Im visiting NY in April, staying near NYU. Hoping to get a few workouts in during my trip, can anyone suggest some good gyms in the area? It would be a nice break from my 24hr to hit up some tough old skool gyms with nuthin but iron and character.

Gladiator Gym was as old school as hardcore as they got but they went out of biz a few years ago... Was there once years ago.

I'll try to help out here...

- NYSC; the McDonald's of gyms
- Equinox; a club for cardio bunnies
- H; If you love techno, and hate squats
- NY health and racquet; Not bad. Good weights, clean gym
- Edge: Very solid gym, but way uptown http://edgegyms.com/
- Sports club/LA; If you have money to burn. http://www.thesportsclubla.com/site/

Steel Gym is a good choice in Manhattan, we have had a few ABC's there

PureFitness on 14th and 2nd...used to work out there, they have an olympic platoform and pretty good weights. Havent been there in over a year though so don't hold me to all of that.

Try Complete Body and Spa on 19th street between 5th and 6th avenue (prolly closest to you) It used to be Better Bodies back in the day. Have a lot of space and great equipment. I work out there from time to time, quite a few bodybuilders train there.

Steel Gym is also good, it is really cramped and small, but has good equipment and several squat racks.

NYSC (New York SPorts Club) is alright if in a bind, they're just terribly cramped and over crowded. Depending on when you lift (if in afternoon) there is a NYSC on 91st and 3rd that had dbells up to 150.

Edge is legit, doesnt allow chalk though. Has an oly platform though, very clean place. Seems fairly hardcore.

Best bet is Steel or Complete on 19th st for you because of being down by NYU.

Hope this helps!

The best gym is the one that provides you personal classes and give personal attention to every member. Also check for the equipments they have.

Have fun... Love NYC and I love SF too. Great towns, both of 'em.

would love to hit the nyc gyms. Traveling to NYC is on the bucket list, and it'd be dope to see the universal headquarters in NJ
