well i recently had some lower back issues after deadlifting..tried to self remedy it and it didnt work out so this past friday 12/18...i went to the chiropractor and he is almost certain i have a bulging disc in my L4L5....i have to go back to him today for another visit and to be honest i'm scared and nervous.....it doesnt feel much better it doesnt feel any worse either though...but i just dont want to have my training affected by this.....can anyone chime in with some of their past stories and success with healing and moving on lol thanks

No disrespect to the chiro, but go to your general practicioner and see if you can get referred to get x rays. Spinal problems are not something you can shrug off and "not have it affect your training". Bulging disks dont heal themselves like a sprain or strain. See a doc, and that is what everyone is going to tell you.

not to freak you out man....but you need to see a neuro surgeon, maybe have an mri...chriopractor is a quick fix and not long term...and believe me you dont want to suffer any permanent damage to your back.

like my dude Fury stated, you wanna hit up x-rays.. the last thing you want to do is chance any kind of injury, especially a possible spinal injury.
Get to your Dr. and get checked out, good luck bro..

I have a great bone bender and have had success with having her get me back in line.

Bottom line is that we are all different and don't hestitate to get additional opinions and do what you NEED in order to get better.

Your training should take a back seat to this issue with your back until you get better. To continue working out is not a smart idea and increases your chances of more damage to your back, see your doctor. Good luck,

Kevin

hey bro
I have not trained since august now due to a very painful back issue. I have tried, chiro and accupuncture. I just got my MRI results today and my discs are fine. The MRI says everything is fine (but I know it isn't, may be a tight muscle spasm). If I was you I would get an MRI ASAP, or x rays (I know healthcare in the USA is not free, so whatever you can afford) and just hold off until you find out the real problem. I have been DYING to lift, and will be starting soon, but trust me, after waiting 4 months and losing 20lbs of hard work, I would rather know that when I start again my back will be 100%. Your back is not something to joke about!

good luck man, let us know how it goes.

Mind over matter is a big one with any lower back pain.

I recently found out I had 2 degenerative, nearly diminished disks and a torn disk which were causing spasms overy now & then & nerve pinching. It scared the hell out of me, i almost lost my mind. But with some talking to others who are much stronger and worse off then myself I decided this wasnt going to hinder my progress whatsoever. So I laid off squats for a month or so, made sure to ice a ton to keep any swelling down and now Im already back to squattin almost 4 plates..(deads will come in time, lol)

All youve got to do is work around it. Tighten up your technique on lifts, hit your abs hard and reverse hypers if your back allows.

Remember you cant keep a true animal down. Pm me if you need anything further.

Short back ground, Broke a vertebre and bulging discs in L4-L5-S1, somehow in 2000-2001. Don't know how. Went through alot of PT and finally got xray which led to MRI, leading to surgery in late 2006. You can train with a bad back. Just have to support yourself more than usual. With your back workouts, You need to do supported rows. Support on your chest. Weight will drop a little, but movements are the same. Pre exhaust back before you do deads. Dorian Yates did them last so he was not putting so much weight on his spine. As far as Bicept curls, the weight will be pulling you forward and will put pressure on your lower back. Standing curls will not be comfortable but you can do them first, then finish them off with preachers and seated DB curls. I have had no problems with anything else. Except Legs. Squats, stay low weight, high rep, I do 6 sets of 20 with weight between 135 to 185. Move on to front squats ATG. All the way down. If you have a press machine, it is so nice to have cause you can go heavier. I recently got to go home from the desert and jumped on a press and was able to put up close to 700 for reps. Next day, back felt great. Everyone is different, so you have to be the one to say you can do it or not. I fully agree with everyone, go to your dr and get an xray to see if you have any visible signs of damage. Heat worked great for me, and not much pain meds work. I have even had shots directly in the spine which did nothing. I may be a bad case, but I fully watch what I am doing in the gym. Take a look at my journey and see the exercises I do. Hope they can be helpfull. I have grown about 15-20 lbs in the last 4 months since my come back. You can grow. Good luck.

Hope you get a second good report.... The anti-inflams can be a godsend, but just remember to "train smart".... I know from experience that it's hard to "back off" when you KNOW what you are normally capable of doing. It's for the best to ease up a bit, and it MAY take "going through the motions" for a session or two to get you back to "normal".... Best of luck and keep us posted!!

tell your chiro to order an xray and mri that will b able to tell if your problem is disc related for sure

it wouldn't have healed in 5 days if it was a disc herniation you most likely had a pulled muscle or a postural imbalance that was corrected on its own or through therapy ie spinal manipulation

and why the hell would you go to your general practitioner for a spinal injury and to get xrays when the chiro can have these done himself....most gp's would just refer you to a specialist anyway...any chiropractor i dont care how bad they are knows way more than any general practitioner when it comes to the spine! Chiropractors are doctors thats why it is called Doctor of Chiropractic so he is seeing a "doc"

this is a bullshit statement...his back is fine so i guess he should just go see a freakin neurosurgeon...get some painkillers and go get some surgery.thatll just fix everything...so when you have rods in your back and you are bedridden while recovering you can look forward to having a limited range of motion for possible complications the rest of your life..since when is chiro a quick fix and not long term? it is conservative healthcare about fixing the problem not just covering up the symptoms like most drugs do

Good to hear. It still doesn't hurt to see an MD rather than just a chiro. When it comes to your back you want to make sure you're right and not f yourself up worse. Don't pu$$ out again thinking about what it could have been. Suck it up in the future bro. I've been there with the injuries but it does no good to focus on the negative until there is something to worry about.

It depends on the chiro, some are complete quacks and some are good. Which one do you have? Everybody thinks their guy is the best but they don't know until it's to late. Get more medical opinions and hope there is a consensus.

obviously there are good chiros and bad ones but why the fuck would you go see a neurosurgeon right away im sure his insurance would cover that with no referral? and since when is chiro just a quick fix?

Though I don't have any personal real life experience with a chiropractor, I would certainly consider less dramatic measures in initially remedying an issue I had before a neurosurgeon. Though I need to better practice what I preach, I'd consider a holistic approach that involved any available options that were affordable--including chiropractic, seeing an MD and sports-specific massage therapy.
