I figured that after coming back from the Arnold, it was about time I started up a Journey here. I had an absolute blast this past weekend, and after meeting Skiba and his crew, and seeing what they do, it lit a new fire under my ass. It's time to hit some big numbers. I've been training using the Westside Template for about the past 3 weeks, so if any other powerlifters/people who have used it in the past want to hop in, critique, offer anything, it would be greatly appreciated! So... let's get to it.

3/8 ME Lower

Rack Deadlifts:
5x135x2
3x225
3x315
3x365
3x405
1x435 (I have to train at a Bally's this week, and I can't use chalk, and I refuse to wear straps, and this bar was total shit; I should have been able to triple this).
1x465
1x500
1x530
1x550

Seated Good Mornings:
10x135
10x155
10x155

Dimel Deadlift (I freaking love these):
20x135
15x135
15x135

70º Leg Press:
20x1 pps
10x3 pps
10x4 pps
8x5 pps

Done and done. DE Bench tomorrow.

3/9 DE Bench

This is the one day that I probably need the most work/help with. I think I might be going a bit too heavy for my work sets, but I'm still maintaining explosiveness on each rep, so we'll see.

Speed Bench:
3 x 135 + 50lbs chain x 2
3 x 185 + 50lbs chain
3 x 205 + 50lbs chain x 8 with varying grips (wide, regular, close)

2nd Pin Lockouts (Close Grip):
3 x 225 + chains
3 x 315 + chains
3 x 335 + chains
3 x 345 + chains

Leg Press Row:
10 x 1 pps
10 x 1 pps + 25
10 x 1 pps + 25

Freak showed me these at Metro over the weekend. You basically load the weight onto one of those horizontal/sled leg press machines and row it. It does not let you cheat one bit.

DB Side Lateral superset Hammer Curls:
10 x 20lbs 8 x 30lbs
10 x 20lbs 8 x 40lbs
10 x 20lbs 8 x 50lbs

3/12 DE Squat

Box Squat Week 3 (Box puts me ~1-2 in. below parallel):
5 x 135 x 2
3 x 185
3 x 225
2 x 260 x 10 with 45-60 seconds rest in between sets.

Speed Deadlifts (Did one set conventional and sumo for each weight):
5 x 135 x 2
5 x 225 x 2
5 x 275 x 2

Poor Man's GHR:
8 x BW
8 x BW
8 x BW

Front Squats (Slow going down, pause at the bottom, explode up):
5 x 135
5 x 135
5 x 135

Barbell Calf Raise:
30 x 135
20 x 225
15 x 315

Weighted Decline Crunch (All done holding a 25lb plate):
20
20
20

There is nothing better on this planet than getting under the bar and squatting. After having my knee reconstructed, it was the one thing that I feared the most. Fuck fear. I now embrace squatting like no one's business. After those sets of box squats, I was almost euphoric. I had the entire gym to myself, so Judas Priest was blasting the entire time. I'm also still not sure if I want to pull conventional or sumo; still gotta figure out what works best for my taller frame. I've currently pulled 520 x 1 conventional, and 485 x 2 sumo. I'll have to mix up stances every now and then, and see what I can do.

Next week starts diet and cardio on a regular basis. Shit.

Today was just an awesome day for squatting. Everything just clicked. The 520 (570 at the top) felt awesome. I wanted to go heavier afterwards, but common sense took the better half of me; I'll smash this PR another day. I was going to do a couple sets of Dimel Deadlifts, but my hams were already pretty cooked, and I wanted to have some gas in the tank for glute hams.

Simply. Awesome.

The 5/3/1 is gonna take some getting used to. I enjoy it though.

I'm currently 6'1", 236. I've been on a cut for a little less than a week. I went from around 215 to 246 over the course of a few months, so now the plan is to chisel away at it for a while. I don't really have any sort of target weight in sight; I'm just looking to build up my cardiovascular system a good bit.

