So, the Sequim Strongman Showdown has come and gone, and the Boise Fitness Expo.

Time for a new journey...I took 1 week off after the Boise Fitness Expo demo. Just hit the bag, and did alot of mountain biking down in Black Butte, Oregon last weekend.

Gonna just hit a maintenance workout, till I decide which contest I want to do next.

I got a few things on my plate till the end of June:
1. I am the MC for the "Washington's Strongest School" contest this Sat 5/22.
2. VEGAS!! nuff said...
3. I promote my own contest on June 12th, "Washington's Strongest Apple".
4. 8 day Mexico vacation at the end of June. "HOLA BITCH-OLA!!!"

Went to the Warehouse today and hit a good workout with my friend Steve.

PRE-WORKOUT DRINK: Shock Therapy

PALLET JUMPS:
Worked up to a max of 35" tall on the pallets. Did 5 sets of standing doubles.
Felt really good to do these again, and get the Central Nervous System firing.
My goal is to standing jump onto a 40" box, which is a PR for my 300 lbs ass.

AXLE CLEAN & PRESS EVERY REP:
99 lbs x 10 reps x 5 sets
143 lbs x 10 reps x 5 sets

FARMERS WALKS:
184 lbs each hand. 80' each way, turn every 80' for a total of 320 feet.

ATLAS STONE:
205 lbs x 10 reps onto a 50" box. 2 sets of 10 reps

POST-WORKOUT DRINK: Torrent
Then, ate a Proteon bar on the 30 minute drive home.

Aloha,

Worked out with my clients at work...

Pre-workout drink: Shock Therapy

30 MINUTES OF SPARRING:
3 minute rounds, with 1 min rest in b/w.
Client caught me with 3 good right hooks to my body...my left rib hurts!

BRISK STAIR WALKING (north parking lot of Qwest Field):
The staircase is 40 steps tall.
Skipped steps the whole way, every 2 steps with focus on pushing off the heel instead of on my toes.

RESIST A BALL CRUNCHES:
4 sets of 25 reps

Post-workout drink: Torrent sour citrus

Sometime next year, my roommate from college is the Sous Chef there .. He has been there for about a year now i would say .. I would def love to get up there. I saw him over the weekend for his wedding, and he was telling me about this 60 mile dinner they do. Basically everything on the menu for that dinner HAS to come from within 60 miles of the restaurant. That includes getting salt water, boiling it down, and using the fresh salt from the ocean. Sounds like an awesome event.

I'm excited to workout at Mark Philippi's gym this Sat morning with Brian Shaw and Odd Haugen. I have never been to the "Philippi Sports Institute".

For the first time, I visited Mark Phillipi's gym in Las Vegas (Phillipi Sports Institute). This place has been open for 4 years.

Hooked up with Odd Haugen, Nick Best and "The Mammoth" Brian Shaw.
Odd is 60 years old, but still one of the best vice-grips in strongman. Shaw was frickin HUGE: 6' 8" tall and 408 lbs. Nick lives there in Vegas.

Here is a funny video of us driving to the gym...Shaw was so huge in Odd's car:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zKDQM5j8E

We just decided to just do some overhead, so Log Press was the choice.

Me doing 308 lbs for 2, missed 3rd rep. I was fuckin tired, so I'm sorry for this shitty video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT9IcStC7iU

Nick Best doing 1 3/4 reps. We gave him shit for not locking out his elbows. LOL:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pTHScTOnio

Brian Shaw getting 4 reps with 308 lbs. He is getting ready for "Norway's Strongest Man" at the end of June:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sabVyTHv4YY

In the gym, Phillipi had these Indian Clubs that I have never used before. Only seen them on video. Had to try them! They weigh 25 lbs each.
Sorry, but I don't know how to rotate the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ-50gjl3I0

Odd Haugen doing a crucifix hold with the same Indian Clubs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqSXd3KCo2Y

Those Indian Clubs were a trip! I guess there is a kettlebell guy that brought them into the gym, and he does circles around his head and shit. Its supposed to be a shoulder burner!

Pre-workout: Shock Therapy grape

AXLE CLEAN & PRESSES

Another slammed day, but I had an hour to kill and get something done.

60 mins of hitting the heavy bag. (3 min rounds w/1 min rest in b/w)

8 sets of 25 crunches on Resist a ball, supersetted with a 40 sec Plank in b/w.

Brought my Torrent, but not my shaker bottle. What a dumbass...
Had to take 2 tall coffee cups from the Starbucks next door and mix water & Torrent back & forth like a mad scientist.

Slammed it down though!

4 days left till the Strongest Apple!

Paid a visit to my tire sponsor, TDS in Auburn.

