In the words of Peter Griffin... "This really grinds my gears..."

Has anyone seen the new Planet Fitness commercials? Or the billboards?

For those that haven't here's one that's been playing non stop in my area...:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-cpojkILO0

And it's hit the radio:
The new Planet Fitness commercials running on the radio this week. "If you have a tattoo of a bicep on your bicep, then Planet Fitness is not for you. If you drink creatine in a gallon jug, then Planet Fitness is not for you. If you're family does not allow you to hold a baby, in fear of crushing it, then Planet Fitness is not for you......"

Basically the whole concept behind Planet Fitness is "JUDGMENT FREE ZONE"-- so everyone helps out one another and views one another on the same playing field. I can dig that. However, their ads are FAR from judgment free.

For those that know, you know I work at a local gym. It's a small "Mom & Pops" type gym where there's always loud music, you're allowed to deadlift, you can grunt, shout, scream, and yes even drop a weight a two, and you can bring your gallon of water in. Much more, it's such a close knit gym everyone knows everyone and we all encourage one another to hit their fitness goals. Isn't that what gyms should strive to be?

Sad but true, a Planet Fitness just opened up down the road from me... so they are promoting this crap like its gospel. I've already heard from our current members who tried out Planet Fitness. Here's the gist...

They have one of those true "lunk alarms" meaning you can't do anything that makes noise above a whisper in there. The ones that mentioned this to me said it's like a sanctuary. No music. No noise. No nothing.

No barbells. No dumbbells over 60 or maybe 70. No real free weights besides those dumbbells. And don't even think about deadlifts...

You can't bring in a gallon of water. Honestly? Who really cares? Would they allow in two half gallon jugs? Would you be able to bring in 3.79 liters? I think I would go there just to mess around with them and line up 16 8 oz. cups. That's just re-damn-diculous.

I don't know. Maybe it's just me. But I saw these ads, heard a few on the radio, and just heard everyone and their momma talking about this new gym-- and it pissed me off.

I know all gyms can't be "hardcore" or cater to everyone-- but this just seems downright horrible and discriminates against those with physiques most would earnestly strive for.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, then it's probably a duck. I'd like for my gym to be the same--not some form of a silent day care while I engage in social hour.

Anyone else ran into this crap?

Honestly, I can care less at this point. Sure, I was a bit taken back when the commercials/ads first aired. But I'm over it. Let them train at their gym and I'll train at mine. I'm not allowed to train my way at Planet Fitness? OK. I don't want to go to a gym without barbells anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

To their credit, this commercial is getting a ton of burn! Positive, negative or indifferent, it's doing its job! Don't agree with the angle, but it's serving it's purpose and we're all talking about it..

My parents go here, and it works for them. They're open 24 hours, it's very low monthly, and all they do is light machine work and use the treadmills. They don't understand the bagels/pizza thing they do each month or week, but they don't partake in it..

I went there to workout with my ex a couple years ago because it was 10 degrees out and I needed to run - and the place is kind of rough. They don't have free weights above 60lbs. People sit on machines and talk for a long time, they drink coffee, and you're almost chastised for asking how many sets they had left.. I think we all can agree they aren't exactly the best gym around, but at the same time they do appeal to a less serious crowd. None of which I have a problem with, but if you're going to claim "No judgement" then you better be able to back it up. By making commercials that are blatenly judging people is wrong, especially when that's what your building your foundation on.

How I feel - If you're going to be a gym like this, just do it and shut up. No need to market yourself in this way, but if that's the road you want to take.... Then dig your own grave, I guess. I don't know why you'd stir up an entire industry which hated you in the first place, now they have every excuse to bury you.

"So, How about your mission statement is in direct opposition of your new commercials. You state "we will seek to perfect this safe, energetic environment, where everyone feels accepted and respected." However, it is very clear that bodybuilders are not welcome in your facility, which is evident by the very harsh stereotyping that all bodybuilders must be lacking intellect, as implied in your Youtube videos. I will conclude my statement, by making the suggestion of visiting Animalpak.com and viewing several of the articles written by IFBB Pro bodybuilders, and then you will see these men are very very capable of composing well thought out articles on matters of philosophy, nutrition and lifestyle."

Hi guys,

I've read over the rules and as far as I can see this post doesn't break any rules, but if it does feel free to lock it.

Anyway, I've recently come across some bloody shocking adverts from a gym in the US called Planet Fitness. (we don't have them over here)

According to them, their gym is a 'judgement free zone' yet this completely contradicts their ethics displayed in this advert, by stereotyping the bodybuilder to be a loud, stupid idiot.

