Not sure if this belongs in here, but I'll give it a shot.

I don't compete in weightlifting, but would like to one day.

I just recently started getting serious about deadlifting. My problem is when I go heavy ( My max is 335 as of last night), my back rounds a little at the bottom of the lift, after that it is straight the rest of the way up.

My question is, how do I work on keeping my back straight at the bottom ( exercises to do, routines, etc. )

any help is definitely appreciated.

thanks

make sure you have strong core. i might be completely wrong about this question but you need to make sure you some really strong abs. start doing sit ups every work out. work your way up to doing decline ebnch sit ups holding weight on your chest. i do 200 a day with a 25 lbs weight on the decline bench so far. still working my way up as well. make sure you do plenty of core exercises. save your back. its important.

You could try doing back extensions on a machine or hyper-extensions holding a plate, to strengthen your lower back. I have seen other people recommend rack pulls for working up to heavier weight. Also really work on your form at a slightly lower weight. Try searching for deadlift on the forvm, there have been quite a few questions about form and such already.

Thanks Q. Yes, please don't be afraid to use the search function. There's lots of valuable information that has been posted already in this topic.

Think leg press, leg press the weight off the floor. Push your chest out in an over exaggerated fashion, keep the back tight and give it your all off the floor. When you set up properly you should feel like a coiled spring ready to explode the weight off th floor.

Make sure you're not looking down - that will encourage your back to round. Look forward, slightly up. I find this helps me keep my back in better form.

Lots of good solid advice, but some really key pointers are, look up and focus on something above you, push your chest out and keep your abs tight and psuhed out, if you do all this your lower back should not round

Thanks for the advise everyone. I will drop the weight a little and work on my form. The last thing I want is an injury due to bad form.

One more question, when doing rack pulls how low is the bar? I have heard of different heights, below the knee, above the knee?

thanks again guys.

I wil definitely try it without shoes.

Also my goal is to dead lift 350 by my birthday, 04/03

I'm also going to have my dad watch me so I can work on my technique. He knows a thing or two about deadlifting. Back in the ealry 70's he deadlifted 580 at a body weight of 180 in competition, which was pretty good back then, shoot, it is still good by today's standards.
