View Full Version : Deep South Barbell Training...Strongman and Powerlifting

IRBS
10-19-10, 1:50 pm
What's up everybody. Figured I would throw up a log again. I havent had a consistent log here in a while, so why not.

A little about me, my name is Will and I am a competitive Powerlifter and am just getting into Strongman. I competed back in July at SPF Southeastern Regionals and totaled Elite at 275 going 760 Squat, 550 Bench, and 640 Deadlift for a 1950 Total (SPF Elite at 275 is 1946). One of my training partners and I decided we wanted to start working towards a Strongman show, so since July we have been focusing on raw strength and event training. I must say, the change of pace from a gear whorring Powerlifter to Strongman is nice, and fun. I am having fun again with training and getting into shape, which is what I was looking for.

My goals for the next year for competition are: Brute Strength Gym's Strongest Man on Jan 15th, Raw Powerlifting Meet sometime between Feb and July, and then Georgia's Strongest Man next fall.

I have my own gym called Deep South Barbell (dsbb.wordpress.com). Our current inventory is:

Power Rack and Dumbbell Bench (built to competition specs), Texas Squat Bar, 2 Texas Power Bars, Texas Deadlift Bar, around 1300lbs of Olympic Plates, 45degree Hyper, Chest Supported Row, Dip/Chin Station, Complete Band Set, a 50lbs Kettlebell, Safety Squat Bar, Axle/Fat Bar, 150lbs of Chain, a dragging sled, Prowler, Farmers Walk Handles, 10″ Log, Keg, Stones, and 450lbs & 800lbs Tires.

We have a couple more items that we need, but we are off to a good start.

This log will be a combination of my training, and the guys on our team's training. We have 2-3 guys prepping for equipped Powerlifting meets, myself and one other guy getting ready for Strongman, and we have guys who drop in every so often for a mixure of both. (If anybody wants to send us a banner to hang up, we will gladly accept, LOL)

Hopefully someone gets some benefit out of this...

Reverse Grip Curls:
3 sets of 10

Band Pushdowns:
3 sets of 25

Tire Flips:
A few with the light tire

Good session. Not feeling super strong tonight but I got some solid work in. Picked up a new tire today that is around 450lbs to mess with to go with the 800lbs beast we have. Still looking for a 650. Tim trained reall light tonight to get some blood flowing, Daniel trained over at the Lions Den in Athens and Carter is off this week. We’ve also got some DSBB shirts coming soon.

LOWER

Raw Squats:
barx10
145×10
235×5
285×5
325×10

Axle Deadlifts:
275×3

Superset:
Sledge Hammer Tire Strikes:
4 sets of 10 Strikes

KB Swings:
4 sets of 10

Band Pulldown Abs:
3 sets of 15

Really solid training session. Tim is still taking it easy but did some lift work tonight. Daniel worked up to a strong 565 box squat in briefs, his squat is really moving. I did some raw squats to warm up and then worked on Axle Deadlifts. Previously I hit 505 for a double so I was happy with tonight. I am feeling like this lift will be a decent one for me in time. Carter is still off after the meet but will be back to training soon.

UPPER ASSISTANCE

CS Rows:
5 sets of 10

Band Face Pulls ss with Band Pullaparts:
4 sets of 12 each

Rotator Work – DB side, front, rearaterals and cleans:
3 sets of 8 each direction

Plate Curls ss with Band Pushdowns:
100 reps Pushdowns, 4 sets of 10 Curls

Tim and I built a stone platform this morning before lifting. We worked on that project and cleaned/rearranged the gym. Once we got done just decided to hit a little back and delt work and call it a day.

EVENT TRAINING

Farmers Walks with Low Pick (12in):
120 per hand x 60 feet
170 per hand x 60 feet
210 per hand x 60 feet
260 per hand x 60 feet

100×50 feet
200×50 feet
290×50 feet
380×50 feet

Tire Flips (with the small Tire):
3 sets of 10, 5, 5

Stone Loading, no Tacky:
220×3
240×3
240×3
240×3

Putting up all the crap we got out:
Max Effort

Great training session. This was the first Event only day Tim and I have done. We have been addding events in after gym lifts, but I think this will be much better. Last time we did heavy farmers I hit 260 and couldn’t budge the 300′s per had off the ground after tugging on them several times. Today I got the pick and just hung on, haha. That was a big PR for me, definitey started the day off good. We are doing the hand over hand pulls with tow straps so it’s a bit tough on the fingers, but those were strong as well, I think 380 is a PR on those for me. Tire flips were light, admittedly, but we only have a 440 and a 800, so we picked the lighter one. Stones went well, they weren’t hard, and they shouldn’t be only weighing 240, but we got solid work there as well. We are getting some lead so we can make a 260 ad 280 in the next couple weeks, then we will have to get the 20in mold to make 300+ stones.

LOWER TRAINING

SSB Box Squats:
Barx10x2sets 155×5 245×5
295×3 335×3 385×3

Deadlifts against Minis (+80lbs):
135×5 225×3 315×3 365×3 405×3 455×3

Cleans:
135×5 185×3
205×3
225×3

Solid training session. Tim worked up to 495×3 on his last set of pulls. I stopped with 455, which was good for me considering I have been dealing with food poisioning or something all week and I had no energy to train. Daniel brought his brother and they hit some squats and then worked speed pulls and Stiff Legged Deads and abs. Everybody had a solid training session. Nothing super crazy.