Checked out my tires that they are providing for me this Saturday at the "Washington's Strongest Apple".
FRICKIN AWESOME.

Flipped a 875 lbs tire that my HW competitors will be using. Great grip on it, and its a new retread.
They also had a 910 lb tire that was AWESOME too. I don't think anyone would finish that though for a 100 feet.

Ate a Hi Protein bar (S'mores) afterwards.

Sheesh, I haven't filled this out in a while.
Was so busy getting ready for the "Strongest Apple" I promoted, then went on a 8 day vacation.

Storm grape (pre-workout)

HYPERS:
25 reps x 2 sets

2" AXLE POWER CLEANS:
84 lbs x 6
143 lbs x 4

Felt great to Front Squat again. I want to do at least a 330 lb log press for the demo next week.
Will be wearing the ANIMAL shirt proud while I press it too.

225 lbs x 4 reps
315 lbs x 2 reps
345 lbs x 1

455 lbs x 5 reps. Paused the last rep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvjN-sBKKsM

Another great workout with my boy, Zack Nims in the 91 degree heat of Maple Valley.

Shock Therapy grape (pre-workout for both of us)

PLYOS (30 " box):
5 jumps for 5 sets

14" LOG CLEAN & PRESS FOR REPS:
180 lbs x 3 reps x 2 sets
200 lbs x 2 reps
220 lbs x 2 reps
Then, I used Zack's bands for 240 lbs x 1 reps, then I tossed the bands & clean/pressed for 5 more. The focus was to strict press all the reps.
Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhe-7CpdGt8

Here is Zack doing 180 lb empty log with bands. Zack only weighs 235 lbs.
His 4th rep was UNREAL gut check. Especially with those bands trying to throw his form off cause he almost fell back off my platform.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTiVP15QZ84

Check out this cool Front Shoulder Raise exercise he thought of using my Power Blocks and a cheap moving company rubber band that cost $2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItTfCx5xM_M

600 feet total distance FARMERS WALKS:
This shit sucked, especially doing it on the hot asphalt. 160 lbs in each hand, but the handles are 1.5" diameter and smooth as silk. Hardest handles we train with, so the light weight is a bitch with these handles.
I thought I was walking through a mudbog on my last 300 feet. I felt like I weighed 500 lbs and had to also carry weight in my hands.
Higa's Farmers Walk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjS2MvlO0TM

I had 1 hour break in b/w clients today, so I did some stair running at Qwest Field where the Seattle Seahawks play.
SO FRICKIN HOT in Seattle today, that it was 94 degrees at 6pm outside the gym across Qwest Field.

I ran underneath the "Hawk's Nest" in the north end zone.

Shock Therapy grap (pre-workout)

STAIRS:
40 steps up, then ran the same section down.
I did this for all 13 sections seperated by handrails under the Hawks Nest.

Does this make sense? Running up and down like a serpentine pattern for each section.
Finished it in 18 minutes.

Went back inside the gym and hit 50 crunches for 4 sets on a 55 cm resist a ball.

I met Ali McWeeney last year when I was the MC for the "Central Washington University's strongest man/woman" contest. She won the women's class, and you knew she was special. She was so gifted, and I thought that with practice she would be a great strongwoman.
July 4, 2009 she lost her leg in a boating accident. I found out when I returned from a Mexico vacation. One of my clients sent me a link cause she was pretty sure I knew this girl in the story.

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/50627812.html

I visited her in the hospital and despite being drugged up she told me, "Grant, I am going to compete in your show next year."
Last March, she competed in a USAPL meet and did the Bench Press only.

TODAY, was her first day of using a new prosthesis and she came to the ABC to workout. She did some Clean & Presses, light Farmers Walks, and also walked with an empty Yoke on her back. So frickin awesome! She was thrilled to lift strongman equipment again, and I am so happy for her!

Here is Ali doing some light Farmers Walks. She buckled near the end of the video, but let me tell you that she ended up finishing the course after I stopped recording! She just had a hard time learning how to walk with the prosthesis today, but her spirit was uplifting.

I had a 1.5 hour break today in b/w clients, so it was so nice and hot in Seattle I took the cardio outside today.

SHOCK THERAPY GRAPE (pre-workout)

SPRINT 75 YARDS UPHILL/WALK DOWNHILL:
There is a hill off 10th avenue & Dearborn street that has a nice grade to it.
The goal was to sprint to the top, then active recovery as I walk back to the bottom.
Lather, rinse, repeat...

