I hope this is in the right area, if not, my apologies. In the world of bodybuilding, you can bust your ass in the gym, eat every right food, and take all the necessary supplements, but in the end, if you werent born with the right genetics, you'll probably never reach the top. Genetics control your body, from peaked bicepts to easy growing massive legs. My question is, do genetics play a part in powerlifting too. Am i genetically pre-determined to only beable to deadlift 600lbs the same way Ronnie Coleman is genetically pre-determined to have those sick bicepts? Does having peaked bicepts make you stronger in deadlifting comps compared to long and flat bicepts. I know thats two referenced to arms, it just seems that they are talked about alot when it comes to gentics. This subject doesnt weigh heavily on my mind, Im just more or less curious about it.

I have seen guys who aren't "genetically predetermined" to be good powerlifters become great powerlifters. Forget all that genetic crap you read in flex or whereever, powerlifting is different. You don't have to win every competition to be great, just always improve upon what you have already done, even if that means a 1 pound increase. I am by no means built to bench press, I have long arms, yet i have imporved my bench by over 200 pounds in less than two years. So don't worry about genetics, its more about paying the price and making the sacrifices you need to make to become the best you can.

That's right.. Determination will help. However, if you're not built to bench press you'll never have that 1000lb bench press. Genetics may not play a role for your average Joe but every higher level athlete (in any sport) has the genetics that allowed him/her to get to that point... Yes, along with lots of determination and dedication.

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the feedback. I still dont know if Im built for it or not. Probably because Ive never trained with a true powerlifter, just alot of people with really shitty form, lol. But that still hasnt halted my determination. Im finally at the point where I need atleast 4 plates a side for both deadlift and squat to get a good 5 reps. Bench will be there someday, but im not gonna push it. Ive heard too many horror stories about guys fucking themselves up. Thanks again, and good luck on your own personal journies.
