The weekend of April 19th, 2011 witnessed a group of larger-than-life athletes invade Las Vegas for the inaugural Sin City Strongman Challenge. Held downtown over a two day period, this multi event competition brought participants literally from all over the world to battle it out in Las Vegas to win a trip to a major qualifying event.
And it wasn’t easy. Ranging from 280 to 370 pounds, these monsters of men had to prove themselves over and over again. There were four challenges each of the two days; and since the points were cumulative, if a competitor faltered at one particular task, he had to make up for it on the next.
Saturday -
· Farmers’ walk (365 each hand) 25m
· 705 deadlift for reps
· 380 stone over 57” bar for reps
· 330 keg with 1250 Harley drag
Sunday -
· 900 tire flip 25m
· 1000 yoke walk 25m
· An overhead medley, which included lifting the following items consecutively:
- 200 monster dumbbell
- 270 keg
- 225 stone
- 341 log
- 365 axle
· Truck pull 25m
Definitely, this was not a simple mission. And with almost twenty competitors, it was an incredible and tough field of athletes. But only one was able to rise above and grab the big prize. Vidas Blekiatis made it to the top, but it wasn’t easy. Second and third place winners, Mike Jenkins and Dan Harrison were not far behind. However, by claiming first place, Blekiatis qualified for and won a trip to the Giants Live competition, the only qualifier on the planet for the World’s Strongest Man competition; a major win and a huge prize, indeed.
"It was a great show!” said Callie Best, the event coordinator and emcee “The winner gets to go to a Giants Live Worlds Strongest Man Qualifier, and the top five walked away with prize money. Not a bad weekend gig in fabulous downtown Las Vegas."