10 sprints total (did it in 28 minutes)

HIT THE HEAVY BAG IN MY GYM:
Decided to change it up today...made up a crazy interval.
1 minute of hitting, then 30 secs rest.
1.5 minutes of hitting, then 30 secs rest.
2 minutes of hitting, then 30 secs rest.
2.5 minutes of hitting, then 30 secs rest.
3 minutes of hitting. (this was a tough interval!)

Haha! This is awesome...I never thought I would get a questions like this cause I'm a strongman and not a bodybuilder like most of the bros on this Forvm.

Here is what I ate yesterday:

Mornings usually start with a cup of coffee.
1 hour later is when I will have breakfast of either oatmeal or whole grain toast w/peanut butter. This is when I ingest my Paks too (Animal Pak, Animal Flex & six 100% Beef Aminos). All of this was washed down with a shaker bottle of Real Gains.

Mid-morning: banana and a Hi-Protein s'mores bar

Lunch: ate a plate of Panang Curry chicken w/brown rice. Plus, popped 6 more tablets of 100% Beef Aminos.

Mid-afternoon snack: Proteon bar (I frickin love these. Peanut butter things are my weakness!)

Dinner: Sushi. I love to eat raw salmon, hamachi and maguro. Popped 6 more tablets of 100% Beef Aminos.

Animal PM before bedtime.

Haha nice one!

I am a bodybuilder also, but I am a strong believer that strongman and powerlifter training is what builds the base of a bodybuilder physique in addition to all of the gay isolation and assistance exercises that we do lol.

Food is food man. And we all need a lot of good quality stuff....be it bodybuilders, powerlifters, strongmen....all cut from the same cloth IMO.

Would i be correct in saying that you aren't a huge eater? Not that its a bad thing as you are a still a strong bastard; just making an observation.

Also, I dont see many greens, fruit or any other veg in that diet...what would your mummy say!

Keep smashing it up. Peace

HOT, MUGGY DAY in Seattle today. 84 degrees at 6pm when I left work...

I had a 2 hour break, so I wanted to get some good sprints and plyos in the nice hot day.

Shock Therapy grape (pre-workout)
Foam Roller for a good 25 minutes (IT bands, quads, glutes)

JOG:
For 1.5 miles around the north parking lot of Qwest Field. (its just over a 3/4 mile when you run the outer perimeter of the parking lot.)

SPRINTS:
Used the handicap stalls again.
Sprint 50 yards, then walk back to start.
sprint 60 yards, then walk back to start.
sprint 70...
sprint 80...

Later, rinse, repeat for another set.
Did 2 sets total of sprints.

CURB PLYOS:
Hop up & down the sidewalk curb quickly for 15 hops.
Hopped straight forward for 15 hops,
then hopped laterally to my left onto the curb for 15 hops,
finally hopped laterally to my right onto the curb for 15 hops.

JOGGING:
Ran another 1.5 miles around the north parking lot of Qwest Field.

STAIR CLIMB SPRINT TO MY GYM:
I think its 45 steps, but don't quote me on that.

Met the usual suspects at the Warehouse this morning at 7am.
Newest Universal athlete "Big" Ben Rice drove up from Aberdeen to meet us for a workout! He left his house at 4:40am and got there with Excessive about 7:30am.

I haven't seen Ben in 2 years since he competed at the "Central Washington University's Strongest Man" that I MC'd last summer. Frickin awesome to see him join our team.

Eddie is right. An axle is 2" diameter.

Thats actually a homemade Axle.
I'm telling you all, if you want to make a decent Axle, just buy some 2" thick stock and buy a welder friend of yours some beer.

I bought an Axle from IronMind, but we also have that homemade version.

I actually don't know cause my friend Rocco made it and he used to workout with us.
I would assume so.
Make sure its stock that can withstand multiple drops with weight onto the floor.

Good deal, Ive been looking around for some extra stock at my job but havent found any suitable pieces yet. I can then weld it up on my off time.

Another thing to consider is to use a bead that has a higher impact resistance.

My first Log & Farmers Walk handles that I ever had made is a great example.
The welder had me bevel cut the end caps on both implements. That way, he could fill it with more beading to ensure that it can withstand multiple drops.

I've had those pieces since 2000 and they are still solid. Never had problems.
The welder was a guy that worked for a company here in Seattle that makes Self-storage security gates and Railroad Crossings.
It was the best 18 pack of Coors Light I've ever spent!

Mad props to my 6.5 year old daughter who rode all 16 miles with her Mongoose bike and doesn't have gears like me and my wife's bike.
It was HOT yesterday and that made it tougher on the way back.

Took us 53 minutes to bike one-way 8 miles.
Then we had a little water & snack break in the shade for us and proceeded to head back to the car the other 8 miles.
It took an hour & 12 mins to bike back the other 8 miles because it go so frickin HOT that I didn't think my daughter would mentally make it back.

