know what else they have. I work out mostly at my firehouse cause I'm tight on money and the firehouse is free.

3 rep max
Bench: 315
Deadlift: 475
Squat: 450
Bent row's: 250
Military Press: 200

I agree with Excessive...those are pretty good numbers man.

One thing you will have to work on is Grip. Seems like you have access to maybe using some old firehoses that you could drag a sled or plate across a field with. Thats really tough to do, even a 45 lb plate.

Also work on your Anaerobic Conditioning. Alot of guys that Powerlift have a tough time doing a Medley that includes flipping a tire 10 times or dragging a anchor chain. When you gotta go balls out for Max Reps in 60 seconds, it can be a shock.

Work on your overhead press more. Strongman pressing events are all overhead.

Keep me posted!

I think with the numbers some are hitting nowadays, I let my ego get to me. I think I focused too much on what others were hitting and and not focusing on what my own goals are. My personal goals are based on excellence, not perfection. Perfection leaves no where to go. Excellence always has room from improvement.

I'll definitely work on those. The competiton I want to compete in is in the spring of 2012. Don't have an exact date yet. It's a novice competition. I found one in the spring. Some time about march. It's a novice competition held in the same town I went to college. I'm really stoked about it. Theses are the events they had last spring so it might be different this time around.
-bus pull
-atlas stones (probably 170, 235, and 280lbs)
-circus dumbbell press
-fingal fingers
-prowler sled push

The Bus Pull and Prowler events will work hand in hand for you. Make sure to use the low handles on the Prowler because that will simulate an actual truck pull.

Stones: Try to get a hold of some or practice with some. You can't simulate a stone lift in the gym with weights thats why.

Fingal Fingers: this is a tricky one but you need to work on single-arm tricep strength but the most important is your leverage and keeping your hands close together as you stand the finger up. Don't "monkey bar" your hands as you lift the finger.

DB Press: you can simulate this in the gym but it would be nice to get a fat handle DB or you a FAT GRIPZ handle and slip it onto a heavy DB in the gym.

I went out to a local park that had a large creek running through it with some good sized stones. I picked up some and carried them from the water to a tree that I would say was roughly 100 ft and then back to the water in case park rangers complained. I enjoyed the hell out of it and got some curious and stange looks from hikers. As soon as I said "ever seen world's strongest man?" people started putting 2 and 2 together. A little kid even picked up a small stone and followed me! lol

Higa I read your article on lifting stones again for about the third time. Man I want to go and find these stones and lift them. I tried to explain what it meant to lift these stones in the cultures in which they exist to a friend of mine and all the they said was "that's cool." It's not about cool! In these cultures it's proof that you were becoming a man! That's freaking huge in a lot of cultures! It was never about how much you could lift, it was about proving that you were a man. It was an honor. Some people just don't get it.

Hey Higa, Got a question on stones. What's the best way to protect against stone rash?
Tough one to call bro.

If the stone was made poorly, it will be rough and tear the shit off your arms if it doesn't have a smooth surface.

If the stone is smooth and made well, you are not squeezing it hard enough to lift the stone off the ground.
After a while, you kinda develop a thicker skin on your forearms from lifting stones.

If not, you can invest in some Stone Sleeves. Shaw Strength makes some AWESOME ones and they are the same ones that Brian Shaw uses in competition.

Hope this helps your training!

Hey Higa, I'm into powerlifting but I'm looking to improve my all over fuctional strength by doing some strongman training. Plus it's hella fun!!! I've got a partial telephone pole for flupping and tossing in the yard. I'm getting tires from the farmer across the street for flipping and hammering (I'll have to wait until next year to play with those because of the snow we'll have in the yard). I'm making my own Farmer's Walk handles this weekend too. My question is when it comes to stones, any tips for finding good ones to use? Any types of places to look for them? And what other equipent can the DIY guy make when it comes to strongman?

Can you post a video of you trying to lift an Atlas Stone? Send it to me via PM if you want bro. I would love to see your technique.

Even if the stone is rough, you still have to squeeze the stone. If your not squeezing hard enough, you are cheese-gratering your forearms.

