TRAINING for a bodybuilding contest is all about sculpting the body to look like a statue...will anyone debate me on this?
What I dont get with a lot of bodybuilders that I come accross is that they dont pay attention to DETAIL.
Detail....that is what seperates a polished physique from the rest.
It's not all about how much you can lift, how much you can eat....or how big you can get in the offseason.
Getting the body in peeled crisp condition...you should be fucking misserable...period.
Detail to training, never cheating on the diet, POSING every night to condition your self while on STAGE, tanning, taking care of your skin so it looks good....most people dont think of the posing, tanning, and conditioning of the skin.
in the end...not one judge will ever ask you....how much do you bench, or how big your arms are. but if you are not tan enough to show the condition you are in, or if you are bent over gasping for air after a round of posing....the judges will pay attention FAST.
At about 8 weeks into your contest prep, you should start tanning a few days a week.
Buy a loofa sponge and scrub your skin at least once a week to remove dead skin, so that when you apply protan, the skin wont blotch.
Never pose in front of a mirror....when you get on stage there's no mirror, and thats why you see guys with their arms real far away from their body, they are uncomfortable and need to FEEL big.
ok thats enough tips for today....i'll be back.

This is one of the best bits of advice that you've given me, Vin... It's so true... You need to FEEL the pose, what it feels like to be IN the pose, properly... On stage there will not be an image staring back at you to correct ....

Vinny... Any particular body scrub or skin conditioner that you would recommend...??? And, any advice for those of us with naturally oily skin...???
I use a mirror when posing to decide if a certain way looks better than another for me. Should I pose my quads close together or have a leg out and have a more "X" look? How far down do I sit on my hams for them to pop the most? Etc. I agree that once you get your positions right and where you're comfortable, get that mirror out. That's just my opinion, but I've only done one show so maybe I needed to do it like that. Great post!

Vinny knows all about products, I am sure he will have a great suggestion.
Back to the original post - vin is spot on. I've been to many, many contests and they are won on conditioning. I see many guys who want to come in big and/or are afraid to lose size and they don't sacrifice enough to get the conditioning they need, they never place well.

This will pay off....one of my last shows I stepped on stage, my music hit and my brain went blank and I couldn't remember my routine...thankfully I had practiced my mandatory's until they hurt so I hit them with easy transition....needless to say it helped cause I took 2nd.

i just use a body wash by old spice, any body wash will do...make sure to shower after each workout, and even after cardio and tanning.

Vinny, (Donvio)I was going to say the same. I think first few times as you are putting your routine together you need to watch how your routine flows, in the mirror, and have someone there helping. Once you get that down and you are comfy, get away from the mirrors. Solid post man!

I have found a camcorder helps alot if you havent done a show before. Then you dont have a mirror, and you can go back and see how you transition and how well you are hittin them

Glad you guys like this thread....it's what mentoring is all about.
Glad you guys like this thread....it's what mentoring is all about.
I'm taking notes...making a come back next year and this can only help.
I wish I would have known this stuff before my first show! I learned a ton after doing it though. You're a good dude Vinny, keep it up man!
A common mistake I see people doing backstage is over pumping! "Lay your ass down with your legs up and eat!" is what my trainer told me. Don't worry about the BS around you. Get ready to enjoy your 15 minutes of adrenaline (maybe). I like to visualize the details in my posing and to remember to pose from the ground up.

very good point Vinny, but many people (especially over here on UK forums) argue that its bodyBUILDING and not bodySHRINKING and that if a judge had to pick between the bigger slightly smoother guy and the smaller more conditioned guy then they would pick the bigger guy.
its all opinion i suppose. but thats the main factor i reckon. and its probably the debate that will be open for centuries to come lol

this is awesome info. many thanks! im looking to compete and this is the kinda shit i wanna be reading!
now all i need to know is what you do for carb, water, sodium etc manipulation and i will be set haha
My carbs for the last week got down to 100 for 2 days and then 50 for another 2 days then I had weigh ins on Friday. I was the first to weigh in since I had more weight to shed. I started loading right after I made weight until stepping onto the stage. For water and sodium I was drinking 2-3 gallons a day for the four days. I cut sodium the third (Thursday) day and then cut water Friday around noon. It was a Saturday show. Prejudging started at 10am. I honestly don't know if this is a good generic setup but I was bone dry. I think I could have been a little fuller though. I would love any input.
Great information for anyone wanting to take the stage. Thanks Vin.
I'm ready for the next post by Vinny! Good thread!

Its a good plan as long as it works. Some methods don't work on others that might work on you.
When getting ready for a show one must realize the important phrase...."Contest prep"
This is very important cause one must learn their body and how it responds.
This is a great thread Vinnie G

Great Post Vinny.
Many attempt but very few suceed in the process of stepping on an actual stage. Like Vinny stated, this is a process that takes weeks and weeks to prepare, both physically and mentally. It's not about going into the gym and being able to bench xyz or deadlift xyz because once you step on that stage, it will NOT matter.
Posing is what seperates the boys from the men. Just by looking at a lineup, you can see who really did their HW when it came time to pose. Having done 17 shows, I still look for ways to improve my posing and present myself better.
