Hey Chris,

How you like the Arliegh Burke class? I commisioned the Arliegh Burke way back in the day. Met the man himself, and his wife. Did honors at his funeral.

Thanks to all who serve or have served for continuing the legacy of freedom fighters that so many before and after you will have embarked on.

I got nothin' but the highest level of respect and admiration for you guys over there in the shit. My best friend was shot and killed during riverine patrol on New Year's Day 2004 at 19 years old. You guys are the reason why I do what I do every day, and the reason why I CAN do what I do. When my alarm goes off at 4:30 AM to lift before work, and I want to hit snooze...visions of guys carrying hundred pound packs through some hellhole, never knowing what could happen around the next corner flash through my head. That shit is enough to throw me out of bed and fuel my fire throughout my workout and my day. Keep it real over there, and be fuckin' RELENTLESS.

Hey,

I am prior Navy; went in as as CTR, came out a combat photgrapher. I only did 4 yrs..that was enough for me..single mom and all. I was stationed on the USS Kittyhawk for a while, then did shore duty in San Diego, CA.

I am currently an active duty dependent. The other half is a Navy Warrant, soon to retire. We are stationed in the UK right now.

20 years Army as of this year. (Join in 87)

Spent some years in the Infantry, got out after the airbourne "departed" now I'm with the military police. I've seen enough combat in my days to know that I never want my family to ever experience it. Hell, no person should experience it.

I was told I could go officer due to my education but rather stay NCM (Enlisted). I get more respect with being with and a part of the troops. As long as my knees hold out I'll still be a member. (Institutionalized, I guess)

If I went "Pointy Head" (officer), I would have to be a part of all that political crap, listen to a bunch of 17-19 year old wanna-be leaders sucking up to the older staff and making poor judgement call. Instead, now, I get to arrest them when they (excuse the language) "step on their dick".

14 years. E-5 88M20 Truck Master. 342 days in Kuwait OIF. Got out after to many O6-O7 battles about who was in charge. To much bitchin about the other one. It definetly is not the Army I joined in 1990. E4 telling me they arent going to work with so and so and I cant make them blah blah blah bullshit. Gave it up to keep my sanity and respect for the Army.

Speak for the Army only. I know I have never seen a USMC DI get off work and go home and sit on the couch. The DI's are some of the best Marine's I have ever seen and bust their ass all day long.

No one can speak for an entire branch bro. I bet some USMC DI's were the same. It's not the branch that matters...it's the person who is wearing that brown round. Any Marine DI could go home plop down and drink beer. Just like Any Army DSGT could go home take his Animal supps and shred some fuckin weights.

yeah, keep your guard up and don't take anything for granted. It is very important for you new guys to know that Iraq ain't no fucking joke, don't do this thinking you are going to be HOLLYWOOD coming back home with girls kissing your feet. This ain't a safari or big game hunting. When you go there you are going to be in very hostile territory and you are marked for death in the form of IED's or whatever other things that can be conjured up in their minds. Forget all this stupid heroic macho man junk and focus on keeping a straight head, and lift hard when you get a chance, and be very flexible, stiff muscles and joints are a soldier's liability not asset, so stretch often and always stay hydrated. Try your best to get your meals in, usually they have extra MRE's out there that no one else consumed. Put your protein powder shake in one of your canteens, since you get two, especially important if you go on missions, patrols, or other things. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR GUARD UP, if you are hungry while on patrol or missed a meal here and there, SCREW IT! ITS NOT THAT IMPORTANT! MORE IMPORTANT TO STAY ALERT AND STAY ALIVE!

Hey Brother,

I hear ya. You have to find/make the time. Find the gym on whatever FOB you're headed to and make sure that you get there and get to know the guys there. They'll hook ya up when you need it. Depending on where you go will determine the size of the gym you have to use. Most FOBs have gyms here though. So, good luck and GOD BLESS Brother!!!!!!

What are you guys doing for mass gains in a deployed location? The chow halls only open certain hours and MREs are shit for you i know that. Got any good ideas?