Current 1RMs
Bench: 340
Deadlift: 520
Squat: 430

I'm not really sure what's going on with my squat. Put a box underneath me, and I can just ramp up the weight (as yesterday's workout indicated). Remove it, and I turn into a little bitch. I'll get it squared away eventually.

3/16 Pt. 2: Attack of the cardio

Ultimate Frisbee. Hour and a half. I thought I would be a dynamic go-getter, and ride a bike there. Unfortunately for me, the only settings on my roommate's bike were "Anger," "Hatred," and "Malice." It's only a two mile ride from my apartment to my school where we play; damn were my quads pumped by the time i got there. I also forgot how unforgiving turf is; I've got a couple of fresh marks.

We'll see how good the legs are for tomorrow. If I can't get an early morning session in, I'll easily be able to get either an afternoon or night session in.

These provide 135lbs tension at the top. The mini bands provide 90lbs, and the light bands provide 180lbs, so this is a good mid-way point. I'm gonna be using them for my DE Bench day, as well as for some speed deadlifts.

3 x 135
3 x 185

Yates Row:
15 x 135
15 x 135

It has to be comfortable enough to hit 15-20 reps with speed and explosion. In the video, Tate said that doing 315 for 20 is a 900lb squatter (which I *clearly* am not). If I wanted to go heavy on some kind of partial, I'd just do rack deads.

Plan for the rest of the week: Rest. I'm taking off until next Tuesday before I hit the weights again. I have Thursday, Friday, and Monday off of classes, so my school's gym isn't going to be open, so I'm going to take advantage of this like a motherbitch, and get some quality down-time in. So glad to be back in there. I was welcomed back by having to wait a solid half hour or so after I got into the weight room for an open rack, which really made me happy. Our football team works so fucking slow in there, I can't believe it. Also there's this one particular individual, I'll call him Captain Biceps; he does arms at least three times a week, and wonders why he isn't getting any stronger or bigger. I have never seen him squat, or do any compound movement for that matter. The second wave of football drones gets in there from 4 - 5. I usually start lifting around 5:10 or so. I started today at 5:30, and finished around 6:20 or so. He was still there when I left.

4/7 Cardio and Captain Biceps

Kicked the hell out of my Bio exam (normally a 3-hour class, I finished the exam in 30 minutes), so I had a lot of free time on my hands.

30 minutes on the cross trainer. This might be my new favorite cardio machine. Afterwards, I went down to the weight room, and had a little Captain Biceps moment of my own... except I was there for about 20 minutes, instead of two-and-a-half hours.

4/8 ME Bench

Floor Presses:
5 x 135
3 x 185
3 x 225 - each set from here I had 50lbs chain.
3 x 250
1 x 270
1 x 280
1 x 290

Close Grip 1st Pin Lockout (all with 50lbs chain):
3 x 225
3 x 275
1 x 295

The 295 was odd... somehow, the chains on the left side got caught on a bolt at the base of my lifting platform, so I kept pushing and pushing, but it wasn't going anywhere. I had locked out the right side, and the left wasn't budging. As soon as my training partner kicked that chain off the bolt, I locked it out damn quick, but was spent after that, and didn't go for another.

Plate Raises:
15 x 45lb
15 x 45lb
15 x 45lb

superset

DB Rear Delt Raise:
15 x 15lb
15 x 15lb
15 x 15lb

Lat Pulldown:
10 x 150

15 x 175

Done and done. Resting up tomorrow, in preparation for the ABC on Saturday. Big weights are gonna be moved there with Rob, and we're gonna rip Flower a new one on Rack Pulls.

Speed Bench (against Monster Minis, doubled):
10 x bar x 2
5 x 95
3 x 135 x 8 varying grip

OHP:
No x bar.

After the first rep, I felt this sharp twinge in my rear delt on my left arm. Racked it. Moved on. Not risking anything.

Bent Over Row:
10 x 135 x 4

Curls:
Yep. I did some.

Popped a couple Amino Max right after, then did a 20 minute incline walk cooldown. I'm hoping this shoulder thing should go away in a few days; I think I got slammed pretty hard in one of the basketball games yesterday, or it could have been a result of going stupid heavy on rack pulls (pulled 635, most I had previously done was 550). Either way, I see ice and rest in my future.

