NO MUSIC, YET I HEAR VOICES
When I train, I hear nothing from the outside world. When I’m in the ZONE, it’s just me, the IRON, and the VOICE. Most people don’t train like this, they spend their time talking, flirting, and getting in my way. And, that’s when the VOICE speaks, with a tone of a bellowing lion.
“What a useless bag of shit,… this guy is.” The VOICE says.
“You should break his face!” The VOICE says. I find myself nodding in agreement, while I push out another gut turning set of mind blowing reps. At that moment, that poor guy decides to ask me, “How do I get big like you?”, and before I can answer he bellows out a bombardment of other questions.
“How much you bench.” He says.
“I knew he would ask that damn question.” chuckles the voice,… I laugh in agreement.
“What supplements are you taking?” He asks.
“Of course, that fucking question would be next.” Says, the voice,… and like a puppet I agree. And before he continues on with 21 questions, I stop him silent, “When was the last time you did legs? How much do you squat? And are you ready?”
He answers quickly, “Last week… 405… For what?” But he finishes I bark out orders.
“Here’s what your going to do, your going to perform a giant set, first you’ll perform leg press at 5 reps of 85% of your max followed by Hack Squats at 12 reps of 75% max for a total of three. Then, you’ll perform leg press at 5 reps of 85% of your max followed by lunges for 40 reps of 40% max for a total of two times ending with your leg press again. And if you have the BALLS perform 1 minute of body weight squats.” I command while he stares at me, blood leaving his face, and he nearly pisses him self as he walks away, with his tail between his legs.
“I gues he can’t cut it…” The VOICE says,… and I agree.

RECAP--- LEGS: exercise 1 & 2 performed 3 times followed by exercise 1 & 3 performed twice, ending with exercise 1. If you still have the guts, rep out bodyweight squats for 1 minute.
LEG PRESS 5 REPS/ 85% (EXPLOSIVE)
HACK SQUATS 12 REPS/ 75% (RHYTHMIC)
LUNGE WALKING WITH DUMBELLS 40 REPS/ 40% (SLOW)

I think we all have some sort of voice. For me it is my first trainer, my father. He's been dead for 10 years, but on lifts that are specifically troublesome, I hear him "no bullshit, get to work". Most of the time, I nail like I did when he was there

i have something like that too, its just myself, but in a rage just trying to pump myself up, "you aint shit motherfucker" works well.

No Music, Yet I Hear Voices
PART II

The drive is short, but my skin is crawling with anticipation. I turn off the radio to my car, a 1990 Honda Civic, because it’s a distraction. I hear the calming rumbling of the overused motor while I drive toward the awaiting storm of a gruesome shoulder day. One of my bodybuilding mentors told me a few months ago to build a little more development on my delts. The closer I get to the gym, the more the VOICE begins to awaken. I feel him turning deep in my psyche.
“You ready!?” the VOICE bellows in my head, causing it to ring in my ears. I’ve almost forgotten how much influence he has on me.
“Yeah.” knowing that today will be another blood flowing awakening of my body.
I grab my belt, which smells like fresh leather. It has a cold feel to it that comforts me. I know IT and the VOICE are my only allies when I walk into the gym. I stroll in passing up the "resolution flock of 2007", making my way to a hole in the wall that I’m going to call home for the next 45min.
“What do you have to do today, son?” The VOICE roars in my skull.
“I’ll start with military presses, followed by lateral raises to front and side. And continue on with…” I say before he cuts me short with, “Let’s get to fucking work,… you don’t have all day.” I nod in agreement.
I load, a large EZ curl bar with a few 45’s because the straight bar was missing today. I launch the iron up to my chest and take a seat and begin pressing, I follow this with lat raises to the side and front. No breaks for me, I keep moving, it’s not a giant set, but I need to fry my delts into growth.
I feel the presence of eyes starring at me, while I go through my madness.
“Don’t look at those fuckers, your better then them, stronger, and bigger. Get your mind right and lift this damn weight.” the VOICE orders and I nod in agreement.
That’s when he strolls up to me, his name is Jared.
“Are you a bodybuilder he asks?” while I’m resting between the last attack of iron I went through. I said yes while I feel the lactic acid burning through my shoulders.
“I want to become a bodybuilder, I’ve just got back from a mission for my church and I want to compete. I have a degree in sports / exercise, but I don’t know what to do.” I look him up and down: 6’3” 240lbs and about 30 pounds of extra shit on him.
“He does have the potential, but it doesn’t matter you got to have the mind for it. He looks too fucking soft.” says the VOICE.
“We’ll see about it.” I say and begin another growling set of exercises. Jared then loads the squat rack with some weights.
“So, this guy wants to work his legs today. Lets, see if he can handle a true workout.” says the VOICE,… I nod in agreement.
I walk behind him and tell him to start with 20 reps,… you see I’m a leg guy.
He begins and reps them out, slowing down at rep 15, but when you have 185 on the squat and your 240lbs then I guess it is easy. Once he completed the weight, I tell him to perform body weight squats,… I want him to flood his legs with blood.
“ You want to be like us? Your going to have to work as hard as us!” the VOICE and I say to him. He looks at me through the mirror wondering why I said “us”, but I don’t care. I walk over to the smith machine, to prep it for hack squats. Nothing bets old school.
“Alright, your going to do the same weight for 20reps then walk over to here and do 12reps of hack squats, and follow with 20rep bodyweight squats.” the VOICE and I echo as one.
“I can’t,… the weight is too heavy and I feel like I’m going to puke.”
“If you want to waste my time, then I’m done, but if not lift the damn weight.”
Performs the reps with me spotting him for the last six, and he staggers over falling on the a bench like he’s on his last breath.
The gym is quite now; most of everyone is watching me train this guy. They all can see him turning from red to green in the face, but I don’t care.
The VOICE and I yell, “Do you want to be like them?” pointing to the on lookers. “No, while their out drinking, your training. While their just doing bicep curls and bench press, your going to be repping out 600lbs on the leg press. This isn’t a fucking game, it’s more then a sport, it’s a lifestyle. You want us to train you then you have to make,… life style changes.” He finally gets up and finishes and partially finishes his set.
Finally we move to the leg press. “I want you to perform 8reps on leg press followed by 12reps on leg extension then do a drop set to 20reps. You’ll do this 3 times, and then go home to your family a changed man.” Sure, he says, but let me get some water…

He never returns…..

THIS IS THE ACTUAL EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM HIM THE NEXT DAY:

Hey, this is Jared Whalen. I sent this email to both your hotmail and this email address, so if you read the other one, don't bother with this one. I am that guy who you helped exercise tonight. Anyway, I am sorry I showed you a lot of disrespect today. You told me to do something and I didn't do it. I promise you, it won't happen again. The next time you say, "go untill you puke and then come back," I'll do it.

I thought about how much I want to do a bodybuilding show and if it is worth the level of training you introduced today. I decided it's worth it, so I still want to go for it. Anyway, my work is from 9:00 AM till 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. I can switch my schedual to work out at any time around that. 4:00 AM sounds fine with me, so just tell me when you want to start and I'll come.

Also, how much do you charge?

Thanks Ransom for helping me hear my animal voice.

Ransom,
Thanks for the inspiration bro.
I read your writing a few days ago, right before I headed to the gym for leg day. I didn't follow your workout, but I pushed myself harder in mine. REAL hard. When it was all said and done, I had to sit in the corner for a few minutes to recoup so I could drive home. I was stumbling around like a drunk, my legs hurt so much.
Had to go home and reward myself with a whole chicken for dinner.
Thanks.
