It's been talked about on here a bit, the whole concept of a meat head. That anyone that big must be utterly and completely incompetent. People who dabble in the sport of course know this is the opposite of whats real. The first time I read anything by Animal Pak, it was Wrath's "Bound by Blood" article in a muscle mag, the couple first pages. It inspired me so much that I cut out both sides (picture of Wrath and the article) and put it in my family room in the mirror. To remind myself every day of what I wanted to become. I had some people stop by my house, come in, sit down, and go what the hell is that? The first thing they did was start cutting down Wrath and saying things like "why would you want to look like that?" and "what a meat head". They talked about how he was probably thoughtless. And when you say that about something I admire and want to become, that shit is a DIRECT insult to me... I was gonna teach them a thing or two... I took the article and told them to read it. One of them is really into writing, they were astounded. He went on for about 5 minutes telling me how great it was, and how much of a meaning it had and the use of words and on and on. I said, "oh really, you like it? See that guy you're looking at? His name is Wrath, HE wrote that.
They haven't said a damn thing since.

that stuff is not even.....aaargh it makes no sense. shit guys already think that about me. and well my I.Q is top 5% of the population so dont give me this Bullshit meathead crap...
bodybuilders are true prophetic gentleman. you cant tell me after a session of hard and heavy squats you havent thought something truly intense and full of depth...bodybuilding is like any other sport where total discipline is needed.
except the level is perhaps slightly above others, nowadays i tell people straight what i think about them and what they think about what i do. if they cant accept me i wont accept them. simple.
im lucky to have my family accept i want to be a total freak...

I got a story like that too. My girl at college didn't really understand why I do what I do. She didn't understand the lifting until I puked, eating foods I hate so that I can grow, and keeping away from the college bullshit that people fall into. When I ordered my first can of Animal Pump and the Chest dvd, I ordered a couple of the posters from here, too, from the Journey because they hit me hard. I got the "The Power of One" poster and the "Bound by Blood." I posted them in my dorm room and when she came to hang out she wanted me to take them down. I told her no, and to read them. She did (believe it or not!) and she got really quiet. She started to understand.
It's the fact, like Wrath, G Diesel, and everybody else here has said, that people think we don't or can't think at all....when our problem is the exact opposite.

One of the cool things about this forum, Animal and Animalpak.com is what's been said here in this thread--the mind need not fear the body, and vice versa. Here, the thinking bodybuilder can flourish.
Shit, we all got stories to share... Like I said in my log, bodybuilding is philosophy. It is a fucking bildungsroman, a record of one's growth morally, intellectually, and yeah, physically... Fuck it, we don't have to prove ourselves to anyone...

You have to understand and look at it from their perspective... If you are so much their physical superior and could snap their neck like a twig, don't you think it might be a little bit of a shot to their fragile ego if you are also twice as intelligent? I wrote about it before in Diary of a Madman...

Let them underestimate you. The term “meathead”… I embrace it in the same fashion members of a particular race, ethnicity or creed adopt a slur or hateful moniker. On one hand, it is a positive, because it lumps you in with those of a noble ilk. It means that off of a mere visual assessment “the normals” have identified you as a bodybuilder. You cannot hide from what you are nor would you if you could. The time you have devoted to crafting your physique has paid off. You are what you chose to be… Mission accomplished. This for me, however, will never be enough. As Picasso once stated, “My mother said to me, "If you become a soldier, you'll be a general; if you become a monk, you'll end up as the Pope." Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.” This mind frame, arrogant as it may be, is the only way to approach every facet of life. Let those that do not know you judge you… Welcome their scorn and stereotyping, knowing in your heart that you are so much more. They paint you as stupid and vain, shallow and insecure. You are bigger and stronger and as such they must chop you down to size. Use their prejudice to your advantage. To them, it is OK for you to be physically superior, for they assume that this is your solitary dimension. God forbid they discover that you are also articulate, humble, educated, worldly, motivated and well rounded... Even, dare I say, more intelligent than they are themselves. Use your physique and the preconceptions of the small minded to gain the upper hand. Crush their bias and at the same time crush their feeble spirits.