Stones are tricky to make. If you want to make a set, you want to invest in the Slater Stone molds.
If you get a hold of some molds, find out if you know anyone that works in pouring concrete walls or driveways. if your buddy has some pull and can take the molds and pour any excess concrete in your mold, its badass! They can even insert the Stinger into the mold so that the concrete settles and you can fill in more.

Field stones are good for training too! I'm sure you can find some near a river there in Wisconsin during the summer.

Do you have a keg? You can fill a keg with sand and water and use that for Overhead training.
How about a thick bar?

Great question bro.

Thanks Higa. Those molds are EXPENSIVE! Damn! I found a place that supplies everything from gravel to big ass paving stones for landscape companies. I'm gonna see what they've got for big stones. I've also got a guy that lives on my road that own his own concrete company, so I might talk to him and see what we can come up with... maybe find a way to make our own molds! If we can come up with something I'll post how we did it. I've already got my old brain working on it...

I made my first stone like that.

Honestly, it was the worst stone ever made. If you can find someone that is good with making fiberglass molds, thats your best best.
You need to vibrate the outside of the mold so that all the lining is smooth. If you don't do that, you are gonna have a gravelly, cheese grater of a stone skin.

Another important thing to do is swab the inside of the mold with diesel or motor oil.
That way the stone "pops" off when you take the molds off. Or the cement will stick to the inside of the mold.

Bro,
So sorry to not respond earlier. We had snow and ice storm issues here in WA and I lost power for 2 days then it was a clusterfuck to just post on the FORVM.

Deadlift and Bench Press are pretty clear that you need to train for that.
Tire Flip: how much does that weigh? I'm suprised its only 25 feet. Thats barely 4 flips?
Axle Press: you need to train this on Bench Day. Get a hold of a gym that has an Axle and make sure to get used to cleaning that.
Farmers Walk: Straps? WTF? For only 30 feet too..if you can do this without straps, I will be proud.

Will check out your training sessions...

No worries about the late reply, i have been following your other posts and Mr. Dead's situation so I knew you would eventually. The straps for farmers walk is the first thing I said to Big Al....It looks like more of a fun thing rather than a true contest, I'm wondering if I should drop weight or just go and have fun...

I would drop weight IMO. You are 207 lbs now? You think you can weigh 200 in one month?

These weights are nothing compared to the Yokota contest you did in Japan when I first met you!

ever try any of those crossfit/strongman workouts? i did the stone grace with a 100 pound stone. thats 30 reps of clean and press with the stone in 3:24. it was one of the hardest things i have ever done with the stones and i loved it. i can see using it as a test every month or so to see if my training is working....

I weighed in at 209 this morning after a day of irregular meals, I was 211 just a few days ago. I really haven't been doing more than like 10 mins of cardo, so I think if I just add cardio to the mix I can/will drop the weight by the contest.

Do you think I can just get 1 3/4" galvanized pipe to make my own axel to practice on? It's the thickness of the part of the bar you put the plates on an olympic bar.

Do you have a "how to clean an axel" video?

An Axle is 2" in diameter, not 1 3/4" bro.

IronSport Gym in Philly has Axles at their gym. You should go over there one day to try it and practice.

I will try to see if I can find a video for you...

The 2-11 ABC is there so I will hit it then, I think the 1 3/4" is the inside diameter of the pipe, is the axel thicker than where the plates sit on an olympic bar?

Thats perfect! I have always wanted to go to IronSport.

The Axle is the same diameter as the end of an Olympic bar and just as smooth.

Get sport specific with your cardio.

You are doing a Strongman contest so do sprints, sled drags, tire flips, stair sprints, prowler, etc.
That way, you are going to be firing for this contest and will be in better Anaerobic Condition then your competitors.

They were on the same flight as Seath308 and me to Minneapolis too and I got to introduce Ben to them.

After further review...HIGA MONSTER and Seath 308 will be competing in the "USAPL Raw Nationals" (Killeen, TX)
August 3-5, 2012

Seath and I will compete against the legend Brad Gillingham in this contest.
2 Animal athletes lifting against an IPF world champion. Texas will not be the same.

This is fuckin nuts because I really feel that Seath308 and I can bring alot to the Raw powerlifting table and its truly an honor to compete against Brad.