She did though and I'm proud of her cause that ride kicked my ass. I can't imagine how tough it was for her with no gears.
The return trip was more uphill too.

Gorgeous day in Seattle, so had to take it outside.
Plus, its not as frickin hot as it was in Japan!!

SHOCK THERAPY wild-punch kicker (pre-workout)

STAIR RUNS (39 steps up to the top):
Run up and down for 10 sets (390 total)

PLYOS ONTO A BENCH underneath "The Hawk's Nest":
5 jumps x 5 sets w/1 minute rest in b/w then,
3 jumps x 5 sets w/1 minute rest in b/w.
Totalled 40 standing jumps onto this bench, AFTER running stairs.

RUN UP THE STAIRS AGAIN TO THE GYM for another 39 steps.

TORRENT ZERO (post-workout)

The bench is kinda tall for me, because it comes up to my hip. Not sure of the exact height, but one day I will bring a tape measurer and find out.
Had a funny compliment that 2 ladies were walking by and said, "that's pretty darn good for a guy your size." LOL

Haha! The bench is made of stainless steel or aluminum.
I should take a video next time and measure it.

The bench is found at the gates on this picture, but you can't see it. They have these all over the north gate area.
I just wanted to give you an idea where I do stair runs and where these benchs are located.

I don't think its torture.
I think its a great way to get your nervous system "firing" and it will transfer well to Strongman.

Cool link, but man the shipping is high!
I need to find a welder friend and see if he can rig something up like that, because I got a tow hitch on my Honda CR-V.

When you back in town?

I'm home now just been busy the last two weekends. I got about another two weeks home. Good idea on the welder. I'll check with a couple guys from work. Best of luck this weekend in Ottwa.

WHOLE BODY VIBRATION MACHINE: 10 minutes

205 lbs x 6 reps video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmTwg6PdfwU

I was going to do 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 with 205 lbs, but it was too much weight.

155 lbs x 5,4,3,2,1 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_59ANtLW8-A

I wore the appropriate shirt today. If any of you have not tried a Javorek Complex, you should.
I was a pussy today cause you are supposed to hold onto the bar the whole time, and I didn't do that after the squats.
However, I am trying to save my grip for the contest this weekend.

Later! Holla at your boy...

Staff photographer Alan Berner had alot of fun taking pics of me today. He had never seen a place like the WAREHOUSE with so many unorthodox stuff to lift.
He just started that column "Northwest Wanderings" at the beginning of this summer, and it has gotten rave reviews.

I was wearing my black "ANIMAL" t-shirt during this shoot, so hopefully there will be alot of shots with our logo being shown proudly.
This bi-weekly column will be in the actual newspaper, and will also be an online version.

He took some videos too of me flipping the tire and dragging the chain.

As soon as this gets posted into the paper, I will forward the link.

Yea, sandbag training is no joke. The one thing about the IronMind sandbag is that it gets kind of slick after picking it up multiple times (perspiration).

The next time I do that drill, I'm going to lay it on its side and pick it up that way.

Hmmmm. Interesting. I was going to use an old sportsbag i have for this kind of training... but i am pretty sure that one will also become pretty slippery when wet...
Is that really a no-no for sandbag training, or just something like 'not handy, but deal with it'?

Its fine but just be aware that it will be tougher to pickup as you sweat on it during a workout.
Also, watch when you drop your old sportsbag. The material may split on impact with all the sand in there.
The IronMind sandbag is pretty tough so that it doesn't do that.

You can always patch the bag with good old duct tape.
That makes it even MORE slicker to grab.

I have had that "YOU SUCK" sandbag since 2001. Thats how awesome duct tape is. :)

I used to train with it to simulate a Husafeldt Stone thats why. We would set the sandbag on top of a keg, then pick it up and carry it.
9 years and more rolls of duct tape later, still going!

Like I said, its an old Army dufflebag. It can last a while, but expect some splitting after time.

I can learn from this, With my schedule I am often pressed for time, the speed/intensity looks like the way to go.
How many days a week are you working weights and how many doing strong man stuff, looks like you got a busy schedule of family, work, contests, etc. Yet you always seem to get an intense workout in.

3 days a week: weight training
1 day a week: Strongman events (usually Sat mornings)

I am flying back to Vegas tomorrow night, so i wanted to get some Deadlifts in before flying.
If I am in a pinch, I'd rather get volume in rather than max weight. We can get alot done in 20 mins if you apply yourself accordingly.

I'd rather get 20 min Circuit Training in rather than not workout at all and beat myself up cause I didn't suck it up and train.
