View Full Version : How many cans of tuna do you eat each week?

J-Dawg

Each week I buy 14 cans of tuna from the supermarket and without fail I slam back 2 cans a day.
So who here relies on tuna as a main source of protein in their diets and if ya do, how much do ya eat each week/day?

I eat a can of tuna before bed on most nights, usually 4 or 5 cans a week. Normally i eat right out of the can and wash it down with water.

My local supermarket has a 5 cans for $4 deal, so I buy 5 at a time and that's how much I eat each week on average.

Mercury poisoning was overhyped by doctors and misunderstood by the public.

I won't go into that though.

I buy the 7 oz packets, better taste if a little more expensive..but I just pull the whole box off the shelf, which is around 12-14 if I'm not mistaken. I'll finish a box a week.

2 per day 14 per week. I try to avoid the oil canned Tuna. I prefer the water canned, called here in my country “Diet” with a sissy pink can.

I do at least 2 cans a day...sometimes late at night, when I am starving and don't want to eat carbs, I will have a couple more of those vacuum sealed bags. I always carry some in my gym bag too.
The ones that are flavored with lemon are not bad either.

Tuna is a great source of protein and is very cost effective. Off-season maybe one can a day, using more protein foods with higher fat (salmon and red meat) But pre-contest, my last meal, meal#7 is 2 cans of tuna with 1/2 bag of pre-washed spinach, 1/2 bag of lettuce, salt/pepper/garlic powder and balsamic vinegar.

1-2 cans a day. It was so easy to throw either a can or one of the soft pouch style in my cargo pocket and have a quick meal out on the flightline when I got a break. I'd show a picture of my shelves in the kitchen, a whole section stocked with tuna!

1-2/day though no reason I shouldn't up to 2/day. 1/2 C brown rice; a table spoon or so of boxed stuffing mix for some taste, nuke, dump in the tuna - water 'n all, that cools it down enough, chow down.

I probably eat 3 or 4 a week now. For awhile I was eating it twice a day. One time Kroger had a sale 4/$1 and I bought 170 cans of it. I have a picture holding the receipt after buying it and the receipt was about 4 feet long, all tuna....

i eat 1-2 cans a day. used to eat it w/ light mayo, but light still isn't low/nonfat. so now i just eat it plain w/ water. i try to get some carbs in there too, so ill add some plain mashed potatoes or rice. sometimes even oatmeal.

about oatmeal too....

i cant eat the instant packet oatmeal, makes me wanna puke, so i cook my shit. does anyone add stuff to their oatmeal or eat it straight from the pot?

ive been known to add butter and sugar back in the day, but now im an all plain guy.

why eat canned tuna when you can eat the real deal?

personally i don't like eating canned things, but if forced...that is a different story.

i like to eat tuna straight up, no cooking, no sauce, i just eat it raw with rice.

i don't know what they soak tuna in the can in but man...its dry as heck.

Dude I totally hate tuna. Every blue moon I'll pretend I'm on fear factor eating a rotten fish found on the side of a lake and hammer one down.

However I might have to try out Muscle's idea because I like chili so perhaps it can hide the taste of the tuna enough for me to handle it.

well, ain't i the lucky one. there is a traditional japanese resturaunt right next to where i work. i rarely eat canned tuna anymore opting instead for freash, raw solid-white albacore tuna, sushimi style. the only thing bad about it is that it gets a little expensive, but well worth it.

2 days in a row I've mixed 1 can of the most generic tuna with a can of Turkey chili (97% fat free)

Upon heating you can't even taste the tuna in it.

This might be a staple in my diet now. For $1.50 I can get:

610 calories

64.5 g protein
68 g carbs
8.25 g fat

I'm splitting this into 2 meals and adding 1 Tablespoon of Natural PB into my meal for a

12.25 g fat

36.25 g protein
410 calories

It's part of my 45% protein: 25% carb: 30% fat daily micro's.

I usually consume 1 12 oz. can of tuna a day, except on the weekends (those are my tuna off days!). I agree that the seasoned tuna in the air tight pouches are great, but definitely more costly. Since it is hard for me to tolerate the taste of tuna straight out of the can day after day, I usually dump my can of tuna into a container and season it with Mrs. Dash lemon pepper seasoning. Mrs. Dash is sodium free/no msg's. If possible, season it the night before you eat it because the seasoning will be absorbed into the fish. Holla back and let me know what you think.

How many cans of tuna can you/do you eat per week? Being a poor college student, tuna out of the can is one of the best/my favorite ways to get in my daily needs of protein. I heard that you should limit the amount you eat per week(merc. poisoning? other problems), but if it means putting on quality muscle I'd eat it every day, maybe even multiple times. So what do you all think?

the calculator on that website says that I am currently 2.5 times over the recommended 'safety' level. Thanks for the response. Any other input? By the way, are there any other sources of protein that are just as easy to consume(out of the can/without being cooked) like tuna?

I think that yellowfin tuna is lower in mercury than albacore. I don't know by how much but if you're eating that much of it, you may want to consider switching.

you can also find canned salmon, whichis much lower in mercury and higher in omega 3. Not too bad either.

I usually eat 2 or 3 a week. I find that ramen noodles and lunch eat are better than always eating tuna.

Go for chunk light tuna. Lowest levels of mercury and tastes better in my opinion.

it goes down quicker than the expensive stuff too- albacore. chunk light is more watery and not as thick.
if you want something quick, make some shakes ahead of time, get some canned chicken, or make some sandwiches.

i have been eating tuna ever since i could eat solid foods because of my dad bodybuilding he just fed me off of what he was eating sometimes. right now i eat maybe 1-2 cans a day but i alter it from salmon to tuna to chili to chicken all the time.

Aww shame on the bike license. I actually just got my class m permit yesterday.

I'd say show them research on disproving their worries. If you present it well enough, and respectfully, I'm sure your intake can be upped. That will not only disprove them, but also show how dedicated you are and how much that irked you. It's one thing to write about it on a forum, but it's another to take action and demand your tuna back!

I too am well aware of the mercury tuna danger/whatever. Ive heard it causes irreversable brain damage and Ive also heard its a bunch of bullshit. Youre going to get mixed responses here, I can tell you that right now. From personal experience, I just got done with my first show and my coach had me on tuna 6 times a day for 2 weeks. 8 cans a day for 14 days!!!! Now, obviously I wouldnt do that normally, but I felt fine and nothing out of the ordinary occured. Nothing that would cause me to worry, but who knows, maybe I did cause some damage. If youre not dieting down, I would say avoid the tuna anyways, its too lean. I know its cheap, but if you got hte money get some ground beef instead.

My 2 cents

im not a pro either, but ive been a heavy tuna eater ever since i started lifting way back when i was 14, on average i would bet its safe to say that i eat 10 cans per week and have been for a long time. and nothing bad has happend that ive noticed, IMO as long as you dont eat extreme amounts of the stuff for a long period of time you will be fine

I eat no canned tuna. Unless you are ultra broke, or on some no carb, no fat diet, there are SOOOOOOOO many other better tasting sources of protein.