The other goal I have for this contest is that Brad told me if I can get a 200 Wilks formula, I would qualify for The Arnold "GNC Pro Deadlift championships" in 2013.
How fuckin badass would that be? ANIMAL athlete pulling on the main stage in the Expo...I can see it now.

The Wilks Formula is used to detemine who was the Best Lifter.

http://www.powerlifting-ipf.com/fileadmin/data/wilkscalc.htm

For example,
I weighed 140.6 kilos BW at the last USAPL meet. I pulled 340.5 kilos in the deadlift.

If you enter those into the calculator I attached above, I get a Wilks of 190.1352
For me to get a Wilks of 200, I need to deadlift 360 kilos or 793.6 lbs to qualify for the Arnold.

That deadlift is based on my bodyweight of 140.6 kilos at the time I competed against Seath308.

Shukin
03-09-12, 10:45 am

Higa,

Would tire flipping be a good alternative to halting deads or deficit deads when trying to promote strength off the floor (as opposed to rack pulls which promotes lockout strength?) What do you recommend as far as a rep range/weight in comparison to one's 1RM on deads? What about snatch grip deads?

Thanks in advance and thanks again for all of your help at the Arnold and ABC!

Wedge: I'm not Higa, but the massage therapist at my chiropractor's office showed me an amazing back flexibility technique that has worked wonders for me and allowed me to unstick my deadlift progress.

Carry 2 tennis balls with you in your car. Sit tight against your seat, and wedge (see what I did there?) those tennis balls into the problem areas on each side. For me this is the muscles surrounding the L4-L5 area. My massage therapist also indicated that I had tight glutes and recommended positioning them there; I also on occasion sit on them for this and I can definitely feel it. I have a half hour one way commute each day, 20 minutes from work or home to the gym one way, and my girlfriend lives 2 1/2 hours away from me, so I have a LOT of opportunities for back therapy time.

Also, I highly recommend that ALL lifters find a reputable chiro and get a full workup done, and maybe some adjustments and trigger point massage therapy. I injured my back a year ago, and after resting and trying various things, this was what allowed me to start training heavy again, and the tennis ball technique is giving me that last 5% of therapy and preventative medicine to where I almost don't notice the back any more. Now if I could just fix my knee...

Personally, I think tire flips are more like a Snatch or explosive Front Squat. Not deadlifts.

Tires should be treated as an exercise that increases workload or improves your conditioning.

You can just use a 450-500 lbs tire to start.
Try flipping it for 10 flips as fast as you can. When you decrease your time to finish the 10 flips, its time to do a slightly heavier tire or add more flips.

Wedge,
You can even use a PVC pipe when you are able to handle that. Just get a 4" pipe thats about 1.5 ft long.

I would rather use a PVC than the foam roller because it strips it down better on my muscles & fascia.

Hamstring stretches are important for you too man. Don't forget glutes and hams either.

I will look up some stretches for you. I am flying back to Seattle today from a business trip.

Higa and crew,

if I was going to get a tire to start working w/ what do you think a good weight would be? I almost pulled 405 on the deadlift (will have it easy next time). I am going to use my parents to start training the tire and farmers walk. I also need to work on grip strength, wondering what are the best tools to increase this.

Hey Trebin,

What I would suggest is getting a tire that weighs between 450-500 lbs.
That way, you can learn the proper technique of flipping a tire. Then later on, you can try a heavier tire.

You want to focus on flipping that tire for 8-10 flips. Make sure you time yourself each time, cause I want you to do it in 60 secs or less.

For grip, try to invest in a Axle or some Fat Gripz and throw them on your bar or dumbbells. You were at the Cage this year, so you saw what you can do with an Axle during my seminar.
Worse comes to worse, you can do Farmers Walks with dumbbells.

Keep me posted on this bro!

I now just have to find out where to get a tire and what kind of tire weights in that range. So if anyone knows hit me up lol. The axle would be great but I would have to buy it and bring it to the gym every time I wanted to use it and w/ my small car that would be a huge pain in the ass. The fat grips may work out best. I don't have dumbbells or any weights for the house so I was just planning on getting 4 plates and the 2 ecnono bars from Elite FTS and leaving them out there. I also watched the video on using the 4 plates together to replicate a stone. This is the plan as it stands right now...I have a buddy or two that may come out on Saturdays and train which would be fun as hell.

