View Full Version : FORVM Issues: Got A Complaint?
We're always open to discussion about how to improve the FORVM and about what works and what doesn't work here. In this thread, be honest with us. Are there any issues you've encountered while on the FORVM? Raise 'em here and we'll look into each one. Don't feel comfortable raising an issue here? Shoot me, naturalguy, Aggression or Universal Rep a PM and we'll discuss behind closed doors. Our goal is to ensure we give the best experience to all on here (while abiding by realistic rules and modding).
Let's keep this thread focused on the actual issues at hand. Off topic posts/rants will be deleted so that we can track issues better.

Hmmm... As horrible as I keep hearing things are... I'd have expected this to at least be on it's 2nd page by now... Just sayin'...
I feel that it's great of Corporate to give the Members the right/ability to air their grievances... Here's people's shot...

Members won't air their grievances here. It's part of the dynamics of this society. Look at my other thread. When I tried to air my grievances, I was shouted down by many members. What member would want to do that? In that other thread, a member said he felt he was unjustly singled out. What did he do? Nothing. Why? Because he didn't want to get banned for complaining. Case in point.

This thread was created strictly for members to air greviances, if they have any. If one doesn't have any greviances, they need not post in this thread. If you want to debate, keep it to your other thread, which I'm allowing to remain 'open' for now. But let's not spread out this debate across the entire forum. Consolodate it. And by you posting this in this thread, you're actaully the one who will make others feel uncertain about posting their issues. DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS.
This thread is open to those with greviances. Let's keep it streamlined. If a member has any issues here, either post it up in here or PM one of us and we'll be glad to work it out in a fair fashion.
Thanks.
This isn't so much an issue/complaint more than a suggestion for this thread.
If things veer off course (like the above 4 posts) then can they just be deleted?
Perhaps Edit the original message to say anything off topic will be deleted in this Thread and then delete those posts (and this one) and we can all air anything without it all coming back to certain other topics and whatnot.
Lets keep this thread on point to maximize it's usefulness.

Only issue I see is that there's a lot of trolling (people saying things simply to inflame others) that sometimes isn't put down.
There's a lot of hotheads on the forum (naturally) and it seems like there's always someone throwing things out there that they know is going to just incite trouble.

Hey J Dawg,
Ok so I'll post up something that may be useful to others that I don't like. Well not that I don't like it but it has been different since the forum switched over to the new forum. Both have to do with tracking my posts.
When I post in a thread, it seems to disapear into nowhere versus the old way where I would post and it goes to the top of the forum page. Also when I search my name in the something more specific, it lists out messages as well as my posts but not in the most recent order. It seems to list them very oddly.
Possibly I just need to make a settings change to fix all this, I'm not sure.
Besides that, I'm happy with everything. It's probably not hardcore to ell everyone I'm happy but I don't care. ha ha

Unfortunately, its tough to justify it. There is a lot of trolling. Carrnage was a big issue to most people. But we took care of it in a respectful manner. He PM'd me and we talked it out. For the last few weeks, he's been great. And that's a beautiful thing. Other members were about to leave this board just b/c of him. As a MOD, I have no problem banning one person in order to save a bunch (if that's what it comes down to). But instead of pulling the quick trigger, we talked it out and everyone's happy.

SO just to explain a little more what I mean, I posted the first post and then couldn't find the thread on the "New SHit" page and had to track it back down through the Living area until I found it. Does that make sense?

shortstack,
Thanks for bringing this up. We had searched to try and fix this issue (tracking posts) but for some reason when we upgraded to a new version of vBulletin, this option didn't appear any in the backoffice to fix.
If anyone is familiar with vBulletin and knows of some way to fix this issue, please PM. In the meantime, I'll have our IT guy look to see if he can find something that we may have missed previously. I'll keep you posted.
And it's ok to be happy, haha!

I know exactly what you mean. We'll check to see if there's a way to fix this in the new vBulletin version.