UPPER

Warmups

Log Clean & Press:

190×3
210×3

Shrugs:

315×20
405×20
405×20

Band Pushdowns:
4 sets of 25

Log Curls:
4 sets of 10

Good training session. First time I have ever used a log, was more difficult than I thought it would be, but it was good. Tim and I both hit 230 for a set of 3, I couldn’t get the clean all the way on the 250 set. It’ll come with more practice. I am still fighting this food poisoning and am fighting dehydration and absolutely no appetite, so hopefully I start to feel better soon. Daniel and Carter both hit accessory work at their commercial gyms today.

Count me in -- great work. I'm not a powerlifter or strongman, but I enjoy reading about the training and lifts.

I'm -from- Alabama, even though I currently live in California -- I grew up partially in Birmingham. I'll be moving to Kentucky to be with my fiancee next month, so I'll be closer -- I'll be visiting family down there, so maybe I can come down and check out your place!

Pretty big PR for me with the 875. Speed was very fast and I feel I cojldve easily gone over 900 today but held back a little bit. My previous best reverse band was around 815. On track for a solid PR at the meet in Feb. Tim hit a big raw PR today an is closing in on a 600 raw squat. Daniel is hitting PRs as he get used to weight he has never held on his back. Things are going good.

hope the back heals quickly will, what do you usually do to relieve some of the pain in your elbows and forearms?

Thanks Jay...I havent found anything other than ART and time off that help out with Elbow and forearm pain...sorry. I usually just grin and bear it...and take a crap load of Ibuprophen and use tubs of icy hot...

Lower back is getting better, will resume training on Thursday.

Just so everybody knows (I doubt anyone cares, but whatever, LOL) I have a jacked up disk at L3-L4 and the disk at
L5-S1 has degenerated to almost nothing, so every 6 months or so (usually during a meet cycle) I do something to jack it up and have to take a few days off and take it easy until it stops hurting. It's pretty debilitating when it is in full force, but usually dies down in about 3 days.

The moral of the story...you can train hard and make progress even when you have issues, you just gotta be smart about it.

Ok night. Might have hit a PR with that 345, but it's been so long with this setup that I don't remember. Everything felt a little stiff tonight so it wasn't a banner night or anything, but I got some solid work in. I was definitely feelig that 900 squat from Tues night...

It's terrible and very slow, but considering the food poisoning/getting sick that I dlet with earlier in the week I guess it is acceptable...

TKE's:
3 sets of 25 each leg

All sets over 600 felt terrible except the last one. I think I am feeling the effects of being so sick earlier in the week. My bodyweight is still down significantly and I think that I was pushing it by taking my opener on a Fri night, but didn't have a choice due to some scheduling issues. The 765 just was all over the place and awful. Just wasn't right from the get go, so decided to regroup and just take 745. Went up like nothing. I figure if I can hit my opener on such a horrible day/week I should be good at the meet.

Good session. Today's plan was just to hit my opener in competition gear. The first set with 585 I got forward on my toes, pulled the rep fine, but not what I wanted. Took it gain and blew it up. We are planning to pick up a Monolift for DSBB this weekend on the way back from the Strongman meet in Norfolk.

I did the Brute Strength Gym Strongest Man competition this past weekend in Norfolk, VA. Since I am getting ready for a Powerlifting Meet in 4 weeks, I decided to just enter the novice division. It was also my first Strongman Meet. I had a great time and I will probably do another one eventually, but Powerlifting is my main thing, and this confirmed it, haha.

Here's a breakdown of the meet based on memory:

Medley: Hand Over Hand Sled Drag (250lbs??), Sandbag Load (200lbs), Power Stairs (250lbs):
I ended up in 3rd place with a time of 31 seconds

Press Medley: Circus Dumbbell (110lbs), Axle (180lbs), Log (200lbs), Keg (180lbs):
I ended up in 3rd here as well with a time of 33 seconds. This was very easy for me, the dumbbell was awkward and it was my first time ever pressing one, but it wasn't too bad.

Medley: Rickshaw Carry (350lbs), Yoke (400lbs), Tire Flip (500x3):
I think I ended up around 30 seconds. I knew I would need to be around 25 seconds to win, ended up in 4th. Pretty easy though

Last Man Standing Axle Deadlift: I pulled 550, which tied for first with about 3 guys. I think I would've pulled more but we didn't start pulling until about 45min after I took my a last warmup, then I had to wait forever between attempts, so I got really stiff. But 550 was a PR with the axle so I was pleased.

Stones: 170, 200, 220, 250, 300: finished in 30 seconds but I lost 5 seconds at the start after a brain fart. This was easy too. Took 2nd place.

Overall I took 3rd place and got beat by 2 guys who lift at the gym and had practiced all these medley's over and over and I had never done one of them, haha. Had a really good time and didn't take it too seriously since my weights were so light so I had fun.

The field in the open categories was very very deep. Andy Deck was competing as a heavyweight and his training partner Steve won the lightweights and pulled 650 with the Axle, it was impressive.

Also, Deep South Barbell now has a MONOLIFT and GHR! We picked up the Mono in North Carolina this weekend and the GHR came in as well. I'll put some pics up on the website tomorrow.

I have been horrible about keeping this thing up lately. I just dont have time on the internet much anymore. I do keep http://dsbb.wordpress.com up to date, mostly because I have an app on my phone. I dont know if anybody is even reading this thing anymore anyway, but if you are, just check the DSBB website.

Later,