Look for a place that has, rents, repairs earth movers, call and ask them, if you can pick it up they will most likely give you an old one, saves them the money of disposing of it.

Any local tire company will gladly give you a tire for free if they cannot sell it.
Its because they have to pay for the disposal/shredding of the tire.

The tire company can most likely look up the original weight of the Tire when it was brand new, then you have to assume how much it weighs after worn out use.
Or you can take it to a large pallet scale to know the actual weight. Radial tires are much heavier FYI.

Imperial Crossfit with Higamonster 3-23-2012
Holly shit!
So, we get to Imperial and Higa runs me through an awesome warm up routine, proving that I need to improve my flexibility. Then he guides me through my 5/3/1 squat workout, helping me with my form, showing me on video how I am not leaning back far enough, educating me on how to train my central nervous system from the lighter sets all the way up to the heavier sets to insure better form.

Then comes the prowler sled on turf, with two 45lb plates to the tire, not sure the distance, but I wanted to impress.....much much different on turf, the friction, I reach the tire and come back, pretty proud of my self. Then he moves the tire and has me go from hashmark to hashmark and back, pretty darn winded by this point but still functional. Them the sadistic fuck has me do it again....Higa's 3 year old daughter wanted to go to sushi so bad she was running beside me cheering me on, Higa was on the other side cracking the whip, both of them helped me succeed.....but no celebration, I was walking dead, leaning dead, laying dead.....utter dog shit! And pure entertainment for Higa. I have no idea how long it took me to recover, but I didn't puke...came close.

Wow, what an intense workout. I had not felt like that since I played ice hockey in high school, unbelievable. When Higamonster posts the video you will see what kind of shape I was in.
Todays lesson, conditioning and flexibility.
If I had a comfort zone, he took me out of it for sure.

Thank you Higamonster

The goal was to teach him some Dynamic Warm-ups that he can use back at home.
Inchworms was a real humbling warm-up for him and he was tripping how tough that was for him. I made him do 10 reps.

Then, he did some Plyos and actually jumped on the 36" box really easy for 2 jumps x 2 sets.
He also wanted me to critique his Squat form and I showed him that he needs to keep his chest up more on the heavy sets and work on his flexibility on his hips, glutes.

Finally, he finished with 3 sets of Prowler pushes on the turf. What an eye-opener for him.

That sucks. If nothing else, you'll have more time to achieve fullsterkur status. Do you have any goals set for your deadlift this spring/summer? I think I heard you saying you have a chance to quallify for the deadlifting championships if your Wilks score was (200)?

Yeah man, if I can pull 783 lbs based on my BW of 309 lbs, I would qualify for the "GNC Pro Performance Deadlift Championships" at the 2013 Arnold.

I weighed 309 lbs at the USAPL State meet vs Seath308. Thats based off that BW at the time.

I got a call from this kid, Max Broburg 5 months ago.
He is a Senior at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle and he wanted to do his Senior Project on how to put on a Strongman contest.

Max trains at "Seattle Strength & Power" where we have had a Seattle ABC before, and the gym owner gave him my email so that he could ask me questions.

We are supporting him and will be in Bellevue, WA this Saturday to help him promote a Strongman contest!

Imperial CrossFit has donated our strongman equipment to help with the events.
CrossFit Amped is hosting the contest in their gym for Max and will also provide Tires and Sled Drags. All the competitors have to do is sign the Release Form.

HIGA MONSTER will be on hand to help & possibly do a strongman demo.
PROSTRONGMANZACK is also coming to referee and do a strongman exhibition.
Jim Wallingford Photography and Goldielocks will be there shooting photos for a couple of hours.
"America's Strongest Woman LW" Kristyn Whisman will compete.
And we even got a few guys driving 3 hours from Vancouver, WA to compete for Max.

Please come by to support if you are in the area, so that Max can get an "A" on his project.
Alot of members at Imperial CrossFit plan to be there for support.