Agreed. It's a fine line and overall, we want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt when posting (corporate's stance) unless it's something that blatantly breaks the rules. Constructive arguments are good for learning.
If we don't agree with someone, we can either have a constructive argument of just ignore 'em. Most of the times, if you ignore the person, they will quiet down. If you entertain them, they will continue.
Our goal is to try to make the FORVM a good experience for everyone here. And also we can't jump to ban someone just for being annoying or getting on our nerves. It must be justified and deservedly so. Most of the times, a warning should suffice and we can carry on. Other times, a ban may be necessary if the violation is serious and if the person is unable to follow the rules.
SO just to explain a little more what I mean, I posted the first post and then couldn't find the thread on the "New SHit" page and had to track it back down through the Living area until I found it. Does that make sense?
I did some detective work and I think I found a way to fix it. Let me know if it's cleared up now.
Also, a reminder (for everyone)--In this particular thread off topic posts or rants will be deleted. Please post issues here only.

Can you tell me why you or Aggression are deleting my posts in this thread?
I am assuming this is based on cost, bandwidth but was wondering if there was ever a plan to upgrade the amount of PM's we are allowed.
Can you tell me why you or Aggression are deleting my posts in this thread?
Sure--This thread up for specific comments or questions (not just rants) so that we can better track concrete instances of problems. In the original posted, I mentioned that I would delete posts that are not comment/questions related to FORVM issues.

The main issue with PM space is bandwidth currently. We've recently had to prune a bunch of old data to help the FORVM function faster overall (and also to not drain the server it's being hosted on which had been an issue at times).

That is what I figured, other than that I really like the approach here. So many forums get filled up w/ huge avatars and picture files in the sig etc. Working w/ an IT firm and a datacenter I understand the cost of badnwidth. Keep doing what you are doing, you guys rock.

Not sure if this is the right spot, but recently (just starting this morning) I've been having issues when I push 'settings'. I'm used to seeing threads I'm subscribed to with new content since the last time I checked the thread showing up. Now, every thread with any content after about 7:00 AM CSD is showing up, regardless of how many times I check the thread.... just an FYI and maybe someone else is experiencing the same thing.

I think we fixed shortstack's issue but caused another, haha.
As of about 12 or 1pm today, the current thread viewing settings were updated so that all new threads for the day showing under "new shit" continue to show even after you click on them. In your "My Settings" panel, it will also keep a running list of all threads you've posted in or have subscribed to without it disappearing when you click in that thread. It was set this way for about 4 years until we upgraded vBulletin and lost that option (and almost lost the FORVM for a few days, lol).
For the past year or so, it didn't keep all new threads in the queue after you had clicked on them which people had complained about previously but we were unable to fix it until just now.
What option does everyone prefer?

I personally like "What's New" to show what's new for me even if it is from a days ago. I see that "New Shit" is a different Search ID so maybe have both options?

I don't fully remember 'how it used to be', but my preference is to click on settings, and see the threads I've subscribed/replied to with new stuff that I haven't seen yet. Once I click on that thread/page of the thread, then I click on settings again, I want the thread to not show up, only if I click on see all subscribed.
If that doesn't answer your question J I'm sorry, my brain is a bit fried from work.

Not exactly a complaint, but a couple suggestions.
I think a round table type thread on a monthly topic would be cool. I would find it more valuable if the Universal/Animal sponsored athletes and others who Corporate deems trustworthy to be the ones giving their thoughts. Topic could be voted on or what they want to talk about.
Another idea, which concept is kinda stolen from another forum would be something like Animal of the Month. Watchmen or whoever would pick an exercise for the month and interested members would post a link to youtube (in case it would be too much bandwith to embed) and they could be voted on. Winner would recieve some sort of prize, whether a supplement, gear or just a special avatar for recognition.

Great ideas. I know we briefly had some roundtable discussions going in the past. It's one of those things that have to be kept up with.
Animal of the month--Another good idea. You're saying that if we picked something like squats, the person giving the best instructional video on squats would win (via votes)?

the only issue with a live chat feature is how is it moderated? and if someone were to violate the rules within the chat feature, how would it be proven/handled?
creates too much of a headache imho

I know that as a mod they have logs, i guess after today I see your point. It would be a pain in the ass to search through logs if someone complained about a violation.

Actually, a friend of mine has a shoutbox (chat software) that auto logs everything and has /commands that let you do everything pretty easily, and the logs are only kbs. I think we had a million "shouts" and the logs took up maybe a mb. It sorted it all into daily shouts, with timestamps and everything, so it was easy to find anything.