Down 20lbs with no strength loss..awsome work man..

What weight did you start at,and what are you now??

What kind of diet you following??

What your cardio like??

Keep up the awsome work bro!

I started at 246, sitting around 225 now. As for the diet...

Meal 1: 6-8 whole eggs
Meal 2: 8oz chicken/turkey/beef/fish and 1/3c brown rice or 1/2 sweet potato
Meal 3: 8oz chicken/turkey/beef/fish and 1/3c brown rice or 1/2 sweet potato OR 50g whey (Pre-workout)
Meal 4: 50g whey (Post-workout)
Meal 5: 8oz chicken/turkey/beef/fish and some greens (usually broccoli or green beans)
Meal 6: 8oz chicken/turkey/beef/fish and some greens (usually broccoli or green beans)
Meal 7: 40g Casein shake before bed

And then at the end of every week I give myself a day to basically gorge on whatever food I want. My meals are of JUGGERNAUT proportions.

I try to get my cardio in when I can. Most of it comes from either playing Ultimate Frisbee or basketball on campus. But typically on the weekends, I'm able to get in some more "conventional" running in, which is nice.

As for me... I'm taking this entire week off of weights. It's finals week at school, and I'd much rather ensure that I get all of my stuff done, and graduate :P

If I get some free time, I'll end up getting some cardio in or something.

Thanks Tommy! Time for the *cringe* real world.

Thanks Phil! It was a real sprint to the end of the semester. I ended up having to do a shitload of work, in not too much time, but I got it done.

Congrats on grad, bro... And Cum Laude! I struggled for a 3.0 hahaha.

It was kind of funny. I was looking through the little graduation program when we were all seated in the gym, and I saw that CL next to my name, and I was just like "Oh groovy."

Good luck on entering the working world in this economy -- I don't envy you. On the other hand, you're in a good field, and that "Cum Laude" is a plus.

Very solid chest work -- I wish mine were that good.

My lower back felt like someone hit it with a truck. It's been that way for a while, so after this workout, I decided I'm gonna change up the routine a bit, and for maybe the next month or so, switch to a body part split, to hopefully take a lot of strain off my back (it was hurting when I was trying to get an arch for bench). So today...

5/13 Shoulders and Triceps

Smith Barbell Press:
10 x 135
8 x 185
4 x 225
4 x 225
3 x 225

5 x 250
5 x 250

Tricep Pushdown:
15 x 150
15 x 110

15 x 130 drop
10 x 70

DB Skulls (all done slooooooooowly):
10 x 20s
10 x 20s
10 x 20s

I had my first "pump" in God knows how long today. It was interesting. We'll see how I feel about this lighter weight stuff while I rehab my back.

Now my main concern is waiting to hear back from the doctor's about my brother; he was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, so now we're waiting for pathology to get back to us on what treatment(s) he's gonna have to go through. Things around the house have gotten... interesting, to say the least.

GReat looking work! Keep pushin'! (But take care of the back, of course -- my own personal mantra)

As for the lymphoma diagnosis: The doctor told ME I had lymphoma back in November; then no, it wasn't lymphoma, it was Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia in December, then when those tests came back negative, it was Idiopathic Polycythemia.

What that means is that my bone marrow produces too much blood and they don't know why. They can't fix it, so they're drawing off a pint every month. Go figure.

Moral of the story: Don't accept the first diagnosis. Get another opinion, and demand to see the test results and to have them explain the standards by which they read the tests.

Best of luck with your brother.

I see. He's had a tumor pushing on his right eye for a little while, and had a biopsy done last Thursday. That's when they gave us that news. We've got another meeting with the Dr. this Thursday, so hopefully we'll find out more then.

Thanks, Jim. Just trying to kill it day in and day out, just as you are.

And yeah, floor hockey for me has proven to be a great form of cardio. There hasn't been a time yet where I've returned without a sweat-drenched shirt.