I would rather 'lift things up and put things down' than be some skinny pencil pushing bloke in a yellow polo working at that shit gym...

Take a look at these videos guys and share your views on the subject.

How can anyone be expected to hit and surpass their max capacities without making a single sound? Seriously, this is going to attract all of the fat people in the gym who will just stay fat, because pushing past any barriers will undoubtedly sound the most embarrassing alarm in existence.

I was particularly holding a WTF face when he was interviewing the representative of PL and he's like 'so your gym's about not discriminating, unless it's them and then you can discriminate."

Reply: 'Yep."

I went into their gym once due to the low monthly offer, but they didn't have a smith machine, and the heaviest bars they had were 60 lbs. The heaviest dumbbells - 80 lbs. I was like 'well - I lift more weight than what you have here, so I guess I'll go back to Gold's.'

Props to Gold's for being a creepy, expensive, car-agreement contract business full of creeps and perverts......that allows us the ability to grunt.

Let's do one thumb up - one thumb down here. Oh and if you have positive comments on Golds, that's because you don't live in Utah. Utah is separately owned from the rest of the country, and we pay twice as much for the membership. Even when I worked for them they required that I carry a membership. Charged the clients $90 / hr, got paid $14 / hr. Essentially I ended up paying to go to work. It sucked.

So - there's that. Anywho. Back to the thread.

And here I thought, way out here in the East, we're the only country that has gyms that discriminate big guys. I was thinking that there were none of those bullshit gyms for senior citizens and boy-band applicants in other countries. I guess I'm not alone in that dilemma. I was leg-pressing 300 lbs. at a gym I used to go to for sessions, making little noises and I get stared at by nimrods who look like customer service reps on hunger strike. i look at the weights they were carrying and they were all 2.5's to 10 lbs...then, everybody pretends that what they're lifting is heavier than the 150 lb barbell row that I was doing. and then, again....i heard murmurs about me saying that, "this guy shouldn't be here...this gym's for guys like us, not guys like him..."

my guess? bothered by the thought that there's such a man that exists..

Ladies and Gents,

I don't normally bitch or try to push my opinions on people, but I witnessed something truly horrifying this weekend. Make sure you're sitting down....

A good buddy of mine invited me to train with her. She's in the midst of prep for a figure comp and wanted a training partner. She's in CT, and I was going to be in CT over that particular weekend. So why not?

She gave me a guest pass to Planet Fitness. After that, everything seemed fine. Sure there was one Olympic bar, the DBs only went up 60lbs, and the place was littered with machines, but I thought, 'Fuck it, I'm here to spend time with a friend and enjoy each others' company, not find a new gym to call home'. I felt that way, however, until I did a moderate set of Deadlifts. I finished in lock out position and then started to bend my knees slowly and place the weight on the ground. I don't wear straps or use chalk or anything other than my mitts, and my grip gave out. The weight bounced on the floor, but nothing out of the ordinary. All of a sudden I heard an alarm go off and this siren started flashing and going ape shit. I had no idea why it happened and went back to add weight. A PF employee came up to me and said, 'Sir, you have to leave'. I started laughing thinking that my friend had put this employee up to it. She didn't. I got fucking bounced from a gym for performing a staple exercise and then dropping the weight by accident.

I apologized to my friend (she didn't give a shit about it) and we got together later. I went home and Googled/researched this as I was stunned. Sure enough, PF has a 'lunk' alarm that goes off for any grunting, weight dropping, and/or passing judgement.

I always admired weightlifting because it allowed you to push your limits and go out of your comfort zone to see what the human body can realistically sustain. There are few things more gratifying than resistance training. That moment where your body is worn out and you are truly depleted, then you do just one last set. That's the good stuff. But at PF they robbed me of this. Though I would never tell anyone how to train or run their own gym, I can't help but feel this is cheating novice lifters and newcomers. One should not be punished for pushing themselves.

In any event, end of rant and Godspeed.

NJC

It is what it is. They're not suitable to the 'hardcore' people like us. But that's fine. I was angered when I first saw the commercials and all the hoop-la about it. But in the end, it's fine. Planet Fitness was opened up to cater to those people who WE don't want in OUR gyms. We don't want some 120lb twig curling in the rack we want to squat a PR in. We don't want some dude doing calisthenics in the area we're trying to do a barbell row dropset. So now they have their place. We have ours. That's fine with me.