But... Is that feasible and usable in a multi-moderated environment...??? Multiple people have to have immediate access to those logs... Not a matter of screen shots, etc... Those can be altered...

I would think so, you could have it so that mods log in to a page and it'd immediately pop up. They were stored in text files on site, so there was no chance of someone going in and editing things.

After re-reading the new rules sticky, I noticed I couldn't find a "flag" button under posts/usernames. I didn find a report button, underneath the post on the left side, in the grey bar. It's barely visible though because it's grey as well and only becomes more visible when you move your mouse over it. Any chance you could make the report button white or red to make it more noticable?

Not really a complaint per se, more of a browser compatibility issue. On IE of ther versions I'm using (the latest, and one version that is two revision levels old) the text box is very wide. That said I haven't updated my newest browser in a few weeks, so I'll try that, but I've heard other IE users say similar things.
My display time and post time are an hour off. I checked to see what time zone I was set for and it is on the correct selection. Central Time (GMT - 6) but the times that are displayed are in line with Mountain Time.
I think over server must have experience an issue when the power went out and threw off the time of the FORVM. I switched it back to include the proper DST settings. I don't think it'll up date old posts but new ones should be under the correct time now.

Thanks for the quick response. Like I said not really a complaint as I'll do whatever it takes to post on the FORVM, but it might bother some folks.

This is a royal pain... Especially for those of us that have to quote and edit large posts... I keep having to click down to get back to where I was typing... When updating certain lists, it is time consuming...
MD--I increased it to 5min. Does that help? In theory, it's helpful to have in case you type a long post and your browser crashes.
It's back to 20 seconds again...

Took care of that for you, C.
There should be a button at the bottom of the post about flagging it. If it's not showing up on your's, we need to let corp. know.
lol...I found the button. It's the same color as the bar at the bottom and blends in perfectly until I scrolled my mouse and highlighted it.
I don't know about anyone else but I use a Mac and their browser safari to view the forvm. For quite some time now I have had problems, well the same problem repeatedly. I check my subscriptions and I see a full page of highlighted titles and I click on one, comment, and return to subscriptions and all the other threads are no longer highlighted. This means that I have lost the option to go to first unread post using the link provided. This is very frustrating for me. I have to guess every time where I last was, if I haven't checked in for a day or two this can be very time consuming.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Am I doning something wrong?
Please help.
Safari has historically proven itself to be a piece of crap web browser. Do you still see those errors when using either Firefox or Chrome?

I'll have to try, the thing I do like about safari is my top sites in my history, it is such a cool and easy window.
just tried firefox, but nothing has been updated so I can't tell.
Do you ever have that problem?

There's a feature of Chrome that (on it's home page) is broken down into two sub-pages: Most visited and Apps. That might be a good alternative.

I've got this rash... Right near my... Oh... Wait... FORVM complaints... Not medical complaints... Sorry... My bad... But... On topic, Safari seems to be working well with my i-phone...
On safari on this iPad the FORVM seems to take forever to load.

Going to switch back to safari and see what happens.
Just happened again, don't understand what it could be.

I have Safari, and I've never had a problem with it or this site.

Speaking for the Watchman we try to handle it quickly, so if you see any please "flag" the post(s) and write in spam as the reason.

Meh...

Not so much that they've had the opportunity to post, but rather, they have certain things with how they set up their profiles that gives them away... It's generally more of an admin thing, rather than a Watchman issue... Went for quite awhile without seeing them, but as of late, their back in full force with the Holiday Season... As I said, it was an observation, not a complaint or rant...

This would probably kill the FORVM.
But in all reality, we try and catch those as soon as they pop up. Only so much can be done to prevent the registrations of these accounts, but that's more of a limitation of the forum software. However, once we get the reports, the banhammer is swift.

Lol. There'd definitely be about 24,000 less posts.

Perhaps it's an idea to have a captcha or a questions you have to answer when signing up here? A simple question anyone can know/Google ie. where is Animal/Universal located, what place did Ox reach at the 2012 Olympia, what's the name of our famous multi-vitamin... Just offering suggestions here but I've noticed on other forums stuff like that tends do reduce the amount of spambot signups.

Yep, got another one tonight.