Here is a question for you...what kind of shoes do you wear when you are doing your stone workouts? I only ask because i tried out my nike romaleos today as i wear them when i front squat, and had the best stone workout i have ever had. i actually shouldered a 240, loaded a 270 over a bar, and managed to stand up with a 310. i felt locked into my position...does that make any sense, or is it in my head. lol

I just use Hiking Boots bro. They are Merrils. LOL

It makes sense though for you because when you lap a stone, its similar to a Front Squat. Maybe thats the right shoe for you in that event?
However, it might not be the right one if you had to do a Stone Series. I say that because i dont know if you can run fast in those type of shoes.

It works perfect if you are doing Stone over a Bar for reps.

I just like to have a tight, ankle supporting boot when I do Stones.
I know I can quickly move in them without slipping.

thanks for the quick reply. i can see where the romaleos would not allow me to move quick for a stone series. i have never had the chance to do one for a competition yet, as most at my level seem to be a stone over the bar event.

Aloha,
HIGA MONSTER
Turned out to be a GORGEOUS day in Seattle today and we had a great contest for Max Broburg.

4 women and 8 men competed.
My training partner, Kristyn Whisman was a Middleweight but she wanted to do the HW Women weights and slayed them!

It was a dogfight in the MW Men. The winner won by a half point!

Guest lifting was done by PROSTRONGMANZACK and amateur HW Mike Kromer.
Zack cleaned and pressed a 360 lbs Axle at 240 lbs bodyweight!
Kromer pressed a 400 lb Log and almost fought that lockout for 5 seconds. So fuckin awesome!

HW Pro strongman Andrew Palmer stopped by to support. He is a lean & mean 360 lbs.

Justin Randal also came by to cheer everybody on.

A big thanks to CrossFit Amped who closed their gym down today so that Max could host this contest. They were glad to help when they heard it was for his Senior Project and that all donations would go to Children's Hospital of Seattle.

What Olympic lifts are most important to strongman events?

You know I train at a local crossfit gym and determined that my front squat needed to be worked on. 6 week went by and my front squat went up 50 pounds because of technique work and mobility work. I was just wondering as to what I should concentrate on next...

Thanks for all of the stone help too! I never thought I would get that 240 up, and now it is easy. I have really been working my hip drive and see how important that is for that event.

Grant,

Thinking of trying out the fat bar, but I'm into bodybuilding so I'm not doing strongman training. Do you think this is still a good idea for someone in my position? I heard it makes your forearms a lot stronger and has other benefits, so this appeals to me.

Definitely bro.

For a Bodybuilder, you can use the Fat Bar for bicep curls, bent over barbell rows, light deadlifts and either Shrugs or Upright Rows.

Be sure to lighten the weight a bit because it will be hard to hold onto any normal weight that you would put on a normal bar.

Good luck cuz!

Thanks bro!

One more thing. Just realized that the fat bar in my gym feels kinda light. Like it's lighter than a normal 45 lb barbell. I'd estimate 30 lbs? It's hollow. I'm not sure if this is normal for a fat bar, or if thats the wrong kind of fat bar?

Thank you brothers and sisters of the FORVM for your support.

A big thank you to Animal and Universal Nutrition for allowing me to become a better strongman. I will never forget that.

Pictures will be up later tonight. I have 3 softball games to attend and then need to pickup my CR-V because yesterday morning at 5:30am, I was woken by neighbors and a Cop who told me someone broke into my car.
They caught the fucker in the bushes a mile away and he said he was "siphoning gas" and had a rap sheet that included 10 arrests of narcotics, car prowling, etc.

So I was pretty fuckin jacked to take my anger into this contest and slay the events as hard as possible.
It paid off. And now my name will be on the trophy/plaque that honors one of the greatest strongmen that ever lived, Jesse Marunde.
I bled with Jesse, laughed, had a drink with that fucker and I miss him all the time.
So to win this show in his hometown, as he was watching us from heaven sipping on a whiskey, is one of the greatest achievements for me.

Jesse Marunde, Phil Phister, Foster Parnell, Marshall White, Nick Best and Karl Gillingham's name are on this plaque.
Add the HIGA MONSTER and the Animal Nation to it. We own the plaque for 1 year.

Once I figure out if I am moving or not I am going to start getting a hold of some strong man shit to work w/ on Saturdays. If I move I still don't know if I will be in a house or apt so I will just have to play that by ear.

You should send him a shirt with a picture of you posing. Maybe that will get him motivated to send it.