I go through this shit every fucking day at school. whenever I walk down the halls, I get nasty looks from others. they don't understand at my school, I'm one of maybe 5-10 kids who work out, and the ONLY one who leads a bodybuilding lifestyle. I have nobody there to relate with besides my tech ed teacher, who has done a few shows. All of the other kids say I'm on steroids, and lift weights to imtimidate people. Not that it matters but I've never touched a roid in my life and def. don't look like it if they knew what they're talking about. Bodybuilding is living. Let people talk brothers, they're full of shit.
i honestly haven't met a single bb'der who wasn't somewhat intelligent and never one that was an a-hole. since starting to lift myself, it seems there is something very humbling about lifting, something about it that levels the head and keeps us grounded. i don't even hear what others say; im not huge (yet) by any stretch, but the odd comment i get towards my size just reassures me i am doing something right.
What most don't realize is we have chosen a different path. When we walk into a room they become intimidated and feel they have something to prove because while we are puking, fainting and eating everyday they are sitting, drinking and eating shit and talking about the past to make themselves feel better. They try to put us down then quickly realize they cannot and just shrink into their beers and ask the same stupid question of "How much do you bench?"
While their diatribe works on none of us they don't realize we survive in any atmosphere or setting. We have the intelligence to sit in the boardroom or sit in the bar, it does not matter. That is what kills them because the light bulb just went on in their head that we are a different breed that can and if we can't will struggle and battle to do it all.
There is a real truth in the saying "Only the strong will survive!"

That question "how much do you bench?" really pisses me off. My bench isn't as high as it should be so it really gets on my nerves when these fuckers think they are the same as me. I've gotten used to it now... who the fuck cares how much you bench? Half of these fuckers haven't squatted one day in their life.
Wrath's entry in the journey called "Thick Skin" really put things in prespective for me.
I think a good answer for a bodybuilder for stupid questions like "how much ya bench or curl?" is "enough to get a pump."

I feel ya bro. The gym is the best therapy out there for us. And instead of tearing down our bodies, we are building them up. Its funny how nobody understands that..

The only people I've encountered that say such things are those who are too mentally and physically weak to ever be dedicated to a sport like ours. They can't fathom the work it takes, so instead they choose to bash it in order to make themselves feel good about the fact that they could never do it. Fuck em.

I agree with you 'dean, people who say shit like that makes me a bit upset. I mean I am striving for the perfect body, to look like I am cut out of stone. If people think im a meat head, which I have been called, well then fuck 'em. In no way does being big make you 'dumb', in fact a stupid person wouldnt be able to comprehend what it takes to get big, :the diet, training schedule, and that the mental mind set that it takes to achieve high goals. and most of the people that say things like this are in reality jealous because they do not have the dedication and drive to look that way.

G, I'm so glad you wrote that. That is seriously one of the most well-stated arguments I have read in a very long time.

people who call people meat heads are fucking meat heads themself. how the hell you going to judge a person without any reason? thats just stupid. plus, i think body builders are some of the smartest people on earth. I think people are just mad that that dont have enough BALLS to become beast themselves.

Both of these are well put. Sites like these let people open up and learn about bodybuilding and whats its truly about. Its more than just a change physically, it also changes you mentally.
Most people dont think about the fact that we are no different than anyone else. We all eat, sleep and breath (even though we have more dedication and will than most people do). Just because we spend a couple hours in the gym each day, doesnt me we lack intelligence. I mean if someone goes and spends a couple hours playing a piano each day, no one assumes they arent intelligent. People need to realize that we all did the same things growing up, like go to school and learn. Just because we lift, doesnt mean we lack a brain. In the overall scheme of things though, i know that lifting is what i want to do, and if someone wants to assume im an idiot because i do it, well thats there problem not mine.

The best thing I ever did when I started competitng, was I dropped all of my dead-beat a-hole friends who never gave a rats ass about me in the first place. My life is so much richer without those jerk-offs. Their lifes are exactly the same from where I dumped them...no where. I made it out alive and with flyin' colors....and they think i'm crazy....