Thank God theres nothing to this extreme in the UK... But the 'Fitness Centres' over here are following the same route and I wouldn't be suprised if a Planet Fitness set up over here 5 years down the line
It's also sad how they utilize bodybuilders in their videos... They probs need the money for one reason or another and Planet Fitness take full advantage of them in a vunerable position!
Also a lot of respect for that Iron Sport Gym commercial, cracks me up every time when that guy says to the owner 'I just want to get toned up for summer' and his reaction lol

That's a good point Aggression. Great way to look at it. In fact maybe I'll print flyers for them and hand them out to people in my gym doing those kinds of things haha. I'll save them money and they'll save me a headache. Win win.

Look Pathetic Fitness can do whatever it wants and become another McDonald's gym like 24hr fitness, NYSC, etc. But to throw out paying members for weightlifting? That's a tough call.

Hey now, not all NYSC's are alike! Thats where I train now and yea I've gotten complaints for being too loud or dropping weights, but one of the managers suggested that I start coming later at night when he was on his shift, and ever since then I haven't gotten a single complaint. Plenty of local bodybuilders in the area train here, too.

who gives a fuck about Planet Fitness and why are you letting it get to you? ok, i get it your all "too hardcore" for that gym but really is it worth pissing and moaning over or putting down those who don't fit your 'hardcore' mindset? Maybe it's becuase of this mentality on caring how others perceive how you lift is what is causing places like Planet Fitness to open up. It's for people who just want to work out and not be around jerk-offs who slam weights or people who deem themselves "too hardcore for society". First off, things like that, are earned not self given.....you have to earn the title of being a hardcore lifter, its not handed out like condoms at a strip club, and odds are if you think your too hardcore, well sorry to deflate egos, but your proabably not that hardcore. In all honesty, grow the fuck up, stop caring about the Planet Fitnesses out there, and just train.

I've been a member of NYSC longer than I can remember. Never liked Equinox or H or Crunch or the other Manhattan gyms. I'm sure not all NYSCs are alike. But they are a McDonald's gym. I've tried out about 15 on the island and they are all the same. Not bad, but nothing unique about them. If I lived uptown, I'd probably go to Edge.

Who is it getting to? No one, lol. And I think you're missing the point. It's not about whether we, ourselves, or too "hardcore" for Planet Fitness. Frankly, who cares? Like you, I don't. But I think one point is whether or not Planet Fitness is representative of the culture at large in stigmatizing dedicated lifters (e.g, those who deadlift, use chalk, and occasionally grunt, lol). What is the gym tapping into when it creates a "lunk alert"? What about the irony of saying they are without judgment, yet judge dedicated lifters? To me, all this is a very interesting and effective marketing approach.

So not everyone here is pissing or moaning about the gym not being hardcore enough. I don't need you to tell me to grow up and stop caring about Planet Fitness because what the business represents is a unique way of looking at the bodybuilding culture--and I think we could all learn something by looking at the way that business conducts yourself.

For the record, I find it ironic that your post contains a fair amount of pissing and moaning itself--but about the people who you believe are pissing and moaning themselves. There too, is irony, lol.

Big Wides is a good man. And I agree with his post, 100%. Live and let lift. Planet Fitness now provides a safe haven for those who are a bit too intimidated to train at 'normal' gyms. They don't want us to train there, but we don't want to train there anyway. No fouls. Win-win.

I agree with what Wides and Agg are saying. I just wanted to point out that I thought it was funny/bizarre for getting bounced from a gym for lifting. I'm sure as you can tell from the tone of my post that I was being sarcastic and not genuinely concerned about the state of gyms.

C'mon, Obviously we are going to rip on this place, but as long as no one is loosing sleep over it, I think it's really just all in good fun. Really no need to get worked up over it, no matter which side you're taking.

Like Agg said, we don't want to go there anyways.

It is kind of a funny place though, so I'm not going to be shy about ripping on it. And then their members can call me a meathead, so it evens out.

What bothers us is that we know that somewhere we are hated and discriminated against just because we like to push ourselves or we have too low bodyfat or too much muscle. For no other reason than these other people are different.

When you consider it, it's no different than African-Americans disliking the Ku Klux Klan (Extreme example I know). So yes, we have every right to dislike Planet Fitness and express it without it being considered "whiney," as most of us don't judge those who are fat or do not enjoy training.

Exactly. Sure it pisses me off because that's all there is around here is health clubs. Nowhere for lunks. Their commercial pisses me off because it is stereotyping people. There's an ex bodybuilder with 23" inch arms who doesn't intimidate anybody at our local Ymca. He will talk with regular joes, kids to old people, for half my workout while he is trying to work out himself. He is always friendly. There is no judgement at my gym or most gyms I would guess. I hate hypocrites and of course I'm going to give them shit and laugh at them. No one is crying and dwelling...