Brutus_515
08-28-07, 1:58 pm
Well when I was on any deployment I didnt ever try to build mass or diet just get the food in I needed to keep awake I was more worried about the other shit on hand than my calorie intake but I always had animal pak sent from the wife with some MRP'S in the vehicle...Chow halls are pretty good over there from what i remember I was in the infantry we didnt get to go on camp too often but it was nice to get a NON-MRE meal in every once and a while......and they gyms they got there arnt too shabby either but again if you have the means to be on camp take advantage of it stock up at the PX order some MRP's Most places shipp to APO's...Hit the 3/4 hots at the chow hall Camp Fallujah had a 1130-1230 meal time from what I remember...and all the free water that gives you the shits for the first month.....and hit the gym...they are there for you

mikejones1
08-28-07, 3:11 pm
i was in the infantry too, just eas'd this month. 3 combat deployments, kharma iraq, ramadi iraq and haiti. depending how busy you are, basically depending on your job you're most likely not going to be able to gain mass, or bulk up. i tried to, but when you go outside the wire everyday and dont return to your firm base for a couple of days, standing op's or doing other missions it just wouldnt happen. being away from the gym and not being able to eat while standing a 4 hour post. even just patrolling for 2 to 3 hours it would just wear you down and burn way too many calories.

in this case you can only hope to maintain what you have and of course cut up. but if you have a mos, or job as a radio operator or something like that and you stay on base for your whole deployment go for it.

youre gona have to eat the mre's when its all thats around. the chicken breats and hamburger patty's really arent bad for you, plus they got lots of protein. beef stew too. stock up at the px when you can. order canned food and supps from the internet center, like tuna, chicken and weight gainer. also get those packages of food from family and friends. i did all of this but i believe my job and mission held me back from gaining mass.

Brutus_515
08-28-07, 3:22 pm
You on point...If you got the means use them.... my buddy was in dispercing and put on some big weight and strength during his deployment he was either eating at his desk while working or lifting or sleeping during his down time....They are not to happy with supps over there after some brain child jacked his kidneys up taking to much Creatine Mono and cell tech together and not staying hydrated but if you do things right your chain of command should be cool with you doing it

MarneSoldier45k
08-28-07, 4:10 pm
When i was in Iraq i was on Convoy ops basically we convey through baghdad and were back on base at like 17:00 i ate like a fuckin horse. Sometimes when we went to the larger FOB like BIAP,Ananconda or Taji you could find cell-tech and nitro-tech thats it. but it worked for me at least. Im deploying again in october not really sure where im goin but i am a Mechainic so i will for sure get some down time.Whenever i was over their i would canibalize the MRE's and constanly eat. i ate every two fuckin hours. Put on about 25 lbs.In some cases like mine you can definitly gain over their you have to be really commited though. But in Brandon and MOH case they couldn't really do shit because they were out on missions for days. That IBA fuckin drains you, and the last thing your thinkin about is liftin

if u can manage to have a protein shake mid morning, post workout and before bed go for it. u could mix dry oats in w/ it
before bed try to have some peanut butter or nuts w/ shake

try to get a solid breakfast-eggs, complex carbs(like oats or potatoes or whole wheat toast) and maybe some fruit

in that buffet situation try to have some pasta(good carb) and then some of that turkey with a side salad maybe
at the grocery store stock up on nuts, beef jerkey, quaker oats and waters
thats my best suggestion

Cstlfx
11-26-07, 3:37 pm
I agree with pizzalamp. Throw some turkey on that pasta, then, if you can, keep non-parishable foods in your dorm so you can eat them before bed/when you wake up.

Its all about chow on the go. Jerky, almonds, pouch tuna, bars. Whatever you can fit into your pocket. Put a small cooler (the lunch bag type that are tall not wide) of precooked chicken, and raw veggies in your Assault Pak.

Be creative, its hard but it can be done.

bro all im gona tell you is, at least when i was in the marines, cutting is not really an option, ecspecially when on deployment. its hard enough getting meals in, rather than looking for healthy food thats will help you look cut up.
and when on deployment, if your infantry, forget about it....you need all the food you can grab for fuel....and i guarantee you will still be cut just cause ur burning so much calories.
just try and eat everything in sight and get huge while you can

if im not mistaken didnt the grilled chicken mre have penut butter, crackers, mashed potatoes and grilled chicken. yea and its a mre and its shit, but you know...eat it.

Macs63
06-21-08, 9:46 pm
Depending on your situation, bringing pre-cooked food is one of your best bets. If you can pick-up hard boiled eggs from the galley... a big plus! Those starkist tuna packs are awesome. Especialy if you get them in bulk from somewhere like Costco, or one of those other wherehouse type of grocery stores. I'm stuck on base al day long until 6:00, so after my 0500 workout everyday, al the rest of my meals I every 2-3 hours, usually are premade at home for the day. Also you can always substitute shakes or meal replacement bars, but it's still best to get most of your vitamins/protein from whole foods. Hope this helps somewhat...

