Right now I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. Im 21, and currently serving in the Army.My current work schedule (14-16 hours a day, 5-6 days a week) keeps my training time very limited. I dont compete, but I do train primarily like a powerlifter. 18 months ago I was having a ton of back issues that no longer allowed me to run much. Ended up being a herniated l5-s1, and two other severely degenerated discs. Fast forward to now, Ive pulled 600 with Jeremy Frey @ Strong Gym, Ive Close Grip Benched 365, and most recently easily broke depth on a 545 squat with Gary Grissinger. That day I went for 575, and I bombed it. I havent been right since. I tried taking it easy for a few weeks, but now I cant squat for shit.(Boxx squats didnt seem too painful tho) I deadlifted 2 weeks later, and painfully pulled 507. My lower back is terribly fried, and I fear it could be my disc getting worse. Today I went to squat, and couldnt break depth with 135 without leaning forward. I opted for front squats, and hit 185x10 with a great deal of struggle. I spent 15 mins prior to this session foam rolling, dynamic warmups and light stretching. What is going on? Im going to attempt to set up an appt with a doctor, tho its really hard to do so, and many routes of therapy arent offered where Im at. I know there isnt a magical cure, but any insight you can give me on how to work around this? Its awfully frustrating, as training is all Ive got here. Thanks alot

1)Doctor

2)Rest

3)Lifting super heavy weights week by week will tear you up, no matter what you take, or who you are, or how you do it.....it happens.

4)Make sure your form is comftable, dont ask others if your form is right, only you should know how your form should feel.

5) That pretty much sums it up, resting is the major component.

Get well brother, and God Bless.

Bingo.

Please do not fuck around with a possible disc injury. Get that checked out pronto. Better to miss some time to get healed up than to push it and possibly be out forever...sounds extreme, but we are talking about discs here and that is some serious shit.

Sorry to hear about your back injury, I have the same problem! I see a Chiropractor for routine visits...to adjust me.

You have to try to get a MRI or see an Orthopedic Dr. for an evaluation. Next stop all heavy power lifting movements for 2-3 weeks. Apply moist heat prior to training and ice after. Do cardio (treadmill efx) for endorphine release and try training around it. You can still train back with pull downs and modified rowing movements. Concentrate on core training, work your abs in a pain free zone.

Your a young strong kid, don't mess with this type of injury or ignore it. Take the time off, work around it with exercises that don't cause pain, do your cardio and ab work with your warm ups and stretching...Also try hanging from a chin up bar, it will help traction your back out for some pain relief. It will get better with time, just take the time for your body to heal!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Im not necessarily hurting every moment, of everyday. Just certain things make it worse and right now, my ROM is awfully limited. Im going to be smart, and not squat or pull for a bit. I know I can still get some good training without it. I also ordered an inversion table, it will be here in a few weeks. I know that will help alot. In the meantime, Im going to kick up the ab training. Going to work on weak points like my hamstrings, and do more in terms of recovery. More foam rolling, heat/ice, stretching. I also ordered a yoga dvd, targeting back, sacrum and hips. Again, thanks for the responses gentlemen.

As far as professional care. Chiropractic care isnt offered where I am. Ive done it before, and the Army wont send you unless you beg..For the most part. They throw some pain killers at ya and say have a nice day. When Im back stateside I plan to see one on my own, off post. (Chiro)

I was thinking about going an adjustment, just worried about the cost. Any ideas?

Invest in an inversion table? I think a chiropractor is great, just in small doses.

Take things slowly, get the relevant checks and don't take short cuts! Had a disc that was twisted and pressing on a nerve in my neck a few years back. Took the road to recovery slowly (chiropractor, physio, constantly stretching etc etc), making sure not to "rush" back to hitting the weights (and motocross) and with that, am now lifting and pushing myself harder than ever!

While you may think "it'll never get better", it will..just takes time.

All the best.

Something that serious id leave in the hands of a doctor.. I hate doctors, because you always know they are gunna say dont lift.. but i fractured L4-L5 years ago and it was very stressful, i couldnt do shit, but when i worked with the doctors they put me through therapy, and within a couple months i was back to deadlifting, and now 3yrs later i rarely feel it... The your gunna have to give it time away from the heavy weights because although it sucks not being able to do them now, imagine hurting it again, worse and never being able to lift those weights again...

So doctor, rest, ease back into the weights..

best of luck brother,

You need to get your doctor to refer you to a rehab specialist. Doctors don't know shit about lifting or diet. A doctor will just tell you stop lifting. You shouldn't have to stop lifting, a rehab specialist will help you do strength training to fix the problem. Injuries need to be rehabbed by strengthening the muscles with resistance, a rehab center is better than just a regular doctor.