Any current/former service men and women. If so, state your branch and job. Im beginning the journey of AFROTC at the University of New Orleans and will be busting ass for a pilot slot. How do ya'll feel about being in the service and still being freaks in the gym? Sometimes I feel its job specific as far as the amount of time that one can devote to their hobby, as if you must choose on or the other... and other times i feel like if it is important enough to you, you make time. Thought, Comments, Questions. GEAUX

I will agree with the fact that it is job specific as far as the time allotted to dedicate to this lifestyle that we choose. With that being said, just like in any other job, one have to make time. I'm not saying that it is always to the same extreme but I've had to chow down some meals in a bathroom stall at times, have to drink oatmeal (meaning in a cup with water) etc...

from a career stand point of view it has been very rewarding for me. I do not know how the AF works to be honest so I would be out of line to comment.

All in all, I do not regret it.

Peace.

Man your right next to me. About an hour 15 min.

Retired Builder Chief! You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. I was still getting my job done and then some, and still able to find time to get the meals in. The training can come anytime. Morning before work, lunch time, or after work. I wouldnt say its job specific. There are guys in every rating, every job that put the time in and get great results. There are alot of accomplished powerlifters and bodybuilders in the military. Its really all about "how bad you want it".

I did the ROTC deal at the University of Pittsburgh, branched National Guard, Corps of Engineers. I've been in for almost 6 years now, I commissioned in April 2011. I was always seen as the kid "who was always eating" throughout my military career and don't see that ever changing. I made it work through all of the FTX's and long training events as well as I could. I definitely had to make time to get into the gym because I never really saw Army PT anywhere near enough to be in the shape I wanted. The military and college and hitting the gym (animal style) will definitely keep you busy, especially for the pilot route... but stick with it, its worth every second. When you commission, your soldiers and fellow soldiers will see your hobby's results and really put you in front of the others.

My fiance's (also in the Army) sister is a Blackhawk pilot in the Army, about to finish up flight school. Shes been out for over a year at Ft. Rucker and said it has been the hardest thing shes done - by far. I'm not sure how it works in the AF, but flight school is a whole other animal compared to the rest of the military, so just keep that in mind later down the road. Both her and my fiance are fellow gym enthusiasts and they make time. She makes time, she wants it, its possible. Her pilot sister kills it every week despite her 12-16 hour long flight decks... proof that it really is "how bad you want it."

Let me know if you need any more info about the ROTC / commissioning side of things as you make the journey, I'm glad to help. Hit it hard brotha.

Just noticed this thread so figured I would put my info up. I had 2 tours to Iraq and I am currently in Afghanistan, getting good gains but they usually halt when I get back to home station due to the military's retarded focus on cardio. Looking to tackle that beast once I'm back and see if I can't continue to gain with all the knowledge I have found on these forums.

Bloch Arena gym on Pearl Harbor is great bro.

Or, try to stop at Mana Barbell near Sand Island.
They just won the "Team Award" at this past weekend's USPA Nationals in Las Vegas.

Ask for Jon Bareng, he is the owner and a Powerlifter.

Looks like I'll be joining this thread. Not officially enlisted yet, but will be as of next week. Going into the army as 11B with a Ranger option. Looking to do a short enlistment, then re-sign if I end up liking it, which it seems most people do. So, who knows?! I'm excited, but really nervous and have butterflies about it. I know infantry sucks, and there's really high highs, but even lower lows, so I'm just working on physical and mental preparation for that. I guess ditching cardio for the last few years was really a bad idea...

Only place in Oklahoma I've ever been is Fort Sill, and I haven't been back in 10 years lol. I'll end up there the next year or 2 for a school that's only offered there, but that'll hopefully be the last time I go back haha. OK City is nice though, but that's about it

Born and raised in Kansas. Mom moved to Oklahoma when her and my Dad divorced, so I split time after that. I miss the food, but that's about it. *LOL*

It's dependent on the compounds in it. Typically anything methylated will pop hot as amphetamines, but you have plausible deniability if you have proof that it was the supplement you were using and not actual meth. I use them and have had no issues. Never even been questioned about it, so you should be okay. But keep in mind that this is only anecdotal and my own personal experience, and I'm not guaranteeing anything. Use at your own risk.
